Dreams were fulfilled in the first round of the NFL draft 2016, as there were many headlines that made the event memorable besides the prospects’ wardrobes.
Round One is Complete in the NFL Draft 2016
University of California’s Jared Goff went first overall as expected to the Los Angeles Rams. North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles.
There was no surprise that the first two picks were quarterbacks, but everybody wanted to see what the San Diego Chargers were going to do the third pick. A lot of analysts penciled in University of Mississippi’s offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, since the Chargers were in need of a lineman to keep Phillip Rivers off the ground and Tunsil was predicted as the number one player overall in many mock drafts.
The talented offensive lineman heard his name get called, but it wasn’t where he thought, as he went from potentially being number three to no. 13. Leading up to his name being called, his Twitter account was supposedly hacked as there was a picture of him smoking out of gas mask device, according to Tunsil. In addition, he also said that took money from a Mississippi official to help pay bills.
When asked a number of questions about his actions off the field, Tunsil had this to say.
“Somebody hacked my account,” Tunsil told NFL Network’s Deion Sanders. “It was a mistake. It happened years ago, like I said before. Somebody hacked my Twitter account and that’s how it got on there. It’s a crazy world. Things happen for a reason. I’m glad to be in Miami. I’m going to work my butt off and give it all I got… It’s a blessing just to be a part of the NFL. You go through adversity in life. It’s what you overcome,” he said.
The Ohio State University saw five of their athletes taken within the first 20 picks. The Chargers took Defensive End Joey Bosa no. 3 and the Dallas Cowboys grabbed running back Ezekiel Elliott. At no. 10, the New York Giants drafted cornerback Eli Apple, and the Detroit Lions snatched offensive tackle Taylor Decker at no. 16. Darron Lee was the last Buckeye to be taken with the New York Jets drafting him at no. 20.
Elliott was asked about sharing this moment with his former teammates.
“It’s crazy that we made it because we were always being funny about winning a college title and get drafted in the first round, but we always knew that we could it and to see it come true is amazing,: Elliott said.
To top that, the Super Bowl reigning champions the Denver Broncos, traded up from the 31st spot to the no. 26, where they drafted quarterback Paxton Lynch out of Memphis. It wasn’t a surprise as Peyton Manning had retired and Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans.
“It was obviously the greatest feeling,” Lynch said. “This was a dream come true for me. The Denver Bronco organization is obviously one of the best in the league.”
The first round had five trades in the first round. That’s more than entire draft last year. There are still talent players left on the board as day will be interesting.
