Bethesda VS Bugs: Fallout 4 Release Issues.

11/11/2015

Fallout 4 was released yesterday and, like most Bethesda games, it’s on its way to being the biggest release of the year. Fallout 4 pre-orders topped Steam’s “Top Sellers” hours after being announced and the game has stayed as one of the top sellers since. As of the release day, even the season pass is higher on the list than Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. With numbers like these, Fallout 4 is projected to make greater sales than Bethesda’s last major release, Skyrim, surpassing the fantasy giant’s over-20-million units sold.

Unfortunately, Fallout 4 also shares Bethesda’s other trademark, bugs. The Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls franchises have become infamous for bugs, with issues ranging from misplaced items to game-breaking crashes, and Fallout 4 is no exception. After the release of Skyrim, Todd Howard, director of Fallout 4 and various other Bethesda titles, told Destructoid and Game Informer that Bethesda would be developing new techniques to combat the bugs that have plagued their games.  Fallout 4, however, still hosts the usual suspects, with claims of bugs popping up all over the place directly after release. These include frame rate issues, crashes, progress-halting bugs, and unusually long load times.

The PS4 version, specifically, is seeing the most severe bugs. Some users of the PS4 versions of the game experience severe frame rate problem, with users on Neogaf and Twitter making claims of the frame rate dipping into the single digits on the PS4. One Twitter user, Dennis, posted a glitch in which weapons become invisible, with the players characters reload animations playing out with no weapons in their hands.

https://twitter.com/ItsameDennis/status/663393520460423168

This glitch obviously has very little negative impact on gameplay, but it is definitely immersion breaking.

Fallout 4s bugs, while severe in some places, were not unexpected despite Bethesda’s claims of working to fix them. While great strides have no doubt been made to fix the issues plaguing their games, even the most diligent modern developers can’t hope to remove every last bug and glitch without great effort. Bethesda has a reliable history of patching out many of their major bugs, with unofficial patches clearing out the multitude of smaller glitches.  Even with both official and unofficial sources doing a great deal to combat issues, Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas, Bethesda’s most recent titles in each respective franchise, still feature numerous issues to this day. These issues most likely have to do with the scale of Bethesda titles, combined with testers having to comb every inch of landscape and missions to search for bugs. With the typical Fallout and Elder Scrolls game including hundreds of hours of playtime, this equals thousands to tens of thousands of man hours in testing. With strict seasonal release dates, there are sure to be things that would be missed. Added to this is the dark and confusing world of mods and their conflicts with each other.

Motel Hell Afterthoughts

11/8/2015 – Recently we did a compilation of Jason vs. Michael Meyers fan made films.  Thank you to all who commented and shared the post. We want to hear from you.  Which badass immortal slasher legends do you want to duke it out?  Who would win?

Motel Hell is a cult classic horror film from 1980.

Motel Hell Fan Art 2Ranging from spooky, to absurd, Motel Hell is a campy piece of horror nostalgia.  Where the studio wanted a straight ahead slasher flick, the writers and directors were ‘hell bent‘… ahem… on creating an equal mash of comedy and horror.   There are drugged out swingers who get planted in the ground in one scene which is clearly self aware.  Yet in another scene the monster cannibal, Farmer Vincent and his accomplice slice the vocal chords out four unsuspecting musicians.   When watching Motel Hell for the first time the viewer isn’t quite sure what lays ahead. (Be sure to check out our video where we discuss Motel Hell below)

Motel Hell Afterthoughts  |  By: Slickster Magazine

That being said, there is abundance of 80’s and horror movie clichés littered through out the film.  Premiering at the dawn of the decade, there is even a good amount of 1970’s homage lingering over.   Complete with a lush musical score that wanders all over the spectrum.  At point there is a Dukes of Hazzard style car chase which uses country instruments and then during the scary scenes a full studio orchestra ominously keeps the soundtrack suspenseful.   Looking back at the film that is now over 30 years old it is refreshing to see a production without CGI.  Analog music and sound with practical effects have a honesty that seem to have been lost in today’s era of movie making.

No slasher movie would be complete with the obligatory T n’ A.

While we were reviewing Motel Hell a friend came over to help himself to our pizza. Thanks bro.. You know who you are.  At first he had a difficult time understanding the subtle work of art known as Motel Hell.  However, when the film gets to the scene where Ida attempts to kill Terry (played by Nina Alexrod), he instantly got very interested to know who the actress was.  Motel Hell, true to form, delivers in this area as well.  In the era of pre-internet the film makes an effort to cram as much of the damsel in distress’s boobs into every scene possible.  No matter if it is a random shower, a midnight scramble to escape the local sheriff or Terry throwing herself at Farmer Vincent, there is no shortage of flesh for the eyes.

Special thanks to Katie Osborne for the Motel Hell fan art!

Overwatch Console Development and Pricing

Overwatch Console Development and Pricing

11/7/2015

Leading up to Blizzcon, Blizzard has finally released information on the pricing and has given a more solid release date for Overwatch, their upcoming team-based arena shooter. Some of the community was under the assumption that Blizzard would follow in the footsteps of Team Fortress 2, Valve’s massively successful stylized class-based shooter, and adopt a free-to-play model. Blizzard, however, has opted to use the pricing you would see on newly-released games and a couple extra versions with exclusive content available for an increased price. The pricing is as follows:

Overwatch Origin edition cropped

Standard Edition (PC digital download only.)

$39.99

Origin Edition (PC available in digital and retail copies. PS4 and Xbox One retail only.)

Includes extra hero skins and digital extras for other Blizzard titles.

$59.99

Collector’s Edition (Only retail versions available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.)

Includes your standard collectors edition bonuses: soundtrack, artbook, figures, etc.

$129.99

These prices are typical of what you’d see with a AAA console release, but are unusual to see for an arena-based shooter. A shooter of this nature would usually be free-to-start with each character/skin/weapon costing a set amount. These “micotransactions” would make up the game’s profits. The purchasing price is probably implemented as a way of making Overwatch more “console friendly” so that it is more appealing to the console market, with a larger amount of content for a lump sum, as opposed to a free-to-play model.

The console market is something Blizzard has dabbled in for years, but only within the last few years have they had a major release with Diablo 3. For Diablo, the sales on each individual console were much less than the PC release, but all-together, the sales between the four consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One) did end up being roughly the same as the PC numbers. The lack of sales on the individual consoles could be attributed to the fact that Diablo 3 was released for console a while after the PC release. With Overwatch being developed for the console  from the get-go, Blizzard could potentially expand the market for their games. If Overwatch performs well on the consoles, this could mean seeing future Blizzard games being released on home consoles in the future.

A potential issue with Blizzard moving to console would be patching the game. Blizzard is known for releasing constant balance patches for their many competitive online games, something that has to be done to ensure an online game stays fair and without exploits. Having to keep track of developing patches for three separate systems, each of which will have their own host of problems, will take more resources to keep track of. There are many instances of multi-platform games releasing patches for console versions of game long after an issue was been dealt with on PC. Let’s just hope the cost of this development doesn’t catch up to the consumer.

Overwatch is set to release spring 2016.

Jason vs. Michael Myers Fan Films

During the interview with Jay from Bloodbath and Beyond we went off on a tangent.  If you missed it, you can watch it: Bloodbath and Beyond Interview Part 1.  As a matter of fact we went off on many tangents.  One of which was listing the epic battles that fanboys like to watch.  Freddie vs. Jason,  Alien vs. Predator,  Oprah vs. Donuts…. mmm, donuts.  As of today there is not a major motion studio production of a Jason vs. Michael Meyers movie.

However there are over 20 fan made films on Youtube alone. Each one has it’s own unique spin on the classic monsters.  There is some real creativity and DYI attitude interwoven with film lore and easter eggs.

Here are few of our favorite Jason vs. Michael Myers fan films.

Ice Cream Pooping Unicorn

Ice Cream Pooping Unicorn

There is no question that advertising has gotten better, smarter and more effective.  Marketeers have evolved with the speed of streaming video.  “Marketeers“.. is that a real word?  Some sort of bastard hybrid between Disney teens on Adderall and marketing?  Yep, I’m going with real word.  Just coined it and expect to see it in Urban Dictionary soon.

At Slickster Magazine we are big fans of the Youtube community.  I went to watch something, which I can’t even remember now, and I saw a medieval prince eating the fresh rainbow colored ice-cream that was dispensed from a cross-eyed unicorn.  You can’t make this shit up.  Or can you?

At first I thought I had the wrong video.  Now, normally I would be looking for the ‘SKIP AD’ button as fast my eyes can dart to the lower right hand corner of the screen.   But this was different.  I couldn’t believe what I was watching.  Scanning to the left, I saw the video was over two minutes long, but I was mesmerized.  The prince was describing in medically accurate jargon how the unicorn could use a stool like device to improve, well… it’s stool.

Turns out this genius piece of work is for the Squatty Potty and was created by the viral marketing team The Harmon Brothers.  They have developed other successful online advertising campaigns and aimed to raise the bar for this medical device.  Following their success promoting Poo Pourri, they got the call to make discussions about colons, hemorrhoids, and constipation a funny and light hearted topic.   They did a damn good job too, because I’m sitting here this morning, drinking my mildly burned Chock Full o’ Nuts and contributing to their viral campaign about an Ice Cream Pooping Unicorn.

However, I am reminded of a interview from a documentary chronicling the Vietnam War.  In this particular interview with a now greying Marine Corps sergeant, he emotionally told about giving his best soldiers the most difficult orders.  These orders would often and tragically send his ‘best guys‘ to their deaths, but he had to make sure that the task would be completed.  Will The Harmon Brothers face the same fate?  How long can this team continue to create successful campaigns about toothbrushes, poop and now the Squatty Potty, without stepping onto the proverbial landline?

Who cares?!  This shit (pun intended) is funny and smart as hell.  Slickster approved.  Great work Harmon Bro’s.  We salute you.

Mitch Murder releases a new album.

If you’ve ever come around a hazy Saturday night production meeting at Slickster HQ, there is a good chance you’ve heard Mitch Murder.  There is even a rumor that Slickster executive producer Nate has a little routine known as ‘Mitch Murder Mondays’.   That is when, bleary eyed and double grande coffee in hand, he pulls into the office with ‘Burning Chrome‘ raging on his cars’ speakers.   Of course, there is no actual confirmation of Mitch Murder Mondays…. or Chupacabra… or the freakin’ Abdominal Snowman either.

Selection 3 is a compilation of tracks released by Mitch Murder in 2014.

It has a good mixutre of awesome 80’s inspired electronic madness.  Paying homage to some of Mitch Murder’s favorite video games and television series as well, including Knight Rider, Lost Patrol, and Street Fighter II.

However, my favorite track included on Selection 3 is Ocean Avenue.  The saturated south beach Miami sound blends so well with spot on drum samples and catchy harmonies.  It’s just fucking perfect.  End of story.  Ocean Avenue was a special gift for Mitch Murder fans.  He released it as thank you for all his fans when he reached 10k on his Soundcloud page.  You can download Ocean Avenue for free here: https://soundcloud.com/daataa/mitch-murder-ocean-avenue-free-download.

TurboGrafx 16 Console surprise hit and run
10/20/2015

A few weeks ago I was talking to a new found friend of mine.  We got on the topic of old skool’ video games for sale. I expressed to him my interest in collecting vintage video games.  To which he replied, ‘oh, I think I still have some of that stuff from when I was kid in my basement‘.  I asked him if he wanted to sell the games and consoles. He was hesitant at first, but a few days later he sent some photos of his video games for sale.

11291

If you’re like me, you instantly saw the rare Turbografx 16 game ‘Bonk’s Revenge’ in the upper right hand corner of the photo.  I pressed him for the sales and he reluctantly agreed.   I had never had gotten my hands on a TurboGrafx 16 before, one of the most popular video game consoles ever made.  I was stoked to finally have one of the rare game systems.

We agreed to meet at the local super store.  He was late to arrive, so I went inside for a drink.  As I waited he still didn’t show up. I was getting a little worried he wouldn’t meet and bring the games, at which time  I saw him walk into the store with a concerned look on his face.  Maybe he had figured out what his old game system is worth online.  We had already agreed on a certain price.

When I asked him what was going on he said, “I can’t believe what I just did.”  That’s when he told me he had hit someone’s car in the parking lot.  It had dented the door of the car and scratched his car’s bumper.  I asked what kind of car he had hit.  As I narrowed it down, it sounded more and more like my car!  I said, “Dude! I’m pretty sure you hit my car!” We went out to the parking lot, and sure enough he had crushed the passenger side door panel.  Of all the cars in the parking lot, he pulls in next to mine and dents my door.

Even with the incident my mind jumped to the games.  He got the games for sale out of his trunk.  I asked him how much he wanted for the games.  He said, “You don’t owe my anything, and we’ll handle the rest through my insurance.”  Not what I was expecting but I took it and told him, “Lets meet next week and you can bring your big screen TV!”

Once I got the collection of video games back home I started going through the box and found the rare Bonk’s Revenge was gone, but it didn’t bother me.  I still had a great haul of vintage game systems, including an SNES a hand full of games and a Super Nintendo Game Genie made by Galoob.  I’ll be going through all this stuff and will be selling the doubles.

Metal Gear Solid V, The Phantom Pain – Video Game Review

Metal Gear Solid V, The Phantom Pain – Video Game Review.

11/6/2015

Picture it! You’re in the dry terrains of Afghanistan.  Riding on horseback, the heat is beating you down as you travel the rugged landscape.  All is quiet until you see a guard outpost far off in the horizon.  You pull out the well worn binoculars in your inventory and spy a gang of bored guards just lazy-ing around.   These people are supposed to be guarding important intel, weapons or innocent citizens and victims?   Taking a moment to survey the best route of entry and your options you plot our your plan. You can go in guns blazing, hide n snipe, or just sneak in and get what important and sneak back out. The choice is yours, but either way you’re going in there.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN_20150903175331

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, you can experience this and more! The open world experience is very enjoyable.  Being a new addition to the Metal Gear Solid franchise, the choices to interact with the playing environment are wide open.  From the free roam on either horseback or vehicles, to saving animals, grabbing items and soldiers for building your Mother Base which is a pretty neat bonus to the many missions the game offers, you are only limited by your imagination.

One of the mechanics I loved about this game was the weather and time changes while playing. Hearing the AI announce “Sandstorm Approaching” gets me a tingly inside because I get to get all ninja like. Soon as that sandstorm hits that guard outpost, I run right in k.o.ing every guard I come across. Such a great feeling when that happens.  Another favorite was the anytime supply drop and new weapon drop requests. Even the option of capturing guard outposts after either killing or knocking out all the guards there was a great addition that I personally love a lot.

However, one thing about the game that I found disappointing was the lack of cinematic cut scenes that I enjoyed in the previous MGS games. I felt that this MGS was a bit of a “filler” to the series, it just gives that type of vibe. Don’t get me wrong this game is amazing and one of the best in the franchise.  The graphics are beautiful.  Audio is sonically lush and the game mechanics are easy to use and respond awesome. Even some of the story’s scenarios were pretty exhilarating.

Yet, I felt lack of the story left a bad aftertaste for the game to me.  I did enjoy playing this game very much, however it just disappointing to learn of the fallout between the father of the MGS series game creator Hideo Kojima & Konami.  Ibtime.com states that there was a recent report on Konami even shutting down their LA Studio where they developed the Metal Gear games. [Update 11/6/2015, 0647 – Konami closes down the LA studio.] Polygon also stated that this is not true and that Kojima is taking a “long break” & Konami explained that game developers usually take long vacation breaks after finishing creating a game. All we can do is just hope that this is true and Kojima will be back at creating amazing story plots to the MGS & Silent Hill series. Until then Metal Gear Solid V : The Phantom Pain is a amazing & fun play, and if you like community play they recently released Metal Gear Online to keep you busy until the next one.

Slickster Magazine wants to know what you think?  Did MGSV The Phantom pain kick ass!?  Leave a comment below.
