Horror Comedy Review Zombeavers

Written by Josh Brewer, May 12, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. Tweet to: @theJWBrewer

Title: Zombeavers – Yes, that’s really the title.

Director: Jordan Rubin
Writer: Jordan Rubin, Al Kaplan, John Kaplan
Release Date: March 20th, 2015
Cast: Rachel Melvin, Cortney Palm, Lexi Atkins, Hutch Dano, Jake Weary, Peter Gilroy,

Cliff’s Notes

After a chemical spill, a group of college students – adults in their 20’s – run a fowl of a group of mutant zombie beavers with one thing on their rodent-y little minds: turning college jerks into a delicious feast.

Lecture

Seeing as I’ve already covered Freddy Vs. Jason – check out the review here– I had a week off from the ANOES series to fill with something. This puppy shows up on the Netflix and I’ve checking it out. Intriguingly titled, Zombeavers provides just about exactly what you’d except.

This is a flick were expectations work against you. I walked in expecting nothing – let’s be honest, less than nothing- and got more than that. Sure, this puppy isn’t Shakespeare, but the pieces work pretty well and the flick offers enough liveliness to keep things going until the titular creatures make an appearance.

And when they do, Zombeavers embraces its inherit wackiness and get to work. The second act lives and dies with its gore and beaver puppets(!), which offer plenty of fun times. The kills work well and the flick always manages to stay at least partially interesting. There are a few fun twists and several solid jokes; at its best, Zombeavers works as a less intelligent Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil.

Unlike Tucker and Dale, Zombeavers doesn’t manage its characters particularly well. Most of the “college” students here ring as self-absorbed and unlikable. The three girls do alright, but once the guys show up, things go from “meh” to “nope” fast. I really want to know how these girls put up with these dickheads. And while the budget usually works as an advantage, a few of the early moments could have used some work, especially the GCI. Lastly, the final frames of the flick could use some work. Throwing back to a joke that didn’t really work too well in the first place screamed of writer desperation.

Acting

Atkins plays her final girl alright. The character could have used a bit more specificity in the writing, more on that later, but Atkins gives enough to help her out. Palm and Melvin handle their roles well, with Palm getting the most development around. She takes the opportunity, which really helps. Dano and Gilroy both get to play obnoxiously dense characters. They embody it well, but they’re gonna grate on your nerves. Weary plays the only guy with any redeeming qualities. More of him would have been nice. The older actors in the house do a-ok, though the flick doesn’t want to spend too much time giving them much to do.

Directing

Rubin gets solid nods to Jaws, The Thing, and Night of the Living Dead into the flick, which raises it above the rest of the middle ground muck. He also manages to get quite a few laughs into the flick, something that makes the early goings much stronger. Alas, the flick lacks any kind of tension and the only big twist seems a touch flat. The shot selection in the non-horror scenes could use a touch up and the flick as a whole seems to start and stop at the beginning.

Script

As a b-movie about zombie beavers, this puppy is more or less successful. A few jokes work and the dialogue snips along well. Each act offers something interesting and new, though I wonder if there weren’t more opportunities once the last twist hits. At 85 minutes, more time could have been added and given to the final set ups, which Zombeavers could have really used. Alas, the characters here are so thin that you can see through them, in some cases the flick can’t really overcome the issue, which drags it down. A few of the character moves reek of a desperate writer and defy all kinds of logic.

Effects

The Zombeavers look like pure B-movie fun and a number of the practical effects rock. We get tons of red stuff and a few dismemberment that the film uses well. Alas, the CGI ain’t always up to par, especially early in the flick.

Highlights

Zombeaver transformation!

Lowlights

Um, any character with a Y chromosome.

Final Thoughts

Funny and occasionally fun, Zombeavers works best with either zero expectations or a few beers. Pick one and enjoy.

UFC 211

Stipe Miocic vs Junior dos Santos

Although the rematch has come at an unexpected time seeing as Dos Santos is ranked at #4 and 1-1 since beating Stipe it’s had a positive response from the fans. The first fight was a classic, I for one was hoping these two would meet again at some point in the future.

Three is the highest number of heavyweight title defenses in UFC history (non-consecutive), Randy Couture had three defenses over the span of two separate title reigns. The heavyweight division has seen more title changes than other weight division since the UFC’s formation.

Miocic has expressed his desire to be the first dominant champion, with a title defense on his record already a win against JDS ties him level with Cain Velasquez & Randy Couture for most consecutive title defenses. Only one fight away from setting a new record.

It seems like a distant memory thinking about when Junior Dos Santos knocked out the man many people expected to be the long-reigning champion, Cain Velasquez. A year later Velasquez avenged the loss and put a stamp on the rivalry by winning the third rubber match. Following the loss in the third fight, he was matched up against Stipe Miocic who gave him more trouble than the oddsmakers thought he would (+300 underdog). With a loss against Overeem, a win against Ben Rothwell & various issues with fighters ranked higher Dos Santos finds himself back in title contention.

The heavyweight division hasn’t changed much in terms of new blood in recent years, excluding Francis Ngannou the familiar names have just swapped places in the rankings. Werdum, Velasquez, & Overeem all sit above JDS and any one of these could be the next challenger to the throne. Four and a half years after losing the belt will JDS continue the tradition of the title frequently changing hands or, is Stipe Miocic the exception to the rule.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Jessica Andrade

On the subject of Dominant champions, Joanna is currently two fights away from equalling Ronda Rousey’s record of 6 title defenses. The odds for this fight opened as the tightest for a joanna Jedrzejczyk contest since she’s been a champion. Joanna opened at -165 or 8/13 the challenger Jessica Andrade’s odds were +125 or 11/8.

The most potent threat Andrade possess is the ability to finish fights, out of her 16 wins only 4 have come by decision, the 12 finishes are made up of 7 submissions & 5 knockouts. Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz enjoyed periods of success against Joanna however they lacked the punching/kicking power to seriously threaten a striker of Joanna’s technical proficiency. Andrade showed against Angela Hill she has serious power for a female strawweight, arguably the hardest hitter in the strawweight division.

This fight should be a good test of Joanna’s character as I think she’ll have to overcome some adversity to get the win on Saturday night. As skillful as Joanna is she’s not renowned for finishing opponents. Five rounds is a long time to avoid Andrade’s swarming attacks, it will be interesting to see how the champion nullifies Andrade’s weapons.

UFC 211Potential Fight of the Night

Eddie Alvarez vs Dustin Poirier

Yes, I know this fight is headlining the prelims and as such not a part of the main card but seeing as Cejudo vs Pettis has been canceled Alvarez vs Poirier should be kicking off the main card in my opinion.

Two fighters who have knockout power with questionable punch resistance. This is one of the more obvious contenders to pick for an exciting fight, at least on paper. You could see both fighters possibly hitting the mat at some point and recovering as we’ve seen both guys do before. Be prepared for a fast-paced back and forth battle.

Main Card Picks

Stipe Miocic vs Junior dos Santos (Miocic)

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Jessica Andrade (Jedrzejczyk)

Demian Maia vs Jorge Masvidal (Maia)

Frankie Edgar vs Yair Rodriguez (Rodriguez)

Krzysztof Jotko vs David Branch (Jotko)

Stipe Miocic vs Junior dos Santos Video Analysis and Prediction

Keys to success for Miocic

Current win streak

Since losing to Dos Santos Miocic has been victorious in four fights on the trot finishing every opponent, three of those four wins have been in the opening round.

The only real bit of trouble he’s seen along the way is the knockdown against Overeem.

knockdown vs overeem.gif

The fashion in which Stipe responded was impressive, he immediately looked to respond quickly wrestling the momentum away from Alistair Overeem.

Overeem attempted an oblique kick which Stipe used to get the fight to the floor eventually finishing the contest via ground strikes.

Positive moments from Dos Santos vs Miocic 1

Although he came up short Miocic gave JDS lots of trouble, there were several moments where Miocic shifted the momentum of the round by landing hard shots. Miocic also managed to land a takedown amongst what was mostly a boxing match in an octagon.

Stipe has made huge improvements since losing to JDS 3 years ago but there’s definitely areas that Stipe 1.0 uncovered which Stipe 2.0 can further exploit. In particular catching Dos Santos when attempting to exit and when JDS is squared up moving back.

Keys to success for Dos Santos

In rematches, there’s always a slight psychological edge to the winner of the previous contest. Having already implemented an effective gameplan the victor has the benefit of forcing the opponent to adjust & bring something different to the octagon.

Every round was pretty competitive in the first contest, what JDS did to swing them in his favour was stay active over the entire round. Stipe landed power shots in bursts, Dos Santos was continually working using his experience of five round fights to accumulate scoring shots rather than banking on a finish. This brings me on to the next variable.

Stipe landed power shots in bursts, Dos Santos on the other hand continually kept working using his experience of five round fights to accumulate scoring shots rather than bank on a finish. This brings me on to the next variable.

Dos Santos is effective over 5 rounds

Screenshot (3).png

Dos Santos has been in 6 fights scheduled for 5 rounds, from those 6 fights he has a record of 4-2. The losses both coming against Cain Velasquez, the only reason those two fights even made it to the 5th round is due to Dos Santos’s fantastic conditioning and will power. Excluding Cain Velasquez, Dos Santos is the best 5 round fighter in the division for me.

The statistics from JDS vs Miocic 1 on Fightmetric outlines the control JDS displayed over 25 minutes against Stipe.

JDS Fightmetric (3)

JDS Fightmetric.png

JDS attempted 110 more significant strikes over the course of the fight landing 34 more than Stipe Miocic, takedowns tied at one a piece. The outstanding stat is how well JDS mixed up his attack going high and low. Miocic mainly hunted the head causing his offense to become predictable, Junior kept Stipe guessing by jabbing and shooting lead rights to the body effectively. These stats show just how adept JDS is at controlling a championship fight.

Prediction

Unlike the first fight, this won’t be Stipe’s first try at 5 rounds. He has the past fight with JDS under his belt as well as the following fight with Mark Hunt which was stopped in the final round. Even though I give the slight edge to Dos Santos if the fight goes into the championship rounds I expect Stipe to be far more aware in order to mitigate the rounds slipping away.

This version of Stipe Miocic is not the same one Dos Santos beat in 2014. Dos Santos for me isn’t getting any better if anything the knockout against Overeem may have taken something out of him. Stipe has recently excelled at setting traps for opponents and then making the most of the positional advantage. I sense the fight will follow a similar pattern as last time, however, I don’t see what Dos Santos can do better looking at his skill set. Stipe can expand further on the things he did well in the first meeting cause more damage and take Junior Dos Santos out.

Stipe Miocic wins by TKO.

Interview: Paul McCoy – 12 Stones

0

5/10/2017 – Hello, my name is Mike Lopez and below is an interview I conducted with the lead singer of 12Stones – Paul McCoy .

Mike Lopez – First of I would like to start of this interview with a simple question….. Do you have any misconceptions of your band that you would like to address before we begin?

Paul McCoy – We don’t have any real misconceptions about the band that should be addressed. We are all normal guys that share a love for all things music.

I heard that you worked with Evanescence on their song “Bring Me To Life”, how was it like working with them on the song?  How is it like working on a compilation piece?

It was an amazing experience working with Evanescence on BMTL. It was something that I will always be proud of and something that I will never forget. I LOVE working with other artists on their music. It’s always nice to get a different approach when writing music.

How does being a Christian band differentiate you from the crowd?

We are NOT a Christian band. We are a band that believes in sharing our own stories and experiences in life. I grew up in a southern Baptist home with my amazing family. I always write about my own questions, fears etc and try to put a positive spin on things. Music is subjective. The meaning to a song can be totally different from one listener to another. One person might hear a song and think of a relationship while someone else might not get that at all. I don’t like taking the meaning away from a listener.

I really like how positive your music is.  What would you say is your main inspiration for writing music?

Our main inspiration when writing our songs is life. We are all here on Earth together and tend to share similar experiences. I believe that life is what you make it. Bad things happen to good people. Our songs are about dealing with these things when they happen. If we can change one person’s outlook on a bad situation, then we have accomplished something that we are proud of.

What inspires you, when writing an album ? Is it something positive, or does something negative inspire you? And Is it difficult to keep a positive attitude when it is something bad?
Again, life is the ultimate inspiration. I have been inspired by positive things such as the birth of my daughter. I have also been inspired by things that are horrible such as the suicide of friends. You can’t force lyrics in songs. They have to come organically for us. If they are forced, they sound insincere.”

Is it hard to stay humble, in a genre of music that thrives on, hate, and negativity?

When we first got our start, we got to meet several musicians that we looked up to. Some were humble and gracious and some were the opposite. It made us realize that we are very fortunate to be in the position that we are in and to approach every show, every fan, every critic with a good outlook. That’s one of the things that has helped us stay together for 17 years.

What type of venues do you like to perform in?

We like to perform in just about any venue, There’s a certain sound that comes from packed out bigger venues. It’s addictive. There’s is an energy that comes from more intimate venues that fuels us. As long as there is someone willing to listen, we will play!! 10 or 10,000. That’s the rule.

What was most memorable about your first show?

The most memorable thing about our first show for me was that we didn’t intend on getting signed or being around for 17+ years. We just were a few guys that wrote songs and got to play for friends and family.

Do you plan on doing small shows on your tour? Or are you going to play in festivals?

We will be playing shows anywhere we can. It doesn’t matter if they are small shows or big festivals. We just LOVE to play.

I also heard your about to release a new album in July….what is is name of the album? Also what was your favorite part about making it?

Our 6th studio record will come out on JULY 14th. It is called Picture Perfect. My favorite part about making this record is that we got to get back to our roots and recorded a record full of songs that WE chose. We recorded in a studio in our hometown with 2 amazing producers (Dave Fortman, David Troia). It’s as real as it gets for a modern band.

Do you enjoy going on tour just with your current material? Or do you like touring on just the new album?

When we tour, we mix in songs from all albums. At this point, we have enough songs to play 5 full shows so we like to mix it up.

What’s next for 12 STONES!

The next thing for 12 Stones is to release Picture Perfect and to play some shows.

Thank you for you time Paul!   if you want to learn more about Paul McCoy and 12stones, please visit them at the following links below:

Sitting Down with H1Z1 Fight for the Crown Winners: Obey Alliance

May 9th, 2017, 12:00 p.m. – It’s good to be the King. And the team Obey Alliance knows exactly how sweet it is after their dominant victory at the H1Z1: Fight for the Crown on the CW. 15 teams of 5 battled it out on stage to determine who was the best team. In a match filled with chaos, surprise attacks, and plenty of fights Obey Alliance proved cooler heads prevail. They played a meticulous, and strategic match that lead them to victory with all 5 team members alive at the end. Slickster Magazine had the opportunity to talk with Kevin “Kevie1” Bed, Miguel “Mig” Medina, and Grant “Grant” Labelle from the team.

Interview

What was the experience like doing the tournament?

Kevin – I’ve never been to any event for any game in general. This is my first event or convention. Going here I didn’t know what to expect, and they didn’t show us the stage or anything. Literally nothing. We showed up there that Sunday and saw it for the first time. It was mind blowing, a crazy set up with lights and cameras. It was a pretty long day, with a few practice games. But once the match actually came, we were really focused on the game. It fell into our hands almost.

Watching the replay, it showed you guys a little disorganized at the beginning, and like the underdogs. Did you guys feel that way?

Miguel – Not really, we’d been practicing for a months and been doing pretty good on [scrimmages]. We kinda knew what we were doing. We also didn’t have a lot of loot in the beginning so we were kind of scattered. In the show, our in game leader was saying “calm down, calm down” because we had no loot at that moment. Some of us wanted to loot and some of us wanted to stay. So we were kind of disorganized but we still did it.

What was your mentality going into the competition?

Kevin – We didn’t want to switch it up from how we practiced. You play how you practice, and we practiced pretty seriously. One of our main strats was to just be inside the gas circle. Our goal was to stay in the circle and fight our ground. That’s exactly what we did. We got lucky with a few circles on us and we held a lot of ground. Every other team was pretty much on the other half of the circle. We just held our ground and did our best.

Was there anything that you would change if you were to play again? Or did you play the perfect game?

Grant – We pretty much played the perfect game. There was definitely a disadvantage for us spawning in. We spawned in pinched between two teams. They spawned in to the north of us and to the east of us. So we knew we had to come in and get out quickly. [Pleasant Valley] is just a death zone. We were just gonna lose numbers, and the whole goal was winning five-up. When you have numbers you can pinch, you can wrap on people and you can do all that.

We just had to get out of [Pleasant Valley] and play on the outskirts. Get away from Cranberry (one of the locations in the game like Pleasant Valley). If there is a safe zone and Cranberry is in it, people will push out of it. Lots of teams will push out of it and around it. They’ll be watching people walk out of it too. We knew we just needed to be away from it.

With this win, what does this mean for yourselves and Obey Alliance?

Kevin – I look at this on a bigger scheme. This is a start for H1z1, we were a part of that. We’re all growing personally on Twitch and Twitter, but I still want more tournaments and bigger tournaments. I’m excited for that. I still want more to happen in the future. I think Obey is getting more sponsors because of how this was a big event. We’re just taking it all in and seeing what comes next.

Is there anything fans should be on the lookout for?

Miguel – There’s an online tournament.

Grant – Kevie, myself, and Shurima will be taking place in the Showdown event. It’s taking place May 25th on Twitch.

What do you believe is going to be a major hurdle for esports, H1Z1, and the team moving forward?

Grant – Daybreak needs to focus on fixing the little bugs. During the tournament I was using explosive arrows there at the very end and Adrain and JP left from LG, and I landed several shots close to them and none of them registered. So that basically just rendered my play that I had done ineffective. If they can just fix little things like that to really be able to progress it for H1Z1. Because if things are happening like that, what are you gonna do? It’s a basic utility that isn’t going to work right.

Miguel – Yeah you can’t have professional gaming and minor thing that don’t work. They’ve definitely hired a lot of people at Daybreak I know, they actually have a whole team dedicated to bug fixes right now. They’re definitely getting rolled out soon.

What do you guys hope happens next?

Kevin – I hope there’s more than just one off events. I hope there’s a league or something that keeps people playing. Because right now, we don’t have incentive to continue playing as a team. The next event is a solo event. And then we don’t know, there’s nothing announced. It’s just a dark hole right now. We need a league to come up for solos and fives, so that people keep playing and grinding towards something. Right now is just that dead zone. We don’t really have anything to play or compete with aside from solo leaderboards.

Do you feel like there is a stigma against esports?

Grant – Oh definitely my man. I was watching something on Twitter the other day. An older gentleman, he’s got his own talk show, I’m not sure. But all I do know is that somebody was fighting against him, and he said esports is not actually a thing. It’s just people, there’s no actual skill involved. Even if it’s just that, it was just this morning and you can see it. It’s in the media.

Miguel – I think a lot of parents don’t agree with it, when their kids are playing for multiple hours. This tournament really opened my parents eyes. They’ve always been supportive with streaming, but this tournament opened their eyes. Parents mostly, they don’t want their kids to be playing all the time.

Kevin – I’m pretty much in the same boat. My parents didn’t know a lot but they looked into it a lot. Once you go tell people they look it up on their own. My grandparents were like “what is this?” and they ended up looking it up for hours. Every single thing about it and understanding it now. But there definitely are the hard headed people who don’t agree with gaming at all. They just think “oh they’re just moving a controller, keys, or this or that.” And my response is ok, you try to do that.

Do you think that the way traditional media covers it is the right way? Or do you believe that the focus needs to be on the independent media members that are covering it? Or do you believe that major media trying to be the earlier adopter is better for the growth of esports?

Miguel – I feel like the people putting out the media should have a passion for it. I feel like a lot of media outlets filter a lot of stuff out. I think there should be multiple outlets for esports. Not just looking at it for profit.

Kevin – I think the most media we could get is the best. Anyone who covers it a bit is just helping get the word out.

Anything else for the people?

Kevin – I just want to thank Obey for the opportunity and making this all happen.

Grant – Me too, and to go back on the question about stigma. My parents didn’t believe this was a real thing until they saw me on television, so it was crazy.

Once again, we at Slickster Magazine want to thank and congratulate Obey Alliance for their big victory at Fight for the Crown. This is a talented group of young guys and you should definitely check them out when you get the chance. And remember: you will Obey.

You can check out the Obey Alliance website here for all things Obey.

The Lost City of Z

The Lost City of Z
In The Lost City of Z, Major Fawcett contacts the Amazonian people for the first time.

The Lost City of Z

At the dawn of the 20th century, British explorer Percy Fawcett journeys into the Amazon, where he discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment, which views indigenous populations as savages, the determined Fawcett, supported by his devoted wife, son, and aide-de-camp, returns to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case.

The Good: Filmakers stretching a meager budget to the gritty limits. The art of story telling isn’t dead and doesn’t require CGI.

The Bad: There is slow.  Then there is checking your watch every few minutes to see how long you’ve been in the theater slow.

The Ugly: Mixed marketing left the film, and the audience, in a search for it’s identity.  Younger fans of Marvel action movies wanted a hard core action flick, while seated next to me was a couple in their 80’s on a date. Yes, they felt compelled to talk through the entire movie. Yes ma’am, I see the snake in the jungle too. Thank you, please STFU.

Side Quest: While there seemed to be three distinct acts in the movie, the third act never really delivers the pay off.

Writer and director, James Gray, recently said, “As THE LOST CITY OF Z made its long and arduous journey to the screen, the film became something of an obsession for me – fitting, I suppose, given its subject. Percy Fawcett’s preoccupation with the Amazon and its peoples was motivated by many factors, and his story is marked by incredible twists and turns. But when I read David Grann’s book, one idea struck me as particularly worthy of exploration: here was a person for whom the search meant everything. His dream of finding an ancient Amazonian civilization sustained him through unimaginable hardships, the skepticism of the scientific community, startling betrayals and years spent away from his family.”

The Lost City of Z timeline

1908: Fawcett returns to England proclaiming his belief in a lost South American civilization.

May 1912: Fawcett leads his second expedition through the Amazon rainforest with Henry Costin and James Murray in search of the “Lost City of Z.”

June 28, 1914: Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated, igniting World War I and compelling Fawcett’s return to England.

1923: A newspaper reporter interviews Fawcett at his country home in Stoke Canon about future plans and competing expeditions.

Dinosaurs. Hookers. Ninjas. | You had us at dinosaurs

The VelociPastor (2017) – Trailer

Sooooo…. This showed up in the ol’ Gmail inbox this afternoon….

Adapted from a 2011 viral short of the same name, the film is a feature-length horror comedy and ode to bad b-movies of the 70s, featuring appearances from goth music icon Aurelio Voltaire and world-renowned contemporary artist Jiechang Yang. Because why not. It has a silly dinosaur costume in it, everything’s on the table. The film is about a priest (Gregory James Cohan) who travels to China and is scratched by an ancient artifact, which allows him to turn into a dinosaur. After initially being reticent to use his power, he’s convinced by his hooker friend (Alyssa Kempinski) to use this power for good, and fight the ninja menace that’s begun plaguing the city.

Well, I instantly knew I had a choice.  Leave to go watch Guardians of The Galaxy, VOL. 2, or click the link and watch the trailer.   I chose the trailer.  Believe me, this choice was easier than I expected.  When I go into a trailer like The VelociPastor, I have one question that must be answered immediately;  Is the film self aware and poking fun of itself?  The answer with The VelociPastor is 100% yes.

Slickster Magazine – What attracted you to 70’s B movies? Was there a particular director or studio that you have an affinity for?
Brenden Steere –  Oh man, what isn’t there?  I think at the end of the day my love for them can really be traced down to this: These are not films that whisper – they yell. Coffy is not here to be an intellectual film – it’s here to give you Pam Grier‘s body and capital-A Action. I think I appreciate that honesty, there’s a lack of pretension that I really respect, and I think with this lack of pretension comes the idea that you can do anything. Movies are dream machines, and if you can think it, go do it. No one’s stopping you but you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_(1977_film)In terms of a particular director/studio, I would have to say the Europeans are the kings of this kind of movie in the 70s. The giallo are happening here, so you’re talking Argento, Fulci, Leone, Lamberto Bava, but you also have the oddities like Jean Rollin, who I really like. Also in Asia with the Shaws and the Japanese pinku/gangster/weird horror films. Obayashi’s Hausu is one of my favorite movies, and I feel like a lot of people laugh at it, but I unironically think it’s chock-fucking-full of terrific filmmaking.

It’s funny though, with this film, I don’t think I was trying specifically to mimic any of these filmmakers, but more recreate the experience of watching these films as a teenager for the first time.

Is going to film school a waste of time and money, or crucial to young filmmakers careers?
I’m an advocate for film school for two reasons. The first is that it allows you a relatively safe environment to experiment and fuck up. You learn more about who you are as a filmmaker in the first two years of film school probably than in any other part of your life, and that’s because you fail a lot. The best way to learn is to just make a lot of garbage and get it out of your system and that’s a hell of a lot easier when your financial well-being is not contingent on a film’s success. You don’t take risks when that’s happening. You’re boring and you don’t try to innovate or excite.
VelociPastor film crew
You make a lot friends at film school. The VelociPastor crew hard at work. #VelociPastor

Secondly, and this seems self-evident but it’s worth mentioning, you also are essentially paying to get to know a lot of like-minded people. Your peers will become your crew, support system, therapists, and collaborators. They are as invaluable as any piece of equipment. I still work with people I met first year of film school. I get jobs from them to this day. So in short: yes I do think it’s worth the money, and I think it’s usually a good idea, but if you can somehow come by these things in other ways? Well, it’s been proven time and again that great filmmakers don’t need film degrees, so take that as you will.

Exactly how much nudity is required to make a successful B movie, horror comedy?  Is female cup size important in casting for these types of roles?  In layman’s terms, does big boobs really matter?
I don’t think nudity is required. It helps sell the film, for sure, but something ‘being sexy’ is way more important than actually seeing boobs, and nudity is not required for sexiness. I also don’t think cup size really matters whatsoever. Some people are more naturally attractive, of course, but almost always, it’s the charisma of the actor or actress that attracts the audience to them. Also, assuming that every audience is attracted to the same person/body type is a mistake. Some people are Emma Stone people, some people are Sofia Vergara people.
Emma Stone vs Sofia Vergara
“Some people are Emma Stone people, some people are Sofia Vergara people”, Brenden Steere
How can fans best support the film?
The absolute best way would be to spread the trailer around! Liking the film’s page on Facebook and following the Twitter will also keep people up to date on when the film will be playing near them. We love hearing from people, and the more vocal the fanbase is, the wider the possible release will be. So honestly the best thing to do would be “not being quiet”. That would be amazing.

New NightmareTitle: Wes Craven’s New Nightmare

Director: Wes Craven
Writer: Wes Craven
Release Date: October 14th, 1994
Cast: Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Mike Hughes, John Saxon, Tracy Middendorf, Miko Hughes, David Newsom, Robert Englund, Wes Craven

Cliff’s Notes

As the Nightmare team begins to prep another film in the series, the cast and creative team of the films find themselves drawn into a real life nightmare.

Lecture

Thank god! After a slow decline over the last several films, Part 6 being the most offensive, New Line gets its ass in gear and the series moves into a better place! The return of Craven to the series suggests a kind of score settling. Once he was properly compensated and credited for his amazing work with the original series, New Line managed to get him to put out one more film. New Nightmare is more aggressive in both scope and structure, allowing it to comment on the art of story telling in a way that so few films do.

New Nightmare is, before anything else, a horror film. All of the tropes make an appearance, from a series of terrifying phone calls to a newly revived Fred Kreuger slicing and dicing his way New Nightmarethrough the cast. But here, more than in the previous installments, he serves as a metaphor. Previous incarnations have used him either as a symbol of the failures of a parent’s morality or a viscous, embodied disease (Part 2 even equated Kreuger with repressed homosexuality), but here he serves as the evil in the world that is embodied within stories. It’s a fascinating idea, fully developed and spun around a fun, fourth-wall-breaking horror flicks.

That’s not to say that everything is perfect. The series has a nasty tendency to overuse the “Not Evil Doctor Who Does Evil Things Cause… Doctor” cliche and New Nightmare ain’t an exception. I could also have used more of Englund and Craven being themselves- fantastic all around – but that might be asking a bit too much. My only real complain falls to the finale, which seems more interested in revisiting the fairy tale Elm Street world that the real world that Craven has created. I’m not saying it doesn’t work, it just seems outside of the rest of the flick…

Acting

Langenkamp give a fantastic performance, easily the highlight of her career. She goes through the wringer and I was with her the whole way. Englund, Saxon, Craven, and the rest of the real world folks have fun playing themselves while Saxon’s return to his Elm Street character rocks. Middendorf plays her good girl character with aplomb while Hughes doesn’t bug me nearly as much as other child actors. The cast here is spot on.

New NightmareDirecting

Craven tones down his usual stylishness and plays things in a much more realistic fashion. This makes the real world scenes hit much harder. Once he switches to full dream powerhouse, Craven still rocks. He build tension like a boss and delivers a slew of cool kills. While the finale falls a little outside of the tone of the rest of the piece, New Nightmare manages to right the ship and Craven is the reason why.

Script

Craven’s skills as a story teller are like a fine wine, they just keep getting better with age. Here, he manages to create something inherently familiar and within the ANOES universe but also unique entry at the same time. His characters are well crafted and the dialogue superb. Last but not least, he returns Freddy to the vicious monster that Craven crafted a decade before. Grade A!

EffectsNew Nightmare

As always, the Nightmare series rocks the SFX and New Nightmare doesn’t change a thing. The red stuff flows with a few of the hardcore kills, while the practical effects look fantastic.

Highlights

The first kill is like hardcore!

This is just too perfect not to post

Lowlights

Just a little thing, I could have used a few more kills. The ones we get rock, but it gets a little dry in the middle block.

Final Thoughts

A commentary on the effects of story telling? A solid horror slasher with a vicious streak? A dry run for the Scream series? All checks! That makes Wes Craven’s New Nightmare both a highlight of the ANOES series and a quality flick, all at the same time!

Grade: B+

Canelo Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Prediction

Chavez Jr’s keys to success

Work Rate/Endurance

Chavez is a pressure fighter, always looking to come forward, find a way in close and force opponents back. This type of style is a nightmare to deal with over 12 rounds. Chavez has been criticized in the past for showing a lack of discipline outside the ring which sometimes leads to him fighting out of shape but when he comes in well prepared his level of conditioning is freakish. Most opponents that have fought fight fire with fire against an in shape Chavez have suffered trying in vain to keep up with his energy sapping style of close quarters exchanges.

Work rate 2.gif

Work rate 3.gif

Work rate 4.gif

The most obvious example of Chavez’s lasting endurance is the fight with Sergio Martinez. After 11 rounds, amongst the 3 judges, only 1 round had been scored for Chavez from a potential 33.

chavez-jr-martinez-scorecard

In the 12th round, he nearly emulated his father who famously finished Meldrick Taylor in the final round whilst down on the cards. Chavez had minimal success for 11 rounds but rallied to deliver a storm of punches which culminated into of the most dramatic rounds of boxing since the turn of the century.

Chavez is the biggest guy Canelo has fought, the more he makes the size a factor in this fight the better his chances are for victory. Canelo tends to take rounds off here and there if Chavez can make him work for as many minutes of every round as possible he can take Canelo into deep waters.

Durability

Another gift Chavez has is the ability to absorb damage, the only time he’s been badly hurt was gainst Andrzej Fonfara which was at the light heavyweight limit. The step up seemed too much for Chavez, he also uncharacteristically fatigued quickly either due to the larger opponent or lack of preparation.

Taking the Fonfara fight out of the equation, middleweights with a history of being able to hurt opponents at will have struggled to put a dent in Chavez Jr. Sergio Martinez didn’t bother Chavez with anything despite being able to catch Chavez at will. The Andy Lee fight was the one that caught my attention. Lee is a big puncher he’s dropped many guys, stopped many guys, but more importantly, he’s knocked guys clean out. Lee landed flush but Chavez seemed unfazed even taunting him whilst stood in punching range.

chavez durability 2.gif

chavez durability 3.gif

chavez durability 3 clowning.gif

Canelo’s punch placement is fantastic, I see him catching Chavez clean and often if Chavez presses hard. The durability will be tested and Chavez will need to ride the wave in order to turn the fight into one that favours his style. In a straight up technical boxing match, Canelo wins 9 times out of 10. In a slugfest, he’ll get far more opportunities to score.

Canelo’s keys to success

Innovative combination punching

Canelo Alvarez is without a doubt one of the greatest non-linear combination punchers I have ever seen, he delivers difficult combinations at speed going high and low in a fluid flowing motion.

Canelo Combinations 4

Canelo Combinations.gif

Canelo Combinations 2.gif

Canelo Combinations 3.gif

Canelo Combations 5

Landing these kinds of accurate combinations on an advancing opponent will over time have a physical & psychological effect. Chavez will become reluctant to take chances if he’s getting tagged regularly trying to get inside. Having touched on Canelo’s habit of taking a round off to rest it’s paramount he picks and chooses his time to attack wisely. If he throws too many shots early and Chavez is still there he could run out of gas, if he doesn’t land enough Chavez may be encouraged to press freely and gain momentum.

Explosive Power

The biggest change I’ve noticed in Canelo as he’s gone up in weight is how he’s gone from being a guy that can hurt high-level fighters to knocking top tier boxers down & out cold with one shot.

Explosive power.gif

Explosive power 2.gif

Explosive power 3.gif

Explosive power 4.gif

This is a factor that could end up making this fight one sided. If Canelo hurt’s Chavez early (it’s a big if but possible) his whole gameplan will be compromised. Having mentioned Chavez’s durability it will be intriguing to see if Canelo possesses the power to trouble him. The GGG fight seems to be on the horizon, it would be a huge statement for Canelo to finish this fight within the distance.

Prediction

It’s smart for Canelo to fight a bigger stronger opponent before he steps in the ring with Golovkin, it gives Canelo a different set of problems to deal with. The issue for Chavez is he’s spent too much of his prime coasting through his career. His motivation and dedication have always been an issue, the last guy Chavez fought who’s on Canelo’s level was Martinez, it’s been almost 5 years since that fight. Canelo is not only a high-level operator he’s also dangerous, I’m anticipating the gap in levels to be apparent from early on in the fight. I can see a scenario where Canelo get’s his man out of there but I’ll go with the safe bet and pick,

Canelo to win on points.

Mos Eisley now open

The Scum and Villainy Cantina Serves A Purpose

Star Wars quotes are ingrained in pop culture now.  ‘I am your father’ misquote controversy aside, there is a quote from Obi Wan Kenobi in Episode IV that has stuck.  “Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” To place this in context, the sage Jedi Master utters this to a naive Luke Skywalker as they prepare to find a space pilot. A dashing bandit who is willing to risk life and limb to smuggle their posse off the planet of Tatooine.  Cue Han Solo, Chewbacca, some green asshole named Greedo, one light saber dismembered arm, and you have a classic film scene.  Fanboys and Fangirls can now party hard on the Hollywood Blvd, just like the mercenaries and space jockeys were doing in the film.

This seems like fun. It is an experience that seems to warps into reality from out of nowhere and has held the attention of “intergalactic” fans for the past two months. I have only had one similar experience in my life. The Scum and Villainy Cantina gets to extend through June 2017. Scum and Villainy Cantina, at 6377 Hollywood Boulevard, speaks to me. The idea that a film and media master, JC Reifenberg, creates a party atmosphere. You visit Event Brite and get your tickets on May 4, 2017.  This gets you any number of prizes for an event meant to celebrate all things social, fan, and out of this world. Please visit the Scum and Villainy Cantina’s official website, or the Facebook page for more information and updates.

First, all fans who purchase tickets on May 4 get a $40-discounted rate on their tickets. You get there. Receive two drinks of your choice from the Cantina specialty menu, a souvenir pint glass, an exclusive Scum and Villainy

challenge coin, and surprises throughout the night. There are also discounted ticket and merchandise packages. You could get admission and a collectible shirt, at $55, or admission,  a collectible shirt, and hat, at $65.   The all-new “June Scum Pass”,  at $200, gets you automatic entry, with a guest, throughout the month of June during regular evening hours, Thursday through Sunday, even during sold out nights, and four souvenir glasses. Sales will be limited to a total of 40 for June.

New ticket reservations are limited, and admissions will be handed out on a first come, first served basis. In June, the Scum and Villainy Cantina will revise its days, and hours, of operation to Thursdays, this is one admission from 7:00-10:30pm, Fridays, this is two two-hour admissions, and Saturdays, and Sundays. These are three two-hour admissions on each day. Fans should reference the Scum and Villainy Cantina Facebook page for walk-in visit availability.

You get an event for food, fun and  interaction with “some questionable characters from throughout the galaxy.” These are the events where you get fun, but also find surprises you never could have imagined. I recall attending an event sponsored by Johnny Walker.

It was a free opportunity to learn more about the product, test the product in different ways, and interact with others who like Johnny Walker, and come from a variety of backgrounds. This kind of event represents a smooth exterior, an interesting minor history lesson, and an almost secretive club where you get to enjoy great drinks and meet new friends.

The Scum and Villainy Cantina sounds like a massive step up

Big Dreams, Not So Small Streams

5/1/2017 12:00 p.m.

Slickster Magazine is all about fighting for the little guy. Not so long ago, we were the little guy with a handful of writers and an incomplete website. And while we aren’t exactly the Wall Street Journal (who even wants to?) we’ve grown tremendously. A large part of our success has come from the relationships we’ve been able to create with the many creative individuals in our short history. Some of the best examples of that are the people on Twitch in our series Small Streams Big Dreams. And three of those streamers have grown tremendously just as Slickster Magazine has. Today we’ll be looking at how MattyP89, ParallaxStella, and Lieutenant Eddy are doing.

MattyP89

MattyP89 was actually the first person who we ever had featured on Small Streams Big Dreams. Matty’s always prided himself on creating a warm environment where anybody can just hang out for a while. While a lot of things have changed for Matty, the feeling of plopping down on the couch and chilling hasn’t changed. Any time Matty is playing a round of Rocket League, it’s nothing but constant shit talking between himself and viewers. Matty also has given his channel a major facelift as well. With beard battles now hosting arena matches where everyone can get in on the action. Matty has managed to maintain a great attitude about everything as well. You can also catch giveaways almost every stream!  Despite the passing of his mother Matty is always ready to entertain everyone and spread some laughter to his viewers. (Although his new cat seems to get in the way of things occasionally.)

Matty’s also expanded his repertoire on Twitch as well for his streams. For a while he’d play Rocket League, and that’s about it. However he’s peppered in a few more games into his rotation. You can still catch him midair doing a few aerials, he enjoys smashing zombie brains out in the rouge-like adventure Death Road to Canada and occasionally a little bit of Overwatch as well. While he might not always dominate the matches, he’s sure to bring a great time for everyone. When we first interviewed him he had just about gotten to 1,000 followers on Twitch. Now he’s more than tripled his following and he’s joined the Twitch group Feed Me Pixels. And to top things off, he’s joined the Twitch Affiliate program, and is continuing to grow as the days go by.

ParallaxStella

The former Girl of the Week cosplayer has certainly been busy since we last checked in with her. Before, she was a cosplay fanatic with dozens of different designs in her head. She still spends plenty of time perfecting her characters, but she’s also started to go into traditional modelling as well. (She insisted we use a shot from a recent shoot for her part in the article, but I don’t think anyone minds.) She’s still an adorkable little salt machine with a clever barrage of insults and sass ready for anybody who gets smart with her. And while it may occasionally backfire on her, her charmingly frank and sometimes odd attitude is proof positive that she’s no “girrrrrrl gamer”.

Since we last saw Stella she’s moved to some new digs and her channel has more than tripled in size to just under 8,000 followers. While she’s still more than happy to blast anybody in a round of Destiny, Stella’s added a mix of horror games Resident Evil, other action games like Overwatch, Bloodborne, and Nier, and especially Just Dance to her streams. Stella actually competed in the Just Dance World Cup, and while she didn’t place first place in America to reach the finals, she did come in 29th out of 800, putting her in the 96th percentile in the country. Not bad! Stella was also admitted to the Twitch Affiliate party and the bits have been flying since she’s started.

Lieutenant Eddy

Boi, pass the butter chicken with a side of lamb sauce. If that doesn’t make sense, then you haven’t been watching the meme king himself Lieutenant Eddy. Mixing his dry and nerdy sense of humor with some legit skills we got to see Eddy dominate the rankings all the way to Master in Overwatch. And along with friends like Greenthyme, Geek, and Tizen, plenty of hilarious and clip worthy moments as well. While people may have mistaken his gamer tag for “Little Eddy”, there were no mistakes about having a great time in the chat. Eddy embraces the good times with the bad during his streams, and while he isn’t exactly a Grand Master yet, he’s having a hell of a time with everyone.

When we last talked to Eddy in January he’d been starting to test the waters with streaming. Taking a strong and loyal following from YouTube to Twitch, he’d already garnered 5,000 followers and was thinking about transitioning to streaming full time. Today he isn’t thinking about streaming full time, he IS streaming full time. Today, Eddy has amassed over 25,000 followers and is currently ranking as the 32nd fastest growing Overwatch. As a Twitch partner, Eddy has also recently passed the 500 subscriber mark as well, garnering attention from sponsors, streamers, and fans alike. (Even Kephrii, the best Widowmaker player in the world seems to have taken notice.) There’s no telling just how much he’s going to grow as time goes on. But something tells me he isn’t to concerned about how much he grows. He just cares about all the dank memes that people send him about the stream.

Tell us about your hobbies or the worst date you ever went on:  I really love going to the gym, engineering, reading books, or house decorating.

What first got you interested in the idea of modeling?

When I was 16, my mum said I should try modeling because I was tall. Then I just started to do photoshoots and applied to beauty pageants.

How is the modeling industry in Finland? Is there plenty of work to go around for the models?

Nah, there are too much models in Finland and not enough modeling works. Of course there are work for glamour models and beauty pageants winners and fitness models. But for models like me (more a hobby than a job), there are not too much work in Finland and that’s why I go abroad for modeling jobs. Atm I’m in London.

What are your dreams and goals that you hope to accomplish with modeling?

I hope I’ll get more experience and more international works. I’m an IT engineer and do engineering in my daily job, but as a hobby I just hope to get some new and different modeling offers around the world.
