Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers Can Satisfy Those Who Test It

presented by Capcom and Nintendo
Photo by William G Chandler Jr

Nintendo and Street Fighter 2 go together like peanut butter and jelly. It has a history of great, and not so great, moments as shown in this article at Polygon by Matt Leone, but it always draws attention.

Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers, for the Nintendo Switch, is a necessary game for your library. The Nintendo Switch gets you to play with games, from Neo Geo, like The King of Fighter ’98, The King of Fighter ’99, or Garou Mark of the Wolves. These are not just games to pass the time. It is all fight preparation. In a way, Nintendo Wii U made this happen. You see Injustice: Gods Among Us, Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition, and Super Smash Brothers for Wii U left excitement for more. You can go back to the Wii U’s Virtual Console and play games like Street Fighter Alpha 2 or Art of Fighting. However, you did not have a place to go redirect classic game play hours into a new game offering. For example, you play Street Fighter Alpha 2 and could hope they released Street Fighter 4 or some newer version of a Street Fighter game on Nintendo Wii U.

This did not happen. The Nintendo Switch and Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers establishes a steady change in Nintendo’s thinking. There are a lot of fighting games already on the console. In the future, you even see ARMS, a unique take by Nintendo, on the fighting genre.

Currently, Capcom and Nintendo join forces for this specific experience. It has a variety of modes. There is Arcade mode. You battle the artificial intelligence. In Versus mode, fights happen in any combination of player versus player to computer versus computer battles. Training mode lets you improve on your fighting skills. Buddy Battle is that opportunity for two players, or you and the computer to defeat a series of great enemies.

Way of the Hado is a side quest. It asks you to take your Nintendo Switch’s motion controls, play a first-person game with a series of enemies, and test yourself on three challenge levels. It works. However, it could be better. In a way, it reminds me of Sega’s House of the Dead. It needs minor control scheme tweaks, some different levels, with newer designs, and just a little story to give it that full arcade feel. Gallery is a beautiful mode. The “250+” digital art book just allows you to enjoy Street Fighter’s history. The book is a series of drawings that are crisp and unique in every way. Color Editor lets you thoroughly customize your favorite Street Fighter 2 characters. Options mode allows you to customize the game completely. You can keep the classic sounds of Street Fighter, but give the game the look of a fine animation. In the same way, you can put older graphics on the game with newer sounds.

The online game play is strong when the internet connections are sturdy. Everyone is on a similar level, for now. More online players will make the game more competitive over time. The online game replicates an experience that is similar to an arcade competition. I will say everyone needs to learn combinations with their favorite characters. The local two-player game is competitive. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller, and holder, works, but it is best to get the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller if you plan play over a long period on time, in most modes.

Overall, the controls are precise. This means your special moves have to come with purpose. What else is left? You play this game on the small screen and expect to get close. In the end, the game works well and in most settings.

Horror Throwdown: Carrie vs. Carrie

0

CarrieTitle Bout: Carrie Vs. Carrie

In The Red Corner: Carrie (1976). Written by Lawrence D. Cohen and Directed by Brian DePalma with Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, William Katt, Betty Buckley, Nancy Allen, P.J. Soles, and John Travolta

In the Black Corner: Carrie (2013). Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lawrence D. Cohen, Directed by Kimberly Peirce with Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Ansel Elgort, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell, and Zoe Belkin

Before it was a movie.

Both based on Stephen King’s first published novel, Carrie tells a story of a meek young woman tormented at home by her religious fanatic mother and bullied relentlessly at her high school. She discovers that she has telekinetic powers and, after being pushed too far, unleashes them upon her town.

Round 1 – The DirectorCarrie

DePalma gets to go a touch crazy in the third act, allowing him to explore with all kinds of crazy split screens and close-ups. His work before the prom doesn’t scream horror, but everything works so well, and the tension rises throughout, so I really can’t complain. His opposition, Peirce, does surprisingly well. She manages a slew of fun bits in the finale. Alas, the build up isn’t quite as strong, though I have to wonder if the studio didn’t get in the way.

Round 1 Score: The Original: 15 / The Remake: 12

CarrieRound 2 – The Cast

Spacek owns every frame of the original. She gives a truly heartbreaking performance and manages to give the flick a grounding in reality. Laurie is just as good, with her hyper-religious Mrs. White a thing of nightmares. The rest of the original cast is solid, though Irving is probably the strongest. The remake boasts fantastic turns from Moretz and Moore. Moretz plays Carrie with all kinds of sweetness, I really feel for the girl. Moore’s Mrs. White seems more grounded into reality, something that makes her more terrifying. Oh, And Elgort is down right amazing as the guy trying to do good.

Round 2 Score: The Original: 18 / The Remake: 16

Round 3 – The ScriptCarrie

King’s original book works because of its nontraditional process. Alas, that does make the adaptation a little more challenging. The original does alright, though it struggles in maximizing all of the setups and could use a little more work in driving the second act along. The original struggles in the same way, but gets points for an alright use of updating the nature of the bullying. Alas, the secondary characters in the Carrie remake couldn’t be more bland or pointless.

Round 3 Score: The Original: 10 / The Remake: 10

CarrieRound 4 –  The Effects

Carrie (1976) gets what it can out of a limited budget, with a few moments looking really solid. DePalma also helps by employing the split screen to help make everything feel more insane. Alas, King’s novel provides plenty of other opportunities that the 1976 film doesn’t capitalize on. The remake actually fares a little better, with a more encompassing prom destruction and more developed use of Carrie’s skills.

Round 4 Score: The Original: 12/ The Remake: 15

Round 5 – The Scare FactorCarrie

Alas, neither of these flicks end up being all too terrifying. While the remake is more intense in its conclusion, the original plays down Carrie’s humanity once she loses it. The makes her seem more like an unstoppable force of nature, and thus more terrifying. The remake makes a stronger case for Carrie revenging herself on her bullies, which allows a kind cathartic release without the scare factor.

Round 5 Score: The Original: 10 / The Remake: 5

Final Result: Carrie (1976) – 65/100 vs. Carrie (2013) –  58/100

Despite a strong cast and decent effects, the Carrie remake just can’t stand up to the original.

Fixions Genocity

Oracle Rouge  28 April 2017

Slo, thanks for taking your time to talk to Slickster Magazine.  How is the health of the EDM music scene in France?

Thanks to you man, well I think the French electro scene is still one of the best worldwide, one of the few things we can do good apparently… Especially since synthwave and cyberpunk has emerged as Kavinsky, Carpenter Brut, Perturbator and Fixions are French also. We got a lot of other talented bands and labels here, such as Volkor X, Hypercan, and many others. But what I can see now is a worldwide interest for the synth scene. When I started Fixions in 2012, there were already great projects but the public were pretty confidential.

We have interviewed many synthwave musicians from around the world.  It truly seems that this rising musical genre is spreading around the world and is not constrained by any physical boundaries.  How can you explain this global phenomenon?

Well I think the human evolution stopped in 2000, and since that year we are just moving backwards. So we are now nearly 15 years after 2000, that means 2000 less 15, that means we are back in 1985. In the next decade, everyone will take LSD, pills, and will listen to progressive folk bands with flutes. Ok seriously, I think we are nostalgic of an era we don’t really knew, I mean I’m born in the early 80s and I can speak about my mom dressings or the stories I heard in school, the stuff I’ve seen on TV, the toys I had and those I wanted… But people like my parents, who were adults in that era, only them really knew this period. So we are nostalgic about fictions and cool stuff we grew with, but it’s a very ‘romantic’ vision of this past, even when it’s about killing machines or dystopic futures.

So synthwave, and cyberpunk scenes are not only a stupid revival, it’s a real reinterpretation of the past, a very extreme reinterpretation by the way, cause we have very modern tools to play with now.

We’re living in a kind of alternate reality, designed by retrofuture fictions created in the 80s and 90s. This is not the real present, this is the future we wanted to live in when we were kids.

Your music is very densely layered, but still clear and precise.  Is this by design? How did you develop your sound?

Yes man, I like it wide and I like it wild. I’m just trying to produce the music I’d like to hear, I’m doing and listening to synthwave stuff for years and I can feel a little redundancy in the scene now. Since I started music, I always tried to create the more personal stuff I can. And not only for myself, as I’m always thinking about emotions and reactions listeners will be able to feel listening to my work. So I always take a lot of time and recoil to work on every single second I produce. I got no rules except for that one: I need it to have a soul, a ghost in the shell.

Do you have any upcoming live shows or projects that will incorporate video with your music?

I did some gigs before but as a former metalhead I’m not very comfortable yet with that ‘mixing alone on stage behind a computer’ concept. Need to work on it for to offer a more specific experience to my audience for the next shows to come. Last year, when I opened for Carpenter Brut, I used a video projection with a lot of Japanese cyberpunk anime, very weird and gore stuff, like some Otomo works, Cybercity Oedo 808, Wicked City, Gunnm footages… People apparently liked it.

And for some weeks now I’m working with David Placer, a very talented video maker. He’s doing an official video clip for ‘Crimeware’, the opening song from ‘Genocity’. The video is now 99% done and should be released in the next weeks. Wait for something astonishing guys, killer retro 3D animations, creepy cyberpunk aura, I can’t wait to share it !

What is the process that you use to select the audio soundbites for your music?

I need to be in a very specific state, where I’m feeling connected with the emptiness itself, and then I tried billions of combinations until I get 99% satisfied. The 100% satisfied state is impossible. Still no rules, I can use electric guitars, vocals, keyboards, vst… Just need that ghost in the shell magic.

Is there anything you would like to promote?

Two things, my last album ‘Genocity’ is available on bandcamp and streaming services since April, and I really think it’s killer. I tried to blend science fiction and synthwave with cyberpunk, a modern powerful production, and if you want to trip far away you should give it a try.

I also just released a tribute to the Commodore Amiga years cause I can’t get out of my mind legendary video game scores such as Dune, Turrican or Unreal. It’s now n°2 on bandcamp worldwide charts, including covers from Master Boot Record, Volkor X, Fixions and many others, and it’s available for free here: http://projectpaula.bandcamp.com

Kell Brook vs Errol Spence Video Analysis and Prediction

Kell Brook vs Errol Spence tale of the tape

Kell Brook’s Keys to Success

Quality of Former Opponents

Quality of former opponents 2.gif

Former opponents.gif

The two appreciable names on Kell Brook’s record are Gennady Golovkin and Shawn Porter. Both guys had respectable records before Kell took them on, they are to date the only two elite fighters on either man’s record. The most noteworthy advantage on Brook’s side is the fact that he’s been in fierce battles against elite level competition. All the wisdom gained from those battles may be vitally important should this fight turn into a chess match.

Crafty Jab

Kell Brook has a swift jab, he occasionally carries his lead hand a little low so it can come from outside of an opponent’s peripheral vision. His sturdy jab catches fighters by surprise it also makes them reluctant to attack. In fight’s where Kell Brook has had most success, he’s established the jab early.

When the jab is landing consistently Brook excels at linking punches to follow taking full advantage of having a good measure of distance.

Kell Brook work off the jab 2.gif

Chocolate Brownie

Brook has the power to hurt any welterweight, the jury is out on whether he hurt GGG or not but for my money if Brook didn’t have a sting in his shots GGG would’ve had far less trouble getting to him.

Brook’s power will only come into play if he takes the fight to Spence, Brook isn’t a great counter puncher so if he chooses to utilise movement over asserting control he’ll find it increasingly hard to land anything hurtful.

The self-proclaimed “chocolate brownie” (Brook’s right hand),

Kell Brook right hand lead, aka 'Chocolate Brownie'
Kell Brook right hand lead, aka ‘Chocolate Brownie’, has tremendous knock out power.

He must find a home to earn Spence’s respect. Against both GGG & Porter, most of the damage Brook suffered was on the ropes or when he was forced backwards. kell would be smart to learn from his previous experiences and not allow Spence opportunities to attack a stationary target. Brook is without question most effective when controlling or challenging the centre of the ring. Once Brook establishes control it can open doors for him to land multiple power punches.

Errol Spence’s Keys to Success

Comfortable at Long & Short Range

Some fighters prefer fighting long,

Errol Spence multiple ranges 5.gif

Errol Spence spence multiple ranges 6.gif
Errol Spence is comfortable fighting inside or outside.

Some prefer fighting up close.

Spence multiple ranges 2.gif

Spence multiple ranges 3.gif

Errol Spence is a rare case due to the fact he’s equally proficient at both. This allow’s Spence to be versatile with his offense and as result, his opponents struggle to find a rhythm.

Body Work

Something that’s neglected in boxing these days is the art of attacking the body. Spence is a fighter that loves changing levels, transitioning from the body to the head effortlessly.

Errol Spence Body work.gif

Errol Spence Body work 5.gif

There are multiple benefits to attacking the body, not only do they count as scoring shots they also compromise an opponent’s endurance. The accumulation of body shots pays dividends late in the fight at which point cardio endurance become’s a major factor. If Kell Brook decides to box on the back foot the bodywork of Spence will be a vital tool to slow Brook down.

Thunderous Power

Spence possess explosive power in both his right hand,

Thunderous power 5.gif

Thunderous power 3

and left hand.

Thunderous punch power.gif

Thunderous punch power 2.gif

Thunderous power 4.gif

When you watch Spence it’s clear to see how well he retains balance. There’s minimal wasted movement, his feet are always planted, ready to throw power from whatever position he finds himself in. Spence generates maximum leverage because of this, resulting in the delivery of concussive punches.

Prediction

Physical advantages go towards Spence, he has a superior reach to Brook (three inches) slightly taller (half an inch) and looks to me the naturally bigger of the two overall. Kell is more experienced having travelled away to face Porter & gone up two weight divisions to fight a destroyer in GGG.

The fight with GGG earned Brook huge respect within the boxing community however the damage he suffered may be irreparable. In the past orbital bone fractures tend to be an ongoing problem years after the initial break. Miguel Cotto is an example of a fighter targeting an opponent with a previous orbital bone fracture.

margarito-eye.jpg
Miguel Cotto is the perfect example of a fighter targeting an opponent with a previous orbital bone fracture.

Margarito’s right eye starting swelling early which caused his vision to deteriorate, the fight was stopped in round 10 as a result of the eye closing up.

Before a fighter steps up in levels it’s very difficult to confidently predict whether they’ll thrive or crumble under the pressure. Spence has chosen the hard route to a world title giving up home court advantage & taking a huge step up in class.

The combination of physical advantages, Brook’s last fight, and Spence’s potential has me leaning towards the young American. Something about the way Spence carries himself as well as being technically solid just gives me this feeling he will rise to the occasion.

Errol Spence wins by Tko (Rounds 6-10) #ManDown.

Roulette is actually one of the simpler casino games when compared to some of today’s popular card games, such as various forms of poker or blackjack.  Roulette would be a perfect game to get into casino gaming in general. If you’re new to the game of roulette and thinking about playing either an online casino or going to play at a land casino, knowing some basic tips beforehand can be helpful before taking a spin of the wheel.

Different Wheels

There are actually different types of roulette wheels with European and American Roulette being the most prevalent. The difference between the two wheels is that the American one has an additional slot. What this means in terms of play is better odds for the casino. Therefore, if you have the option, always choose to play European Roulette over American.

Be Choosy

Before settling at a roulette table, it is a good idea to check around and see how many players are already at the wheel. The reason for this is, that it can take a great deal of time for players to place their bets. Then following the wheel’s spin, payouts may take awhile too. You will find yourself much more engaged when playing at a wheel that isn’t so crowded. Roulette is meant to be an exciting fast paced game.

Know your Bets

While roulette is rather simple, you do need basic knowledge of the types of bets that can be placed. Also, knowing their odds and payouts is key as well. Beginners should probably stick to outside bets. These would include bets on the slot’s color and odd or even number. Granted, the payout is smaller on an outside bet than some other types, but it is wise to start slow when you’re first learning the game. You always want to protect your bankroll.

When learning to play the casino game of roulette, these tips can help you in the beginning to improve upon your skills.

Hey Arnold! Show Us The Problem Of Addiction

The Nickelodeon series, Hey Arnold!, shows us important issues through every episode. Mainly what makes it iconic is that it doesn’t shy away from real life situations and social issues. Although, this was a children series and the rating was Y-7, we see issues that hold relevance in today’s society. Today, we look at the issue of addiction.

Within the Nickelodeon series Hey Arnold! We focus primarily on our main character Arnold who is the most level-headed character in the series. One of the best thing about the series is that it takes place in Hillwood City, which is a fictional city. In fact, it’s a combination of Seattle, Portland, and Brooklyn. When you look into urban communities and the series Hey Arnold, there are numerous issues that are clear. While comparing both you see, failing public schools, crime, addiction, etc. One of the most common misconceptions is that addiction only affects adults but, in Hey Arnold, it’s found within the character Chocolate Boy.

Chocolate Dream GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Although, the Chocolate boy is only a child he suffers from addiction. We know he has an addiction in many ways. One is by seeing the many things he would do for chocolate. Things such as dive in dumpsters, and make a fool out of himself.

http://gph.is/2cS5JHS

A few times within the show we saw characters give him chocolate whenever he made a good use of himself. Specifically, in Season 2 episode 6 titled Ransom, we saw Arnold and Gerald interrogate him and throw malt balls on the floor after they got what they needed. We see parts of his addiction throughout the series when he goes through a chocolate withdrawal stage. This withdrawal was where he craved it and even had hallucinations. Similar to an addict of any hard drug.

The Chocolate boy’s addiction came from when he was younger and his parents didn’t allow him to eat it. When his parents were not around, his nanny allowed him to eat it. Mainly because it made him happy. Within the episode Chocolate Boy, we saw the school bully, Wolfgang, make a bet with him. The bet is, he can’t eat chocolate for 2 weeks and if he wins then Wolfgang will give him 10 pounds of chocolate. Arnold proceeds to go over to Chocolate boy’s house and help him get rid of all the chocolate he has. Ultimately, this can be symbolic for him going through a rehabilitation stage. The Chocolate Boy’s withdrawal stage begins to kick in as well. starts to lick ants from off of the ground and says they taste like chocolate. Eventually, Wolfgang together with the other fifth graders makes him do a dance as well.

Spongebob GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Arnold did what our school system used to do to us when it came to drugs, showed a PowerPoint slideshow on the negative effects of it. Being that it is a kid show it wasn’t drugs, it was chocolate. Honestly, this part of the episode is the most interesting. Mainly because we see where his addiction comes from. Now, the chocolate boy is using it as a coping mechanism because the nanny isn’t around anymore. This episode, in particular, showed the effects of addiction and how using a drug/chocolate can be a coping mechanism for something deeper than what the eye can see.

Horror Remake Review: A Nightmare on Elm Street

0

nightmare on elm street 2010 movie poster

Title: A Nightmare on Elm Street – 2010 Remake

Director: Samuel Bayer
Writer: Wesley Strick, Eric Heisserer
Release Date: April 30th, 2010
Cast: Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz, Jackie Earle Haley

Cliff’s Notes

A non-Englund Freddy torments the dreams of the teens of Elm Street. I’ve seen this before. This ain’t better.

Lecture

The remake craze hit hard in the 2000’s, with nary an 80’s flick left unscathed. While some of these puppies, the Ring or Evil Dead, turned out alright, more than one felt like a desperate cash in or lackluster sequel. Alas, A Nightmare on Elm Street didn’t manage to avoid the remake treatment.

There are a few things I rind pleasantly surprising about the ANOES remake. Some of the cast do nice work and Haley’s turn as Freddy hearkens back to the original Elm Street. He manages to create his own take on the iconic role without relying on Englund or disgracing the part. A few of the teens are solid as well, which really helps what is a terrible first act. The big highlight is the final act, which finally brings in some tension and allows the creative elements of the series to make an appearance. If the entire flick were as solid as the last clock, we’d be set.

But it isn’t; hell, it ain’t even close. This puppy lacks any tension for the first half. It doesn’t help that the script is a paint by numbers rehash of the first film. Sure, a few of the roles get expanded, nightmare on elm street 2010that that’s small potatoes compared to the endless, boring jump scares and lackluster approach to the horror involved. There’s no appreciation for storytelling, just a made-modern rehash of a flick that was inspirational two decades before. The entire thing feels like everyone us busy going through the motions except for the cast, who are left to carry the film.

Most notably missing is the dream logic that has defined the series. Part of the joy of the earlier parts of the series, take Part 3 for a great example, was how the dream world seamlessly meshed with the real world. You were never sure when characters were dreaming, so Freddy’s power extended not only into the dreams, but also the real world. The characters worried about falling asleep while the audience worried that they already had. Here, the dreams are so stereotypical in their slasher movie set up that the surprises count at almost nil. Sad, ’cause that’s how the ANOES remake could have rocked.

Acting

Off the top, Haley doesn’t even try to replace Englund. He does his own thing, adding a kind of sexual menace to his proceedings. His physical work rocks, though I wish the film built up to his reveal or gave him a touch of mystery. The teens are a little uneven. Dekker and Lutz are around long enough to die while Mara gets better as the flick goes. She’s more than annoying at the top, but I warmed up to her as the run time ticked along. Cassidy does well with her role and I kinda wonder why the casting between her and Mara wasn’t switched. Mara’s a fantastic actor, but she’s lost for the first hour of this puppy. Gallner is, by far, the best of the teens. He gives a solid, realistic portrayal and the fact that the flick keeps him around makes everything work better.

nightmare on elm street 2010Directing

Bayer’s first full length outing reeks of uneven. He manages a solid climax and does a few interesting things with his cast, but can’t make the first hour interesting. The lack of scares really hurts the top of the flick. Sure, this puppy looks pretty, but the lack of energy and simplistic approach to the source material leaves plenty to be desired. The ANOES remake should have been an opportunity to go off creatively, not just construct a bunch of jump scares and poor stalk sequences. Come on!

Script

Talk about weak sauce! The ANOES remake boasts a script that looks shambled together at best. The plot is lifted whole sale from the superior original and the only new parts fall into the third act. The characters here lack any kind of definition, only Krueger finds any kind of development; the teens have notion to define them beyond a few simple, generic traits. The worst part, however, falls to the lack of opportunity that the script desperately tries to hold onto.  Anything can happen in dreams, so why does the film insist on forcing chase/stalk scenes down our throat. Remember when you couldn’t tell what was going to happen next in a ANOES flick? Yeah… long gone. At least the finale steps it up a bit.

Effectsnightmare on elm street 2010

The flick looks sharp and most of the feel of the film works. We get a fair amount of blood and Freddy looks alright, though the CGI doesn’t always click. And the kills, while occasionally brutal, seem toned down compared to the rest of the series. I was longing for some of Part 3‘s goodies.

Highlights

I really dug the last act. Mara finally starts to work and the dream set up makes an appearance. Too back the rest of the flick can’t hold up.

Lowlights

It’s a remake. Isn’t that enough? Fine, No Englund or Craven.

Final Thoughts

Not a complete mess, the ANOES Remake manages a solid third act, a solid score, and a few nice acting moments for its cast. Alas, the whole thing falls apart due to a lackluster script and complete lack of what makes the series work. Watch the first 40 on fast forward or just check the original.

Hey Arnold! Showed Us Important Issues

You know you are a true 90’s kid if you grew up with shows such as Hey Arnold! Whether you were a child or a teenager. In some shape or form, you turned on the iconic series.

For some of us 90’s kids, we enjoyed kicking back watching our favorite characters navigate through city life. From the innocent child play, life-lessons, and friendship; the show highlighted important issues. Oh, we can’t forget the iconic handshake that we all tried to imitate with our best friend.

Hey Arnold Thumb Wrestle GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

One of the best things about the show was that it didn’t hold back. It showed us important issues that hold relevance today. Creator Craig Bartlett and writer Steve Viksten showed viewers important issues. Through each character, there was an issue they dealt with in every episode.

Rejection/Abandonment

Hey Arnold!

Our seemingly tough character, Helga, is one of the most interesting cartoon characters in the show. At first, we see her love obsession with Arnold and see her as a bully. Helga was seen as a bully in the show by her rude/aggression in the way she talked to people and the way she resorts to physical violence. As an adult, I see Helga in a different light.

Helga’s living situation at home is pretty rough (as a kid we never picked up on this), her mother is an alcoholic (smoothies was a censored version of alcoholic drinks) and her father usually insults her and relates her to Olga. The way Helga is talked to by her father is irritating, he usually calls her “girl” or “Olga”. For those who don’t know, Olga is the name of Helga’s perfect sister. We learn about Olga when Helga talks to the therapist in the episode Helga On The Couch, saying “She gets straight A’s at Bennington College, all the boys want to go out with her, but she has to stay home and practice the piano”.

Helga’s facing constant rejection within the show, from her dysfunctional family and within the feelings of Arnold. When it comes to Arnold, she shows a fierce side of her by calling him names and often threatening him but when he leaves, she pulls out a locket of him and shows a more “feminine” side. Being the tough character, she usually bounces back and forth between being lovely to tough. Usually, after Arnold leaves we see a poetic side to Helga even when she is praising the shrine of him.

Honestly, the way Helga treats people is how her dysfunctional family treats her. We could even make the assumption that Helga is similar to her mother, depressed. More often than not, we see Helga use her verbal aggression towards people. Key the way she talks to Arnold, calling him “football head” because she thinks that is how people show their love for one another.

It seems like Helga’s facing constant rejection within the show, from her dysfunctional family and within the feelings of Arnold. Key the way she talks to Arnold, calling him “football head” because she thinks that is how people show their love for one another.

In the episode titled Helga On The Couch”, the school’s new psychologist shadows Helga. Which in turn schedules Helga to have meetings with her twice a week. Helga’s dad receives a call from the school informing him about the meetings. Shortly after, he says “this would never have happened to Olga”. We also see the alcoholism that Helga’s mother faces when she “forgets” to make her lunch for school. While pulling a lunchbox out of the oven, Helga opens it and sees disappointment. It’s crackers, moist towelettes, and a can of shaving cream.

Within the same episode, we see the rejection Helga faces when the therapist asks her about her father. We then make another flashback into Helga’s memory where it was her first day of pre-school. Throughout the flashback, we see her family ignoring her and paying her no mind. This shows us, why Helga is the way she is.

One on one with Bellator’s Emily Ducote

Emily Ducate MMA fighter
Emily Ducote MMA fighter

5/20/2017, By Ray Vann Jr. – Contact: R.Vann@Slickstermgazine.com

Emily Ducote is a Bellator MMA fighter in the women’s flyweight division.  At the time of the this article Ducote has a record of 5 wins, 2 losses and no draws.  Of her wins, 3 were by submission, and 2 by decision.  Both of Ducote’s losses were by decision. And so, without further adieu, let’s see what she had to say:

What made you want to first get involved in fighting as a profession?

When I was a kid my grandma would always be watching MMA fights, we would sit there for hours and watch them together. She eventually convinced my mom to let me sign up for Tae Kwon Do and thats where I started my martial arts career. I wrestled in high school and moved to Oklahoma to wrestle in college, but I only wrestled for a little bit of college. I eventually found American Top Team in Oklahoma City and thats really where I decided I wanted to pursue MMA as a career, I have coaches that really know what they are doing and a great team and home here in OKC.

Has it been hard to break into the field as a woman? Have you faced any discrimination or anything of that sort from fans?

Since I have been fighting for Bellator, I have had a really good reaction from most MMA fans, it really surprised me how much support and positive comments I’ve gotten after all 4 of my fights. Of course we realize there will always be some people who have negative things to say, but we just ignore them and continue with what we are doing.

What was your first fight like? How did it turn out for you?

I lost my first professional fight by decision. Nobody likes to lose, especially a pro debut, but sometimes there are lessons we need to learn. I learned alot in that fight and was able to win 4 fights after that loss.

Who have been some of your inspirations and influences?

My family and team really believe in me, and that motivates and inspires me to be the best fighter I can be. Alot of people support you when you win, but the people who stick with you and support you through your losses are the most important people to have.

What has been the fight that sticks in your mind as most memorable? Why?

My first bellator fight really sticks in my mind because nobody knew me or my team, we just went there and showed up ready to perform fight night. That win was so special to me because its the fight that got me signed with Bellator and I am so happy to be a part of their promotion.

Your next fight is July 14 against Valerie LeTourneau on your home turf in Oklahoma. What can we expect to see from you there?

I’m really excited about my next fight, you can expect to see a better version of myself. Everything will be ready and sharp come fight day.

Emily Ducate MMA fighter
MMA fighter, Emily Ducote, does sprint training with a parachute to increase resistance.

Are there any fighters in particular that you would love to go up against some day? If so, why?

I like to focus one fight at a time, there are so many girls in and out of the division that it can be overwhelming if you are worrying about fighting everybody else. I focus on my current opponent and that’s it.

Where do you see the future of women’s MMA?

I think WMMA is getting more and more popular which is great, I think that all the high level promotions will have to open up more divisions and sign more girls. It’s really an exciting time to be a part of womens MMA, especially in Bellator.

Is there anything else that you would like to tell your fans out there? Anything you would like them to know about you in particular that we didn’t mention?

I want to say thank you to all the fans I have, everyone that sends positive comments and messages. I really appreciate and love all the support, it motivates me and gets me excited to get back in the cage. I also want to give a special thank you to all my sponsors that support me and my fight career.

Operation Indecent Proposal Mugshots | Florida Sheriff gets tough on sexual predators

0

In addition to the arrest videos here, check out today’s news conference with Sheriff Mike Chitwood.  He gives some details and implores parents to protect their children online.

For five days, online predators looking for sex with teenage girls and boys in Volusia County all came to the same sudden realization: They were chatting with undercover law enforcement officers, not children.

By Saturday’s end of “Operation Indecent Proposal,” a joint effort between the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and several other local, state and federal agencies, 14 men were arrested after traveling here to meet their victims.

“This is what’s out there lurking on the Internet. This is what you’re dealing with: Scumbag Central. I know when I left there, I felt like I needed to take a shower.” Sheriff Mike Chitwood

Among the arrests:

*Victor Williams, 40 (DOB 8/16/1976), of Palm Coast, a social services contractor who has worked with children in the past. Sheriff’s detectives are working to develop a comprehensive list of Williams’ past clients and contacts with children, and will conduct interviews with them as the investigation continues. Anyone with information that might be relevant to this investigation is asked to contact the VCSO Child Exploitation Unit at 386-323-3574.

Operation Indecent Proposal Mugshots

*Christopher Chierchio, 36 (DOB 6/28/1980), of Preble, N.Y., a registered sex offender who absconded from New York in 2015.

Operation Indecent Proposal Mugshots

*William Parshall, 58 (DOB 1/28/1959), of Jacksonville, a retired U.S. Navy civilian logistics employee who said he’s had multiple contacts with juvenile females while chatting online daily for approximately three years. Parshall booked a hotel room in Daytona Beach for his encounter, and detectives found condoms in the night stand and a vibrator hidden in the bedsheets. They also located a pair of vibrating underwear under the driver’s seat of his car.

Operation Indecent Proposal Mugshots

Many of the predators were local. Some came to a decoy house to meet their victims, while others set up meetings in public spaces. One drove about 92 miles with heroin in his car to meet with a 14-year-old. One was driven to the decoy house by his mother, and he brought condoms and an Xbox with him.

All were ultimately taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail.

Not everyone who communicated with the undercover chatters traveled to meet the decoy, but some sent explicit messages and images. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate those cases, and additional arrests are possible. So are additional operations.

“We’re going to do it again,” the sheriff said at Monday’s news conference announcing the arrests. “As sure as God made green apples, we’ll be sitting in this room again and we’ll have 14 or 15 more people up on this board… These folks that we’re dealing with are sick, twisted individuals who are wired differently than we are.”

The additional defendants and their charges are:

Cydemind violinist, Oliver Allard, talks heavy metal and the new album

Oliver Allard talks heavy metal.

5/17/2017 – Olivier Allard is the talented violinist in the Canadian based instrumental prog metal band CYDEMIND.  With the upcoming release of the new album, Erosion, Allard spoke with Slickster Magazine about some of his favorite violinists across all genres, practice techniques and preferred equipement. ‘Erosion’ will be available on iTunes, Bandcamp, Spotify and all other major online retailers as of May 26, 2017. Their first single ‘What Remains’ is available for download on Bandcamp here.

Slickster Mag – The Mahavishnu Orchestra was one of the most successful hard core jazz fusion acts ever and also incorporated violin.  What do you think contributed to their success?

Mahavishnu orchestra1973.jpg More details Mahavishnu Orchestra N.Y.C. farewell concert New York Philharmonic Hall, December 28, 1973
Mahavishnu Orchestra N.Y.C. farewell concert New York Philharmonic Hall, December 28, 1973

Olivier Allard – To be honest, I don’t listen much to the Mahavisnu Orchestra. I’m too young and grew up with a classical music background. I’m only starting to like jazz! Tigran Hamasyan and Avishai Cohen are my favorites. I would have loved to see MO live though. That kind of music takes a whole new level on stage. I can’t tell what made them successful but I can tell they had exceptional musicianship and creativity.

As a violinist, do you prefer the Mahavishnu Orchestra with Jerry Goodman, or the later work they did with Jean Luc Ponty?

I really don’t listen enough to Mahavisnu Orchestra to have a valid opinion on that. I’m gonna have to check them out more seriously… Ask me that question next year!  Both Goodman and Ponty are incredible violinists, though. So talented and imaginative.

Curveball.  Of the two previous violinists mentioned, where would you rank John McLaughlin’s musical exploits with the Indian double violin master, Shankar?  Was he better than the other two violinists previously mentioned or simply a sign of the times, for example the Beatles working with Ravi Shankar?

Lakshminarayana Shankar
Lakshminarayana Shankar

It’s never a good idea to compare musicians. Shankar (Lakshminarayana Shankar) is an absolute genius who had a role in the coming of Indian music in the West. I don’t think Goodman nor Ponty could play the way Shankar plays, but it goes both ways. They’re just different, doing different stuff with different techniques.

Even though CYDEMIND is a heavy metal, a vast amount of the repertoire for violin is spread across the ‘classical’ literature.  (*Editors note – The term classical is a catch all term that encompasses many diverse eras in western european music, including Baroque, Romantic, Classic, etc..)  What are a few of your favorite pieces for the violin?

I’m a Romantic-era type of violinist. One of my favorite violin piece would be Chausson’s Poème, which I just recently played. Apart from that, of course the major romantic violin concertos like Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius are incredible musical masterpieces. In the ‘’violin sonata’’ world, the ones I enjoy playing the most is Frank and Strauss.

Can you briefly discuss the impact master violinist Itzhak Perlman has had on the instrument.

Itzhak Perlman is THE violin beast, my personal favorite. He made so many recordings, collaborated with so many great musicians, and received so many awards. He was the violinist everybody wanted to work and record with since everything was always flawless the first take!

I also respect the fact that, even if he could make a living only out of playing, he spends a lot of time teaching. It’s his way of giving back to the younger generations. I feel it’s every great musician’s responsibility to share their knowledge and experience to the younger musicians.

Let’s talk heavy metal.  There are a handful of examples of heavy metal violin out there. Some good (Dream Theater, Octavarium) and some that are less inspired… (Anyone remember Mark Wood?).  Can you name a few obscure heavy metal violin tracks that have inspired you?

There’s a band I discovered a few years back, Ne Obliviscaris. I fell in love with the way they blend the acoustic violin with metal. My favorite song would be And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope.

Other than that, one of my idols a few years back was David Garrett. He’s a classically-trained violinist but makes a few rock cover albums from time to time. When I heard his Master of Puppets cover, I was blown away. He’s actually one of the reason’s I started Cydemind.

What brand of metronome do you use?  Should all music students and musicians train with a metronome?

I use the Korg KDM-2. Aside from being a very complete metronome, I’d say its most incredible quality is its durability! I dropped it on the floor SO many times, and it’s still working! Is also has a drone function, really useful when I want to tune or check my intonation.

Practicing with metronome is very important. Like, really. It reveals every tendency to drag or to rush in your playing. And if you do proggy stuff like I do with Cydemind, take the time to program your metronome on programs like Logic or Pro-Tools so that it follows the time signatures properly. I use the one on Guitar Pro actually, since we write music with that.

What would you like to promote?

My shoulder rest, actually! Just got a Pedi Elegante, it’s the lightest shoulder rest I ever played with. Feels like you don’t have one and sound wise the violin gains a good deal of projection in comparison to heavier shoulder rests that tend to muffle the sound a bit . Every violinist should check it out. It’s rather expensive but totally worth it.

Anything we missed?

Cydemind’s album Erosion is gonna be out on May 26th. Be sure to grab a copy!

Thanks for your support!

Biohacking Testosterone

Biohacking with Chef Joe
Get it up: Increase testosterone to kick ass at life

Testosterone is well known as the male sex hormone responsible for libido, sexual stamina, and muscle growth (not just that one); lesser known is that testosterone plays a role in a shit ton of other health functions that you might not be aware of. We are going balls deep on the subject of testosterone essentials, benefits, and how to increase your own testosterone production to become a lean, sexy, muscle building machine.

Full disclaimer I am not a doctor, research scientist, or any kind of medical professional so please consult one (if you trust those sorts of people) before you start taking any new supplements, listen to my recommendations, or begin a workout routine. Ass covered, let’s get on with it.

boost testosterone, boost testosterone naturally, does testosterone make you lose weight, how to boost testosterone, how to boost testosterone naturally, how to boost your testosterone, how to increase your testosterone, naturally boost testosterone, should i take testosteroneTestosterone, “T” , is essential for health in men and woman, T is a sex hormone and anabolic steroid that plays a critical role in sex drive, muscle development, and bone density; T is produced in the pituitary gland and testicles in men and to a lesser extent the ovaries in woman (men have six to seven times the testosterone than woman do as men require it for the production of sperm). T is essential for muscle growth and maintaining that muscle after its development, men with low T have a hard time building muscle in the gym, a sign of low levels of testosterone in men is that spare tire around the midsection, missing that six pack and walking around with a keg instead, no bueno amigo. Bone density is another big health risk as men age and T protects your bones from degrading due to old age, osteoporosis, and sports injuries. Higher levels of T are correlated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases; scientist have not been able to find a direct link, but the correlation is there, most likely because higher levels of T result in lower body fat percentage, feelings of well-being (probably from the increase in libido), and decreased total cholesterol. Last but not least is that T levels are linked with motivation in life, mostly the drive to work out and have sex, but it also has a great effect on depression, the more T a male has the lower the levels of depression (again probably all the sex).

Now that you know how important testosterone is to your overall health let’s talk about the benefits that come with increasing your over levels of T:

  • Longevity: keeping your T levels steady as you age has shown to increase life span.
  • Weight Loss: T speeds up your metabolism  helping you burn fat.
  • Muscle Repair: higher levels of T help your muscles recover faster from a workout and increase those gains.
  • Rock Hard: Yes more T will give you stronger erections… you’re welcome.
  • Cogitative ability: It won’t make you smarter, but it will make you sharper, more focused, and improve your memory!
  • Risk Taking: Men with higher T tend to take more risks in life (not always a good thing), but studies have shown financial traders with higher levels of T made more money than men with lower T.
  • Don Juan Ability: a study conducted by the journal of social psychology and social sciences did a “pick up” trail and found the men who landed the most ladies had the highest levels of T out of the study group.

If you’ve read this far I bet you’re thinking “when is this asshole going to tell me how to increase my testosterone levels” to which I will answer “right after this medical statement fucker!” Please do not go online to buy testosterone, it is illegal in many countries and if you happen to find a crazy chemist in Cambodia selling the shit direct to you it will most likely be of bad quality and really impact your hormonal balance causing a laundry list of problems, ain’t nobody got time for that shit, so what you really want to do is help your body naturally produce more T and help your body utilize it better to give you all the wonderful benefits.

Nutrition: Healthy fats like avocados, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, coconut oil, MCT oil, grass-fed butter, salmon, and grass-fed beef all provide your body the great fats it needs to produce more T. Foods like dark chocolate, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, oysters, and pomegranate also result in higher level of testosterone.

Sleep: get eight hours; your body produces testosterone while you sleep and if you cut that sleep cycle short you rob your body of T, so put the Xbox controller away a little earlier and get some fucking shut eye.

Lose weight: Fat cells rob your body of T and actually produce more estrogen, more T equals more weight loss and less fat equals more T… get it.

Supplementation: Zinc and Magnesium are great at helping your body produce more testosterone and guess what; you can buy these fuckers already mixed to make it easy; I take a calcium, zinc, and magnesium supplement daily for muscle growth, better sleep, increased mood, and higher levels of testosterone.

Vitamin D: this is a deep subject, a large number of functional medicine doctors and bio-hackers highly recommend taking 1500-2000IU’s of vitamin D a day for a lot of reasons, but for the scope of this subject the vitamin D helps your body produce less of a globulin that binds testosterone, helping your body utilize T better (make sure to get fifteen minutes of unfiltered sun a day to help your body activate the vitamin D, to get more T, to help give her more D).

HIIT (high intensity interval training): Too much endurance/cardio work can actually rob your body of testosterone, while resistance training/lifting is shown to increase the production of T, but this has a drop off point where too much of either robs the body; a moderate amount of strength training and cardio together make the optimal blend to produce T. Lifting more than three times a week can actually slow your T production way down, so don’t overdo it.

Now that you know how to boost your T level like an experienced bio-hacker, go forth and build those muscles, kick more ass at life, and have a lot more sex!

Pandemonium, Timestalker’s second album and interview

Pandemonium, Timestalker‘s second album and interview.

Like it or hate it, #synthwave is catching on around the world.  Continuing on with our trend of interviewing these musicians, this week we spoke with Timestalker.  The newest album is his second and composed, produced and mixed by Timestalker, mastered by Volkor X, guitar solo on “Pandemonium” by Dimi Kaye, and finally, the album artwork was created by Bo Bradshaw.

What advice would you like to share with young musicians?

Well, I’m a young myself and not too experienced yet either. But, I noticed that I write far better music when I listen to a broad variation of styles. I write better when I didn’t limit myself to one particular genre. There’s always something interesting to find in all styles of music that can inspire you to try a different approach to your songs, to push the boundaries of the genre. Usually the best songs I wrote was when I wasn’t listening to other synthwave artists, but something totally different.

You are based out of St. Gallen, Switzerland.  We have interviewed many sythwave musicians from around the world and now have included Switzerland.  It truly seems that this rising musical genre is spreading around the world and is not constrained by any physical boundaries.  How can you explain this global phenomenon?

The internet. It’s responsible for everything, either good or bad. It’s now possible to reach out to artists all over the world. Everyone has access to music online and can download the songs practically everywhere, illegally or by supporting an artist. But in general, underground genres wouldn’t be where they are now without the internet. Maybe people would have found the music via Drive or Hotline Miami, as many people have done now, but they wouldn’t have discovered that there’s a whole scene behind it.

On your Facebook page, you list your style of music as “Synthwave / Darksynth / Electronic / Soundtrack”.  Most of these are self explanatory, except ‘soundtrack’.  Why did you chose to include this description in your profile?  Have you composed music for film, video, or games before?

As a movie geek, I am always inspired by movie soundtracks as well. So, I mostly have a vision when I write music. “The Beyond” for example starts with a chordless, windy synthpad. I could imagine myself standing alone on a foggy pathway. Then there’s a single melody played over it; That could be when you discover a pair of red eyes in the distance, glowing eerily through the fog. Then suddenly there are dozens of eyes and they’re coming closer … that’s when the soundscape explodes and the song starts off. I try to create music that provokes imagination and pictures in the mind of the listener. Also for my future live performances, I wanna work closely with video animations that fit my songs.

How important is H.P. Lovecraft to your music?

My favorite movie for a looong time was Re-Animator from 1985, based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft. After that I began sucking in all I could find about him!  His sheer productivity (it is said he wrote about 100’000 letters in his lifetime) was always a great motivation to keep me going and his creations like the monster from “Call of Cthulhu” or the “Necronomicon” also inspired me.

Can you give us a quick list of your preferred hardware, DAW, software and some of your favorite synth patches and drum kits.

I’m really no expert in this aspect, so to avoid any laughter, I will pass on this question.

Currently, Pandemonium is your second release.  Can you share a few ways in which you have grown as a composer over the course of these albums?

As with everything, you gain experience over time. You get better at things. I always thought, first you have to master the basics, after that you can start with the experimentation. I started out pretty basic and a bit faint-hearted, but over time my music grew more interesting and with more influences outside the synthwave genre. I found my own sound, and it’s possible that this will show even more on future releases.

Do you ever find the genre of Synthwave restrictive, and if so, how do you keep the music sounding fresh and interesting?

As already mentioned above, I listen to a broad palette of different music styles. Lately, I discovered the Asian scene and was astonished by the sheer quality output there is. For example there was a genre called City Pop, which was popular in Japan during the 80s. It had everything the new wave-sound from Europe or the United States had, and they seemed to adapt it even better. If you wanna jump into that style of music I suggest to start with the 1987-record “Sea Is A Lady” or “On The City Shore” from Toshiki Kadomatsu and “Fuyü Kukan” by Tomoko Aran from 1983, really funky and uplifting stuff.

Guitarist Dimi Kaye did the lead guitar work on the title track, “Pandemonium“.  What was it like working with him and how did the collaboration come to be?

He’s one of the nicest guy I’ve met in the scene so far. He always asked for improvements to his work and did a splendid job in the end. He definitely improved the song and I am proud to have him on “Pandemonium”.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with Slickster Magazine and good luck on all of your musical endeavors.  How can fans best support you and your music?

On Bandcamp you will find my two EPs for reasonable prices.  It would mean a lot to me if you guys would stop by and have a listen. (https://timestalker.bandcamp.com) And my music can also be found on Itunes, Spotify and all other platforms.

Top five 80’s movies. GO!

That’s a tough one, there’s so many. But… Re-Animator, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Back To The Future I and/or II, The Burning, Aliens. (will probably change the next day.. lol)
