UFC 214: Cormier vs Jones Video Analysis and Prediction

Jones vs DC tale of the tape

Key Points from Jones vs Cormier 1

Jones’s array of weapons at long range

Possessing a 5-inch height advantage & 12-inch reach advantage Jones was able to strike Cormier with kicks and punches from a fair distance away. Jon was extremely effective with a wide variety of techniques when the fight was kept at kickboxing range.

Cormier’s success at close range

Although closing distance on long, tall fighters is a headache once you manage to get inside the shorter levers on a smaller fighter can generate more power at a close distance. Jones did land some good elbows in close but they were few and far between compared to the power strikes DC was able to score with.

Jones neutralising Cormier’s wrestling

Both fighters have a wrestling base but Cormier’s wrestling credentials are more impressive, having represented his country 16 times at the World Championships & Olympic Games.

Coming into the first fight Cormier’s superior wrestling background was a huge reason why he was perceived to be a threat to Jones’s title reign. Jones stuffed 8 takedowns as well as taking DC down 3 times, completely eradicating the wrestling threat Cormier was expected to pose.

Jones’s tempo and fight IQ

The phases of the fight where not much is happening can be just as vital as the fast paced striking/grappling exchanges. When there’s a lull in the action control becomes a major player in the criteria of scoring a round, in other words, when activity is low the fighter who is in a dominant position sways the round in his favour.

jones clinch control, championship experience.gif

This fight produced lots of clinching, according to the graphic above the total clinch time was 4 minutes & 23 seconds which is almost a whole round. During the clinch exchanges, Jones used his championship fight experience to ensure he was in the controlling position.

Jones’s had already gone the distance 3 times prior to the first meeting, Cormier only once. This was Cormier’s first time going the distance as a Light Heavyweight, it was clear that the 5 rounds with Jones were completely different to the 5 rounds with Josh Barnett.

Jones vs DC fight stats 2.png

Stats tell us, Cormier, although less accurate managed to keep up with Jones’s strike output for the first three rounds. In the last two the deficit in strikes attempted was close to or more than ten, more importantly, less than 5 strikes landed in both of the championship rounds for Cormier.

Factors to Consider for the Rematch

Jones’s inactivity and personal problems

Since the first fight, Jon Jones has been prosecuted for a hit and run incident, spent time in rehab, and suspended for a doping violation due to a contaminated supplement.

Two years and three months have passed since Jones vs Cormier 1, Jones has competed only once in that period. Jones got the win but that outing was in my eyes the least impressive performance of his career, you could put it down to Cormier (who was the original opponent) pulling out 3 weeks from the scheduled date causing a late change of opponent.

Another possibility is Ring rust, or perhaps all the personal issues have finally caught up with Jon Jones and he’s not the fighter he used to be.

Cormier fighting regularly

On the flip side, you’ve got a guy who’s fought four times since Jones & DC first locked horns. Not only has Cormier been active but against tough opposition such as Anderson Silva, Alexander Gustafsson, and Rumble Johnson (twice).

The one thing Cormier lacked in the run up to Jones vs Cormier 1 was a decent run at quality opposition. He got the first fight after beating Dan Henderson who’s small at the weight and in no way ideal preparation for Jones, also a win over Patrick Cummins who was unproven.

The experience of already having fought Jones as well as the following hard fights with tall, rangy, elite Light Heavyweights gives DC a better chance of winning this time around.

Cormier’s age

It’s never just positives gained from participating in these competitive fights, inevitably you will catch some wear and tear along the way. Hard fights put serious mileage on a fighters career and at 38 years old Cormier is treading on thin ice.

Cormier learned some valuable lessons whilst Jones has been away, but what have those lessons cost him?

Prediction

If Jones’s was fighting Rumble Johnson this weekend instead of Cormier, the ring rust would be a huge factor as the margin for error would be minuscule.

Cormier’s style is more about grinding opponents down through pressure which gives Jon time to find his feet, even if Cormier takes two of the first three rounds (which I think he will) Jones is still there to adjust and turn the fight around. Once an explosive fighter like Rumble finds his mark you don’t get the same chance to work yourself back into the fight, It’s all over in an instant.

Jones vs Gustafsson gave us a clear example of how Jones deals with difficulties in the cage, his response was inspiring during the final few rounds digging deep at the crucial moments.

I must admit I see this fight being closer because Cormier has had better preparation this time around, but I don’t see the outcome being any different.

Jones wins by decision

Bio Hacking with Chef Joe: Hacking a Hangover

0

I’ve been asked by numerous clients, friends, and readers to share exactly what is I do on a daily basis to burn fat, stay fit, and lead a high performance life style; these posts “Bio Hacking with Chef Joe” are the actual things I do on a daily basis to be the best version of myself possible. I hope you find these posts informative and helpful in your own journey to become a badass.

We’ve all had those mornings where we wake up with a pounding headache, blood shot eyes, and feel like the walking dead, all due to a reckless night out on the town over-indulging on alcohol. Hangovers are horrible; they create brain fog, drain our energy, and can ruin a day that should be spent enjoying life or at the very least being productive at work… but it doesn’t have to be that way! Having spent the better part of my life working in the service industry I am no stranger to putting back a large number of drinks in a night and still functioning at work the next day, but it comes at a cost, one I am no longer willing to pay to the porcelain gods anymore. So buckle up and get ready to learn the secrets to feeling great after a night of indulgence as we bio-hack the dreaded hangover!

Preparation

What to eat: Contrary to popular belief greasy foods do not help you with hangover the next day, sorry pizza and cheese fries your myth is busted! What you want to eat is a meal of dark leafy greens and protein (think a large spinach salad with salmon or grass-fed steak). Part of the biological effect of alcohol takes your liver and pancreas, so you want to prep with foods that give these heroes of your body some extra fuel to get you through the evening, dark leafy greens are what your liver needs (Popeye was right the whole time).  Protein is your friend while drinking, it the only macro nutrient that will help slow the absorption of alcohol giving your liver more time to break it down properly and keep you from getting smashed on two drinks. Be sure to eat a protein rich meal before going out on the town.

What to Drink: Every heard of sole therapy (pronounced so-lay)? I had not until last summer, it’s a great way to boost your bodies electrolytes and hydration, it’s made by utilizing mineral salt crystals to make an electrolyte drink that takes a few days to create with large salt crystals…. Ain’t nobody got time for that, so let’s speed it up shall we.

Quick Sole Recipe: 1/2tsp of fine pink Himalayan sea salt + 16oz of filtered water; put in a water bottle and shake until all those crystals are dissolved into the water. Drink it down right before your first alcoholic beverage.

Pro-tip: This also helps the next day when you are doing damage control so go ahead and set up another sole in your fridge for the morning, so it’s easy to grab and ice cold.

Pick your Poison

When it comes to hangovers, choosing what to drink is very important.

Important safety tip: A drink is considered 12oz of beer, 5oz of wine, or 1.5oz of a distilled spirit

Best: Distilled unsweetened spirits (vodka, gin, and tequila blanco), these are distilled and filtered doing half of the work your liver would normally need to do, meaning your body can break it down more efficiently and you will feel better in the morning for it.

OK Choices: Aged spirits are the next best choice (whiskey, scotch, and anejo/repasado tequila), the aging process might make the booze smoother (and more delicious if you ask my whiskey loving ass), but it also adds a layer of toxins your liver has to deal with.

Not Great: Wine and ciders are not great, they are unfiltered and not distilled meaning your liver has to do more work to break the alcohol down, plus during the fermentation process these fruits can create different toxins, molds, and anti-nutrients that can take a toll on your bodies performance and cause that foggy mental feeling you get from a few to many glasses of wine

Worst: I hate that I have to write this…. BEER (and malt liquor)….. Oh beer how I love you, delicious sours, malty stouts, and hoppy IPAs; the world has fallen in love with craft brewing over the past decade and so have I (shown by the hops tattoo on my right arm).  Beer is full of toxins, mold, gluten, and other unsavory ingredients that can rob your mental performance that night and the next day. If beer is your poisons take extra special care to help your body eliminate toxins quickly with the recommendations below.

On MixersStick to no sugar added mixers like club soda, fresh lime and lemon juice, olive juice, and flavored sparkling waters.

What to do while you’re drinking

Vitamin B & C: These lovely letters are the vitamins that are lost while you drink; adding them to your evening will help keep the hangover at bay and keeps your body functioning properly. When it comes to B vitamins get a complex B supplement as you need to reintroduce all of them to feel your best. Take a 1000mg of Vitamin C and one dose of B complex before you start to drink for the evening, and another set of both after every two drinks; this will keep you feeling great and your morning pain free.

Pro-tip: Emergen-C contains the right mix of B and C vitamins and can be purchased as a single serving at almost every pharmacy in America, so if you forget your supplements just stumble over to a Walgreens or CVS, buy yourself a Smart Water and an Emergen-c packet and mix. Easy shit

Hydrate: Drink water, we all know this and many still ignore the advice. Drink a glass of water in-between drinks, just 8-10 ounces will do, so do it, seriously…. I’m not kidding.

Coconut Water: This is a great way to add more electrolytes to your body without all the sugar of a sport drink, drink down one of these tasty guys during your night and you’ll feel a difference in the morning. Make sure you’re buying the no-added sugar kind!

End of the Night

Activated Charcoal: If you’ve drank with me in the past year, you have probably seen me handing out black pills to everyone, because activated charcoal works and it’s glorious. The charcoal helps to absorb the excess toxins and alcohol in your stomach and safely deposits the unlucky fellows into your colon where they can be eliminated. Dosing your Charcoal:

  • 2 capsules: I had a few drinks with friends after work and have a nice buzz, but I want to feel awesome tomorrow.
  • 4 capsules: Friday night and I had to take an Uber home, whose number is in my phone, wtf is this wrist band, possible brown out night.
  • 4 capsules + 2 more in the morning: Where the hell am I? Who is in my bed? I can’t remember shit and why in god’s name did I spend a hundred dollars at Taco Bell? Black out night/most bachelor parties.

Hydrate some more: Yes drink more water….. are you getting the whole water thing yet?

SleepGet plenty of rest, your body goes through its heaviest detoxification cycle while you sleep and if you poured shot after shot into your gullet the night before your body might need 10-12 hours to get it your of your system.

Maybe it works?: Liposomal Glutathione is a supplement that provides Glutathione an important master anti-oxidant in the body that gets destroyed when we drink, some health care professionals say it works great, others say it just gets destroyed in your stomach and does nothing. I have taken it a few times during a long weekend and noticed a slight difference, but I am not ready to promote it yet.

The Next Morning

Sole Therapy: If you remember the tip earlier about putting an extra bottle of salt water in your fridge then drink that ice cold sucker down and feel much better, if not coconut water is another great option.

Coffee: Studies have shown that moderate coffee consumption supports liver function and can reduce your risk of liver diseases. Moderate means less than 16oz of coffee per day , that’s a Grande at Starbucks or a medium coffee most places, any more than that the excess caffeine begins to cause other health issues.

Eggs: Eat your eggs the next morning, eggs are chocked full of cysteine, an amino acid that breakdowns acetaldehyde, the root cause of hangovers. Essential minerals in eggs also help the body get rid of toxins from alcohol. (If you are in a rush in the morning try hard or soft boiling some eggs before you go out so you have them at the ready in the morning).

Hydrate even more: Drinking plenty of water the day after drinking will help your body process the excess toxins and flush them out of your system quicker; for real, drink water, no joke.

After a bender

Ever been on a cruise, wedding weekend, or just an adult vacation where you have multiple drinks before dinner for days on end? Yeah it happens to all of us here and there, so after a couple day bender you have really done some damage to yourself. To help aid your body in fixing the damage try the following protocol for every day you spent drinking (3 day wedding bender, do the following for three days, etc..),

Inositol: This flavorless powder helps to push unwanted toxin in the liver out quickly and is a star at fixing the multiple day bender feeling that can persist for up to a week. Follow the dosing on your bottle once per day in the morning.

Milk Thistle: This little weed is another great liver detoxifier and can even repair damage to the liver; 200-300mg per day is great.

Get Sweaty: Epsom salt baths, steam rooms, sauna sessions, running in the heat, working out, anything that makes you sweat will help push out the excess toxins that have built up in your body from all the boozing.

If you follow the advice in this article you’ll have a more pain-free weekend and feel a hell of a lot better on Monday morning when you go back to work. Please drink responsibly, don’t drink and drive, and for god sake friends don’t let friends drunk text. Cheers Y’all.

Stephen King’s The Stand: Horror TV Movie Review

Take a stand

Title:  Stephen King’s The Stand

Director: Mick Garris
Writer: Stephen King, based on his novel of the same name
Release Date: May 8th through May 12th, 1994
Cast: Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan, Rob Lowe, Laura San Giacomo, Miguel Ferrer, Bill Fagerbakke, Shawnee Smith, Ray Walston, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee,

Cliff’s Notes

After a superflu decimates the world population, the survivors in the United States split into two factions. One, drawn to Boulder, attempts to rebuild a peaceful, democratic society. The other, well… they burn things and murder folks. At the center of the conflict stand a group of survivors, drawn to both good and evil, and the leaders of both factions.

Lecture

The early 90’s saw a slew of Stephen King related projects, and while some of them were pretty solid, more than a few fell flat. I’m looking at you Firestarter and Sleepwalkers. But the biggest of these puppies, and by far the most epic, stood as The Stand. King’s massive novel, the unabridged version knocks in at 1152 pages which is almost three times the average novel length, looked in many ways to be impossible to film. So many of the novel’s signature pieces worked so perfectly in novel form that doing them on the small screen seemed impossible. Luckily, King and Garris were, mostly, up to the task.

Stephen King’s The Stand works best when it focuses on the smaller stories at play. Sure, this puppy reeks of epic in terms of story and scope, but the cards that The Stand brings to the table fit more into the small ball category. It really helps that the cast here is so strong that these moments stand out to the highest degree. Add to that a kind of Americana inspired fairy tale and a slew of fantastic set ups and you get one hell of a series.

And there is something to be said for creating a massive, multi-layered world that highlights some of the best parts of American storytelling. Stephen King’s The Stand works well because it embraces both the story of the novel that inspires it and dares to do that well. A few of the twists and turns here really broadside you, changing character dynamics and forcing the plot forward in some really unique ways. Sure, the ending can’t keep up with the rest of the flick, but for a mini-series to do something this broad for this long and not pull back takes all kinds of guts.

Alas, that doesn’t mean this puppy always works. Every film has to justify its run time and The Stand doesn’t manage to pull it off once hours four and five get started. Sure, it’s almost always interesting, but watching this puppy straight through can be rough. Maybe splitting the six-plus-hours over two or three days would help, but doing this as one major piece tests your devotion to the couch. Plus, and this is just a little thing, the effects don’t match the massive budget that holds everything else in place. A little more work with the digital effects would have done wonders in the second half.

Acting

The massive cast works really welly together. Sure, it helps that Sinise is at his most likable and holds the show together like a boss. Major props go to Ringwald, Giacomo, and Fagerbakke, who each give their respective roles exactly what’s needed. Sheridan does well, though I wonder if his interpretation of the character needed a stronger push. The stand outs here, however, are Lowe, Walston, and the amazing combo of Davis and Dee. Casting Lowe against type allows the series to continue into its uncertain plot with style while both Davis and Dee prove why they stand as powerhouses withing their craft. Of everyone in this massive cast, Walston may be my favorite. It’s a joy to watch him work and he brings his best.

Directing

Garris does well building his massive feature into a single, cohesive whole. Much of his work seems to be holding the massive narrative in place, something he does well. Alas, the size works to get the better of him, with the focus on the work seeming to waiver a touch in the third fourth of the series. He also struggles with some of the horror of the piece, though I wonder if that has more to do with the medium versus his capacity.

Script

King’s adaptation works pretty well and serves up a bunch of fun to a slew of folks. His characters, always one of his strong points, rock and really drive the story well. Combine that with a slew of fun bits, all kinds of crazy social commentary, and a ton of horror goodies and then bake it in a fun mini-series oven for six hours and a quality offering pops out. Alas, the build up in Stephen King’s The Stand doesn’t really match the payoff. The finale seems a little less effective than the five hours that come before it. Lastly, there are a few moments that, while they work alright, don’t stand up as well as they could.

Effects

Hit or miss, but it was the 90’s, so I can let some of it slide. The makeup and art direction work really well, and won awards, though some of the SFX, especially the digital ones, really fall flat. I know some of that falls to time, but even for the era they seem a little weak.

Highlights

I love the plot twist in the middle of this puppy. Didn’t see if coming and it works so well. It keeps the whole thing on edge for the next half of this puppy.

Lowlights

The effects at the end really don’t work for me. At all.

Final Thoughts

Epic in its scope, though occasionally lacking in its execution, Stephen King’s The Stand rocks the mini-series shtick the right way. Sure, it’s not as good as the novel, but with a novel this good, that’s impossible.

Sad news in the horror community today as George A. Romero has died.

The legendary filmmaker, known internationally for his Dead films, succumbed to lung cancer earlier today. According to release from his manager Chris Roe:

“Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero passed away on Sunday July 16, listening to the score of ‘The Quiet Man,’ one of his all-time favorite films, with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero at his side,” the statement said. “He died peacefully in his sleep, following a brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer, and leaves behind a loving family, many friends, and a filmmaking legacy that has endured, and will continue to endure, the test of time.”

Life of a Legend

Born in 1940 in the Bronx, Romero was trained at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he eventually set up Image Ten Productions. Eventually raising just over $100,000, Image Ten

set off to produce the influential Night of the Living Dead. Telling the story of a group of strangers trapped in a farm house during a zombie uprising. Despite a slow critical response, Night ended up defining the Zombie genre and made nearly 270 times its budget worldwide.

Following Night with a series of other, more traditional films, Romero rose to prominence again in the 1970’s and 80’s, when he produced and released two additional Dead films, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. While Romero favored Day, Dawn is regularly considered to be his magnum opus. He followed these films with collaborations with Stephen King as well as a number of other horror projects. He returned to the Dead series with Land of the Dead in 2005 and continued to produce films until 2011.

What made Romero more than a horror director was his focus on horror as a means of social commentary. Night features commentary on both race and consumerism, a theme that receives further expansion in Dawn and Day, while Land comments on social inequality. Romero satirically deconstructed elements of American culture, using his zombies as changing metaphor. He didn’t create good guys or bad guys, he created people trapped with the best, and worst, of the world. His work stands as a defining moment within the genre, with story tellers throughout the world following in his foot steps.

One of the finest directors in the genre, Romero leaves behind a wife, three children, and a lifetime of influence. He’ll be sorely missed.

UFC Fight Night: Nelson vs Ponzinibbio Main Card Preview and Predictions

0

Nelson vs Ponzinibbio

Odds: Nelson -205 or 1/2, Ponzinibbio +165 or 17/10

Gunnar Nelson returns to the Octagon this Sunday night coming off back to back performance of the night wins against Albert Tumenov & most recently Alan Jouban.

Gunnar Nelson finish vs Jouban.gif

The subtle improvements in Gunnar’s game have been noticeable in those two victories, although Gunnar has looked like a competent striker throughout his UFC run he now looks comfortable and far more dangerous on the feet than earlier in his career. The evolution he’s displayed will serve him better as the level of competition gets tougher should Nelson get a win this weekend.

Nelson has been floating around the top 10 of the welterweight rankings for a few years, right on the fringe of breaking the top 5. This fight is somewhat confusing to me as Ponzinibbio is ranked #14 currently, Nelson is ranked #8. Nonetheless, he will need to beat the man in front of him to continue his ascension toward title contention.

For Santiago Ponzinibbio there’s almost nothing to lose and everything to gain, Ponzinibbio is the betting underdog, all eyes are on Gunnar Nelson, & this is Ponzinibbio’s first-time featuring in the main event after spending 3 of his last 4 fights on the prelims. Ponzinibbio is enjoying his best run since he’s been in the UFC so if he’s been waiting for a chance to seize an opportunity this is it.

Calderwood vs Calvillo

Calderwood vs Calvillo.jpg

Scotlands own Joanne Calderwood will square off in the co-headline against Cynthia Calvillo, Calvillo was one of UFC’s breakthrough star’s from 2016 winning her debut in style at UFC 209 followed by another submission victory at UFC 210 earlier this year.

A product of the Alpha Male camp in Sacramento, California, Calvillo is attempting to emulate the championship caliber fighters that have emerged from Alpha Male for several years. Urijah Faber, TJ Dillashaw, Joseph Benavidez, & Cody Garbrandt have all either held or fought for a UFC title in their time at Alpha Male. Calvillo will have similar objectives, the co-headline spot is the perfect window to showcase more of her abilities.

Calderwood is a former professional Muay Thai fighter which gives this fight a striker vs grappler narrative, the proud Scot Calderwood will have home support to fuel a respectable striking pedigree and determined toughness that she always brings to the octagon. Having fought in Glasgow 4 times she’s yet to taste defeat on her home soil.

Potential Fight of the Night

Stevie Ray vs Paul Felder

This is the fight I’m most looking forward to on this card, Paul Felder is capable of finishing fights in devastating fashion & Stevie Ray has a habit of getting involved in crowd-pleasing fights. Expect fireworks.

Main Card Predictions

Gunnar Nelson vs Santiago Ponzinibbio (Nelson)

Joanne Calderwood vs Cynthia Calvillo (Calvillo)

Stevie Ray vs Paul Felder (Felder)

Jack Marshman vs Ryan Janes (Marshman)

Khalil Rountree vs Paul Craig (Rountree)

James Mulheron vs Justin Willis (Mulheron)

No70: Eye of Basir – Horror Review

Written by Jonathan Lee. July, 4, 2017, 11:00 AM. Tweet to: @Writerscube

A Studio Makes Its Horror Debut

On the 28th of June, 2017, the Turkish studio of Oldmoustache Gameworks released the anticipated psychological horror/adventure game known as No70: Eye of Basir. Known first for being on the Steam Greenlight program back in 2015, the game was finally released for players to follow the investigations of the brothers Aras and Erhan. According to Evren Özgüner, community manager of Oldmoustache Gameworks, “Gamers have been excited about No70: Eye of Basir ever since we ran the Steam Greenlight campaign back in 2015. We’re happy to say that their patience has been rewarded. No70: Eye of Basir is unlike any first-person exploration game on Steam today: a harrowing journey that transcends blood ties and time itself.”

No70: Eyes of Basir
No, no, no–I meant below the first paragraph, not the frikin’ floor. Geez, you’ll singe your eyebrows off!

What’s In the Game?

For those unfamiliar with the game since it was first brought up two years ago, No70: Eye of Basir is a first-person adventure game that’s supposed to have psychological horror and paranormal elements in both its story as well as presentation. The story revolves around an old house that supposedly is based around a true story. Volkan Demir, founder and director of Oldmoustache Gameworks had said: “House No. 70 is out there. The game is based on real events that took place in that very house decades ago.”

As the player, you’ll play as the brothers Aras and Erhan as they investigate the old House No. 70. Apparently, the last time they had really lived there was when their grandmother was still alive. Then one brother went off and became a well-known historian and archaeologist, while the other became a creative director of sorts and mysteriously vanishes. With some time jumps in-between chapters, players witness both return home to find it filled with a sense of foreboding and mysterious happenings abound. For example, I went through the house looking for clues–and suddenly the furniture had switched places and a hallway was boarded up. Spooky stuff!

The gameplay revolves mostly around narrative puzzles that lead you from main plot point to main plot point. You eventually run across an artifact known as Basir. It looks like a decorated glass eye-piece–but really, it lets you see into the world beyond, which will come in handy when you have to look for further clues.

No70: Eyes of Basir
The power of the Basir! So glad my glasses don’t do this when I look through them.

The Basir

While the Basir is supposed to let you see into the world beyond–it feels like the world beyond is relatively empty. There were only several instances in which I actually saw a ghost, an apparition, or a clue while using Basir. And while some were a little jump-scary, the others you saw coming. I was hoping for more. But maybe there’s more to this. Maybe it’s not really about the ghosts as it is about the story behind the Basir.

Aside from a few cinematics in which we hear the brothers talk about their lives, or the house, the rest of the story exposition really comes from leaflets and pictures that you find laying around. Like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, you’ll find paragraphs of information in these letters and framed pictures. Almost all the story is told in this way. What characters we meet come in the form of those ghosts I mentioned earlier. But you don’t get a grasp of who they are. The closest you ever get to one of those “characters” is when it pushes you into a table. Oh, and one teased me with balloons.

The story eventually goes from family history and ghostly happenings to a plot about other-dimensional gates that need to be sealed. A brotherhood of people that sought to keep the world safe. And notes about this group’s collective canker sore as they try to control the Basir, but apparently can’t because the Basir has a mind of its own.

Impressions

I found myself feeling underwhelmed by the time I got to the end. Despite my gripes about the lack of character interaction, I found myself intrigued by the exposition given by those letters, those leaflets, the creepy portraits–I’m a sucker for stories, guys. I really am! And I wanted to know this great story that was waiting to unfold. I searched high and low for every tidbit of information in the game.

But the ending left me wondering… what happened?

Now, I know what happened as in “What happened in that ending?” You end up sealing these paranormal gates that keep out the dark forces (that we really don’t see, save for the few ghostly apparitions). But I didn’t feel like I walked away WITH something. Or maybe the best way to describe it is… I’m trying to figure out IF I did. It felt unfinished, and rightly so! Oldmoustache Games has already announced that there’s free DLC coming soon, and it is my hope that in this DLC there will be answers to all the questions that the ending created–and the questions that the ending did not answer.

And that might be why I’m feeling a tad empty on this game–for now. I ended up having lots of questions on the Brotherhood, the gates, the Basir, and heck, THE BROTHERS THAT WE’RE PLAYING AS. Aside from piloting these brothers around and poking at things, I didn’t feel like I knew either of them outside of their career life. Maybe I’m asking for too much. I was hoping to feel as invested in the protagonists as I felt in the mystery of the Basir and the brotherhood, these otherworldly gates, the house. I know more about the brothers’ grandmother than I know of these two guys. All these things needing to be answered and fleshed out–that free DLC better be huge.

No70: Eyes of Basir
It all kind of… left me hanging like these guys.

Final Thoughts

How do I say it? I enjoyed this game for what it was–the music was atmospheric. The Unreal Engine visuals were engaging, and created a place that begged exploration. But I never felt fulfilled at any point. So many questions, very few answers. Characters I want to really know, but I’m as separated from them as the brothers are from the ghosts and spectral sights they witness through the Basir, despite the brothers having these things happen right in front of them (it’s just… nothing really happens). Disconnection. I think that’s the word. A continual experience of disconnection. There’s a piece missing–a big piece missing from the circuit that would make this game truly come to life. There’s all this potential that I see here and there, but there’s no threading to bring it all together. Not even with all the letters and leaflets with all their exposition.

I’m sincerely hoping that the upcoming DLC will be that missing piece, that missing thread! Until then, I may have to give this game an Average score. A Buy-When-On-Sale.

You can find the game’s Steam Store Page here!

Indy PopCon 2017: Day 3

And with that, Indy PopCon comes to a close. This year has been so much fun, and we’re sad to see it go by. But that doesn’t change the fact that way you got to squeeze every little bit of Indy PopCon out that we could. And, the honor of presenting our awards for some of the best games at Indy PopCon this year.

Don't worry Deadpool. Your secret is safe with us.

Watching Indy PopCon

One of the best parts about Indy PopCon is just sitting by and watching the day go by. All the amazing different costumes and vendors is so cool. At one point I got to see somebody dressed as a little MaC, get into a boxing match with Deadpool. And then just a few minutes later four guys dressed up as the Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000 showed up. And they were all in perfect uniform! (Er, armor) The amount of different ways people did the same characters was really interesting to see. While there were plenty of Deadpool cosplays, one stood out more than the others for us…

Best games at Indy PopCon

Deciding who’s the best in something as subjective as video games is really hard. But we hear it’s Slickster like doing things the hard way sometimes. And so we held the awards on the last day at Indy Pop Con. The awards that we gave out were best idea, best art, most addicting, best party game, and best overall. Everybody here at Slickster went over all of the different games to determine the winners, by deliberation. Except however for best overall. That was decided by a fan vote to determine who really was the best. And here are your winners for this year!

So Long Indy Pop

Once again, like to congratulate all of the amazing developers at this year’s convention. It’s very hard to ever try and determine who’s the best when every game we played had heart, passion, and a real identity. And that’s why indie gaming is so important to all of us. It’s a chance to express yourself in an artistic medium wholly original onto itself. So next year we can’t wait to get back and see all the amazing games that pop up as well. We’ll see you soon Indianapolis.

Indy PopCon 2017: Day 2

Well the second day of Indy PopCon is officially in the books. And unfortunately we were completely right about one thing. There is no way in hell to see everything at Indy PopCon . We’ve been running around like chickens with their heads cut off, and I don’t think we’ve even seen a third of everything. But alas, that is the life of these conventions. A million things that you just need to see, only a few short days to see a fraction of it. That being said, we had an amazing time of the Indy PopCon in are here to tell you what we’ve seen!

Panels at Indy PopCon

We’re able to see a few interesting panels today in terms of fandoms, internet Stars, and the highlight of today: The Overwatch fan panel. Voice actors Jonny Curz and Charlotte Chung, voices of Lucio, and D.va, graced Indianapolis. After sitting in my seat and then waiting in line to ask a question, the hour-long event passed by in what felt like minutes. They were charming, funny, and absolutely worth the price of admission by themselves. Jonny was constantly cracking jokes, Charlotte was very collected and quite humble about everything. Unfortunately, not everything came up roses with us. While waiting to ask a question to the two guests, I was literally the first person in line when they said the panel was closing. So I wound up waiting for nothing. But it was still a lot of fun!

More and More Games at Indy PopCon

If you haven’t figured out yet that video games are my thing, I don’t know what was it tell you. And today was another great example of all the amazing things that game developers do. We actually got the chance to talk to play games with somebody you might be familiar with. Wraith Games of course is somebody who we got to meet at last year’s Indy PopCon and they are coming back with their game Collapsus which is better than ever.

Aside from that, we’ve gotten to see the games improve right in front of our eyes! There were a couple bugs in some of the games that were fixed when we revisited them today. And we actually have the chance to play the game Hipster by Dodeca System Games today. This card game is a better party gift than bringing a 24 pack of some nice beer. And another game that definitely deserves a special mention, was the game Text Quest. An adventure game where everything is actual text in a 3D environment that you interact with by typing.

Award Season

Today is also an exciting announcement, does slickster magazine is actually hosting the Awards this year. There are five categories that every card game board game and video game is up for. The categories include best art, most addicting, best party game, best idea, and best overall. The award for best overall will not be decided by us but by the people at Indy Pop Con, so if you haven’t voted yet make sure to vote on our official Facebook in our Indy PopCon award event! Will see you all tomorrow and will be crowning a champion.
