Interview with Sam Vlasich from Red Sky Mary

4

This week I had recently had an interview with Sam Vlasich, the lead singer of a very great up and coming rock band named Red Sky Mary. He was nice enough to take the time out of his busy schedule, to do this interview with me. Please enjoy :

Personally I would like to say, I really really appreciate you guys doing this interview with me. I love doing this, so I would like to thank you immensely for this!

Pic of red sky maryI’ll start off with an easy question. What inspired the name of the band?

“LSD is a hell of a drug…Just kidding. We were going through names and couldn’t find the right fit. This one just seemed to stick.”

Tell me more about yourself; What made you guys want to start a career in music?

” been best friends with Tom since I was two. Once he started playing music and being in bands, it just seemed right.”

How was it like starting the band? Was it hard for you guys to get your feet off the ground?

“We just kept playing our asses off. The more we played, the better we got. It was hard at times, but no matter the trial we pushed through it.”

I love your song “Gone”, could you tell what inspired the song?

“The lyric in the song, “I’m leaving all of this shit” sums it up. It’s about leaving everything that brings you down behind and doing what you want. Get out of my way!”

Red sky Mary river childWhat would you say was your favorite album that you worked on? This also applies to singular songs.

For me, it was River Child. But we’re of the mindset the best is still to come.”

What bands inspired you? I’d really like to know…

There are so many great bands doing it right now! Rival Sons, Vintage Trouble, The Temperance Movement, Blackberry Smoke, Ghost, and Greta Van Fleet. I love what these bands are doing right now.”

What inspired the imagery of “ Red Witch”?

Tom came up with the title for “Red Witch” and the imagery pretty much painted itself.”

What would you say was your most memorable Show?

The first time we played the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in NH. We opened for Queensryche. We had never played on a stage or a venue of that size before. I can still remember the cheer of crowd after we finished our first song.”

Are you guys going to be writing new material for the studio soon?

“We are currently in the process of writing new material. We can’t wait to get something new out for everyone.”

Are there any special bands that you guys would like to tour with in the future?

“Any of the bands I mentioned above. But, I would love to tour with with AC/DC, Aerosmith or KISS.”

How to Get Good Grades in College

0

How to Get Good Grades in College

College is a tricky balance of life. Many students will be tasting freedom for the first time. No parents, no teacher hanging over their head, just themselves. The many students take that freedom too far and neglect their studies. At the end of the day, attending college is still attending school. And a lot of students aren’t prepared for that next step. So I’m here to show you how to get good grades in college and kick some ass.

Scheduling Classes and Keeping a Schedule

The classes you take your first year will most likely be general education classes. Classes that for the most part, won’t be related to your major. Instead, you can think of these as classes about getting into the college groove. You’ll be able to figure out what you do and don’t like in your classes. The kind of professors you have, the time of your classes, the subject matter as well. You’ll likely take plenty of different gen eds all the way up to your senior year and that’s a good thing.

If you’re smart about it, you will be able to buffer your harder classes with some easy gen eds. I had International Trade and Finance, so I added a playwriting and a general writing course. Classes that I knew I would enjoy and succeed in. But another key to this puzzle, is knowing your professors.

Professors

Your professors are going to be very different than most of your teachers before. They will be much more hands off in their approach. They won’t be as invested in whether or not you pass (mostly), because they’ve got a lot going on. Research, conferences, papers, and so on. So it’s good to know who you’ve got. A great resource to use is the website Rate My Professors. It’s broken down by college and subject, so you’ll able to see them before you pick them for next semester.

Another piece of advice that I would give is about building a relationship with your professors. Talk to your professors after class. Ask them about the assignments (if it’s not already answered in the syllabus). Ask if they look at your papers before the final version is due. The love seeing somebody who is motivated to succeed. Most of the time. Sometimes you’ll just have a shitty professor, and have to deal with it.

Writing College EssaysPapers and Assignments

You’ll probably have to deal with that wonderful horrible temptation that is procrastination. And it will strike hardest on the big projects, and the big papers. I talked before about making sure not to procrastinate because they can lead to an all-nighter. And that’s true you really shouldn’t wait until the last minute. But there’s more than that when it comes to writing a successful paper. The first thing you need to do is read your rubric. And then you need to reread it. Because that is your baseline for every paper and every assignment. That will tell you exactly what you need and probably how to do it as well.

The next thing you need to do, is set up an outline. Never start a project and never start a paper without an outline. Because an outline is going to be your map to success in college. It will give you a plan, it will give you a way to find weaknesses, and it will make working on it that much easier.

So that’s about before, but what after? Well, once you’ve got your paper or project done you don’t really have it done. Because what you need to do next, is find somebody to look at your drafts. The best person to show it to before it’s due is your professor. They will tell you exactly what is wrong with it and exactly what you need to do to fix it. (Unless they’re a shitty professor, or they just don’t feel like it) the second best option you have is going to the library and the academic services office at your university. There you can find tutors, academic advisers, and other studious people to help you. If you’re writing a paper, the Writing Center at your university will be a huge help because they can show you what’s going wrong with your paper in terms of format, style, and grammar.

Dealing with Stress

Oh shit. I don’t know how to read.

The worst thing you can do for yourself in college is psych yourself out. Everybody gets stressed in college. Everyone hears a voices that thinks they’re not made for it, like they’re useless, like they can’t do it. That voice is dead wrong. You can succeed in college. You just need to know how to handle stress. Some of the biggest sources for stress will definitely come from classes. But sometimes it can come from somewhere else. Maybe work has you stressed. Maybe one of your clubs has a big event that you’re trying to practice for. Or maybe you got dumped. These can all happen. So how can you fight the stress? Here’s some quick tips.

Have a little fun: Listen, sometimes the best thing to do is just step away from everything for a little bit. That doesn’t mean go on a bender ends up waking up in Vegas with a wife named Sugar Shae. It means to go play some video games. Read a book. Give yourself time to just enjoy.

Catch some Z’s: Go the fuck to sleep. Seriously. Don’t stay up until 4 a.m. every night and try to get 8-9 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep stresses you out bad and only leads to more trouble.

Talk to Someone: It’s alright to talk about how stressed you are. Seriously. If someone rags on you for being “emotional” they can fuck right off because you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

We’ll talk more about stress in the future as well, so stay tuned for more ways to de-stress yourself while in college.

Settling the Pound-for-Pound Debate Part One #6 to #10

0

Over the course of the past few years, Boxing’s pound-for-pound list has become somewhat of a controversial topic, scour the internet and you’ll rarely find a list that resembles another.

The main reason why I assume the lists vary is due to the lack of clear criteria, so to provide a ranking which has no confusion I will first detail my personal criteria ordered from the most to least contributing factor.

Criteria

Quality of opposition

Form/Activity

Titles (Especially at multiple weights)

Manner of victories

#6 Guillermo Rigondeaux

Rigo p4p article.jpg

Record: 17-0 (11 wins by KO) 1 no contest

Notable Wins: Nonito Donaire.

Titles Held: WBA, WBO, & The Ring super bantamweight world champion.

Rigondeaux has been robbed of the chance to add more notable names to his record because multiple fighters have blatantly avoided him, Carl Frampton vacated his belt and moved up despite having no issues making weight.

Scott Quigg & Abner Mares have been in and around Rigondeaux’s weight division but none of them have ever pursued a fight with Rigondeaux, Leo Santa Cruz reportedly wanted $3m dollars subsequently pricing himself out.

At one time Nonito Donaire was ranked as the best fighter outside of Floyd Mayweather & Manny Pacquiao, Rigondeaux took him on as an underdog and displayed his technical superiority by defeating Donaire with relative ease.

He may not have the most fan friendly style but there is no doubt Rigondeaux is almost the complete fighter, a true master of ring control and almost technically flawless.

#7 Vasyl Lomachenko

Lomachenko p4p

Record: 9-1 (7 wins by KO)

Notable Wins: Gary Russell Jr & Nicholas Walters.

Titles Held: WBO featherweight world champion & WBO junior lightweight world champion.

After losing to Orlando Salido in his second professional fight Lomachenko has bounced back strong.

Top prospect Gary Russell Jr couldn’t keep up with Lomachenko’s dancing feet, Roman Martinez was flattened with a well timed right hook, & Nicholas Walters was battered into submission by a constant barrage of combinations.

Whilst Lomachenko’s style seems to be catching fans attention, the world awaits a fight between Lomachenko & Rigondeaux which will provide each fighter with the chance to put a concrete world class name on their record.

#8 Manny Pacquiao

pacquiao p4p.jpg

Record: 59-7-2 (38 wins by KO)

Notable Wins: Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley.

Titles Held: WBC flyweight world champion, IBF super bantamweight world champion, The Ring featherweight world champion, WBC & The Ring super featherweight world champion, WBC lightweight world champion, IBO & The Ring light welterweight world champion, WBO welterweight world champion, & WBC light middleweight world champion.

Summarizing Pacquiao’s career in a few simple paragraphs is too complex a task so instead, I will justify his placement.

I don’t have a multitude of currently active fighters without questionable losses or lack of recognized names on their records to choose from, so I’ve had to go with a guy who’s past achievements have been exceptional.

A 10-time world champion in 8 different weight divisions. During his prime, he took on future Hall of Fame Boxers climbing the weight divisions with his captivating offensive style.

#9 Leo Santa Cruz

Leo Santa Cruz p4p

Record: 33-1-1 (18 wins by KO)

Notable Wins: Abner Mares & Carl Frampton.

Titles Held: IBF bantamweight world champion, WBC super bantamweight world champion, & WBA featherweight world champion.

A gritty win over the talented Abner Mares thrust Santa Cruz into the spotlight.

Carl Frampton handed Santa Cruz his first loss two years after the Mares fight, the pair rematched 6 months later Santa Cruz avenged his prior loss and in turn handed Frampton the first defeat of his career.

Santa Cruz & Abner Mares will meet again in October of this year.

#10 Sergey Kovalev

Kovalev p4p.jpg

Record: 30-2-1 (26 by wins KO)

Notable Wins: Nathan Cleverly, Bernard Hopkins, Jean Pascal

Titles Held: WBO, WBA, & IBF light heavyweight world champion.

Another Eastern European KO machine, Although he came up short against Andre Ward twice (albeit under controversial circumstances) Kovalev is still one of the best fighters on the planet.

Kovalev first announced himself on the world stage in his stunning stoppage win over Nathan Cleverly, since then he’s beat Jean Pascal on two occasions and out pointed the legendary Bernard Hopkins in a technical fight which showcased Kovalev’s ring IQ.

There’s still plenty of time for Kovalev to rise up the list in the coming years, a fight with Adonis Stevenson which has been brewing for some time could now be more likely bringing two quality power punchers together in what would be an intriguing fight.

How to Shoot a Big Load – NSFW

How to Shoot a Big Load

So, apparently a lot of our readers have been searching for and reading our article, How to masturbate without getting caught.  To be honest, when we published it, it was on a dare and totally a joke.  Somehow the common sense how to guide to choking the chicken took hold, and now people around the world are actually reading it.  Lock the door, dumbass. Sheesh…

Well, in the era of internet porn, we might as well ‘go there’ and examine another one of the wonders of male life.  In Shakesperian dialect, “How to nut more?“.  In more medically grounded jargon, what creates large ejaculatory volume?  And, just in case you have no idea what we’re talking about, here’s Wikipedia to clear it up:

Semen, also known as seminal fluid, is an organic fluid that may contain spermatozoa. Semen is produced and originates from the seminal vesicle, which is located in the pelvis. The process that results in the discharge of semen is called ejaculation.

Here are 3 ways to increase seminal fluid.  Oh, and we’re not doctors or scientists,  so don’t take this seriously.  Also, we’re not getting any money from penis pills marketing companies either.

Boost Testosterone

Contrary to what SJW’s would have you believe, not all men are created equal.  Recently we had a guest writer, Chef Joe, give us a step-by-step guide on how to biohack testosterone.  While most of you will never become a pornstar, there are simple things you can do to boost your male hormone that pretty much… makes you a man.  Quickly stated, testosterone is the steroid hormone that hormone that stimulates development of male secondary sexual characteristics.  You know, like, growth of facial hair, a deeper baritone voice, the sudden urge to get off the couch, sharpen an axe and go chop down a tree… shit like that.  By boosting testosterone naturally you may be able to shoot a bigger load.

Oh, and if you need a guide on how to be a manly too, check this out.

Hydrate

Since we’re talking about fluids and plasma, this just makes sense.  The human male body is comprised of about 60% water.  This is vital to the survival of almost every major function within the organism. From manufacturing hormones (see above), to lubing joints, or shock absorbing catastrophic hits to the body,  without a doubt, staying properly hydrated is one of the best daily activities you can do to help you cum more.

Even if it doesn’t actually increase the size of your load, maintaining a proper amount of water in the body’s tissue is good business practice.  Think about this; You’re stranded in the middle of a desert.  What kills you first, lack of food or lack of water?   The answer – Lack of high speed internet! Seriously, according to the Mayo Clinic, you need 8x eight ounce glasses of water per day.  That’s approximately 1.9 liters.  Bottoms up and you’ll be on your way to some firehose worthy loads.

Abstain

We all know that squirrels stash away their nuts for the winter.  Be like a squirrel and avoid coming for a set period of time.  While there is a lot of evidence beginning to surface about the effects of dopamine addiction in the high definition porn streaming era, break free from the cycle.  Now, this is assuming you aren’t Wilt Chamberlin and have your own personal harem of willing participants.  This particular urban legend about abstaining  goes something like this… When you haven’t blown your load in a while, your system naturally retains and stores the semen inside your body.   Think about it like a resovior for a dam.  Then after an undetermined amount of time, you happen to succumb to the edge to rub one out or maybe even get lucky with that girl next door. The dam will burst and a flash flood of man-anise will shoot spectacularly from your love gun.

Hope you laughed when you read this.  Have any tips on HOW TO SHOOT A BIG LOAD?  Leave them in the comments below.

Interview with Zach Davidson from Vendetta Red

0

Vendetta Red

I wanted to create a sound and capture a feeling that I rarely heard or felt, Zach Davison

Here is a recent interview that I had, with the lead singer of Vendetta Red – Zach Davidson. He was a really great guy to work with, and I hope you guys enjoy it!

First of I would like to say, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview with me, I am extremely grateful, and excited to work with you. lets have fun with this ok!

Hello and thank you so much for talking with me.”

Mike Lopez – First of a simple question, what inspired you to start a band?

Zach Davidson – I wanted to create a sound and capture a feeling that I rarely heard or felt. I knew I had music in my head that could make people feel adrenalized and inspired so I had to do it.”

Vendetta Red Between The Never and The Now
Album art for Between The Never And The Now

I love the imagery of your album “between the never and the now”, what inspired you to go with that particular style for your album cover? This also applies for your other album “ sisters of the red death”.

“Thank you very much. For “between the never…” We were trying to have the album art be interactive sort of like a treasure map within the artwork with hidden lyrics and little secrets.

For “sisters…” we initially wanted it to be like a mini bible but we didn’t have the budget and so we did an economical poster style layout instead.”

Vendetta Red Sisters Of... the Red Death
This is the cover for Sisters Of The Red Death

Speaking of “ Sisters of the red death “ what is the meaning of the title of the album?

“It is referential to a doomsday cult from early last century and is meant to evoke solidarity between women who want to take over the world.”

What would you say is your main influence when writing music?

“My main influence is other artists that I love. When I hear an amazing song I get inspired and My brain startz trying to reconfigure melodies and basically I have to pick up the guitar and write. ”

I am really curious as to what happened when you toured with ACDC, and I would like to know more about the situation from your point of view .

“We only did one show opening for AC/DC and they were fantastic. Probably one of the best bands of the classic rock era by far. Looking back on it I remember their fans hating us from the minute we walked on stage and calling me a “faggot” and screaming for us to get off stage before we even played a note so I went into the audience and started kissing dudes right from the first song. Needless to say we didn’t make any fans that night.”

Are you discourage when people don’t like your music?

“Honestly yes. I have always had a hard time getting people to like my music and It can be really depressing sometimes. At the end of the day I’m not just making music for myself or my ego, I sincerely want people to hear it and really get obsessed by it. Just like I do with my favorite artists.”

How do you make yourself known to new listeners? through social media? or touring with other bands who’s genres are different than your own?

“We are willing to try everything at this point and I’m so stoked to be working with a label again. I can’t wait to see what avenues of exposure we can uncover.”

What would you say , was your most favorite concert show you’ve performed?

“December of 2010 was our reunion and by far the best show Ive ever been a part of. I Finally felt the connection with an audience and the validation and appreciation that I’d been working for my whole life.”

Vendetta Red
I wanted to create a sound and capture a feeling that I rarely heard or felt, Zach Davison.

I heard, that y’all are releasing a new album soon, could you tell me more about it?also what was your most favorite part about making it ?

“Yes its coming out in the fall and We made some really fucking great songs. Sounds like us of course with genre hopping and experimentation right at the start and of course some signature soundscapes refined and expanded. I cant wait to hear what you think.”

Will you be touring for your new album soon? If y’all are what bands would you like to go on tour with ?

“We really really want to tour hopefully we can go out with rise against or something that would be a dream come true.”

What next for Vendetta Red?

Next we will be trying to make fans and play some killer shows.”

Bill to Support Nationwide Legalization Enters Senate

0

Many people thought they would never see the day, but New Jersey Senator Corey Booker seeks to implement new legislation that could take marijuana off of the government’s list of Schedule I narcotics and help speed the legalization progress across the country.

The new bill, known as the Marijuana Justice Act, not only seeks to decriminalize marijuana, but it also hopes to impose penalties upon states that disproportionately target certain communities for drug related offenses and set up a fund designed to help improve the quality of life in areas most hard hit by the war on drugs. “You see these marijuana arrests happening so much in our country, targeting certain communities – poor communities, minority communities – targeting people with an illness,” Booker announced via Facebook Live. Should this bill pass, Booker promises that those groups will “actually see positive things coming out of that experience.”

In order to bring about these sought after improvements, the bill proposes that the government set aside up to a half billion dollars in what would be known as a “Community Reinvestment Fund.” This money would then go directly into job training programs, public libraries, and a variety of other endeavors designed to help rehabilitate areas of the country that need assistance the most.

“This is the single most far-reaching marijuana bill that’s ever been filed in either chamber of Congress,” Tom Angell, founder of the pro-legalization group Marijuana Majority, told the press. “More than just getting the federal government out of the way so that states can legalize without DEA harassment, this new proposal goes even further by actually punishing states that have bad marijuana laws. Polls increasingly show growing majority voter support for legalization, so this is something that more senators should be signing on to right away.”

Despite this support, however, the bill is not expected to pass through the Republican dominated Congress, and opponents have already begun to appear out of the woodwork to fight against it. ““Given the opioid epidemic, Booker’s legislative energy would be much better spent implementing solutions to that crisis,” Kevin Sabet of Smart Approaches to Marijuana told reporters shortly after news of the bill was made public. And it is not only Republicans and anti-marijuana campaigners who stand ready to strike down the pending legislation either.

“I’m not there. I think there’s a lot about marijuana we don’t know,” California Sen. Dianne Feinstein told journalists at Rolling Stone. “I think marijuana has potential dangers to it. I think they need to be looked at – calibrated. I think we need to be concerned about young people, without judgement, particularly in cars. Particularly on Saturday night, smoking marijuana, candidly.”

This kind of opposition, however, flies in the face of recent scientific findings, and according to a report by NBC News, “Hospitalization rates for opioid painkiller dependence and abuse fell 23 percent on average in states where pot was allowed for medicinal purposes, according to the study published earlier this year in Drug and Alcohol Dependence. And hospitalization rates for opioid overdoses dropped 13 percent on average.” So perhaps, if politicians were so concerned about the opioid epidemic as they seem to be, they might want to investigate marijuana as a safer alternative, rather than continuing to fight a losing battle against it.

And while this bill is not likely to pass, there is still hope for the future. Sen. Booker is a frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nominee, and if he continues to push forth such a progressive agenda, it seems like that much sought after dream of nationwide legalization might not be that far away after all.

How to Save Money in College

2

College is expensive. So we here at Slickster are here to give you a heads up on how to save money in college. This way you’ll be able to budget for and avoid fees, or at least minimize them.

Hidden Fees in College

We all know about tuition rates, room & board, student loans, etc. But what a lot of people don’t realize are they hidden fees in college. The kind of expenses that sort of sneak up on you.It could be something like a matriculation fee, or an “activity fee”. These are fees that go into things like paying for all the clubs on campus. There’s not much to stop these fees from happening unfortunately. But if you’re looking into college, ask them about the other fees. Because the will try to slip them past you.

Buying College Textbooks
Buying College Textbooks is expensive. Go used. Use the previous editions.

Books

The absolute bane of any student’s existence. Those damn textbooks. Paying for books in college can be one of the most painful parts of your next four years. After I graduated high school, I got money from my friends and family. (Thanks guys!) And 90% of it wound up going to books. Why? Because I bought books at the university bookstore. Never buy your books at the college bookstore! The markup on these things are ridiculous. See if your books are available on half.com, rent your books with Amazon, check eBay. But never buy them at the bookstore.

Another good way to save on books? Buy the previous Edition. In my public speaking class I had a book that was on its 11th Edition. I used the 8th Edition. All the information was the same it was just laid out slightly differently. I was able to study just as easily as my classmates. Because the truth is, nine times out of ten, nothing changes when they publish a new addition. All that happens is they are paying professors to use their new book. And that cost comes back to you. The difference between buying the newest addition at the College bookstore and getting the 8th Edition used is monumental. The example I just gave you wound up saving me about $200 just for one book. The newest version was about $230. I bought it for $25 and change.

Food

Ah, food. That thing I need to consume in order to not die. College is weird, sometimes you wind up forgetting to eat because you’re so busy. Don’t do that. Make sure you’re eating, but make sure that you’re eating right. A common issue with college students that we always want something quick and easy. And because many of us have no idea what we’re doing, that means McDonalds. Or Pizza Hut. Or Chipotle. It’s fine to go out every now and then but do yourself a favor: Don’t always go out to eat and go to the grocery store.

You can save a huge amount of money just by going to the store and having food ready. Things like macaroni and cheese, rice with beans, shredded chicken and vegetables are all meals that have saved me plenty of money down the line. There are plenty of websites where you’ll find quick and easy meals that you can make in your dorm room.

ComputersLibreOffice

Truth be told, I’m a bit of a technophile. I love having the latest computers, games, and technology. But that doesn’t mean I don’t know how to save money on computers. If you got to have a laptop, you probably don’t need to have the newest laptop. Buy a refurbished or used laptop online or at the local computer store. If you don’t need a laptop but still want a computer, build your own. It’s a lot less scary than you think, and there are plenty of guides online.

Another great way to save is on software. Instead of buy Microsoft Office, use LibreOffice. Even with the student price for Microsoft Office, it doesn’t save money in the long run. You only get it for four years with the $80 “student price”, and then it’s back to a yearly fee. LibreOffice is an open source version of Microsoft Office and comes with its own versions of PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access, and Visio. The layout takes a little bit of getting used to, but it’s a huge savings down the road. And you can save it in Microsoft compatible formats. So you can actually take your work over to Microsoft Office at the library computers, and back to your computer on LibreOffice.

Budgeting

This one’s really simple but it needs to be said for the people in the back. Make a budget and keep it! In college there’s so many things you want to do, things to buy, and so much alcohol to drink. If you’re going to listen to anything from this article it’s this: Do everything in moderation, and don’t exceed your budget. If you want to go out with your friends, that’s fine. But don’t go crazy with the spending. This is your first taste of adulthood. So you need to act like an adult. At least a little bit.

Curse of Chucky

0

Chucky has been a part of my life since I was six years old.  The original Child’s Play is still my favorite movie.  I have watched all the sequels time and time again.  Even though they got a little cheesy over the years, Chucky has always been my go to.  And yes, part three is just horrible, and Bride and Seed of Chucky are straight up comedies, but therein lies the difference between those sequels and Curse of Chucky.  This movie goes back to it’s horror roots that the first movie had.

g

Nica is the main character of the film and lives there with her mother Sarah (Chantel Quesnelle).  Nica is a paraplegic.  She is played Fiona Dourif (True Blood), and yes she is the daughter of Brad Dourif (One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Rob Zombie’s Halloween).  The voice that we have all come to love as the one and only Chucky.

It starts off with this package arriving at Nica’s, house. music in the background is just eerie.  It’s kind of giving you the implication that this is not gonna be another cheesy Chucky movie.  Don Mancini (Creator of the franchise) wanted to get away from the fun cheese of the last two movies and go back to the original horror roots.  A great idea to say the least, I don’t think some people would want another cheesy Chucky flick.  I enjoy Bride and Seed of Chucky, but they are absolute brain candy.  This one does to Chucky what Wes Craven’s New Nightmare did for Freddy, which is make them scary again.

The delivery guy gives Nica the package and she and her mother open to find and a brand new Good Guy doll.  It was so refreshing to see him restored to his former glory.  Franken-Chucky looks cool and all, but Cute Chucky is just so much more creepy, I think anyway.  That same same night the terror begins.  Nica is awaken in the middle of the night by her mother screaming.  She goes downstairs to find her mother impaled with a giant set of scissors.

The next morning Nica’s sister Barb, Brother-in-law Ian, little niece Alice, and their nanny Jill arrive.  Now the fun can really begin.  Before the killings start happening Nica goes to give Alice the doll, but it’s gone.  It was sitting in the chair in the living room when they arrived.  You can see Nica questioning in her head “What the hell?”.  As the day goes on, little things keep happening that arrises Nica’s suspicion.  The biggest one being where did the doll come from?  So she calls the company and they tell her its from an “Evidence Depository”.

As the evening goes on, Chucky begins with hiding Alice, having her believe that it’s a game of Hide-and-seek.  Then he starts his killing spree.  He electrocutes someone with a bucket of water which in turn shuts off the power.  A classic horror movie cliche.  Rainy night, no power, a killer lurking inside the house…  Before the power cuts out Nica googles ‘Chucky doll evidence’.  Of course it brings up articles about the murders of all the previous films, and finally she gets to pages about Andy Barclay very shortly after discovers the truth about Chucky.  Throughout the night he kills them all one by one.  A cop arrives and Nica is covered in blood holding a knife.  Like Andy Barclay in the first films, no one believes her when she tells them Chucky did it.  Thus I think gives the title of the movie.  The ‘curse’ being that no one believes people who come into contact with Chucky.  Would you believe someone saying “A doll killed my family”?  She ends up getting locked up in an asylum for the criminally insane which leads into Cult of Chucky.  Which I hope to review when it comes out in October.

What I like about this one is the fact that it goes back to being creepy, and made Chucky not so campy anymore.  It may have taken almost 30 years, but Chucky has finally embraced the whole Killer Doll motif.  There is a reason that he chose this family, but I won’t tell why.  The fact that Chucky is in disguise is a great concept. We get the best of both worlds in a sense.  And Alice says one of the best lines in the movie.  She’s praying with her mother and she says “Chucky says there is no God.  He says ‘Life’s a bitch then you die bleeding like a stuck pig’.  Every time I hear her say that it cracks me up, because it’s reminiscent of Andy Barclay in Child’s Play when he says “Aunt Maggie was a real bitch and got what she deserved”.  What is it about kids cussing in movies that makes us laugh?

I love the casting and the little treats we get at the end after Nica gets committed.  With the budget that this film had, Don Mancini and his team made it work.  The house alone was great and was character in itself.  It definitely gives the movie that classic gothic feel.  Also Nica’s character arc is one for empowerment.  She’s in a wheelchair and is physically the most vulnerable of Chucky’s victims.  She still takes him on and fights. Even though she ends up in a nuthouse, she’s alive and will continue to fight along side Andy Barclay in the upcoming sequel, Cult of Chucky.

Square Enix: Gems of the Past You Should Play

Written by Jonathan Lee. July 25, 2017. 11:30 PM. Tweet to: @Writerscube

The Nostalgia Age

It’s been out for a while now. Square Enix has been busy, and Final Fantasy 12 was re-released in glorious HD on Playstation 4’s everywhere! And so far it’s been getting a pretty warm, sometimes super enthusiastic, reception from fans.

We all know that Square Enix has been cashing in on the nostalgic desires of its fans: Final Fantasy X (PS3, PC, PS4–can I be the first to call that it’ll be re-released on the one-day-to-come PS5 in 4K?), Kingdom Hearts (I’m not even going to count all the decimals in their titles), and let’s not forget the more recent Tomb Raider (2013) that was given a “definitive” transfer to the PS4 after it’s PS3 success. It’s clear that fans like to have their favorites brought to the more modern platform. They don’t want to leave them behind! I don’t either!

And that Final Fantasy 7 remake? I think we’re all excited for that.

But there’s more than just Final Fantasy-related titles. Whether or not they have Disney characters bouncing around the place in them, out there on the shelves of your local game store, probably sits one of these gems that you’ve been missing out on. (Until now! No need to thank me.)

Let’s take a look, shall we? Hopefully you’ll remember some of these.

These Diamonds Are (Should Be) Forever

Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve: Where the Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell… and will make you spontaneously combust!

The first gem that comes to mind is Parasite Eve. The monster design was disturbing for its time, probably the best part of the game, really. The gameplay was like a marriage between Resident Evil and SquareSoft’s Active Time Battle system. And the story wasn’t half-bad. What made it stand out was just how different it was. You weren’t fighting zombies. You weren’t fighting big-headed aliens from polygonal spaceships. It was like what if Japan got its hands on John Carpenter’s The Thing, and mashed it with a fever dream. Imagine how these creatures would look in HD? How about 4K? Square Enix, get to it!

At the moment, it’s only purchasable through the Playstation Store for the PS3. If you haven’t tried this game, I highly recommend it!

The Bouncer

The Bouncer! Can’t you hear it? That dude at the start that always says the title. This beat’em up action game had some impressive co-op, and a story with multiple endings that didn’t disappoint. The characters weren’t anything special but they at least were unique enough to not forget them. It was a departure from Squaresoft’s standard line up of JRPGs. And I thought it was a brave move. It took what games like Fighting Force had and took it the extra mile. It’s unfortunate that a remake is unlikely for this one, however. Despite it having a devoted following, it doesn’t seem to have convinced SquareEnix to look back on the title.

Unfortunately, this game isn’t available on the Playstation Store. You’ll have to find a PS2 and an old copy of this game to try it. (So get to that local game store and find it before someone else who reads this does!)

Einhander

Geez, where do I begin? This bullet-hell-esque side-scrolling shooter was a blast with your usual power-ups, ship models, and awesome bosses. Gameplay-wise it didn’t stray too far from formula. It’s aesthetic appeal was undeniable. And goodness gracious, someone made up something like gun pods to finally explain the on-the-go weapon pick ups that your ships do in any shooter.

With better game development tools and much more powerful machines out now, I think this game could be brought back and given new life! The bullet hell shooter genre has been on a resurgence for the past handful of years. Thanks to platforms such as Steam, developers big and small have been able to churn out some great titles to rekindle the interest. If you ask me, it’s the perfect time for Einhander to come back!

Chrono Trigger

Speaking of gems of the past, how about some of that time-traveling Chrono Trigger? I’m going to take a slight detour here. This title should be preserved as is. It’s not exactly a small game. It may be harder to remake this in HD (a total remake). Hear me out. With Final Fantasy 7, the developers already have some 3D references to work with. Chrono Trigger doesn’t have any. The ground-up design work would need a lot of time. Sadly, it may get lost in Duke-Nukem-Forever-Development-Hell. I’m sorry, my fellow JRPG fans–I wouldn’t risk this one. Some titles might be best enjoyed as we remember them.

What Else Should Be Remade?

Did you like this list? What other games by SquareSoft/SquareEnix do you think should be given a chance at being remade in shiny HD? Do you think Chrono Trigger should be given a chance? How should SquareEnix pull it off? On the subject of SquareEnix–who’s excited for Kingdom Hearts 3? Let us know in the comments below!

Icons of Horror 2-Interview with Trent Duncan

YouTube has come a long way over the years.  Independent filmmakers use it as a means to show their work without having to go all the way to Hollywood.  Fan films have really made their mark the internet.   Director Trent Duncan is one of these independent filmmakers.  Trent comes from Florida, runs his own film school, and has made a handful of VS. films which involve the horror icons of the 80’s and 90’s.  I had the opportunity to talk with Trent Duncan Friday about his latest film Icons of Horror 2.

Trent Duncan:  “Just a little back story:My buddy Cheyanne and I.  He has the costumes, I have the cameras.  We decided to make a fan film because people watch that stuff.  That’s what they look for it on YouTube.  Maybe they’ll come across my channel and watch some of my stuff, and maybe they’ll watch some of my other stuff.  They were just really interested in the fan films, so we were like ‘Wow! We should just make fan films.’ We’ve done a handful now, probably 6 or 7.Our first Icons of Horror 1 is about an hour long, and that one was the really popular one that got us continuously going.  That one has over 21 million views on YouTube.  So that one is huge.  We did a couple of short ones and I just combined them all into one long movie.  That one was really popular I was like ‘Wow, we need to do a part 2’.  So this new one that I just released is the part 2 to Icons of Horror.  This one, I’m hoping, is going to be just as popular.  Folks have been asking about it for a long time and we just kicked out this past sunday and it’s already at 50-60,000 already.”

Slickster Magazine: Why did you decide to put some comic book characters in with the horror genre?

Trent Duncan: “For one, it helped push the story along.  For Harley Quinn’s character, we have a doctor that’s going inside Hannibal Lector’s head to retrieve the key to the puzzle box.  So I was like ‘well if i have a psychiatrist doctor that’s trying to go in someone’s head, I could just have a character, Dr. whatever..  Or I can take somebody that’s IN a franchise and use it.  Though it’s not a horror franchise, it still gives me another character and another marketing piece as well.  Another reason that I used Harley Quinn, of course popularity comes into play when marketing a movie.  I wanted to do an origin story in the horror franchise of how Harley Quinn became Harley Quinn.  In the movie she’s not even Harley yet.  She’s Dr. Harleen Quinzel.  So what I show in my origin of how she becomes crazy and transforms into  Harley Quinn, is that Freddy Krueger has come back and is inside of her nightmares.  He’s kind of holding her hostage, and then he controls her body to do his bidding.  She’s witness to all this and is traumatized.  There is this guy inside of her head that’s using her body to kill people and go after stuff and she can’t do anything about it.  I wanted to create kind of stockholm syndrome, and little bit of how someone watching all that can drive you crazy.”

It was very creative to give Harley Quinn an origin story in the horror realm.  There are always going to have your haters that will never give different takes on origin stories a chance.  That’s what is so great about Trent’s films.  He takes characters that we know from childhood, and gives it a new twist.  It’s like watching a comic book.  In comics anything can happen.  They have Batman and the Ninja Turtles in the same universe now.

Slickster Magazine: The witch character? Who was that? Tell me how that came about…

Trent Duncan:”Tamara.  She is from a horror movie called Tamara.  And what I wanted was a female antagonist to be kind of Albert Wesker’s right-hand woman to do his bidding.  But the fact that this Tarmara girl from this horror movie, which is not a very widely popular movie.  She has the power of touch. She touches someone casts a spell and thus has control over them.  So I figured that’s how we’re going to control Michael Myers.”

Slickster Magazine: It’s awesome how you were able to bring so many different stories together.  You have Resident Evil, Candyman, and Hellraiser, etc.  Was it difficult coming  up with a main story to bring all these together?

Trent Duncan: “It took almost a year.  And I was just throwing ideas all over the place.  Then finally it hit me at one moment.  I came up with idea of Albert Wesker [Resident Evil stories] is going after their D.N.A, and throw a revenge story in their with Freddy, and Pinhead.  The Pinhead costume was so tricky, I just had him come out at the end.  That will be the main fight scene at the end.  Albert Wesker, in the Resident Evil Series, wants to create super-soldiers.  They have the Nemesis project.  So my idea for part 3, is to develop all the D.N.A they’ve [Umbrella Corp.] got from all these killers, and they use that to create the Nemesis project.”

Slickster Magazine:  I heard them make mention of Project Alice.  Are you planning on throwing her in the mix somehow?

Trent Duncan: “Yea.  I teased that too.  Just to bring her out in the third one.  I’e been toying with the idea of Femme Fatale where there’s female horror characters in addition to Freddy and jason and Leatherface.  You have to have those guys otherwise people will get upset.  So if I throw Alice in there that’s cool.  But if not, no big deal but at least I set it up.  So that way I have it.  I won’t have to introduce a whole reason why she’s there.”

Slickster Magazine: So from start to finish-From writing to final product-how long did this project take?

Trent Duncan: “From start to finish, I would say an entire year.  That’s writing the script, shooting the movie, and editing as well.  Writing the script took about a month or so.  We only filmed only about fifteen days, but that was over the course of two months.  Then there is editing.  So we wrapped up around early November and the editing took a while.  There was a lot of green screen stuff we did.  A lot of 3-D elements where I built these rooms they were in, a lot of special effects.  It took a lot longer than I thought it did, but I was very happy with how it turned out.”

Slickster Magazine: What were some of the difficulties behind the scenes?

Trent Duncan: “When you have a bunch of horror characters, one difficulty is making those characters look realistic on camera.  Close enough to replicate Hollywood, but not to make it cutesy to where you can tell Freddy Krueger has a silicone mask on.  The Pinhead make-up looks a little not spot on because we don’t have the 6 hours to sit in a make-up chair.  So the challenge was making some of these characters look authentic but still doing it on a low budget in a reasonable amount of time.  For instance Freddy’s mouth didn’t move very well because of the silicone mask.  So the way I would light it kind of dark on his face so we didn’t always see his face.  Then when I would edit it, I would edit around his lines.  So when his lines were speaking, you would see the first part of his line then I would cut to the other person.                                                                                                                                                                                                             I’ve been doing these for a while now, and it’s all about pre-production.  You know getting all your ducks in a row before everyone gets there before you start filming.  You’ve got to plan everything out properly and anticipating stuff that might come and the troubles you might have.  There’s always going to be something minor on days of, but we’re still able to push forward and work around it.”

Slickster Magazine: The music.  I remember in our last interview, you said to get around the copyright laws music has to be slightly different.  Was that a problem this time around?

Trent Duncan: “Yes.  So for the main action music I “royalty free” music from a guy named Kevin MacLeod.  His website is incompetech.com.  He’s very popular in the short-film/indie-film realm because he’s got a lot of music on there that he offers for free, or very low payment.  You just have to credit him in your film.  I also have another gentleman that will recreate some of these songs for me in order to make them sound similar to the original songs, but not taking them directly from the studios.  Because there’s obviously copyright stuff on that.  In the case of the Jeepers Creepers song, that song is “royalty free”.  It was made back in like the 1930’s, so you can use that original song.”

Slickster Magazine:  What do you have planned for the future?

Trent Duncan:  “So I plan on doing one more installment and wrapping it up [Icons of Horror].   I usually try and read the comments from the fans and get their intake.  A lot of people enjoy the cross-franchising.  But there are a lot of horror fans that are like ‘why is the punisher in it?’.  Sure they’re comic book characters, not horror characters.  But they still have a dark side that you could easily make into a horror movie.  So my idea was to make them a little darker and dabble on the horror realm.  And also to get a little popularity and get some attention from some of the folks outside the horror genre.  For part 3, I plan on having an all out large battle similar to Captain America: Civil War.  Where all the big names come in and just have a big and just fight each other.  Just have a royal rumble showdown.  Really go out with a bang.”

Trent Duncan gives a shout out to his buddy Cheyenne Autumn Hess who is his co-producer.  His website is alwaysinarmour.com  Icons of Horror 2 can now be seen on YouTube.  It’s fun and inventive.  It brings many characters together, but not in way that doesn’t make sense.  We can expect to see more Icons of Horror in the future.  Check out his YouTube channel.  Search Trent Duncan.

Mayweather v McGregor Betting: Outcomes Analysed

0

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are two of the most charismatic, crowd-pleasing warriors to emerge in the last two decades of sports entertainment. For his part, Floyd Mayweather has equalled the 49-0 record set by Rocky Marciano in September 1955 – and, in a perfect climax, did so exactly 60 years after it was set. Meanwhile, Conor McGregor’s swaggering demeanor, brash (and expletive-ridden) promos and scintillating knockouts have established him as a true ‘people’s champion’ in the octagon.

Inevitably then, with the confirmation of their meeting on 26 August, came an unstoppable surge of publicity. The two have been inseparable, with an array of press conferences erupting into chaos, serving only to add more fuel to the already-uncontrollable ‘fire’ that has been #MayweatherMcGregor on social media. With the hype relentless, emotions can often fog the inexperienced bettor’s decisions – especially ahead of an event which will not only be remembered for generations, but may also provoke other MMA fighters to switch to boxing, and vice-versa.

With three possible outcomes, it is important for anyone placing a bet to know the odds as they currently stand, with exactly one month to go until the big night:

Mayweather win via KO / DQ

An MMA fighter in his prime taking on a semi-retired boxer represents unchartered territory for everyone, regardless of how much a self-proclaimed ‘expert’ they purport to be. Although one bookmaker is currently offering odds of 20/1 on a Mayweather win, current Mayweather vs McGregor betting tips reflect a consensus among bookmakers that Mayweather should dispatch McGregor with minimal fuss.

Although aged and now unfit to take on another full-time professional boxer for 12 rounds, Mayweather is still experienced enough to open up a can of the proverbial on McGregor at the slightest error.

McGregor win via KO / DQ

Although professional boxing attire will be an alien concept to McGregor, he has a golden chance to shock the world if he can channel his superior fitness, and youthful virility, effectively within his movement. In addition to having youth on his side, McGregor is also accustomed to fighting for longer durations, with UFC bouts lasting five minutes – a whole two minutes longer than a round of professional boxing.

Ultimately, this would explain the relatively short odds of 6/1 in favor of a McGregor win via knockout, with fellow UFC fighter – and evident betting man – Tyron Woodley believing that such an outcome is possible:

(STRONG LANGUAGE)

With no submissions or groundwork involved in boxing, McGregor will also have the ability to press home territorial advantage through clinching when cornered. McGregor also boasts a superior reach to Mayweather, which will enable him to fight more conservatively in phases if necessary.

Decision win

An MMA fighter in his prime taking on a semi-retired boxer represents unchartered territory for bookmakers and bettors alike to negotiate. Even though both fighters have previous for utter savagery, neither will want to lose face in front of an almost-universal audience. As such, the possibility of a decision win should not be ignored.

Often, it is the case that the most hyped fights fail to live up to expectation, and with Mayweather aspiring to become the first 50-0 boxer in history, it will be in his best interests to take the fight seriously and do that which he only ever done in the ring – win.

The Lies of an All-Nighter and How to Beat Them

0

We’ve all been guilty of it at least once. Pulling an all-nighter because you haven’t studied and you need to cram. Maybe it’s an exam you’ve been putting off studying for. Perhaps it could be that project that you’ve had an entire semester to finish. Or that 15-page paper that you don’t even have a title for. At the end of the day, we’ve all been tempted with the infamous all-nighter. And it is the worst thing you can do for yourself.

The All-Nighter: Bad for Your Grades

Listen, I get it. The temptation to just put everything off until the end of the semester is huge. Who goes to college to study anyways? Everyone knows it’s not about getting the degree your paying tens of thousands of dollars for. It’s about babes, booze, more babes, and even more booze. But the problem is if you flunk out, so do the babes and booze. So what you need to do is man up, do your work, and get your life together. Because college is that last little bit of freedom from the scary “real world”.

If you want to make it out on the other side, you need to get some good habits. Because relying on all-nighters constantly means you’re relying on procrastinating. And if you procrastinate on paying your bills? They turn off the lights. Procrastinating getting your work done at your job? They fire you. Procrastinate on calling your grandma? Better explain why you were too busy to call at the funeral.

I can give you a first hand example on why all-nighters are a bad idea. I pulled an all-nighter to finish a paper, knowing that I also had exams to study for. Instead  working beforehand, I didn’t do anything until the last minute. I wound up getting my paper done at 5 in the morning. Oh by the way, I had an exam at 8 in the morning.  I fell asleep halfway through the exam and got a 20%. Want to know what I stopped doing after that? I stopped putting everything off and got my damn work done. And I’ve got more than anecdotal evidence as well.

In a study at St. Lawrence University there were several issues that came about for students and their grades. The average GPA for students that did not do all-nighters throughout the semester was 3.2. Those that consistently did? 2.95. A difference of nearly 10% in overall grades. An all-nighter is the symptom of bad work habits.

Effects of Sleep Deprivation, All-Nighter
Effects of Sleep Deprivation from All-Nighters

The All-Nighter: Bad for Your Health

It’s never a good idea to not sleep. Sleep deprivation has a lot of risk factors involved in them. Not only will you start to hallucinate and suffer memory loss, but you also increase your risk of things like diabetes, heart disease, obesity. And with the… Less than sanitary living styles of many college students you really shouldn’t worsen your immune system.

That all-nighter that I pulled trying to get that paper done? I was useless for the next three days. I was lucky that it was during the weekend and I was able to sleep as much as possible during that time, because if it was during the middle of test week I would have failed everything.

Pulling an all-nighter, it’s a stressful thing for the body. Especially if it’s to do something already stressful like studying. And let’s be honest, college is stressful enough as it is. Between the different classes, clubs, balancing your social life, and that existential dread of what’s after college, it’s rough! So if you try and add not sleeping enough as well? You’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’.

All-Nighter, note taking
Just sit down and do the work folks.

How to Beat the All-Nighter

Well it’s all well and good to say not to pull an all-nighter. But how exactly do you make sure that it’s not a problem in the first place? It’s said time and again that it’s all about making and breaking habits in college. That is oh so very true. If you’re able to put in the work, you’ll never have to worry about cramming again. Here are a few key strategies for successful study habits that I’ve used and succeeded with.

  1.  Know when all of your deadlines are: If you stay mindful of when everything is happening it’s a lot easier to prepare for them.
  2.  Set aside time for studying everyday: It sucks I know. Studying is boring as hell. But even if it’s only 15 to 30 minutes a day, it can be the difference between passing and failing.
  3. Get enough sleep: A lot of college students are constantly sleep deprived. And because of that, they feel that an all-nighter is fine. It’s just a little bit less sleep,so it won’t do them any harm. So if you make sure you know how important sleep is you’ll be a lot less tempted.
  4. Stay focused: College is the ultimate distraction. There are way too many things to do and it makes goofing off way too easy. That’s why you need to pay attention in class now more than ever. Your professors will spoon-feed the information you need to know to you if you pay attention.
  5. Talk to your professors: 99% of the time your professor is not going to be that evil asshole from the movie you once saw. They’re regular people who want their students to succeed. And if you show the initiative to go and talk to them after class or during office hours it can mean a world of difference. They have those hours for a reason so use them.
  6. Set aside time for yourself. It may sound counter-intuitive but having goof off time is important. Because if you just work work work work work you’ll go nuts. So schedule yourself some time and follow that schedule. You’ll feel refreshed and recharged and ready to get back to work.

Final Words of Wisdom

So the next time you think that you want to put everything off until the end… Don’t. It really just isn’t worth it to pull an all-nighter. The work that you put forth will not be as good as it could be if you just put the work in beforehand. It’ll stress you out, can make you sick, and make you fail. It’s better to just have good habits, do the work, and enjoy yourself. College is a stressful time, so don’t make it any harder on yourself than it already is.
