GGG’s Blueprint to Victory

Kazakh Thunder

The most potent weapon GGG possesses is his unique power.

GGG shows his fierce power

Judging by how little contact he needs to cause physical damage and the reaction of his opponents it’s plain to see GGG carries freakish power in both hands. The power advantage is something that is clearly on GGG’s side.

Pressure/Work Rate

GGG’s strength is dictating the pace of the fight and breaking opponents down, he is primarily a fighter who focuses on offence. Throughout his career, we have seen GGG stalk, trap, and punish opponents ruthlessly with a high volume of power punches.

GGG pressures Kell Brook

In September of 2016, GGG took on Kell Brook who was moving up to middleweight for the first time in his career, being the lighter man you would have expected Brook to be the one to favour a high tempo. As the Compubox stats illustrate below that was not the case.

golovkin-brook-compubox

Over the course of 5 rounds, it was Kell Brook who was struggling to keep up with GGG’s fierce pressure, by the end of the fight he had thrown 40 more punches than Kell Brook and still looked the fresher of the two.

Granite Chin

GGG’s ability to take a good shot has enabled him to attack without having to worry excessively about making mistakes, we’ve seen Golovkin take a good shot and continue without any signs of trouble on multiple occasions.

Canelo’s Blueprint to Victory

Crafty Counters

One way to nullify oncoming pressure is to create consequences for mistakes, Canelo does this extremely well by reading punches and countering opponents. Although Canelo doesn’t have the type of power GGG carries, he does possess wonderful timing and speed which used effectively can be just as lethal.

Smart Defence

GGG & Canelo both welcome a scrap, the big difference between the two is that Canelo is more defensively responsible. Even during the heat of battle, Canelo takes calculated risks carefully weaving his head and body under attack whether he’s on the ropes or in the centre of the ring.

Familiar Surroundings

Canelo has been in fights of this magnitude before, this is the most important fight of his career also the most dangerous but Canelo has the benefit of sharing time in the ring with two all time greats.

Canelo Alverez vs. Floyd Mayweather .gif

HOF opposition.gif

The Mayweather fight was a tough defeat and yes Miguel Cotto was past his prime, however, the experience gained from those fights has been priceless.

Canelo is a much-improved fighter compared to the one who fought Floyd Mayweather, he displayed this in his tactical battle with Miguel Cotto where he showed that he is now better equipped to compete with a fighter of the finest quality.

Practice is the best form of preparation, for GGG the bright lights of Las Vegas, the big fight atmosphere, and the media leading up to the fight will be a first. Canelo has been here before.

At 27 Years old & still in his athletic prime Canelo has the experience of a seasoned veteran with all the benefits of being a young fighter.

Prediction

There are two possible avenues I see this fight going down, the first scenario is GGG gives the same respect to Canelo that he gave Danny Jacobs and the fight is a technical affair focused more on scoring points than dealing damage.

The second scenario is GGG pushes a hard pace from the bell, all-out war ensues & the fight finishes within the distance.

You have on one hand an aggressive fighter who likes to take the initiative and be first to the punch, on the other hand, a fighter who prefers to let his opponent come on to him and counter.

The vital question in this fight? is GGG’s offence greater than Canelo’s ability to counter?

Irrespective of whichever route the fight ends up going down I think the combination of Canelo’s superior speed and GGG’s lack of speed,

lack of speed.gif

GGG slow.gif

GGG slow 2.gif

will see Canelo beating GGG to the punch for the majority of the contest.

Of all the opponents GGG has faced I see some similarities between Canelo and Kell Brook.

Brook’s sharp counter punching skills, movement, and speed gave GGG serious problems. What Kell Brook lacked was the size and power of a genuine middleweight which I expect Canelo to have.

Canelo is a better fighter than anyone GGG has ever fought, the same statement isn’t true for Canelo, so I assume it will take GGG a little longer to adjust to Canelo’s style.

There could be some hairy moments for Canelo, he may even need to get up off the canvas to win but once he gets a feel for GGG’s rhythm his finer boxing skills will be the defining factor which separates the two men.

Crowdfunded Schlock: How to Spot a Bad Kickstarter

I’ve got to be honest. Doing the Kick Ass Kickstarter series is incredibly difficult. Why is this? It’s actually quite simple. 75 – 80 percent of the stuff you see in the gaming section for Kickstarter is absolutely atrocious. They are uninspired, ripoffs, and downright shovelware at times. The difficulty with this is that it gives great Kickstarter games that do need legitimate help a bad name. It’s hard to talk about how good one game is when it’s surrounded by 50 games that are broken, unplayable, and downright bad. It’s a shame too because I love a good Kickstarter. Today we’re going to discuss some of the major issues with Kickstarter games.

Bad Lego Football Game
Lego Football? Pass. Just like Seattle in the Superbowl.

Play-Doh Games: “Where’s the rest of it?”

Perhaps the most obvious examples of bad crowdfunding games are what I like to call the Play-Doh Games. These are the kind of games that look like a two year old crafted some horrid characters with the Play-Doh they were given. These games will be nothing more than a poorly cropped set of screenshots. Usually made by 15 year old wanna be game developers. They think they’ve got the next million dollar game on their hands so they demand a ridiculous amount of funding. Problem is that there’s no gameplay, no sound, and no actual game. It’s nothing more than just a couple screenshots that were made using the Unity Engine. These things will never get more than a couple dollar donated by friends or family. Thankfully.

Eco Spirits Kickstarter
No guys, this is not pokemon. How could it possibly be that?

Ripoffs

It’s one thing to take a game and be inspired by the classics. It’s another to do nothing more than rip off their formula and call it your own. There are a plethora of games that are very clearly re-skins of classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, the Mario Brothers, and more on Kickstarter. These games may even be fundamentally sound some of the time However, they also have about as much originality as an Amy Schumer stand-up act. Inevitably, these games will get some level of funding but they rarely get to 100% of what they need. These are games that lack polish, have very little to add to the formula timer adventurous for fledgling game developers. Luckily their numbers are dwindling as Kickstarter has started to crack down on these.

Ouya Kickstarter
The original Kickstarter that promised too much.

Promising the World

Then you’ve got games that seemed to promise to out-do everything play tidal that is ever graced gamers. They promise things like real time strategy, in fighting games with state-of-the-art graphics, MMO elements, celebrity voice actors you name it. The games sound like they’d be phenomenal even if they were to include only a quarter of the stuff they suggest, but then you look at the donation goal. They want 500,000 dollars to make the game! For one, lot of money for a Kickstarter. And second of all, there’s no way that all of that could be included in a budget of only, 500,000 dollars. These will raise monumental amounts of money, but they also wind up nowhere close to what their goal is. It’s all right to aim for the moon, but you better hope you’ve got enough fuel to get up there.

Full Service Kickstarter
Wanna guess what the theme of the game is? They’re all “massage” specialists.

Shitty Visual Novels

This one might be a preference thing, but i’m really sick and tired of all of these visual novels on Kickstarter. The amount of times where some anime romance game filled with stock characters and no discernible gameplay, originality, or depth is visible get funded annoys me. Not every game has to have a tremendous amount of depth. But the amount of teenage girl wish-fulfillment material on Kickstarter is kind of crazy sometimes.

These will be games that just have still images of a bunch of same-faced anime hunks vying for your attention. And then when you see the games on Twitch, the people playing it just skip all the text to see the next images! All they care about is getting to the “romance” scenes in the game. Because if we’re being honest, the games turn into soft-core porn very quickly, which is what they actually are half the time. Porn games. Inevitably, these games wind up making ridiculous amounts of money and get 5 to 15 times what they’re initial goal was.

Mighty Number 9 Kickstarter
Mighty Number 9 had the potential to be great. And it wasn’t. It actually sucked.

How Could this Kickstarter Possibly Fail!?

A lot of what ails Kickstarter can be summed up with what has already been said. Games that are just flat out bad ideas. But then you get those games that are totally different. They’re original. They’ve got something about them that just screams next Big Thing. These could be Games inspired by the past but put a new spin on it. Or they could be completely new ideas with wonderful art direction, solid demos available, and a lot of support from the developers. These games will have very realistic standards for Their donation goals. They’ll continuously update people during the campaign. The game just looks fantastic. You think to yourself “How could this game possibly fail!?”

And then the game gets funded. Then the game gets made. Then the game gets released….

And it sucks. And you swear you’ll never touch a Kickstarter project again. Until you do.

Horror Review: It (2017)

0

Written by Josh Brewer, September 10th, 2017, at 2:00 a.m. Tweet to: @theJWBrewer

Title: It (2017)

Director: Andres Muschietti
Writer: Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, Gary Dauberman
Based on It by Stephen King
Release Date: September 8th, 2017
Cast: Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Bill Skarsgard

Cliff’s Notes

A group of kids discover their town houses a seemingly all powerful monster with a hell of an sweet tooth. And what does it prefer to a good old PB&J? Children. Yummy, delicious children.

Lecture

Let’s be clear, I walked into this summer with three Stephen King flicks on the docket. And the first sucked. So. Hard. Luckily, I had It (2017) to look forward to, so I felt like I may be able to feel a little better about seeing the latest King yarn on the screen. And boy, did I get lucky.

It (2017) works in a pair of amazing ways. First and foremost, It is a fantastic horror flick. The slew of scares come early and often, each packed to the brim with evil craziness. The events on screen get a major boost from the cast who, beyond being awesome actors, are all age appropriate. Like Battle RoyaleIt (2017) gets a ton of mileage our of having a young cast, upping the ante in terms of tension and scares. Because the kids are younger, because they are limited, everything hits so much harder.

But It is even more fantastic in using horror you construct a metaphor about the difficulties of growing up. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Babbadook before It – see what I did there?- It (2017) uses its monster to parallel the crumbling world around our heroes. Bullies, racism, and child abuse all fall into the scope of It, and once our heroes start to fight back against their literal fears, It becomes even more successful. In fact, it becomes one of the best pure horror flicks I’ve seen in quite a while.

Does that mean everything works well? Pretty much. Sure, there’s a little too much CGI for my taste, and I think the flick could be a little shorter in the second act, but the fantastic cast and scares keep me in my seat and the rest of the flick just rocks.

Acting

I’ve got to be honest, every one of these actors kicks ass. The Losers are, without a doubt, some of the finest child actors I’ve come across. Each and every one of them stands up solidly to the best folks around. I don’t know if I can pull out a stand out, they’re all that good. Speaking of stand outs, Skarsgard takes the role of Pennywise and really makes it his own. It was going to be impossible for him to compete with Curry in the 1990 miniseries, so Skarsgard makes the role all kinds of different. There’s something childish about his monster that combines a kind of amazing joy and complete evil. Does this mean we get a pair of horror icons out of the It movies? Yes. Yes it does.

Directing

Muschietti does all of his work well, showing off a more controlled sense of style from his earlier work, specifically Mama. He manages a few fantastic horror bits and really pulls the best work from his cast and design team. Sure, a few scenes seem a touch repetitive, but with a cast of this size, that may have been unavoidable. Oh, and he threatens children like a boss, showing a fantastic mean streak when the film needs it.

Script

When I see a team of three or more screenwriters, I tend to get a little worried about the quality of the flick. Luckily, It (2017) manages to gather the best parts of the novel, build a fantastic set of characters, and provide a ton of wonderful horror bits. Sure, it does feel a little long in places, but the work here really stands out, especially compared to the other King adaptations out there.

Effects

While not flawless, the CGI gets in the way occasionally, most of the effects here rock. Bonus points go to the perfectly designed Pennywise, who works as the stuff nightmares are made of. We also get a few fun gory bits, so that’s nice too.

Highlights

I know it’s in the trailers, but the photo bit rocks my socks off.

Lowlights

I could use some less CGI… and… that’s about it.

Final Thoughts

A fantastic pure horror jolt to the system, It (2017) does everything right, from the scares to a fantastic cast. I found it even more moving on my second viewing, highlighting the wonderful metaphor work and standout atmosphere.

Coming Down With Something, Is The UFC Struggling With a Weight Cutting Epidemic?

1

Ray Borg, Illness, Weight Cutting
Borg between rounds, in prime condition

While no one’s debating his toughness (11-2-0), could Ray Borg, be the latest casualty of near-impossible weight cutting? Friday morning, the UFC announced the much anticipated, championship bout between the “Tazmexican Devil,” and prolific Demetrius Johnson was indeed canceled, the supposed culprit being—viral illness.

Coincidentally, Borg, has had his fair share of weight-cutting issues; most notably missing weight in his fight with Louis Smolka by nearly five pounds (129.5), and being summerly fined 30% of his total purse when Smolka agreed to a catchweight bout.

Further stoking curiosities, Friday also saw Borg’s nutritionist, Dr. Michelle Ingles release a statement claiming the illness “wasn’t weight related.” To which Borg issued his own,

“I want to say thank you to Dr. Davidson, the UFC and to Jeff Novitzky for looking out for my health and best interests.”

“I also want to add that I am no longer working with Perfecting Athletes and Michelle Ingels, who was not authorized to speak on my behalf.”

With a slew of fighters succumbing to such illnesses so close to fight night, Amanda Nuñes (now headlining the weekend’s event) included, are we seeing both a physical and economic urge to end drastic weight cutting? As the UFC and its ranks of fighters grows larger and larger, is it not prudent to examine a restructuring of the weight classes?

Or, will we continue to see what we have so far, endless more canceled matches hours from precious main events and fighters struggling to fulfill the physical mandates of their contracts, wether in the best interest of their health or not?

Mark Hunt Interview

By: Ray Vann Jr.
9/8/2017, #MMA #MarkHunt
@MarkHuntFighter

Mark Hunt InterviewThis past week, I was lucky enough to get in contact with UFC super star Mark Hunt. Mark took the time out of his busy training schedule to sit down and talk with us, giving Slickster an exclusive interview that gives us a new glimpse into the mind of a warrior. And so, without any further adieu, let’s see what he had to say.

Lets start from the beginning, what first got you into mixed martial arts?

What got me into MMA was that it was a new challenge. I had already won the K-1 kickboxing world title and was looking for something new to chase and a new dream to follow, and MMA offered that challenge.

What was your first fight like? Did you win or lose?

My first fight was a Muay Thai fight. The guy was more than 30 kilos heavier than me. I was 95kg and he was 130kg, and I only had 4 days to prepare, but I knocked him out in the second round.

For you, which has been your most memorable fight and why?

Mark Hunt had a stunning walk off KO over competitor Frank Mir last year at UFC Fight Night 85

My most memorable fight would be the fight I am having right now, and that’s the fight to stay in the top end and win the world title.

You’ve been pretty outspoken against steroid use before. What’s your take on the Jon Jones situation?

My take on the Jones situation is that he should be banned for life. He has already been caught for cheating and has ruined any credibility he has as a martial artist. When you hide under the octagon for 6 to 8 hours, hiding from USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency), you are nothing but a coward and a cheat. Everyone who cheats needs to forfeit all their financial gains and be banned from competing as martial artist.  We need to make examples of these cheating pricks…they don’t deserve anything for cheating.

Speaking of illegal drug use, you went toe to toe with Brock Lesnar last year. What was it like getting into the ring with him? Would you ever want to fight him again in the future?

I have shared the ring or octagon with plenty of filthy cheating bums and in the end you realise that it’s an unfair advantage that they have. And you start to get angry because they could kill you, so it’s actually assault what they are doing. Premeditated assault. The hope I have for the future is that the cheaters start getting banned for life before someone dies while competing against one of these juicing bums.

You are set to fight Marcin Tybura at UFC fight night in Sydney. How do you feel about the upcoming match, and are you doing anything differently to train for it?

I feel I should have had the opportunity to fight Fabricio Werdum there, but he is a coward bum. If Tybura isn’t cheating then I’m looking forward to fighting with him, but if he or anyone else I fight fails their drug test after we fight they will be getting their bitch ass sued. I’m tired of these losers and their unfair advantages.

Mark Hunt Interview You and Fabricio Werdum have been having a war of words recently. Is there anything you’d like to comment on about that situation?

There isn’t any war of words with Fabricio. It’s pretty simple: he is a bum and bitched out from the fight I asked that loser to fight in Japan. Either he or someone in his camp said they were not ready at the time, so then I asked him to fight again in Australia, but he said no again. Then decides to go and fight the guys I just beat, saying he didn’t want to hurt me. Bitch, this is the hurt business and your punk ass got lucky last time. He lost my respect because he chose an easier opponent and I hope Lewis beats his chicken ass up.

Are there any other fighters you would like to go up against at some point in the future, after your bout in November?

I would like to fight anyone above me as always. Rematches with JDS, Werdum, Miocic, or Overeem too. I don’t know why they allowed that cheating bitch Overeem a fight in Las Vegas, it pisses me off how they all conspire against my destiny, but I will get that title and throw it at their punk asses.

The Mayweather-McGregor fight is obviously hot news right now. What did you think of that?
Well the fight with Mayweather and McGregor was great and I thought McGregor did fucking amazing.

Thanks for taking the time out to talk to us, Mark, and I am definitely looking forward to your next match!

To see more of Mark Hunt, be sure to tune in to UFC Fight Night on November 19 to watch him take on Marcin Tybura, and for more cool stuff check out our instagram at @slickstermagazine!

Kickass Kickstarter: Eat All The Things

You know what sounds really good right now? A donut. And ice cream. And pizza. Aaaaaaand everything right now. In fact, I think I’m going to just go ahead and EAT ALL THE THINGS! This edition of Kickass Kickstarter may be brought on by my hunger, but don’t discount this donut. Or at least, don’t discount the person in the doughnut.

Eat All The Things: Yummy Gameplay

Eat All the ThingsEat All The Things is one of those games where the concept matches perfectly with the gameplay. You play as Bronut, a ” little guy who loves food so much he’s dressed himself up as a doughnut. His love for food means he just can’t help himself, whether the food belongs to him or not.” So just like anybody whose had a case of the munchies, he’s out for one thing: maximum snackage.

The collect-a-thon genre of platforming has mostly gone by the wayside since the days of the N64 and PlayStation 1. However, with the resurrection of Crash Bandicoot, Yooka-Laylee’s hype, and the possibility of a Spyro HD remaster show the love of the genre has not waned. These kind of games are built for exploration and creativity in approach.

The game also supports local co-op, so that’s an added bonus. I’ve always loved being on the couch with a friend and beating a level toegether. And also messing with my friends and making them die at every opportunity.

Eat All The Things: Scrumptious VisualsEat All the Things

I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for any game that plays on the wacky Japanese show trope. The character Tablet Borgias reminds me so much of the Homer Simpson dish soap mascot. The colors are all bright and pop against the screen. It manages to nail that cutesy anime look without going overboard or being generic.

All of the characters are entertaining and Bronut is hilarious. There’s something about the fact that the guy is on a mission for maximum foodage that I find endearing. He reminds me of Ed from Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy who would go on sleep induced kitchen raids around town. This game could have easily fallen into genericness and been simply passable. But the game oozes personality and is a ton of fun to play. I definitely suggest checking out the game’s demo for yourself as well.

Eat All the ThingsEat All The Things: Wrap Up

This game is just a lot of silly fun. It’s straighforward and doesn’t try to be too much. It’s a ton of fun to play and deserves support. from players and fans of indie games.

Demetrious Johnson vs Ray Borg

Odds: Johnson -649 (1/8), Borg +400 (7/1)

Mighty Mouse.gif

Demetrious Johnson is on the verge of making history, currently tied with Anderson Silva for 10 UFC title defences a win this Saturday will take Johnson clear into a bracket of his own setting a new record.

Johnson’s last defeat came against then Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz. Shortly after the fight, a new smaller weight class was added which provided a much better option for a fighter of Johnson’s stature.

Since the move down to flyweight Johnson has looked unstoppable (barring a draw against Ian Mcall which was avenged). He is currently on a 12 fight win streak, only Jon Jones has a greater active win streak of all the fighters on the UFC roster.

The only criticism thus far has been the lack of top quality opposition which is reflected in the pre-fight odds for Johnson vs Borg, coming in as the +400 underdog something unexpected would have to happen in order for Borg to have any legitimate chance of winning.

Regardless of the question marks surrounding the previous contenders to his title Johnson’s job is to beat the guy in front of him and he’s done that with flying colours so far.

Ray Borg has the opportunity of a lifetime, there’s no pressure on him as the talk leading up to this has been about the title defence record so it’s Johnson who will be under pressure to deliver a memorable performance.

This title shot has come from Johnson having a shortage of contenders rather than Borg doing anything outstanding to earn the fight, Borg hasn’t faced any of the flyweights currently ranked in the top five which makes it hard for anyone to have confidence in him beating the man who many believe is the best fighter on the planet.

TJ Dillashaw offered to take on DJ at flyweight once his planned bout with Cody Garbrandt was scrapped, that fight would have given Johnson the chance to put a credible name on his resume and break the record in style.

Dillishaw brings qualities that on paper should make a potential fight with Demetrious Johnson competitive & that’s what makes a fight entertaining, the competitive aspect.

This fight has been cancelled due to Borg suffering complications making weight, Nunes vs Shechenko will now headline this event.

Amanda Nunes vs Valentina Shevchenko

Odds: Nunes -146 (1/1), Shevchenko +124 (4/5)

After a successful first title defence against the most recognised name in women’s MMA which came in shocking fashion, Nunes now takes on Valentina Shevchenko who is also coming off of impressive performances against Holly Holm and Juliana Pena.

These two met no less than 17 months ago at UFC 196, Nunes winning a decision despite facing some trouble towards the tail end of the fight. The late drama begged the question of whether Shevchenko would stand a better chance of winning in a five round fight and now she’s in a position to find out.

The animosity between these ladies has been increasing ever since the fight was announced, tensions came to a boiling point at the summer kick-off press conference in which Nunes initiated some contact during the face-offs.

Nunes vs Shevchenko face off

This fight was originally scheduled for UFC 213, Nunes, pulled out less than 24 hours from the fight with chronic sinusitis.

We have here a contest between two of the best strikers in the division, which should produce a memorable title fight unlike Nunes’s last few which have been one-sided affairs with early finishes.

Predictions

Amanda Nunes vs Valentina Shevchenko (Nunes)

Neil Magny vs Rafael dos Anjos (dos Anjos)

Ilir Latifi vs Tyson Pedro (Pedro)

Jeremy Stephens vs Gilbert Melendez (Melendez)

Henry Cejudo vs Wilson Reis (Cejudo)

Wind River Review

0

Wind River follows a cast of individuals who are attempting to track down answers in the mysterious death of a young local woman.  The characters felt somewhat molded and cliché, but that isn’t such a bad thing.  You have an stoic Indian Affairs police cheif, a divorced dad (who happens to be a bad ass) and an ‘out-of- her-league’, city girl, FBI agent.  Each has their own view on life, and as the movie lulls you into sort of predicting what each character might say or do, they frequently surprise you in their decision making.

After watching the Academy Award, “Hell or High Water‘, I was expecting… well, a lot.  Wind River didn’t let me down, it just felt slower than I expected.  Not too mention, living up to a near perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes is a steep task for any film or film maker.  Jeremy Renner has quite a few extended dialogue scenes in Wind River.  It almost felt preachy at times.  No doubt, they helped to explain his backstory and gave motivation to actions, but I felt they could have left more up to the audience’s imagination.

What really stands out in Wind River is the lengths the production went to make the violence feel real.  When corpses are found, lifeless in the snow, it looks and feels genuine.  Bullets that strike their intended targets don’t look like cheap blood packs.  Facial scabs on drug users seem so life like and believable, it comes across the screen viscerally.  Fair warning, some of the scenes in this movie are not for the faint.  All of this adds to intimate nature of the picture.

Overall, Wind River is excellent entry into the 2017 catalog.  Similar to Hell or High Water, I was completely unaware on the movie, until I stumbled upon it by random word of mouth.  This is exactly the way I learned of Hell or High Water, and enjoyed both movies. Was it as good as two cowboys robbing banks to save their family farm?  No.  Was the story about a Fish and Wildlife ranger hunting a murdered and redemption for his own loss a damn fine one?  As sure as Wyoming is vast, the answer is a solid yes.

Great Shows to Start to Get into Anime

Japanese animation has always been a niche thing here in the United States. But as it’s grown in popularity, more and more people are hoping on the internet to find out more about the crazy, hilarious, horrifying, and bombastic world of anime. While I’m no expert myself, I do know some good shows/movies to help newbies dip their toes into the world of anime. In no particular order, let the games begin!

Avatar The Last Airbender Anime

Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra

Yes this is cheating by listing two at the same time. Yes there is controversy over whether this counts as anime. I don’t care. Because this show follows a mostly anime style and is an absolute treat to watch. The characters are fantastic, the dialogue is witty and natural. The world is expansive and fleshed out. The themes the stories tell can last with you for a lifetime.

Myazaki Films

Anything Myazaki:

The guy practically invented modern anime and everything attached to his name is a home run. Spirited Away is to this day one of my favorite films of all time and so much fun.

Cowboy Bebop Anime

Cowboy Bebop

Awesome music. Funny characters. Intense action. Cowboy Bebop is a great starter because it’s got a bit of a western feel to it. A lot of anime can be alienating with just how well… Japanese it is. The cultural differences can be a bit off putting for watchers who never saw anything before.

Yu Yu Hakusho Anime

YuYu Hakusho

If you’re interested in fantasy action with tournaments demons and the like, Yu Yu Hakisho is a great place to start as well.  Great action scenes abound and if you’re something a little darker it’s a great place to dip your toes.

Dragon Ball Anime

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z , and Dragon Ball Super

The granddaddy of the last generation of anime Dragon Ball and it’s follow ups are all great fun to watch. The original series is probably the strongest in terms of storytelling but the fights and power levels keep rising like crazy. You really never no what could happen next.

Naruto Anime

Naruto

This anime has two things going for it. An awesome premise (Super powered ninja countries) and really great characters. You’ll want to check what filler you can avoid before starting this, but it’s a great show for any genin. (Newbie)

Little Witch Academia Anime

Little Witch Academia

This is a fun little show that has a great art design. Not everything has to be super dark, gritty, or explosions everywhere. Sometimes you just want to escape into a world of magic and watch a little slice of life television.

One Punch Man

This show is balls to the walls hilarious. One Punch Man’s power is that he can win every fight in exactly one punch. No matter how big or bad the enemy is it doesn’t matter. He’s gonna win and it’ll be awesome.

Fullmetal Alchemist Anime

Fullmetal Alchemist

Another great show that ticks all the boxes and provides great action, characters, and a deep and interesting stories. There are some genuinely heartwrenching and horrifying scenes that will stick with you no matter how much you want to forget it.

Soul Eater Anime

Soul Eater

This is a show that just screams Japan-ification. It’s like Halloween just threw up on the world and everything got either gory, scary, or sexy. Or a combination of any three of them. It’s awesome an a nice way to see how anime can get a little weird at times too.

Jon Jones, Jon Jones steroid test, steroids
Jones and his legions of fans, undoubtably saddened.

In the wake of tuesday’s devastating news, Jon Jones pre UFC 214 test coming back positive for PED’s, we’re all bit taken aback, clenching our collective guts from the sting of an all too familiar blow.

The dark agent in question this time being—Turinabol, an out of production steroid, known more commonly throughout the world of bodybuilding than the realm of professional sport.

With everyone hoping the worst was indeed untrue, UFC president Dana White said of Jones, “It’s unbelievable, brutal. It’s Brutal.”

When questioned as to what would happen with the light-heavyweight title, he reiterated that he would not say anything yet, but the outlook was not optimistic.

If the judgement stands, Jones could be looking at yet another suspension. Possibly up to four years, not withholding punitive fines that may reach well into tens of thousands of dollars.

All this being said, what does his possible withdraw and suspension mean for the the UFC, as the league struggles to retain its dimming star power? With Conor stopped in the tenth by Floyd, and high-level talent the likes of Rory MacDonald, Phil Davis and Matt Mitrione exiting for Bellator, is the UFC in for a tougher year than expected?

As it stands, the under hyped return of Georges St Pierre against current middle-weight champ Michael “The Count” Bisping, is seemingly all one has to look forward to.

Inasmuch as the league would wish to maintain the pace of its current ascension, will we see the development of new faces and personalities, or will the organization rely on the crutch of the familiar? The easily reached speed-dial with its all too recognizable names—anyone seen Rhonda?

Mayweather vs McGregor Preview and Prediction

May vs Mac tale of the tape.jpg

Floyd Mayweather & Conor McGregor have numerous strengths and weaknesses, let’s take a look at the specific skills that are directly applicable in a fight between these two superstars.

Floyd Mayweather’s Strengths

Defence

footwork exiting

defense (footwork)

Mayweather’s defence has been the ever-present foundation of his 49-0 unbeaten run, his fleet footwork makes it difficult to trap him in a stationary position, on the rare occasion Mayweather does get trapped his anticipation and reflexes help to avoid oncoming attacks.

Mayweather also uses his own version of the Philly shell (Mayweather shoulder roll) which once backed up on the ropes he uses to deflect and roll punches thrown in combinations.

Distance Management

Most counter punchers have effective jabs but they use them in a different manner compared to an offensive minded fighter. Offensively the jab is used to create openings, defensively it’s used to maintain the distance between two fighters, discouraging opponents from getting close.

jab high.gif

Floyd changes levels with the jab in an attempt to disguise any patterns in his punch selection, in each of these examples shown above Floyd doesn’t follow-up on the jab, the purpose is to purely keep his opponent from getting near him.

Ring Generalship

There are various opinions on the actual definition of this term, to me, it’s the ability to control the pace and position of the fight.

A Muhammed Ali type fighter who utilized footwork to create angles and avoid danger would favour a slower paced fight in which his opponent is plodding around unable to cut off his movement. A Mike Tyson type fighter who preferred to come forward and land power punches on static targets would ideally like a faster-paced fight with a high volume of punches to make it more difficult for opposition fighters to get away.

Mayweather is a master at controlling the pace of a fight, often forcing opponents into positions or situations in which they are technically inept or uncomfortable whilst retaining positions which he himself is extremely comfortable.

Floyd Mayweather’s weaknesses

Clinching

One tactic Floyd commonly uses to slow down the pace of the fight is to clinch when in close forcing the ref to call a break, once broken up both fighters are reset at a longer distance where once again Floyd is in control.

clinching under pressure.gif

clinching 3.gif

clinching 4.gif

McGregor comes from a Martial Arts background so he’s accustomed to working from the clinch, initiating a clinch would be ineffective against McGregor, in fact, it will give the Irishman a chance to get some free punches off if the referee doesn’t call a break immediately.

Single Punch Offence

Mayweather’s preferred method of attack is with single punches, it means he’s never in one spot for an extended period of time making him more elusive. It also means as long as you’re close enough you can follow-up Floyd’s offence armed with the knowledge it’s coming in single punch format more often than not

Timing

Perhaps more important than either speed or power is the timing of a punch, catching an opponent moving towards the direction of an oncoming shot or landing a punch with maximum extension amplifies the damage on delivery.

Timing.gif

Timing 2.gif

timing 3.gif

timing 4.gif

McGregor’s timing at least in MMA is second to none.

Physical Size & Reach

McGregor will possess the largest reach advantage of any fighter that has previously faced Floyd Mayweather, 74 inches of reach McGregor owns compared to Mayweather’s 72 inches. Along with reach, McGregor in terms of the body structure is a larger man.

By the time both fighters enter the ring the weight difference after rehydration could be anywhere north of 10 pounds in favour of McGregor. The weight limit for the fight is 154lbs after the weigh in expect McGregor to be anywhere near 170bs when the first bell rings.

The weight advantage will aid McGregor in terms of taking damage as a lighter man’s power will be less effective against a heavier guy, the reach advantage means Conor can hit Floyd from a longer distance than Floyds can hit Conor.

You can see here how much farther Conor’s head is from his opponent in comparison to how close McGregor’s hands are to Alvarez’s head.

length 2.gif

Unconventional Style

Each fighter Mayweather has competed against has come from a Boxing background, although every fighter has slight contrasts in style and movement, for the most part, there are no huge differences between Boxers.

Coming from an MMA background McGregor’s style and stance will look nothing like Mayweather has seen before either in the ring or in sparring, Even amongst Mixed Martial Artists McGregor is something of an anomaly. His left hand comes from unusual angles,

the fashion in which he slides in and out of distance is distinctly unique.

Conor McGregor’s Weaknesses

Minimal Use of Right Hand

The fact that McGregor has eight points of attack in MMA means he can get away with sparingly using his right hand, against Mayweather he’s only got two points of attack. Fighters with two good hands have struggled to lay a glove on Floyd, only having one is a huge problem.

Most commonly McGregor uses the right to set up his left.

Anytime I’ve seen him use the jab it looks unconvincing.

limited use of right hand (jab).gif

Most times I’ve seen him use his front hook especially high, he looks off balance.

No Professional Boxing Experience

For those who don’t know McGregor has never had a professional boxing fight, even boxers who have competed for a large majority of their lives often say going 12 rounds for the first time is an experience that’s difficult to prepare for.

You can do 12 rounds of sparring, have a great conditioning regimen in place but there’s no substitute for fighting under the bright lights against an elite level fighter. It has to be practiced live to be understood.

Just to put this into perspective, recently rising prospect Mikey Garcia went 12 rounds for the first time against a top level fighter in Adrien Broner, he was winning the contest by a big margin but slowed down in the last 3 rounds. This is a man who’s been boxing since a young age but yet the 12 round factor still compromised his performance.

Prediction

May vs Mac face off

The early stages of the fight could be interesting because no one including Floyd Mayweather has any idea what McGregor will try to do, this gives McGregor the element of surprise.

Mayweather for as long as I’ve observed his fights is very quick at adjusting to his opponents style, up until he has a good feel for his opponent he takes no risks mitigating the chances of getting caught.

Apart from the potentially difficult early moments, I feel Mayweather will barely get touched, taking on one of the greatest defensive Boxers ever for your first professional contest is a step too far even for the seemingly inhumane Conor McGregor.

The only way McGregor has a legitimate chance of winning is if Floyd has significantly declined during his hiatus, or if he’s severely underestimated Mcgregor and comes into the fight out of shape.

Assuming Floyd is even half the fighter he was when we last saw him in the ring,

Mayweather wins by Unanimous Decision.

Nintendo’s ARMS Will Get You Hurt If You Do Not Study The Game

ARMS is an extension of something from the past, but it is not Punch-out. If you ever play, or played, a game from Taito, Sonic Blast Man, ARMS is a dream come true. As a kid, Sonic Blast Man, made it possible to watch individuals line up, drop quarters in a machine, and throw their strongest punches into a special punch pad, in order to be the hero of the game. You took on thugs, comets, buildings, and monsters to demonstrate your power. It was simple, but the game was fun. In fact, any game that requires a boxing aspect, and requires you to move, in the arcade, was unique and never forgotten.

It does not matter if you use the Joy-Cons, or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, this game requires a strategy, that has a closer connection to Capcom’s Street Fighter series, but adds a super powerful nature to the mix. The Joy-cons operate as left and right gloves, and act as the key to move, slide, and jump in the game. The reality is strategy is the most important aspect of this game. You fight in a ring, on a volleyball, or basketball court, or take on any number of situations. You have powers, but have to know how to use them in the space, and the situations given. For example, take Master Mummy in a one-on-one match. He is large, has a great reach, a healing factor, and carries any number of gloves that disable and pack a punch. He is slower than other fighters are. Master Mummy against a character like Helix, a pliable, quick, and hard to hit creature, can give you problems.

Helix’s level carries a series of DNA chambers. He can slip punches, use the environment, strike you, or toss you unknowingly, then knock you out before you throw the fifth punch. If you understand you have the ability to strike and can utilize an angular punch when necessary, but should make use of a throw in order to take an enemy like Helix, you have better chance in the fight. This is a tactical attitude you can carry into any battle whether it is with a Ribbon Girl, Spring Man, Ninjara, or Kid Cobra. Beware of Kid Cobra. He is just a fast character. The eleven characters designs allow you to enjoy Nintendo’s creative use of characters’ arms and styles. ARMS online is solid as long as everyone’s internet connection holds. Training levels prepare you for most situations you can face in real matches. You compete in Versus, Grand Prix tournament style matches, with final boss, and ranked online or party matches. Multiplayer in this game requires tact. Whether, it is the Pro Controller, or Joy-Cons, versus matches come down to the fighter with the best techniques.

I wish this game had a single player campaign after you complete your ARMS content. Take Master Mummy. You complete all the in-game challenges. They could create a hero, or villain campaign, in the vein of a light adventure. For example, Master Mummy decides he wants to be this villain character. He can go through an ARMS world and help criminals commit crimes, battle heroes who try to stop him, and help create some great evil plan to take over the world. I just would enjoy the arms ability outside of ring. ARMS is a great game to pick up. Just have your strategy ready before every fight, for real.

An Interview with Ohio Natives – Playing to Vapors

0

Playing to Vapors

Playing to Vapors bring a big, ambient, sound that has all the feels. Their new record Shredding the Master Design is filled with skilled songwriting behind a tapestry of sound that is as catchy as it is rock n roll. Slickster recently say down with lead singer Lucas Harris to talk about the new record, the album artwork, and what is next for the band.

Cheers

What was it like coming up in Columbus, OH and how that location influenced your overall sound?

  • Columbus was (and probably still is) an up-and-coming music city when we were getting started. I’ve seen interviews with local celebrities trying to place what the overall ‘sound’ of our city is, and it’s just not possible. It’s a melting pot of a variety of different scenes, and I think allowed Playing to Vapors to not worry about genre or style as much. We were able to try and make something different.

Shred the Master Design is a big and enigmatic record, what was the writing and recording process like for the record?

  • Each song on the record has its own story of how it was written. A few weren’t even finished when we went in to record them. The whole process was an effort to break away from our comfort zones. In the past we’d done everything ourselves, with no deadlines, and unlimited takes/overdubs. The goal was to do something live and filled with energy.

Playing to Vapors

How did you approach this record differently than past recordings?

  • As I said before we recorded most of it live. In addition to that, we went for the vintage tape sound. This record was the first one we did with a producer (Josh Antonuccio). He helped with some of the writing, tones, mic techniques, and did the mixing.

Shred the Master Design is full of ambient sounds with a great use of space, was that conscious during the writing process?

  • Some of it was very conscious, but some of it was off the cuff. “Twin Flame”, “Flash Camera”, “Lydia”, and “Shred The Master Design” (the title track) were all vastly changed during the recording process. This forced us to create whatever textures we wanted pretty much on the spot. Overall, we’re a pretty methodical band. Most of what you hear was a conscious decision.

How did the band approach a common theme and inspiration when writing lyrics for the record?

  • The lyrics for the album are reflective of what I believe the band was going through at the time. Not only as members of Playing to Vapors, but as humans living in Columbus, OH. Our songs are sort of like a snapshot of where we were when we created them. Many are tied by common themes, but I wouldn’t say Shred The Master Design is a full on concept album or anything like that.

I ask several bands this question to gauge reactions. Playing to Vapors is currently independant of a label. Do you find that to be liberating, or are you actively pursuing a label, not that you need to, you are doing just fine without…

  • Haha, I’m glad to hear you say that. We are pursuing a label, but we are fully aware of the horror stories that come with signing a record contract. Any offers we receive, we are very careful to vet. There is no rush for us to obtain label support, but it’s certainly something we’re interested in.

What do you want fans of the band to take away from a Playing to Vapors live experience?

  • For me, the goal of late has been to elicit some kind of emotional reaction. I’m usually up there in my own world with my eyes closed trying to feel the songs, and transfer that feeling to the audience. Lately I’ve been trying to interact more with the audience, and raise the energy of our performance.

Love the artwork for Shred the Master Design how did you come up with the idea?

  • That’s my niece on the cover! The cover came from a video shoot that my brother (R. Stevens Harris) did. He is a filmmaker in Hollywood, and he felt inspired by the Shred The Master Design title track. Since then his ideas have grown exponentially, and last I checked he’s making a full-length feature. Whether or not it is still even remotely related to Shred The Master Design, I am not entirely sure. The cover came from that initial photo shoot though.
  • I want to also point out, that we’re currently in the final stages of making a music video for the title track of the record. My brother is directing it, and it looks incredible. We can’t wait to show it to the world.

Who is “Lydia”, that song is really powerful?

  • Lydia is a person who outgrows you. Whether that means outgrows you emotionally, professionally, etc. The whole song is just the feeling of being stuck, and watching other people (seemingly) succeed all around you. It is one that the band has been kicking around for a while, but was greatly altered during the recording process. The ending of that song was entirely different up until the weekend we tracked it.

Who are your musical heroes that inspired you to want to be full time musicians?

  • We all draw our inspiration from different artists, but some that we all share would be: Radiohead, Incubus, Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, and most recently King Gizzard The Lizard Wizard. I think the one that truly inspires us to live the musician life would be MMJ (My Morning Jacket). Their music tells the traveling musician story so well. Particularly their album It Still Moves.

What’s next for Playing to Vapors?

  • As I said about the music video. We want to utilize the internet more, and try to connect with our audience better. I like the idea of starting a conversation with our fans, and letting people into our lives. We will also be playing more shows regionally, and trying to push our music on a grass-roots level.
