Locker Room politics – Do’s and Don’ts (Mostly don’ts)

2/15/2018 – When temperatures drop many avid athletes seek the comfort of climate controlled gyms and treadmills. That’s no excuse for braving inclement weather to get outdoors. However, with gyms come locker rooms, and with locker rooms come ‘LOCKER ROOM POLITICS’.

We’ve all heard this while were changing into our workout clothes. Two guys, hyped up on post workout endorphins, orally battling about the current headlines from their favorite new source. It usually starts one of two ways. The first way is, someone makes a comment that someone else sees as bigoted or offensive and they casually chime in a separate opinion. Game on! The second way heated discussions get contested is, when two or more people are bantering about a controversial topic recklessly, without concern for others in the room who may be listening. Finally, it motivates another to ‘add his two cents’.

Should I engage in locker room politics?

The short answer is NO. As Dale Carnegie said, “You can’t win an argument.” There are many influential business men and community leaders who share the same space as you while you are lacing your running shoes. Athletes, by their very nature, are sober and cognizant individuals, so what comes out of your mouth may very well be heard and absorbed by a friend of your boss, your girlfriend’s Uncle, etc…. who knows? It could be anyone, and you just planted your flag squarely in an idea that they vehemently oppose. Pro tip: Talk about the weather and you’ll steer clear of about 97% of arguments.

The longer answer is more complicated, but buyer beware. The very act of exercise is to strengthen the body and that extension of physical power can continue directly on into emotional or intellectual strength. Many A-type personalities are in the gym and they welcome a rigorous contest to their beliefs. It gives them a platform to compete with ideas and words instead of fists. If you choose to engage in locker room politics, be prepared to have your beliefs challenged and know who you are speaking with. There is a great risk/reward, but the pay out may be worth it. Adding independent, well informed, and short insightful statements to a political hot button topic in the locker room can get someone to listen to what you have to say. That person could be your next client, boss, or running buddy for a long, long time.

Practical Example

Slickster Magazine is located in Aspen, Co. There is multi-billion dollar real estate and a billion dollar marijuana business (money.cnn.com) hub located here. While there are several private country clubs here, the Aspen Rec Center is still the go-to place for indoor fitness. Word-of-mouth is the best advertising anyone can get. If you run your mouth off within earshot potential of a buyer or seller the long term effects could be dramatic in the small, wealthy, town.

It comes down to respect

Does that mean I need to keep my mouth shut when I’m in the gym and not talk to people? Absolutely not! Should you have a battle of wits with someone who is game, you may win their respect for standing firm in your ideals. You may get crushed if you pick a fight with an intellectual behemoth! Whatever the outcome, if you chose to participate in locker room politics, be respectful. Acknowledge when the other guy has well reasoned point and agree with him whenever possible. You may not win an argument, but you might win some friends and influence people.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is the Arcade Brawler Fix You Need (Updated)

Square Enix’s Brawler Crossover

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is the third title of the Final Fantasy crossover brawler series, Dissidia. Much like its predecessors, there’s a lot of frenetic action, favorite characters, and fan-service galore. But now there’s been added a 3-vs-3 component that leads to even more hectic, but visually-astounding battles than ever before. The team-building opportunities are incredible and fun as players get to make their own dream teams. Compared to the previous installments, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT also has the trappings of what could be Square Enix’s entry into the world of competitive console e-sports. Consider this article a piece in progress as I continue to experience the extensive roster and attempt to get my multiplayer gaming on!

Everyone’s Favorite Maniacal Clown is Back!

Gameplay and Mechanics

Like previous Dissidia titles, it’s a battle of Final Fantasy characters as they’ve been torn out of their worlds and thrown into the interdimensional arena together. But unlike its predecessors, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT has that new 3-vs-3 component, and that’s where this title takes all of its past lessons and amps it up. It’s one thing when you’re just taking on one enemy character. But when you’ve got three enemies and two allies, a new level of strategy as well as action gets introduced, and suddenly what could’ve felt same-old suddenly becomes fresh and exciting. Overwhelming sometimes, but in a good way!

There are several game modes in which to play. In Story Mode, you play as the side of Light as both good and evil characters have been pulled into a whole different world populated by copies of their own Final Fantasy universes. Other offline gameplay modes include Standard 3-vs-3 matchups and a Core mode where you have to destroy the other team’s crystal core before yours gets destroyed.

All favorite characters come with unique move animations. From move sets to special EX skills like Poisonga and Slowga (familiar names to Final Fantasy fans, of course), players craft their own style and strategies around these memorable characters. The summons they’ve included in the game are your classics ranging from Ifrit to Shiva to the big ol’ Bahamut himself.

In both the story and in unlocking stuff through the Standard mode, I’m having quite a blast! It’s incredibly hectic. Admittedly, it takes a few battles to get used to the 3-vs-3 battles. But once you get used to it, the battles feel quite alive compared to just having it be a 1-on-1 match up. Between the old Dissidia titles and this one, I’m sold on this one.

My All-Star Line Up

Multiplayer

For anyone that has been able to experience the multiplayer, I urge you to please drop a comment and let us know how it is! Despite my efforts to get into a multiplayer match, I’ve repeatedly found myself waiting forever. And still no matches. While I don’t want to say the multiplayer is dead on arrival, I’m currently trying to get my first match still.

DLC (Updated)

The first of the Season Pass’s six characters has been revealed to be Final Fantasy XII’s Vayne, coming out this April 2018! However, there’s going to be quite the wait if you’re waiting for all six characters. The last character is not to be released until February of 2019. Stay tuned for more characters!

Entanglement Review: How to Feel Blue and Get Some Too

0

Ben Layton (Thomas Middleditch, Silicon Valley) still hasn’t gotten over the break-up with his ex-girlfriend. The emptiness becomes too great for Ben to handle and he tries to commit suicide, several times, but fails to complete the process. Feeling even worse after the entire ordeal, Ben finds a sense of purpose when he discovers that he almost had an adopted sister as a child. He tracks her down, a woman named Hanna (Jess Weixler, Teeth), and falls in love with her, which only makes his lonesome existence more complicated and screwed up than it already was.

Written by Jason Filiatrault (A Christmas Horror Story) and directed by Jason James, Entanglement is a romantic dark comedy that was initially promising because the trailer seemed to hint at a low budget film aiming to have an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind kind of atmosphere to it. The film capitalizes on the type of awkward humor you’d find in the work of Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos), but is R-rated and more adult oriented. Entanglement begins with a slow crawl following the duct taped garden hose that runs from Ben’s running car to his apartment window. As Ben narrates his suicide note, someone steals his car before he can finish the job and all of his suicide attempts come up short in similar ways; closet fixture collapses before he can hang himself, throws a toaster in the bathtub before he gets into it, and the doorbell buzzes after he slits his wrists and gets in the bathtub.

Jess Weixler and Thomas Middleditch in, “Entanglement.”

Entanglement becomes a wild goose chase for Ben as he scrambles to discover what life choice or choices catapulted him into the lifetime of suck he now occupies. Hanna is originally a ray of hope for Ben even before he falls in love with her. Ben is crippled by his depression and consistently doubts every decision that he makes. In a way, Entanglement is Ben’s last ditch effort to find something that will make him happy. The easy way out is showing Ben that he has more to accomplish in this plane of reality, but it all seems hopeless until he meets Hanna.

It’s not difficult to predict where Entanglement is going. The film makes an effort to show the audience that Ben isn’t thinking clearly and is emotionally overcome with unhealthy thoughts and feelings. There’s the animated deer Ben and Hanna encounter in the forest, the jellyfish that swim around them at the indoor pool they break into overnight, the arguments he has with his own reflection, and the hand puppet at his psychiatrist’s office that only seems to taunt him. The resolve is foreseeable, but Entanglement has this believable execution that makes it all worthwhile. Ben’s journey is clumsy and murky as if his head is being held underwater for nearly the entire film, but he eventually learns to swim with his head above those muddy waters.

Ben (Thomas Middlditch) swims with jellyfish in, “Entanglement.”

Hanna seems to awaken this rebellious side of Ben no one has seen before. She pushes him to take risks and come out of his shell to accomplish extraordinary things he wouldn’t normally do. Hanna wants Ben to know that his broken heart is still beating and that feeling something other than numb sadness is the most exhilarating sensation in the world. His next door neighbor Tabby (Diana Bang, The Interview) seems to be the one attempting to keep Ben’s life organized as he struggles to find meaning. She’s the voice of reason, logical, and tells things like it is without sugar coating them. In a way, Hanna is the devil on Ben’s shoulder encouraging him to break the rules and get into mischief while Tabby is the angel on his opposing shoulder advising him that everything he’s ever wanted has been right under his nose the entire time.

Entanglement explores depression in a way that is genuine and satisfying. The film dives into Ben’s psyche that is both believable and relatable if you’ve ever experienced the mental and emotional state for a long period of time. Depression clouds your judgement and cripples you from doing the things you love. Entanglement gives the message that fixing yourself isn’t always found in the company of another person, but is sometimes buried within the forgotten depths of our souls. Funny at times and debilitating at others, Entanglement shines a spotlight on how vulnerable we can be as we swim through the lugubrious waters of a permanent estrangement and proves that no matter how weak and hopeless we feel our lives are often much more enjoyable than we care to admit.

Entanglement is now playing in select theaters and is available On Demand/Digital HD.

Girl of the Week Emily Pemberton

Arizona co-ed lights up everyone around with a smile, great body and fun loving personality. She loves wearing bikinis and isn’t afraid to show some booty. We asked her a few questions and she was more than willing to answer. Here’s to the girl of the week, EmPemb.

2/11/2018, 3:05 p.m.

Slickster: Em, there isn’t much witten about you online. What can you tell us about yourself?
EmPemb: My full name is Emily Pemberton but I go by Em or Lil Em. I was born and raised in Southern California. I spent most of my time at the beach. I moved to Arizona for college (Go wildcats!). I am now back in California and pursuing my dream job.

Slickster: Ok, it’s clear from your IG and Twitter feed that you are passionate about animals, right?
EmPemb: Yes, very passionate. When I was younger I loved learning about animals. I memorized every breed of dog and I wanted to build a sanctuary for the white bengal tigers (maybe one day). As of right now, I recently rescued a golden retriever named Nacho and he is the light of my life.
Slickster: What are your professional goals for modeling?
EmPemb: I recently learned the hard way that most agencies will not take a model that is under 5’6. I am barely 5’3 (lil em). I want to show the industry that you don’t have to be tall to model.
Slickster: How can I impress the girl in my class?
EmPemb: How can you impress a girl in your class? By answering questions and participating. Being smart is attractive!
Slickster: What’s the best way to talk to girls on Facebook?
EmPemb: What’s the best way to talk to a girl on FB? go for it- message her. Don’t start off with a corny ‘ice breaker’ because most don’t break the ice. Keep it simple. If the conversation easily flows ask for her number. If it doesn’t or you don’t get a response – oh well, you are back in the same spot. You don’t lose anything by trying.

UFC 221: Romero vs Rockhold Preview & Main Card Predictions

0

Main Event: Yoel Romero vs Luke Rockhold (UFC Interim Middleweight Title)

In the highly competitive UFC middleweight division, Yoel Romero & Luke Rockhold have hovered around the top spots in the rankings for several years without actually crossing paths, at UFC 221 they finally face off and attempt to add some much-needed stability in the turbulent middleweight division.

In June 2016 the shocking ending to Luke Rockhold’s reign as champion was the action that would unintentionally send the middleweight into disarray.

Rockhold finish.gif

Micheal Bisping who took the fight on short notice (17 days) replacing an injured Chris Weidman went on to successfully defend against Dan Henderson who was a relevant opponent for Bisping at the time but nowhere near the top of the rankings. Bisping then lost the title to a returning George St-Pierre, soon after St-Pierre decided to vacate citing health issues as a reason for not being able to defend the title.

Earlier in 2017, Yoel Romero had fought Robert Whittaker for an Interim Middleweight belt which meant after St-Pierre vacated, Robert Whittaker who defeated Romero for the Interim belt was promoted to the undisputed champion of the weight class.

During the period Bisping participated in fights which didn’t correlate directly to the rankings the other middleweights have been held up, originally Robert Whittaker was pencilled in to defend the undisputed title against Rockhold but an injury resulted in Romero taking his place and the fight will now be for another Interim Championship.

The winner in Perth, Australia will naturally become the number one contender. Moving forward there should be a clearer picture for the rest of the middleweights once order has been restored when the victor of Romero vs Rockhold gets matched up with a healthy Robert Whittaker sometime in 2018.

Yoel Romero

Romero is the most athletic fighter I’ve ever seen, even now at 40 years of age he looks like a superhero from another planet,

Romero specimen.gif

outside of looking like a superhero, Romero has the ability to move his body with such speed and explosion it seems as if he’s in another timezone to his opponents.

His only loss in the UFC was a close decision a year ago against Robert Whittaker, prior to that Romero was riding an 8 fight win streak which included some impressive finishes.

Romero flying knee.gif

Romero Gnp Machida.gif

Romero knee on Weidman.gif

Romero is for me the most dangerous fighter in the weight division because of his ability to end fights abruptly in various different scenarios. His weakness has been shown to be endurance, with all that gifted ability to explode quickly comes a cost of energy management.

Although he can hurt fighters with any technique he chooses Romero has to be careful not to expend too much of his energy at once especially in a fight scheduled to go five rounds.

Luke Rockhold

it’s Safe to say Rockhold is one of the more talented fighters in the world of MMA, an opportunistic fighter who’s been competing at a high level for years. Rockhold is a former UFC & Strikeforce Middleweight Champion who has numerous wins over world class middleweights with the added advantage of only being 33 years old, 7 years younger than Yoel Romero.

Romero is facing in Luke Rockhold a well-rounded fighter with a slick grappling game & an arsenal of fluid kicking techniques.

Body kick on Costa.gif

Sub on Bisping.gif

Kick on Bisping.gif

As Chris Weidman found out Rockhold’s also extremely heavy with his pressure from the top, ground and pound seem’s to be an extinct art in modern MMA but Rockhold is as good at delivering damage from top position as anyone in the world. Something all the fighters from AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) seem to thrive at.

Rockhold GnP onslought.gif

The biggest flaw in Rockhold’s game is his concentration, every one of his three losses (two in the UFC) have come by TKO.

Losing by TKO in itself against top competition isn’t unusual, the manner in which the Belfort & Bisping finishes came, however, are indicative of Rockhold becoming too comfortable and switching off, giving his opponents vital opportunities to finish fights.

Confidence is therefore both a strength and weakness for Rockhold, against Romero he can’t afford to give anything away, the slightest mistake could be fatal.

Predictions

Yoel Romero vs Luke Rockhold (Romero)

Mark Hunt vs Curtis Blaydes (Blaydes)

Tai Tuivasa vs Cyril Asker (Tuivasa)

Jake Matthews vs Li Jingliang (Jingliang)

Tyson Pedro vs Saparbek Safarov (Pedro)

Daily Fantasy Sports: The Skinny on Cash Games for a Fat Profit Margin

Daily Fantasy Sports: The Skinny on Cash Games for a Fat Profit Margin

What is a cash game?

January 29, 2018 – Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) comes at you with a lot of different contests to play. It’s human nature to look at the contests with the highest payout and want to take a shot. Don’t fall for this common mistake as it’s a great way to set yourself up for losing.

Cash games are an avenue to build your bankroll while keeping the odds of winning as close to your favor as possible. The concept of a cash game is straightforward, play a $1 and win a $1.80, or $2.00, if you finish in the top half of the field. I will explain the .20 cent difference above in a minute. I will review the types of cash games with you and then go over line-up strategies for a successful investment. Cash games play very different from the big money tournaments and are much easier to consistently make a profit. Let’s discuss the first type of cash game, the 50/50.

50/50 Contests

The 50/50 is a staple contest to play whether you are new to DFS or a seasoned player. The premise is very simple and straightforward. A $1.00 entry into a 50/50 with 100 entrants requires you finish in the top 50 to win a $1.80. Now wait a minute, if it’s a 50/50 why in the blue hell am I not taking home $2.00? This will explain the .20 cent difference I referenced above. The reason is the site you play on takes a rake of the total pot. A rake is a commission for the host site to make money for their services, in this case DFS contests.

Daily Fantasy Sports Cash Games

Now let’s re-visit these high payout contests you (ok maybe by you I mean me) wanted to jump into at the start. These contests usually have in the high thousands of entries with only the top 10-20% of the players winning any money. For instance, FanDuel is running a contest with 68,027 entries tonight. It costs $7.77 to enter and first place takes home $100,000. Life changing money for sure, but so is the lottery. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to take a shot at these occasionally, but you must crawl before you can walk. In this contest, you must place in the top 13,815 to win money or in the top 20%. If you finish 13,815, you basically double your entry fee and win $14.00 after rake. Now compare this to the 50/50 contest and you can see why playing more cash games leads to long-term DFS success.

50/50 contests come in all shapes and sizes. You can enter $1, $2, $5, $10, and $25 dollar contests all the way up to thousands of dollars if you have that kind of expendable income. In the beginning, I found entering multiple $1 and $2 contests worked well for me. For the most part, you get beginner or novice DFS players who, maybe like you, are trying to find their way. Sure, there are sharks that swim in the water and try to prey on new and inexperienced players, but remember you only have to finish in the top 50% to cash. In these low dollar contests, the scores you need to make money are generally lower as well. For instance, if you score a 300 you could very well cash in a 50/50. However, that 300 score probably wouldn’t make the 10-20% finish you would need to cash in larger contests.

Let’s move on to the next type of cash game, Head to Heads.

Head to Head (H2H) Contests

Head to heads are exactly as the name suggest, me versus you winner take all minus the rake. Depending on the player you talk to, some players loath H2H’s while others participate in these contests every night. Personally, I enjoy these contests. There is less room for error in H2H’s versus cash games, which is why I think many players stay away. What I mean by less room for error involves one of your players having a horrendous night. In a higher entry contest, chances are others will have the same player and you still have a chance of finishing in the top 50% and cashing. In a H2H, if one of your players has a bad night and your opponent doesn’t have that player, you are at a great disadvantage. Sure there is a chance that one of your opponent’s players will have a bad night well, but generally H2H’s are less forgiving than 50/50’s.

H2H’s can be played for as little as $1 all the way up to $10,600. As with cash games, it is wise to start low. When I started, I went on quite a winning streak in H2H’s and built my bankroll up to $100 bucks or so. But it took so damn long to do, and I thought I had this DFS thing figured out, so I entered all the money I had into a H2H contest. I got smoked and what took me two weeks to build was gone in a fraction of that time. I had built my bankroll on $1, $2, and the occasional $5 contest. I certainly didn’t win everyone, but I won enough to make a steady profit. Instead of betting it all, I should have played a $10 or $20 H2H. That way if I lost, it wouldn’t hurt as much, and I could start the building of my bankroll again at a much higher money level than $0.

The next type of contest is considered by some to be a cash game, while others differ on that opinion. Myself, I consider it to be a cash game. So, let’s delve into the Double Up.

Double Up

The double up plays very similar to a cash game except you actually double your money if you win. A $2 entry gets you $4. How this happens is why some people do not consider double ups cash games. Let’s look at a $2 double up with 56 players. Instead of the top 28 players cashing, only the top 25 cash. The site takes the rake from the extra entries which allows for the “double your entry fee” payout. As you can see, the double up offers less chance to cash and is a tad riskier, but I still feel they are a safe way to play to build your bankroll if you are aware of how they differ from 50/50’s.

Over time, playing only double ups and no cash games can be problematic. Once I got the hang of cash games, I started mixing in double ups and had some success. Then I got greedy and played just double ups. My bankroll suffered as my percentage of losing increased exponentially as I pulled all my entries from 50% cashing contests to 44% cashing contests. It’s important to stick to the cash games and sprinkle a few double ups in when your comfortable.

So now you know about some different cash games. But I can’t let you simply throw line-ups into these contests without giving you some information on how to build them. Onward, to victory we ride!

Cash Game Line-Up Building Strategy

Cash Game Strategy Shark

With a fighter’s chance of winning money in cash games, naturally you should limit your risk when building lineups. A boring, vanilla line-up works wonders in cash games. Think of it as sex with a condom. Sure, it’s not the most exciting, upside down, and mind-blowing experience you will ever have, but it get’s the job done.

Playing cash games doesn’t require you to score the most points. There is no need to take a chance on a guy that is a “boom or bust” player. You need to find the players that consistently give you a solid number of points, rebounds, assists, blocks, or steals. It would be nice to load up on all the high dollar players to accomplish this, but your salary cap prohibits that. There are always value players on each slate to play that allow you to get a superstar or two in your lineup. Keep in mind, value opens each day with injury announcements. If a mid to high dollar priced players is out, the back-up is generally low priced and will see an increased number of minutes. This is considered a safe play and, for the most part, should be considered for your cash games.

Reliable, high floor, players will lead to positive cash game results over time. There will be times that a player has a great match-up on paper, but has a horrendous game for one reason or the other. It’s important to look back at these situations and review why you made the decision to play the player. If it made sense, stick with your thinking. As you play you will develop strategies and certain ways you research slates. Sometimes, as in life, the right decision leads to bad results. These bad results don’t always make the decision you made wrong. Stick with your process and grow each day. As a DFS player you will evolve as the night’s slate dictates, but your core research habits and instincts need to stay in place. When I first started playing DFS, I listened to so many shows and read tons of articles. Thinking back, I had a different strategy every night and my results were not good. It was when I built a core of research habits, found a podcast similar to my thinking, and joined a group of like minded players that I began to improve as a DFS player.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article and I hope your DFS journey is helped by my experiences.

Next time I will dig into bankroll management. I have referenced it many times in my previous articles and at it’s core it is rather straightforward. With DFS however, there are many traps that I want to help you avoid. It is, after all, a form of gambling and the sites main focus is to generate a profit. Stay safe and see you next time.

Stipe Miocic vs Daniel Cormier: Papering Over the Cracks

Stipe Miocic vs Daniel Cormier

Heavyweight super bout set for UFC 226

The timing of this recently confirmed fight is perfect, both champions coming off impressive wins on the same card at UFC 220 with their stock on the rise. Facing young, hungry challengers in their athletic primes the two men managed to neutralise the danger retaining their belts and solidifying their status as UFC champions.

From a stylistic point of view, this an intriguing fight, Stipe Miocic who usually weighs in around 230lbs is a smaller heavyweight which makes Cormier’s move up less risky because he’ll be weighing in similar to Miocic which cancels out any potential weight disadvantages. Cormier is, of course, a former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion so no stranger to fighting bigger guys.

Daniel Cormier & Cain Velasquez both train out of the American Kickboxing Academy which provided Cormier with a dilemma once he moved over to the UFC from Strikeforce as the heavyweight champion, the eventual outcome was a drop down to 205lbs where Cormier has remained since 2014. The decision was made due to the fact that Velasquez and Cormier were reluctant to fight one another so to avoid a potential situation where they had no choice but to fight each other Cormier removed himself from the equation.

Since Cormier made that decision he’s claimed & defended (multiple times) the light heavyweight belt. Cain Velasquez however, has been inactive and out of the heavyweight title picture completely. The question of whether or not Cormier could beat the current heavyweight champion has been raised on many occasions, Cormier will try to provide an answer to the question whilst also attempting to make history by becoming only the fifth man to hold a UFC Championship in two separate divisions.

Stipe Miocic out to prove once and for all, he is the baddest

On the other side of the coin, Stipe Miocic who felt underappreciated and disrespected in the lead up to his fight with Francis Ngannou gets a big opportunity to put an accomplished champion and one of the all-time greats in Daniel Cormier on his record. After becoming the most successful heavyweight champion in UFC history by defending his belt for an unprecedented third time the stage is set for Miocic to cement his name unquestionably as the greatest heavyweight of all time.

Here comes the but, the reason why this fight is happening isn’t down to Stipe Miocic & Daniel Cormier possibly breaking PPV records it’s because there’s a serious lack of fresh talent from 205lbs all the way up to 265lbs covering the span of two entire weight divisions.

The light heavyweight class was once the most talent packed in all of MMA, it’s now become stale with the same faces who have either all beaten each other or been on the losing side of title fights. The heavyweight division has always been thin and you can attribute that to the scarcity of large men as a percentage of the total male population.

Whichever division the loser ends up at will be in a further weakened state. If Cormier loses he’s still the 205lb champion but coming off a loss with the only fight making any sense being Cormier vs Gustafsson. In that scenario, you’ve got a champion who’s 1-1 with 1 no contest in his last three fights against an Alexander Gustafsson who’s done nothing significant since losing to Cormier over two years ago, tough sell.

If Stipe Miocic loses & Cormier becomes heavyweight champion, the downside is Cormier has declared March 20th of 2019 will be the date of his retirement. In that timeframe, Cormier defends his title once max possibly never if he decides to drop back to 205lbs immediately. Should Cormier return to light heavyweight, the heavyweight division now has a vacant belt.

For the short term, this contest provides us with some fresh intrigue maybe even serves as a distraction, but in the long-term, with the lighter divisions thriving now more than ever the future of the two heaviest UFC weight divisions looks critical.

Double Dragon Finally, Really, Comes to Nintendo Switch

by Rob DiCanterino Flickr

It Is About Time

Nintendo Entertainment System, from 1985, has a version of Double Dragon. The Midi music in the game is fine. Double Dragon’s game play is effective. The NES cartridge was my first experience with a translation of an arcade title. This kind of experience was rare for the time. Arcades were a popular thing in the 1980s. Arcade translations, done well, on home video game consoles were far, and few, in between. Nintendo Entertainment System’s Double Dragon, from Tradewest and Nintendo, is a perfect example of this kind of experience. The spirit of Nintendo’s game mimics the arcade. However, the sprites in the game fail in comparison to the arcade counterpart. The lack of a two-player game is also a sad omission. The NES title is not the arcade version, but has its bright spots. Nintendo Switch got it exactly right, well almost.

Arcade Exact

by Evan Amos Wikimedia Commons

Arcade Archives: Double Dragon, from Hamster, Co., follows Billy and Jimmy Lee. The Nintendo Switch eShop game mimics the Technos of Japan game, from 1987. The two go on a quest to save Billy’s girlfriend, Marian, from the forces of the Shadow Warriors, or evil. You play as Billy Lee. The player uses kicks, punches, an elbow, and jumping attacks to take down various enemies. Players can reorganize their buttons to control their character in the best way. The two-player game uses combinations of two Pro Controllers, Joy cons, or some combination for the perfect way to play. The game offers a Caravan mode. It is a speedier, timed, version of the game players can complete. A Hi-Score mode allows players to beat the high score the game offers at the top of your screen.

What is This?

What is the big issue in this game? This game slows down with multiple characters on screen. Two players on screen are fine. However, more means a slight drag in the game play. Players can still kick butt. They just look high while doing it. This is very noticeable when you play the game on television. However, portable play, while it stutters, offers a more natural game to players.

Conclusion

At eight bucks, this game is necessary, in my opinion. It is a solid portable version of the exact copy of the arcade game. The game, on a television, is just as good. It just might be better to play it in the Hi- Score, or Caravan versions of the game. It is so hard to explain what a game like this means. On an arcade machine, this game would eat many quarters. It would take up so much time. This game is the arcade version, you hit a button to add lives to your characters, and finish the game, through all the nonsense the game offers, period. This must be love? Happy Valentine’s all.

Francis Ngannou Suffocated Under the Weight of Expectation

0

Much was made about the push Francis Ngannou was being given in the lead up to UFC 220, countless videos and statistics were released to get Ngannou across to as large an audience as possible meanwhile the defending champion was treated like the b side in this fight.

Stipe Miocic was also upset at the clear bias in terms of promotion the challenger had received snatching the belt away from Dana White immediately following the fight to instead let his cornerman wrap the belt around his waist, a custom usually performed by Dana White.

The ideal scenario for the UFC it seemed was for Ngannou to win and the UFC crown a fresh marketable champion in their heavyweight division. Unfortunately, video promo’s don’t bear any significance in the outcome of a fight and at UFC 220 an old adage “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry” came to mind.

Stipe Miocic was victorious setting a new record for defences of the heavyweight title, Miocic had many factors going against him, weight disadvantage, age, athleticism, the only area he was at an advantage was possessing greater MMA experience, he used that experience so well it was ultimately the deciding factor of the fight.

Something dawned on me right around the end of the third round by which point Ngannou was so heavily fatigued it was a question of how Miocic would win and not if, having witnessed the viral reaction Ngannou created with the unforgettable knockout of Alistair Overeem, did Ngannou feel as if he needed to win this fight in similar fashion?.

Thinking about all of Ngannou’s previous appearances in the UFC he has always been patient and composed, something that gave me great faith in him before his uncharacteristically erratic display in the first round of the fight. During the post-fight interview, Ngannou expressed how he “underestimated” Stipe Miocic and in the post-fight press conference admitted “I go (went) too hard in the first round” citing that as the main reason he was defeated.

Had Ngannou won, the UFC’s push would have looked like a genius move. There are two sides of the coin, however, in this particular case, I’m talking about the added pressure that is placed on an athlete who is expected to deliver something spectacular. The UFC was aiming to make a heavyweight star akin to those Boxing has produced the past few years, in doing so they may have pulled the trigger too early potentially spoiling the momentum Ngannou had been gathering.

There is still time for Ngannou, he’s only 31 in a division which is full of fighters much older than him although the opportunity to market Ngannou as a Mike Tyson type destroyer who captures the imagination of the general public has now gone out the window for good.

Overall the fight was slightly disappointing, Ngannou was naive, Stipe coasted, as always a few questions were answered but the biggest question still remains a mystery, how long until the UFC produces a globally marketable heavyweight champion reflective of the title “the baddest man on the planet”?.

5 HELLA aggravating things people do at gyms

5 HELLA aggravating things people do at gyms

We are three weeks into New Years Resolutions. Already, the overcrowding that was commonplace during the last twenty-one days is seeing noticeable decline. People have good intentions of losing weight or shaping up for summer, but lack the discipline to see it through. It’s easier to hit snooze on your bedside alarm clock than it is to hit the weights. As always during this time of year, gym rats and regulars see the doofus behavior of the here-today-gone-tomorrow crowd. Here are five aggravating things we noticed during the past three weeks in the gym.

Guys taking their shirts off in the cardio room

We know it’s hot and you’re going to sweat. That’s the whole fucking point. No one wants to see your middle-age ‘used to play third base’, desk jockey gut. Put your pasty white belly and flabby arms away. And so what? You’re ripped like The Wolverine. Big deal! That still doesn’t give you a pass to be a duchebag. You’re just the….

Attention whore

There’s no mistaking when she walks into the room, because heads start turning. Some women come to the gym dressed more like strippers than someone who is about to exercise, then get offended when guys stare at them. There’s nothing wrong with a fit woman rocking tight spandex and wearing a game face. We’re all there to workout after all. But there are a few attention whores who spend more time working on their make-up in front of the mirror than working on their form.

Gym Attention Whore

Talking on your cell phone

This might be the #1 thing that we have seen over that past three weeks. Never mind the signs plastered over every wall reminding people that CELL PHONES ARE NOT ALLOWED while working out, dumb asses just keep them glued to their ears. Maybe it’s a just a sign of the times, and how addicted we are as a culture to drip-dopamine inducing cell phones, but just SHUT THE FUCK UP for 45 mins while you half-ass your time on a recumbent bicycle.

Wearing nothing but speedos to talk to the front desk

Yeah, so this next aggravating thing people do at gyms actually happened. Many gyms are family friendly now, and there are kids in day care rooms while mom and dad work out. The other day a middle age dude, who hadn’t seen the sun in about 12 years or bothered to work on his fitness, strolls out to the front desk in blue speedos. I have no idea what he was talking about but it went on, and on, on…. Standing at the front desk in your banana hammock isn’t appropriate. Wrap a towel around your waste (waist) for fuck’s sake.

Horrible personal hygiene

Working out means sweat. Sweat mean body odor. Any guy who grew up lifting weights for school sports can tell you, there is a distinct smell to a weight room. But don’t cross the line. If your gym clothes smell like Lindsay Lohan’s pussy after getting gang-banged by a team of donkeys, have some fucking self respect and wash your clothes. Brush your teeth before you start spewing garlic breath over the entire room, and wipe down the bench when you are done with it.

Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay Does Not Bring April Showers

presented by Warner Brother Home Entertainment

In Living Color

Gavin O’ Connor plans to direct the next, live-action, Suicide Squad film in 2019. Rumors highlight this film as Ben Affleck’s final appearance as Batman. O’ Connor and Affleck worked together in the movie, The Accountant. It is news like this that makes you wish Affleck would stick around just enough to appear in a few more Detective Comics’ films, in minor roles, and maybe two other major appearances, before he exits the cape and cowl. The hope is this is in the Detective Comics’ Flashpoint movie. His appearance in the first Suicide Squad film was excellent. Everyone knows there could have been more to that live-action film. However, Suicide Squad, in animation, has been solid. They will another appearance in the R-rated movie, Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay.

Batman and the Gang

Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay
presented by Warner Brothers Home Entertainment and Movie Web

I only got a small glimpse of the Suicide Squad, in Batman: Assault on Arkham. It was good to see how they operated as a squad. They gave Batman problems. They gave everyone problems in that movie. Their appearance was fun, serious, and intense at times. Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay looks to put this crew front, and center. They get to show how important they are and just what they can really do. Please, read below.

The Deadly Story

“Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay finds Amanda Waller’s top secret “Task Force X” – Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn and Copperhead – on a mission to retrieve a mystical object so powerful that they’re willing to risk their own lives to steal it. But the Suicide Squad isn’t the only group of villains seeking to possess the object. The race is on for the golden prize … and, to stay alive, second place isn’t an option.

Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay will release April 10, 2018.

The all-star cast is led by Christian Slater (Mr. Robot, Archer, True Romance) in his DC Universe Movies debut as the voice of Deadshot, who heads “Task Force X” alongside Billy Brown (How To Get Away With Murder) as Bronze Tiger, Liam McIntyre (Spartacus: War of the Damned, The Flash) as Captain Boomerang, Kristin Bauer van Straten (True Blood, Once Upon a Time) as Killer Frost, Gideon Emery (Teen Wolf) as Copperhead, Tara Strong (Batman: The Killing Joke) as Harley Quinn and their “boss,” Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) as Amanda Waller. Villainous forces in the film include C. Thomas Howell (Outcast, The Outsiders, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox) as Zoom, Dania Ramirez (Devious Maids, Heroes, Once Upon a Time) as Scandal Savage, James Urbaniak (Difficult People, The Venture Bros.) as Professor Pyg, Julie Nathanson (The Zeta Project, Beverly Hills 90210) as Silver Banshee and Jewelee, and Jim Pirri (Injustice 2) as Vandal Savage & Vertigo.

Other Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay voice cast members include Greg Grunberg (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Heroes) as Steel Maxum, Dave Fennoy (Batman: Arkham Knight, Batman: The Telltale Series) as Blockbuster & Tobias Whale, Cissy Jones (Firewatch) as Knockout, Natalie Lander (The Middle, Justice League Action) as Darma, Trevor Devall (Johnny Test) as Punch, Dave Boat (Family Guy, The Good Dinosaur) as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, and Matthew Mercer (Critical Role, Batman: Bad Blood) as Savage Gunman.
