Synthwave – Microchip Terror and sex with robots

Microchip Terror

Synthwave music continues to develop and gain followers and creators alike.  Inspired by the music, art and culture of of the 70’s and 80’s, the once underground music is becoming mainstream.  As implied in the name, it is heavily driven by synthesizers, although some musicians, like Red Soda or Will Rock, also rely guitars or saxophones to add a more “acoustic” touch to the music.  While the gerne certainly has some well defined idioms, as of 2018 it is still largely a white canvas for artists to delve into the deepest corners of their imagination.

In referring to Singapore based synthwave musician, Microchip Terror [MT], that last sentence needs to include, “deepest and DARKEST corners” of the mind. His newest dark synth album, Illegal Expiriments, is a journey into madness, while still remaining listenable.  Mad scientists and Human Centipedes are source inspiration for this album.

Check out Illegal Experiments below and read about sex with robots, time travel, the red light district of Singapore and a whole more!

Slickster: Illegal Experiments is the title of your newest synthwave album.  That conjures up some pretty extreme connotations from the science fiction to just plain gross stuff.  Of course, my mind instantly jumps to an cheesy 80’s zombie flick, or some type of Japanese sex-with-robots porn. What does the term Illegal Experiments mean to you?

MT: Conceptually, the term developed from my obsession with Re-animator and other “crazy doctor experimenting on humans” films – and since you mentioned Japanese sex with robots, I’m gonna recommend the underrated Japanese cyberpunk cult classic “964 Pinocchio” about an android sex slave abandoned by his owners leaving him to roam on the streets of Tokyo and everything goes downhill from there, expect lots of vomiting, mutation, screaming and bizarre Japanese cinema madness. Hope you guys dig it 😉

Musically, I guess it’s about breaking rules and doing things that are maybe “Illegal” in synthwave. My music is probably frowned upon by lots of synthwave purists, but I think it’s more fun to make stuff that are a little different and weird these days.

Slickster: Recently, Vinnie Paul Abbot of the famous metal band Pantera died.  He, and his late brother “Dimebag” Darrel Abbot, were legends in the heavy metal community.  We noticed on your Instagram page, that you posted a a vintage photo of them from the early 80’s.  Can you tell us your favorite Pantera album, and discuss their impact on your musical development?

MT: Pantera is easily one of my all time favourites that has a huge impact on me, and pretty much everyone into heavy music. Their heavy sense of groove and aggression is undeniably influential, but I have to give props to Exhorder for probably having an influence on their “Power Groove” sound as well. Just listen to “Slaughter In The Vatican” and “Vulgar Display Of Power” and you can hear what I meant, you can also spot Phil Anselmo wearing an Exhorder T-Shirt online.

Cowboys From Hell is my favourite because that was my first Pantera Album, I heard it just 2 weeks before Dimebag’s passing so it was pretty sad. My old band used to cover Cowboys a lot at gigs.

That being said, every Pantera album is great for me, like even on “I Am The Night” there are some very sick guitar riffing and you could tell Dime was born to shred. When I need some motivation to workout or just get out of the bed, I like listening to “Vulgar Display Of Power”. “Power Metal” is a great album when I’m in an 80s metal mood with Phil Anselmo doing some kickass high pitch screams and singing slightly cheesy lyrics, and lastly “Great Southern Trendkill/Far Beyond Driven/Reinventing The Steel” are for excellent for angry pissed off days.

Slickster: You are based out of Singapore.  (Read Slickster writer Jon Lee’s account of Singapore) In general, not to highlight recent political summits of epic proportions that have been there … ahem, Sentosa Island, we’re looking at you… Singapore is a radically modern city.  Do you think it could become like MEGA-city someday?  For example, the first Capitol of the Earth?

MT: Singapore is radically modern indeed, we are also very tiny (697 sq km) so maybe not a MEGA-city. Despite being a tiny country, or as we like to call it a “red dot on the map”, it was surprising for me that the 2 leaders decided to meet here, so being a Capitol of the earth might not be impossible, who knows? Anyway, a lot people thought we’re in China so I hope they are better informed now 😊.

Slickster: Despite Singapore being ultra modern, there is still the location known as Orchard Towers.  Which is like a functioning brothel the size of a strip mall on each floor.  Patrons can get hookers and blow, and probably a few ladyboys too.  Be honest:  Have you ever been there and is this all true or just urban legend?

MT: Hahaha, you guys are naughty and well-informed ! Sure I have been there once in 2007, not to have sex with ladyboys but my old horror metal band “Psycho” had a gig on Halloween in one of the clubs there. My drummer’s dad was the lighting guy there so we got a show that night out of all places. It was a funny night playing for sleazy dudes and I remember a guy giving us the middle finger throughout an entire song while we were playing a song about eating babies and infanticide. My vocalist was holding a bloody baby prop with its head ripped off while singing, so that probably offended the guy because he left after that lol. Tommy Lee was there too probably looking for a good time when Motley Crüe played here in 2008, so to answer your question – it’s true!

Slickster: Let’s talk about your music.  You have a lot of collaborations with other musicians on Illegal Experiments.  How did these develop?  Do you trade files over the internet or actually meet in person in a studio somewhere?

MT: I’m big fans of these musicians so naturally the desire to collaborate with them developed while writing this album. Everything was done online via file trading, it was real easy and convenient.

Slickster: Which programs, drum machines, software, keyboards, etc…. do you use to create your sounds?

MT: Synth1 is my main soft synth, occasionally Tyrell N6 and Massive. My drum kit is made up of whatever drum samples or noise I could find that I tweak to my liking so it’s quite a Frankenstein monster-ish mess.

Slickster: Who would like to acknowledge in the synthwave, dark synth, Outrun community and give a huge shout out too?

MT: I give full credit to Perturbator and Protector 101 for showing me the path of light and salvation, I meant being my early influences because without their music I wouldn’t be doing this.

Big shout outs and eternal hails to the people I’ve worked with so far, Surgeryhead, Electric Dragon, Vulta, Neoslave, Gridscape, Gloom Influx, Irving Force, FaceXhugger, Neo LA and uNTIL Ben.

Slickster: Any live performances coming up soon for Microchip Terror?

MT: I’ll be playing my debut live show in July, Friday the 13th in Ventura, California organized by Neo LA and Club Fallout with Protector 101, COGEX, Glitbiter and FaceXhugger so if you guys are in the area do drop by it’s a free show !

Slickster: If you could go back in time and talk to your younger musical self, what would you tell your yourself?

MT: I would tell my younger self to pick up basic some piano lessons at least.

Slickster: Let’s run with this time travel questions… Where would you go?

MT: Probably back to the time just before my Braindead VHS tape got stucked in the player 😭 so I could stop watching it for the millionth time and keep it for good. Haha, ok maybe to 2150 just to see how the world would be like since we’ll never get to experience that era, maybe humans are no longer here and machines rule the world.

Slickster: That’s awesome!  I would definitely go ahead to the year 2150 and see if we can have sex with robots yet.  I’m not sure why I keep focusing on sex with robots today. Don’t judge me!  But seriously, humans are probably about 30 years away from creating some seriously hardcore sex bots.  When you accept that fact, the name of your musical outfit takes on a frightening new meaning.  You know? Like what happens, if you were getting hot and heavy with a sex bot, and suddenly the microchips became infested with malware!?  You know, like the vagina crushed your cock right in the middle of intercourse!?  Thoughts on this?

Synthwave - Microchip Terror
Synthwave – Microchip Terror

MT: Haha! You’re giving me ideas about a sequel to Illegal Experiments (hint hint), thanks! But in all seriousness, that probably isn’t too far from the truth because people are very much attached to their machines these days more so than humans. Sex Bots are already high in demand and many things that were once fiction are now becoming reality, it’s a scary yet interesting world we live in now. I’ll just go with the flow and use these craziness as inspiration for my art.

Oh, by the way here’s an excellent music video from Neoslave to give you an idea about what could go wrong while having sex with a bot 😉

Slickster: Ok, that got a little weird… Any last thoughts you would like to share before we wrap this up?

MT: Weird is always good ! Thanks a lot for the interview, I had a lot of fun. Take care !

Unicorn Dungeon Game Review

Unicorn Dungeon title

Written by Jonathan Lee, June 20, 2018, 10:24 PM. Tweet to: @Writerscube

From Stand Off Software (and thanks to the kind folks there for providing me with a review copy!) comes a tongue-in-cheek fantasy satire of a knight, Sir Typhil, embarking on a virtuous quest after the king of the land falls ill. A combination of click-and-play adventure gaming and 8-bit rogue-based dungeoneering, Unicorn Dungeon tasks you with finding and acquiring the game’s namesake: the unicorn.

Gameplay

It is important to know that Unicorn Dungeon is the first of a series, and so I believe the game was designed to be a quick play. The control scheme is as simple as it gets. Exploring the world only requires that you click to move Sir Typhil, interact with objects, and use objects you acquire with other objects in the world. When Sir Typhil enters the dungeon, however, it changes to a keyboard-based rogue-like minigame as you battle gratuitous numbers of jackals and spider hordes (and a couple tougher enemies) all while trying to acquire items, or move on with the story. I found it easy to forget at times that there was a character inventory that you’re supposed to use, and can use both within the goblin shop and the dungeon. So don’t forget!

The charm of this game lies not with the simplistic gameplay or minimal graphics, but in the satirical absurdist humor that accompanies it. You have goblins who manage a dungeon like it’s an escape room attraction. There’s a princess who willingly locked herself up in a dungeon so she could sneakily pillage a goblin of his food. And the game is hilariously self-aware of the tropes that its genre often caters to. There’s a shortage of ridiculousness in the fantasy sector of gaming, an itch that this game managed to scratch. And it’s a shame that it’s for so brief a time. But with luck, there will be more.

Unicorn Dungeon Game Over
It took me a bit to get a hang of the rogue-like dungeon area. As a result, poor Sir Typhil bit the dust quite a few times.

Final Thoughts

Unicorn Dungeon isn’t the most complex of tales, but since it’s supposed to be the first of a series, who knows where it’ll take us next. It’s a quick game that’ll give you a few chuckles, and nudge you in the ribs with the nostalgia stick. Is it worth the five bucks in the Steam store? I believe so. If Sir Typhil’s story really takes off with more game episodes, then there’s a real potential for this series to become something hilariously wonderful. And I, for one, am looking forward to seeing that happen. There are not too many games out there that tap into this sort of peculiar comedy anymore, (ah, I remember the days of King’s Quest and Sam & Max…) so there is plenty of room for Stand Off Software to stake its claim if it pushes forward with this series.

Canada Becomes Second Nation In The World To Legalize Weed: What Does That Mean For Us?

Last week the Canadian Senate passed a historic bill legalizing marijuana across the nation, becoming just the second country on Earth to lift such restrictions against the plant. With our northern neighbors taking such progressive steps, many in the United States are now wondering if it’s soon going to be our turn to join the party, and many are already clamoring to make reform a reality.

The only other nation on the planet that’s legalized the production, sale, and consumption of marijuana is Uruguay, but already nine states in the US have passed legislation allowing recreational use, and twenty-nine have come to see the light regarding medical use. This has built up a significant momentum for legalization on Capitol Hill, and already several prominent politicians have pledged to do what they can to create a change.  “The time has come to decriminalize marijuana” New York Senator Chuck Schumer explained in an interview with Vice News. “My thinking — as well as the general population’s views — on the issue has evolved, and so I believe there’s no better time than the present to get this done. It’s simply the right thing to do. ”

A major factor in the Canadian decision to legalize marijuana was the fact that its sale has helped to line the pockets of criminals across the country. With legalization, the government now has the means to regulate the industry and to take cash out of the hands of crooks and place it into bank accounts of legitimate business owners. “It’s been too easy for our kids to get marijuana – and for criminals to reap the profits” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted shortly after news broke of the bill’s passing. “Today, we change that. Our plan to legalize & regulate marijuana just passed the Senate.”

Canada’s new laws will allow all Canadians over 18 to possess up to an ounce of weed on them, and also enable individuals to keep as many as four plants within their homes for personal use. Additionally, the bill has mandated the creation of government-sponsored dispensaries to begin setting up shop across the country and experts believe that the first federal retail outlets should be up and running by October. These new shops are expected to generate a significant amount of revenue too, with CNN analysts predicting sales in excess of $4 billion within its first year alone. This means good things for the government coffers: that influx of cash is also expected to generate over $300 million in tax dollars that the government can use for other projects.

Recent polls show that overwhelmingly the majority of American voters also want to see legalization take place across the United States. 77% of Democrats, 62% of Independents, and 57% of Republicans say that they would be in favor of nationwide marijuana reform, and surprisingly even President Donald Trump has hinted that he might back such a measure.  “We’re looking at it, but I probably will end up supporting that deal,” the President told reporters in Quebec after being asked about a bill being sponsored by Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) which seeks to lift federal restrictions and intervention over state marijuana laws.

“We need to take a states’ rights approach to the legal marijuana question,” Sen. Gardner said in a tweet clarifying the purpose of his sponsored legislation. “Our bill does not legalize marijuana. Instead, it allows the principle of federalism to prevail as the founding fathers intended and leaves the marijuana question up to the states.” Should this pass, it would represent a massive about-face in the way the federal government approaches the marijuana issue, and could potentially herald a new way of thinking in local and state government’s nationwide.

Badass Moments in Ancient Greco-Roman History

0

300 is a pretty badass movie. Yeah, it’s not historically accurate but who cares!? It’s got backflips, slow-mo, and a metric shit ton of badass quotes and violence. But the funny thing? Yeah, Ancient Greece and Rome was practically swimming with BAMFs like that. So today we are going to be counting down some of the biggest badasses in Ancient Greece and Rome. We’ve got blood-soaked spears, balls the size of Atlas Stones, and enough testosterone to get all of the UFC popped by the USADA. So without further adieu let’s begin the countdown.

Greco-Roman Badass #5 – Spartacus

Speaking of UFC, let’s start off with a guy who could walk into the Octagon and promptly rip the other dude’s dick off. Spartacus was the original pride fighter. Well, he wasn’t just fighting for pride. He was also fighting to fucking live.  Sparty was originally a Tharcian warrior who would be captured and sold into slavery. Shit sucked. So he decided that instead of being killed for the entertainment of some wealthy fuckers, Spartacus decided to head elsewhere. And by head elsewhere, I mean he lead a giant rebellion and murdered the fuck out of the guy who bought him.

Spartacus - Badass
Spartacus in his “uniform”. Way more badass than some trunks.

Then they escaped and lived on the edge of a damn volcano – Mount Vesuvius. (The one that turned Pompeii into a pottery museum.) Afterward, they started to tour around the area like the Beatles or some shit. And their following? It grew to an army of more than 70,000 people in awe of the might Spartacus; ready to go fuck shit up for the Roman Empire. And who lead these fanboys to proper military training? Spartacus of course! Along the way, they wrecked shit until Marcus Licinius Crassus sent 50,000 well-trained Roman soldiers to take on Badassacus. I mean Spartacus. It took 50,000 of the most well-trained forces in the world to take on 70,000 farmers, slaves, and fan-girls. Spartacus was such a badass that the fact that he was the original Heavyweight Champion is the least notable part of his reign of steel balls.

Synthwave – Irving Force

Synthwave – Irving Force

Slickster Magazine covers men’s interests in a digital format.  Our interviews with porn stars are popular, as well as our video game reviews.    Recently signed by Zak Deligiannis at JST Records, Irving Force‘s long awaited debut LP “Godmode” has become a reality.   Featuring all of the idioms that make the genre so memorable and popular, Godmode continues to borrow from music styles outside of the community in order to breathe fresh sounds into the art form.  The results are noticeable.   Comprised of seven tracks, the listener gets their monies worth as Godmode weaves in and out of dissonant electronic noise to soaring melodies and incredibly infectious bass-heavy grooves.

Irving Force – Godmode

Slickster: Have you seen the E3 trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 yet, and what do you think?

Irving Force: I’ve seen it, a few times over! I mean it looks super cool but I would love to see some actual gameplay. The testimonials from people who got to see that all sound very promising! Trying not to get too hyped though, I have a feeling it’s gonna be a while before a release is imminent. But with that said…. I’m FUCKIN HYPED!

Slickster: How is life in Sweden now?  What’s happening right now in the country that is newsworthy?

Irving Force: Can’t complain! We’re having a very early and bright summer, which I’m pretty happy about. The rest of the year is usually pretty gloomy, with the winter being almost all dark, so you have to absorb all you can. Need that D! I’m talking about the vitamin.

Irving Force: We have an ancient saying here – “The summer, it is short. Most of it rains away. So take for you, the sun is shining today.” Some of it is lost in translation but they are words to live by.

I’m kind of a shut-in and an ignoramus so I don’t really follow the news all that much. My sister said they removed the government mail boxes that people leave their tax papers in so a bunch of retirees started mashing in their envelopes under the doors of government offices. I thought that was kind of funny. They had huge piles of letters just laying in their entrances.

Slickster: What is it about synthwave music that attracts you to the genre?

Irving Force: Well the 80’s in general often come off as the opposite of subtle and nuanced. I love stuff like that. When you can just take something at face value and it doesn’t try to come off as deep or whatever. Obviously synthwave has more aspects to it than that but the feeling of unsubtlety is kind of inherent within most of the tropes used. So there’s this kind of weird ass subtle unsubtlety going on. I am using that word too much.

I must admit I used to think a lot of the sounds from the period sounded really tasteless and hollow up until not that recently. When I discovered what some of the producers were doing in the scene there was this switch in my head that flipped and the feeling of “but what if it isn’t?” when hearing something so gross sounding so cool really tickled me. It really kind of turned my world up-side down to be honest. I had like a kitsch awakening. I started rediscovering stuff I had grown up with that I didn’t even realize I loved until then, it just presented this fresh new angle on something old.

Slickster: Is synthwave becoming too popular now?  Are too many musicians copying each other and not creating original music?

Irving Force: I wouldn’t say it’s too popular per se but there was a big wave a while back when I guess people figured out it was pretty easy to make and started flooding the scene with new music. It became really hard to spot the good ones among all of the carbon copies. I guess it’s that stage of inflation that happens to any genre as it grows. Maybe things are better now, I don’t know, I honestly kind of stopped paying attention around then and increased my daily dose of actual music from the 80’s instead. There’s a lot to sift through there as well though!

I don’t want to come off as a grump though, I still love synthwave and all the subgenres and there are a million awesome artists around! A big part of it for me is that I don’t want to start subconsiously stealing from other artists in the scene, I prefer consiously stealing from artists of different genres instead. Hopefully that kind of prevents some of that in-breeding.

Obviously I still listen to a lot of synthwave, I just choose my moments more carefully now.

The Making of the Violence Suppressor music video

Slickster: Your music video for Violence Suppressor is awesome!  We really loved the Kung Fury reference.  How did you create the video?

Irving Force: To make something you need either money or time and back then I guess I had an abundance of the latter, whereas now I don’t seem to have either, haha. The video started with me making just a short little conceptual audio clip for a Violence Suppressor film trailer just to set the tone for my then upcoming EP with the same name. I was showing it to my friend Tony “Anton” Silk and then it just kind of spun out of control from there. He helped me come up with a lot of concepts and shots that are in there. He also came up with the “Kung F U” quip.

I have made music videos before, for my own other projects and occasionally for other bands as well, so I did have some gear and experience. At the time I had access to a room no one used in the building I live in so I just bought a couple of green sheets and hung them in there, brought in some lighting and shot some stuff on and off with friends over like a week or two.

I had a basic idea of what I wanted and a few pretty simple notes of key shots, angles and characters I had to get, then I let people improvise whatever they wanted or just came up with stuff on the spot. The shot of the policeman looking around at a bunch of thugs and then deciding to blow his brains out was just my friend fucking around for instance, I thought it was a cool idea so I started filming other people on different days specifically to fit in with that shot. A lot of the sewer punks and thugs are just me in different costumes too.

I bought a bunch of cheap trash off ebay and also took multiple trips to second hand stores and flea markets for the costumes and most of the props, then I spread all that stuff out on a table and let people pick whatever they wanted for the thugs and stuff, with a little guidance and rules. I also asked everyone to bring whatever they could from home of course, I know a few nerds that collect different weapons and stuff like that.

Then we did film quite a few shots in different rooms in the building I live in and around around my area. I also got some internet friends to send me some footage of themselves for certain shots.

But that was all the fun stuff, probably took a little more than a month, then I had to spend like six more months doing the VFX and editing the whole thing, that was torture towards the end. The final step was scoring it, I had some very rough sketches from the original audio clip that I turned into the score. So it’s like a reverse music video kind of, I made the song to fit the visuals, not the other way around. Then I ended up turning the score into two songs off the new album, Violence Suppressor and Overlord, expanding on them further.

Slickster: We admit that we loved the video, except one thing; There were no hot babes in the video!  The only exception was a pink neon light that was in the shape a bikini stripper.  What’s up with that?  Why no sexy girls in the future?

Irving Force: Well, it’s supposed to be dystopian after all. I mean how can you tell really, maybe some of those masked sewer mutants are total babe lincolns under those rags? As I said, all the actors are my personal friends and I do have a few nerd friends that collect weapons so you can maybe kind of guess from what the rest of my circle of friends look like.

But yeah, the video definitely is a bit more homogeneous than I would’ve liked though, I did have a few ladies that said they were coming over to film but most of them ended up bailing in the end. But that is a weird coincidence now that you make me think of it. It’s probably just because of my creepy pedo beard.

Irving Force rocks a pedi beard for his new music video, Violence Suppressor.
Irving Force rocks a pedi beard for his new music video, Violence Suppressor.

Slickster: Do girls like synthwave or is it primarily just dudes?

Irving Force: If you look at my particular stats it doesn’t look too good, I have like 8% female listeners on Spotify. I do think I kind of cater to a certain audience with my themes and influences though, so I really don’t think this reflects on synthwave as a whole. I do feel like I see a lot of female synthwave fans around the internet and at shows though. And it’s nice to see! The largest group I would say are men in their late 20’s and 30’s.

Slickster: Do you have any live shows coming up?

Irving Force: Sadly not at the moment but we’re talking to people, I’m sure there’ll be something announced soon!

Slickster: Synthwave musicians are well connected around the globe and especially in Europe.  Are there any friends you’d like to take the time to recognize?

Irving Force: My Swedish buds Oscillian, Shyguys, Amplitude Problem, Vince Riviera, Waveshaper, Robert Parker and Jonas from Rad Rush Records are all super cool guys!

Check out Microchip Terror and Straplocked! Two fine gentlemen.

We played with Sung in Amsterdam recently and had a blast hanging out with him.

Megahammer and friends are really cool!

I could go on forever here.

Slickster: What message do you personally want to share with the world.  What is the most important advice you want to share with everyone?

Irving Force: Train, say your prayers, eat your vitamins and be true to yourself.

Synthwave interview – Stilz

Slickster Magazine frequently interviews established and emerging artists in the synthwave musical scene.  A complete list of the tremendous talent that has shared their thoughts, ideas, and most importantly, their music with Slickster can be found here.   The genre encompasses a profound love for electronic music.  However, it isn’t just limited to music that is created by computers, keyboards, and drum machines.  Enveloped within the art form is curious nod to the halcyon days of 80’s synthesizer excess, slasher and sci-fi movies, and the occasional neon glow of South Florida.

While as a population, we are nearly three decades removed from the Miami Vice era, the log reverberations of Jan Hammer and Harold Faltermeyer are still being heard.  Up and coming musicians are building on the electric forerunners of the day and continuing to develop new pallets of sonic wonder.  One such aural wizard is a Canadian  who goes by the name of “Stilz”.  With his second full length album being released on 6/8/2018 (Laserdics Records), we caught up with this Sultan of Synthwave.

Slickster: Stilz. After pondering this name long and hard, the best we could come up with was the idea of ‘still photo’ or painting of a inanimate model. Is that even close? What does that stagnate represent to you?

Stilz: The nickname was given to me during my high school years. My peers noticed that I’m a quiet and observant individual and they branded me with it.

Slickster: Do you care you share your Earth name or would you rather keep it a secret?

Stilz: Of course I can share my name. Online people know me as Chris Stilz but my real name is Chris Pavez.

Slickster: Your newest full length album, Sentient, is available for purchase on 8/6/2018. There is a tremendous amount of sonic material on this album. What would you like to say about your artist’s journey in creating this project?

Stilz: This project has been in the making for nearly 2 years; it is inspired by cyberpunk movies and video games such as Deus Ex, Ghost in The Shell, Oni, and Blade Runner. This project has sparked my passion in making my music much more cinematic.

Slickster: After listing to the promo-release of Sentient a few times, it feels like a concept album. What I mean by that is, each track has it’s own unique vibe, but when you listen without interruption from the opening to the final track, it all flows together. How did you accomplish this and was that a primary goal when you started working on the material?

Stilz: I believe that is my style at a baseline when creating a new album. It helps when I imagine a storyline to connect the music and achieve a general theme.

Slickster: Many artists collaborated with you on Sentient. Any shoutouts you want to give?

Stilz: Of course…. thanks to Electric Dragon for helping out with two tracks. Thanks to Nowtro for his support and wisdom. Thanks to Red Marker for his help in creating those synth leads. Thanks to Sid Barnhoorn for being a musical inspiration and his awesome additions. Thanks to Castroe for his synth work and helping to make the track a banger. Thanks to Night Raptor for his masterful work.

As always, I enjoy collaborating with other musicians. It definitely helps to hear others perspective of my vision.

Slickster: Sentient is being released on The Lazerdiscs record label. How did this partnership come about?

Stilz: When I was approached by Lazerdiscs Records back in 2016, I felt honored that they liked my music enough to create an album (Starcrash) and release with them.

Slickster: From your artists bio, it’s clear that you strongly believe sythwave deserves to be performed in front of a live audience. You list the Calgary Underground Film Festival, as one of the highlights of your career. What made this show so special, and how do you plan to recreate the main of that performance?

Stilz: I was contacted by the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) coordinator and asked if I would like to perform for opening night, and first showing in Canada, of the film Ex Machina. I was shocked and super excited to be a part of that. It was the first live performance of my synth music and it was really fun.

Slickster: What advice would you like to share with younger musicians who are just getting started or interested in making music?

“Make the music you want to hear. There’s nothing wrong with being your own biggest fan. Don’t go into music production wanting to sound like your musical idol, be inspired by them,” Chris Stilz. 2018

Slickster: Last question. Thanks for talking to Slickster Magazine and bets of luck with the release of Sentient. It’s not really a question, but more of blank canvas for you to say whatever you’d like. What is the most important message you would like to share with the world?

Stilz: Big thanks to everyone that has supported my music in the last couple of years, you guys and gals are the best. Having fans has really motivated me to create new worlds with my music. I hope you enjoy listening to Sentient!

Big thanks to Slickster Magazine for this interview.

Cheers

Icey Road Nintendo Switch Review
Icey Road Nintendo Switch Review

FantaBlade Network, and X.D. Network, Inc, presents Icey on the Nintendo Switch. While it has been available on other platforms, this game makes me content. It is a hack ‘n’ slash title. Icey reminds me of Strider. It is not Strider, but it feels, again, necessary for Nintendo’s platform. Portably, on a desktop, or on your television, the game fills in the gaps, at a decent price, of your Switch library. Get on a boat, a ship, or simply hunker down on an island, Icey, the Chinese independent title, delivers a solid, genre outing.

The Cold Story

Icey Road Nintendo Switch Review
Icey Trailer Coming Soon on Nintendo Switch HD by Dante Nintendo Switch World

Icey is a two-dimensional action title. You play the role of a character, Icey, that is a blank slate in a cold stasis. You escape. There is a Narrator. You push Icey, with instructions from the Narrator, toward the end of the game to confront a world-ending foe, Judas. The Narrator acts as a presence that can push you toward, or away from, your final goal. For example, The Narrator tells you arrows will push you closer to the end goal. You should follow these intructions. However, there are areas that you can visit and discover more about Icey’s world. Icey is my first metagaming experience. Quora offers a solid example of this. In the case of Icey, the game offers a solid, action game, with role-playing, and platforming, elements. However, Icey also offers twist, and turns, that can lead players to secret areas, bonus areas, and content outside of the game, if you move away from the Narrator’s advice. This is not a new idea, but it is a fresh concept for this game.

Crisp controls and game play

Icey Road Nintendo Switch Review
unnamed by X.D. Network, Inc. and FantaBlade Network

Icey’s controls are simple. Use the analog or digital control pad to move your character. X and Y buttons act as your hard and simple strikes. The A button is an action button meant to interact with Icey’s world, access upgrade menus, and allows players to deliver finishers to their enemies. The B Button is the jump button. I found out, late in the game, the R button is the ultimate dash button for the character to slide around the screen, and through some enemies’ attacks. Players can collect currency and access an upgrade menu for Icey. The upgrades include charged blast, longer dash ability, and special attacks to give Icey an advantage over her enemies. The game moves well. The action is fast and all of the buttons respond when you need them. Honestly, without a counter balance, the game’s enemies, Icey could be a very simple game. The game’s artificial intelligence, however, has other plans for your fun experience. The enemies in this game work as a team. Easy, or hard, the game uses enemy attacks against your best efforts. In most cases, enemies come on screen and attack. You simply take the offensive, or counter attack. Smaller enemies, with larger foes, make for a headache. I will also add smaller enemies in certain numbers, and combinations, make for difficult game play. For example, a large boss, Carlos, is a bulky machine that envelopes Icey when she gets to close and has a series of attacks that can ground your character, anywhere on the screen. Carlos works in tandem with smaller characters. One enemy shoots a simple laser to keep your character in place. The other enemy uses dash attacks to make Icey’s movements more difficult. Each enemy uses their skill in precise ways, as part of a gang attack. This is both great for the game, and unfair in certain cases. Timing, the right attack, and effort can get you to the end of the game.

Icey Road Nintendo Switch Review
ICEY coming to Switch + Limited Run helping with physical PS4 version by NeoGAF

I love Icey, on Nintendo Switch, for this reason. I recently purchased Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection, from Capcom. You can never get enough Street Fighter on a Nintendo console.   This is necessary. The game is almost a preparation for Street Fighter online play. None of the versions, in Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection, have an ability to change the difficult settings. The game offers precise control, for each version, and is an arcade collection of the games. It is a grind. You play the game and you lose, as much as you win, off, and online. Icey was the game I went to after this collection. Icey is fun, solid and a grind, but is an escape. Both games represent Nintendo Switch’s reality. Nintendo Switch has the games you want, where you want, but offers the challenge you had better be ready to face. This is a fun time to own a Nintendo Switch console. Nintendo’s Electronic Entertainment Expos presentation is very near. Icey’s appearance on the platform is just one more reason why Nintendo needs to keep doing what they are doing.

Glenwood Canyon Rafting Trip Review

0

Grizzly Creek, Colorado. Glenwood Springs Rafting TripAny Colorado summer vacation isn’t complete without a whitewater river rafting trip.  You can visit the Royal Gorge on the Arkansas, or the mighty Colorado.  The attraction to fresh water thrills is shared among hard core kayakers and beginners make some enjoyable memories.  If the snowmelt fed rapids aren’t quite your thing, there are plenty of lazy float trips as a completely acceptable alternative.   Grab an inner tube, a cooler full of your favorite beverage, and some friends and you’re ready for some Facebook selfies.  While looking for things to do in Glenwood Springs, we were invited by Defiance Rafting to come down and experience the raging waters of the Colorado River on a hot sunny Friday afternoon.

Now under new management

Glenwood Canyon Rafting Trip, Defiance RaftingDefiance Rafting was formally known by many names, including Rock Gardens.    Long time river enthusiast and Ft. Collins based attorney Gregory Cowen along his wife/business partner Heather Cowen teamed up to purchase the white water outfit in late 2017.  Rock Gardens was sold by Kevin Scheidner, who also owns Colorado Adventure Center (CAC).  The rafting operation was only a portion of Scheidner’s conglomerate of outdoor activities.  After relocating the CAC base to Idaho Springs, Cowen approached Scheidner and proposed the transaction in late 2016.   Cowen’s stepbrother Jamie Linstrum was an employee of CAC at the time and instrumental in helping to make introductions.  A little less than one year later, the sale was made and ownership of the No Name rafting was complete.

The name ‘Defiance’ is a throwback to the halcyon days of Glenwood Springs, Co.  Having a hard time adjusting to her new life in 1883, Town Founder Isaac Cooper’s wife Sarah persuaded her husband to change the name.  Her choice was Glenwood Springs, as a nod to her hometown of Glenwood, Iowa.  The name stuck, but some local businesses still choose to use the original moniker of Defiance.

Without making sweeping changes to the long running Glenwood business, there have been a few upgrades.  Website and social media overhauls, community outreach, featuring kid friendly rafting programs, and charity donations are all a part of their strategy.  Recently the couple donated a raft for the non-profit public transportation company RFTA as an end-of-season bonus.  Similar actions are quickly getting noticed among the residents of the Roaring Fork Valley.

Gregory brings a lot of hands on leadership to Defiance Rafting.  Kevin was great, but he was more of a business man. Gregory’s out there in the boats with the guides. He’s helping fit lifejackets and making sure people are comfortable. Whatever needs to be done, he’s around to take care of it,” said Linstrum.

Low water levels

The 2017-18 ski season in Pitkin, Eagle and Garfield Counties was lackluster to say the least. Snowfall in earnest did not arrive until Christmas Eve.  Although rebounds were made with some decent snowfall in February of 2018, the season was declared profoundly dead by closing day on April 15.  SkiCo, the corporation in charge of many ski resorts including Aspen, Buttermilk and Snowmass was hit hard financially.  There were even ‘soup kitchens’ set up for underemployed ski and snowboard instructors during the early part of the season to help feed hungry imported workers.  As a direct result of below average snowpack, the levels of tributaries peaked two weeks before Memorial Day.  Nearer the trip down Shoshone and No Name rapids the water levels were at an estimated at record low of 40% of their normal levels.

Defiance Raft Trip Review

Getting to Defiance Rafting

Driving to the rendezvous point is just as scenic as the whitewater trip itself.  Cruising down Highway 70, past Grizzly Creek in Glenwood Canyon, cell phone service cuts out, and conversations in the car are rekindled.  Steep rock walls are carved with a maze of viaducts, tunnels and vegetation running alongside them.  While the river snakes along the bottom, across from the Highway you can see the train tracks leading all the way to Denver.  Without a doubt, this is one of the more scenic sections of Interstate Highway system.

Exit at 119.   Finding the meeting point was easy, just follow the signs through the Glenwood Canyon Resort downhill.  Look for the freshly painted barn if the large red rubber inflatables weren’t enough to give it away.  There are also two very large school buses with the logo painted on the front.  If you drive into the Colorado River…. You’ve gone too far!

Defiance Rafting is subset within the Glenwood Canyon Resort.  Home to pristine waterfront tiny home rentals, plenty of RV and trailer hookups, a modern bathhouse, as well as larger cabins, the resort is popular stopping place for visitors to Colorado.  Lodge fees can swell during peak seasons, so check ahead for availability.

Raft Like a Local

Gregory and Jamie (Editors note: We met Heather Cowen later in the trip), greeted us at the counter and walked us through the release waiver.  White water rafting, while considered very safe, still has a risk element to it.  The waiver was easy to complete and done on a modern tablet.  The facilities are clean, and there is even a friendly old dog around to say hello to the kids.  His name is King Leonidas, aka ‘Leo,’ and he enjoys sleeping in the warm Colorado sun.

The other people we were to share a boat with arrived.  They came from Texas and Tennessee and an authentic Colorado River adventure was a highlight destination for them.  Around this time our guide arrived.   Jeremy Comeau is an eight year veteran river rat.  He has been with Defiance Rafting (formally Rock Gardens) for four of the past eight years.  Confident without being cocky, Jeremy helped fit PFD’s (Personal Floatation Devices), helmets, boots, and helmets.  He accomplished this up close and personal task with a lot of good natured humor that set the tone for the trip.

After everyone had been outfitted with properly sized gear, Jeremey led the group of seven novice rafters through a short but important safety briefing.   He set the group’s mind at ease by describing potential risks that we might encounter, and how to handle each one.  Basically, what happens if you fall out of the boat, or the craft gets stuck on a rock?  Identification of water hazards, proper ettiequte for waste disposal, and the opportunity to ask any questions was also a part of the briefing.

Wasting no time, we took a brief shuttle ride up Highway 70 to launch our raft.  The commute was short, air conditioned, and easy.  Once at our drop-off point, Shoshone Rapids, Jeremy rallied the group to help carry the inflatable boat to the water.  It was a good team building exercise, and helped condition everyone’s mind to the fact that we need to work as a cohesive unit in order to steer the boat.  With six people lifting the boat, moving it was easy, even down the landing ramp.  Once at the water’s edge, we were finally issued our own paddles and given a crash course on how to hold them, when to paddle and, perhaps most importantly, when to stop!

The team carries an inflatable raft down the boat ramp.

Throughout this entire introduction process, all the staff at Defiance Rafting really made an effort to make the guests feel at home.  Raft Like a Local’ isn’t just a hashtag on social media profile for them.  From the top down, every employee wanted the raft trip (even if it was only a short 40 min splash ride) to be genuine.   It is paying off too, as one of the couples on the trip had merely stopped in to investigate the tour, and found themselves quickly deciding to take a trip down the river.

Let’s get wet

After a few practice paddling commands from the skipper, Jeremy pulled over to an eddy on the side of the river.  Here, as we could finally see the Class III rapids of ‘Entrance Exam’ directly ahead of us, he gave the last chance for anyone to get out of the boat.  No one did and with the shout of ‘Forward’ we picked up speed.  Being pulled ahead with the river current, we splashed into the chilling water and rode the rapids.  It was thrilling for everyone onboard.

Jeremy Comeau gets ready to guide the boat through Shoshone Rapids
Jeremy Comeau gets ready to guide the boat through Shoshone Rapids.

The upper Shoshone rapids are Class III and II, unless unusually high river stages are reported.  Due to this fact, the rapids at the beginning of the whitewater tour progress quickly.   Although there is time to catch your breath between the turbulent parts of the river, the pace is fast-flowing.  None of the rafters fell out and the boat did not capsize.  At one point, Jeremy let rafters voluntarily jump overboard and feel just how cold the water actually was.  As ambient temperatures reached over 70 degrees FareFahrenheitnheight that day, dipping into the water was refreshing… after the plunge took your breath away on initial impact.

The second, lengthier portion of the No Name rapids park was a relaxed float through Class II and I rapids.  This was a great time to get your photos and enjoy the beautiful Colorado scenery.  The calm water allowed us to switch seats in the boat.  Everyone who wanted a front row seat got the opportunity.  Also, one guest at a time was allowed to go ‘bull rider’ style and ride on the bow of the boat.  This is a prime location for great picture taking and catching a small wave to the face.  There was another option for swimmers, but one dip in the frigid waters was enough for most.

While we occasionally paddled to keep some blood flowing, most people dried out in the warm sun and listened to Jeremey share lore about the Glenwood Springs canyon.  We waved at friendly locals as we stopped by Grizzly Creek rest area, finally making our way back to the Defiance Rafting headquarters.

It’s time to say goodbye

We took out at the Glenwood Canyon Resort, where our trip had started about 90 minutes prior.  Once again, working as a team, we lifted the boat out of the river and loaded it onto a waiting trailer.  A two minute ride later we were back at the boat barn and Gregory, Jamie and Leonidas were waiting for us.  As guests peeled off wet life jackets and helmets, Jeremey did his best to talk rookies into drinking the river water sloshing around in their neoprene boots.  No one fell for it.

A professional photographer trailed us on her bike during the rafting trip.  Her photographical wares were available for purchase after the trip, and I do believe one of the couples (on their honeymoon) purchased some memories.  There was also a bar and grill open for anyone whose stomach was growling.  While at the eatery, we ran into Heather Cowen. She was organizing a complete line of hats, t-shirts and other must-have souvenirs. Even if she had heard the same stories a million times before,  Heather was excited to hear about our trip and interested in our experience,

Raft like a local”… Defiance Rafting might be on to something here.

UFC 225: Whittaker vs Romero 2 Preview & Predictions

0

Main Event: Robert Whittaker vs Yoel Romero (UFC Middleweight Title)

Betting odds: Whittaker -200 or 10/21, Romero +201 7/4.

These two were barely separable the first time they met just shy of a year ago. On that occasion, they were contesting an interim belt, this time it’s for the Undisputed Middleweight Title.

Robert Whittaker was promoted to Undisputed Champion when Georges St-Pierre vacated the title due to complications with his health. Whittaker was unable to immediately defend his title earlier this year after being sidelined with an injury so Yoel Romero stepped in to replace him in his scheduled fight with Luke Rockhold instead.

Romero was victorious, now we have an exciting rematch on our hands.

The first fight as I mentioned previously was highly competitive. I had it 2-2 going into the final round, with 90 seconds left in round five Romero tripped over.

Whittaker took advantage of the situation by finishing the round on top.

I for one am happy this rematch is happening because these two have complementary styles. The last one was a chess match but it has the components to heat up at any minute.

Whittaker’s Blueprint to Victory

Neutralize Romero’s power.

Romero has a unique ability to explode quickly, something genetic that can’t be taught. He can end the fight in an instant regardless of what’s happened prior to that moment, we’ve seen him do it countless times already.

The power Romero carries comes with a price, he has to attack in bursts to avoid getting tired. Whittaker used a front kick to the body anytime he anticipated one of Romero’s charges last time to maintain distance. Even if Whittaker doesn’t employ the same tool this time he must avoid the charge to stay in the fight.

Avoid the takedown.

Romero is a former Olympic level wrestler, it’s in Whittaker’s best interest to keep the fight standing.

Any time he was taken down by Romero he managed to get up relatively quick without sustaining much damage.

It’s vital for Whittaker’s success in this fight to keep it a kickboxing match for the majority of the contest.

Be unpredictable.

Romero has fantastic awareness, he’s only had 15 MMA fights but he’s been competing at the highest level for a long time. His ability to recognize patterns is uncanny and as such Whittaker should refrain from repeating techniques over and over. The more Whittaker can keep Romero guessing the less chance he’s got of getting caught with something that can end the fight.

Romero’s Blueprint to Victory

Slow down the younger opponent.

In complete contrast to Romero, Robert Whittaker is an active striker. Instead of fighting in intervals Whittaker keeps chipping away making his opponents work. Yoel Romero can’t afford to go strike for strike with Whittaker so he needs to find a way to slow Whittaker down to a pace more suited to him. Romero did this effectively in the last fight by attacking Whittaker’s front leg.

You would expect Whittaker to be prepared for the low kicks this time but Romero could also attack the body to get the same desired result over the course of the fight.

Dictate where the fight takes place.

Being the more well-rounded fighter Romero has an advantage on the ground, he may not want to spend the entire fight grappling because energy depletion will become more of a factor. It would be a mistake on Romero’s part to spend the whole fight purely striking when Romero could control portions of the fight with his superior wrestling.

Whittaker will become hesitant with his offence if Romero can score a few takedowns, the threat of the takedowns will also create some deception which Romero can capitalize on to land strikes of his own.

Look for the Finish.

The two most likely outcomes of this fight are Whittaker by decision or Romero by stoppage. Whittaker managed to win a decision in the first fight even though his knee was compromised. If the fight goes 25 minutes you’d expect Whittaker to outwork Romero 8 times out of 10. Romero is a freak of nature but there are limits to what he can do at 41 years of age. He can’t keep a high pace with a man 14 years his junior, what he can do is take Whittaker out with the god given ability to manoeuvre his body from point a to b at a speed few athletes can match.

Romero’s best chance of victory is to create an opening and end the fight much like he did against Luke Rockhold. He was patient without letting Rockhold gain too much momentum & when the opportunity presented itself, Romero took it immediately.

No judges needed, no regrets, no feeling hard done by, this is Romero’s path of least resistance.

Co-Main Event: Rafael dos Anjos vs Colby Covington (UFC Interim Welterweight Championship)

Betting odds: Rafael Dos Anjos -125 or 8/11, Covington +113 or 11/10.

I’m not so sure we needed an interim title fight at 170lbs but we’ve got one anyway. Regardless of the belt, it’s an interesting match-up for many reasons.

Former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has looked better than ever since moving up a weight class, wins over Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny, and most recently Robbie Lawler is a solid run in the welterweight division. The win over Lawler was particularly impressive as Lawler is a hard nights work for anyone in the world at that weight class.

Tyron Woodley is the only man to beat Lawler convincingly since his return to the UFC with a first-round knockout, after that you’d have to say RDA’s victory was the most dominant. Dos Anjos shut out Lawler over 5 rounds, all 3 judges scoring the fight 50-45 in favour of the Brazilian.

Colby Covington hasn’t been nearly as impressive in the octagon, he beat Demian Maia in Brazil on October of 2017 which is his only key win. Normally that wouldn’t be enough to earn anyone an interim title fight but Covington has been causing a stir with his behaviour outside of the octagon. Covington’s antics have propelled him to the position he finds himself in now.

https://youtu.be/nu_m3G3jjig

Covington hasn’t shown us anything spectacular, he’s picking his fights very intelligently. Maia, an older guy in the division who’s primarily a ground specialist was a good matchup for Colby seeing as wrestling is Colby’s strength which meant he could steer clear of the danger Maia presents.

Rafael dos Anjos has struggled with wrestlers before, tie that in with the fact that Dos Anjos is a smaller welterweight it’s fair to say Colby has more than a good chance of winning. If Colby does win he’ll get a title shot off the strength of two victories, talk about a shortcut to the top.

There are welterweights more deserving of this fight but money talks. People want to see Colby fight, for better or worse.

CM Punk vs Mike Jackson

Betting odds: CM Punk +190 or 9/5, Jackson -190 or 5/11.

Both of these guys have an MMA record of 0-1, Mickey Gall is their common opponent. CM Punk (real name Phil Brooks) is from the world of professional wrestling, WWE is his bread and butter which is a whole different ballgame to MMA.

There was some outcry over the decision to put him on the main card of a PPV event on his debut in 2016, it was justified after his performance proved Brooks lacked the experience to compete in the UFC.

Fast forward 20 months CM Punk is fighting a fellow novice, Mike Jackson is himself inexperienced so this fight may at least be competitive. We don’t know how long Brooks’s run in the UFC will last, this could well be his swansong but he’s desperate to prove a point to the naysayers.

Predictions

Robert Whittaker vs Yoel Romero (Whittaker KO/TKO)

Rafael dos Anjos vs Colby Covington (Dos Anjos Decision)

Holly Holm vs Megan Anderson (Holm Decision)

Andrei Arlovski vs Tai Tuivasa (Tuivasa KO/TKO)

CM Punk vs Mike Jackson (Jackson KO/TKO)

Blu-ray Review: Red Sparrow – Tangled Humiliation

0

Based on the book written by Jason Matthews (formerly of the CIA), Red Sparrow is directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 & 2, Constantine) with a screenplay by Justin Haythe (The Lone Ranger, A Cure for Wellness). The book was originally part of a trilogy and even though the Red Sparrow film bombed domestically, it made nearly 1.5 times its budget overseas. Film adaptations of Matthews’ other two books in the trilogy, Palace of Treason and The Kremlin’s Candidate, could materialize in the coming years due to Red Sparrow’s $148.5 million worldwide lifetime box office gross on a $69 million budget.

Jennifer Lawrence portrays a well-known ballet dancer named Dominika Egorova. Taking place in the present day in Russia, Dominika supports her feeble mother (played by Nip/Tuck’s Joely Richardson), but that support comes into question after Dominika sustains a career ending injury. With nowhere else to turn, Dominika relies on the assistance of her uncle Ivan Vladimirovich Egorov (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone) who works for the Russian government. She is recruited to State School Four where she will become a “Sparrow” for Russia and learn to use her body as a weapon. Meanwhile, a US agent named Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton) has a Russian mole who has been giving away all of Russia’s secrets to the US. Dominika is assigned with uncovering the name of Nash’s contact.

Please…don’t make me do another X-Men movie…

There’s a lot to process with Red Sparrow and yet not nearly enough to be completely memorable. The big draw for the film is that this is the first time Jennifer Lawrence has been entirely nude on-screen. Red Sparrow isn’t about showcasing beautiful bodies or having an erotic presentation; the spy thriller thrives on making the audience feel just as violated as Dominika is throughout the film. She’s raped twice over the course of 140-minutes; once to destroy who she once was and another time for power purposes. She’s also tortured heavily in the film and the fight sequences have this raw brutality to them that hit hard enough to almost make you feel sore just from watching them.

But strip the shock and cringe elements from Red Sparrow and all that’s left is a spy film that takes too long to get its message across. There are side elements that eat up valuable moments of the story that would be considered a total waste, but they somehow U-turn back into Dominika’s story by the time it’s all over. Perhaps the film is poorly edited, but a better solution would be to trim or cut those sequences entirely. The film has a tendency to show the audience too much. The element of sex follows the same rules of a horror film. The people who experience said intercourse are either about to die or wish they were dead due to their lives being ripped apart by the government. Red Sparrow has a visual appeal with beautiful foreign countries, exquisite interior design, and a use of color (mostly red) that makes nearly every scene cater to your optic nerve.

As Dominika begins to work for her uncle, her mother tells her, “You hold something back. Don’t give him all of you.” Red Sparrow isn’t an enjoyable film; it’s a power struggle between two nations. The story seems to run in circles, but it does succeed in making you feel uncomfortable. It’s understandable why Jennifer Lawrence did this film since it’s so different from anything she’s ever done and Francis Lawrence has somehow found a way to blur the line between beauty and terror, but the downside is Red Sparrow isn’t entertaining to watch. The story fails to captivate and instead leaves you feeling groggy and lethargic. Dominika’s journey is tiresome just from witnessing it. Red Sparrow temporarily stains your corneas with disgust and humiliation, but is rinsed away and forgotten about as soon as you stop watching it like a bad first date or messy one night stand.

That’s right, I said restore my scenes from Dumb and Dumber To.

The Blu-ray of the film is loaded with over 95 minutes of extras. Along with director commentary by Francis Lawrence and deleted scenes (12:20) with optional director commentary, the disc includes six featurettes:

  • A New Cold War: Origination and Adaptation (12:42) dives into being based on Jason Matthews’ book, the studio being behind a hard R-rating, and going into detail how the film blurs the loyalty between the Russian and American governments.
  • Agents Provocateurs: The Ensemble Cast (15:21) talks about how different the tone of Red Sparrow is from anything Jennifer Lawrence has done up to this point and how comfortable Jennifer Lawrence and Francis Lawrence have become after working together on four films while Francis continues to push Jennifer as far as her abilities and talent as an actress go.
  • Tradecraft: Visual Authenticity (13:28) showcases the sets of the film, production design, architecture, landscape, and the intricate details of how the film was designed while including comments from cinematographer Jo Willems and costume designer Trish Summerville among others.
  • Heart of the Tempest: On Location (10:56) has production designer Maria Djurkovic discussing how the film was shot in Moscow, Budapest, Slovakia, Vienna and London while also looking at the visual consistency of the film and how the crew scouted locations.
  • Welcome to Sparrow School: Ballet and Stunts (12:12) chronicles how they made a self-admitted clumsy oaf (Jennifer Lawrence) seem like a competent ballerina. She trained for six days a week, three hours a day, and had a dance double from the waist down.
  • A Puzzle of Need: Post-Production (14:08) looks at how the film relies on being shot in center frame, visual symmetry, wide shots, its dark content and mature factor, documents the film editing process, the importance of sound design, and how James Newton Howard composed the mostly orchestral score.

Red Sparrow is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K, on demand, and digital HD.

Boss Key Productions Closes Down

Written by Jonathan Lee, May 25, 2018, 10:00 PM. Tweet to: @Writerscube

It is always a sad thing when a game studio must close its doors. People lose their jobs. Players can no longer look forward to the studio’s next gaming title. And the global gaming community suffers a loss of creative energy and innovative potential. That is unfortunately what has happened, on May 14 of 2018, and the victim’s name is… Boss Key Productions, a studio helmed by Cliff Bleszinski, or Cliffy B.

The costs of producing a game back in the days of Jazz Jackrabbit are nothing like they are in these days of big AAA titles. Whether it’s coding, animation, or even voice acting, every key component of a video game is costly. It can range from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. That makes the success of the video game all the more important. The challenge of just breaking can be incredibly daunting.

After Boss Key Production’s high-action arena shooter Lawbreakers fell to underwhelming sales, the studio attempted to tap into the Battle Royale genre with the colorful Radical Heights. While the game received generally positive feedback, it was unfortunately too late for the studio and Cliff Bleszinski announced on his twitter that Boss Key Productions was going to have to close down.

https://twitter.com/therealcliffyb/status/996092708971274245

An Overwhelming Struggle

Several factors likely contributed to Boss Key’s downfall, despite the fact that Lawbreakers and Radical Heights were both seen as having fun gameplay. Lawbreakers provided an exhilarating experience that gave the arena shooter genre a few new twists. Both of Boss Key’s games entered genres that were not necessarily over-saturated (as in the number of games that were actively hogging the scene), but the main base of players for those genres were already heavily-invested in existing titles.  With the likes of both Overwatch and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it’s easy to see that a lot of players were very preoccupied.

There were ways to overcome this that unfortunately were unreachable, such as returning to a free-to-play model (if Boss Key Productions had desired to) due to the publisher Nexon deciding on not providing any future support for Lawbreakers, declaring that they would ”not be accruing any other impairment loss pertaining to LawBreakers in the future” in a Q3 2017 Earnings Conference Call.

What Could’ve Been?

Some games have proven able to gain a larger player base amidst a saturated market. One great example is the multiplayer third-person shooter Warframe. It’s free-to-play, with a bunch of paid content that players can pay for if-and-when they want. With the game’s great gameplay features and being free-to-play, players were all right with paying some here and there for paid content. As a result, Warframe grew, slowly but surely. Lawbreakers was originally meant to be free-to-play, but was moved to a premium model. This would’ve been fine if game sales were not below expectations.

Could It Be The End?

I, along with many others, do hope that Cliffy B. isn’t leaving the gaming industry forever. At present, he sounds relieved to be free from being a CEO. However, perhaps one day, he’ll get bored enough to come back and gift us with some more awesome ideas—awesome ideas that’ll get the attention they deserve. He returned once. As a fan of his works since I was just a little kid gamer, I sure hope he’ll return again.

What does legalized sports gambling mean for Fantasy Sports?

Daily Fantasy Sports Landscape Cloudy After Supreme Court Enables States to Legalize Sports Betting

With the dust starting to settle a bit from the Supreme Court’s decision to enable states the choice to legalize sports gambling, there is still much unknown about how the daily fantasy sports industry (DFS) will be affected.

The Supreme Court failed to specify if the sports betting landscape would be subject to federal regulation or if it would be up to each state to regulate. The big players in DFS, DraftKings and FanDuel, have been fighting for their product at a state level for a few years.

Recent Separation of Major Sports Leagues from DFS Concerning

Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association want to remain partners but shed ownership stakes in daily fantasy sports giants FanDuel(FD) and DraftKings(DK). No financial terms or other pertinent information has been released at this time.

MLB released a statement saying, “While we have initiated discussions regarding potential changes to the structure of our relationship, we look forward to continuing our valued partnership with DraftKings. MLB and DraftKings will continue to collaborate on innovative approaches to enhance the fan experience.”

NBA spokesman Mike Bass similarly added, “This space is evolving and we saw the need to take a fresh look at the structure of our relationship. FanDuel has been, and will remain, a great partner. We have simply modified some of the components of our partnership.”

FanDuel’s released a brief statement, “FanDuel and the NBA will remain close commercial partners.”

DraftKings spokesman went a little more in depth, “Major League Baseball was the first professional league to invest in DraftKings and their partnership over the last five years has been instrumental to our growth and success. Our ties to MLB are as strong as they have ever been.”

Could MLB and the NBA’s recent move been a foreshadowing of the Supreme Court’s decision to put sports gambling in the hands of individual states? MLB and the NBA have a great opportunity to individualize a sports betting product with each team and their respective stadium. Shedding ownership in DK and FD is the first step in creating their own DFS entity and taking a micro approach to change the landscape of sports betting as it is currently constituted today.

The “Empty Space” DFS Filled for Sports Gambling Consumers is Gone

While most agree that DFS is a form of sports betting, it has been legal in most states since its conception. The Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIEGA), there is a mouthful, bans online poker games and other games of chance, but views DFS as a game of skill more than luck and doesn’t consider it comparable to other banned betting activities. The DFS industry has taken full advantage of this Act and has battled states, courts, and the government to keep their product available to as many states as possible.

For the past few years, DFS has been teetering on the edge of being a game of skill or a game of chance. But the fact that they kept their product legal in most states allowed sports gamblers to participate and get their fix in the industry. With the recent decision to give each state the power to control sports gambling, the niche DFS had is now gone. The options for sports betters will be plentiful and DFS will lose players as there will be new options for consumers to play.

DFS Could Benefit and Thrive

DraftKings has been proactive in their effort to provide sports betting and has the resources in place to move forward. FanDuel hasn’t confirmed if they have been working a sports betting angle, but smart money says they have.

But say FanDuel hasn’t, a move both DK and FD can make is to merge into a DFS giant combing resources and funding to create a super product. While they have tried to unsuccessfully merge before, the new sports betting landscape may push them to find common ground and get the deal done.

However, a merger is worrying DFS players who enjoy the different platforms that FD and DK offer. Both sites have different amounts of players and positions which leads to different strategies for each site to be successful and win money. What will happen if FD and DK merge? Will the games offered remain unique or will they be lumped into one or the others style? With the new options available for sports betting consumers, would enough frustrated players jump ship to new options and leave FD and DK reeling? Definitely more questions than answers at this time.
