Immortal Guardian interview

0
It’s hard to believe Slickster Magazine will be turning three years old soon.  Since the beginning we’ve always tried to promote unsigned bands, DIY filmmakers, indie game devs, and undiscovered models. During that time, we’ve met and had a lot of great conversations with those among this list.  The Angry Video Game Nerd, James Rolfe, happens to be one of the best interviews, IMO.
Immortal Guardian, the progressive neo-thrash, metal band is also included among the “pull yourself by the bootstraps” artists that is now featured among on our award winning blog.  Covering a wide range of subject matter in relation to heavy metal, Guardian was fun to talk too and didn’t pull any punches when answering tough questions.  Apparently they also know where all the hot babes go to check out live music too.  Check out their new single and be sure to catch a live show of theirs if they come anywhere near you.  Delivering a solid punch, Guardian is FFO old school, NWOBHM (look it up) as well as new comers to the genre.
Special thanks to Anastasiia at Grand Sounds for arranging the interview.

Slickster: The new album is called “Age of Revolution” and comes out Sept 28th. In support of the album you’ve prerelease a lyric video for the single, “Zephon“. PS: It’s bad ass! First of all, let’s start with the basics…. Is there anything out there about I.G. that is totally untrue? Lay the rumor mill to rest.

Carlos Zema: Thanks! We were really happy with the way it came out. I had the pleasure of designing the album artwork for Age of Revolution so it was really cool to see an animator bring it to life for the video!

I assume the rumor you are talking about is if Immortal Guardian ever was a Christian/White metal band? We can lay that rumor to rest as a solidified “NO”. You see I’m pretty eclectic when it comes to spirituality, Cody believes in drums, Thad’s a robot, and Gabriel’s a Scientologist or some shit. I don’t think we could be a white metal band even if we tried!

Back in the day the logo of the band was a cross instead of a sword as it is nowadays. The designer went with a morbid theme, along the same vibe as Black Sabbath and other doomish bands. But upon my joining the band, we rebranded the logo by replacing the cross with a sword instead, more along the “guard” theme.

A heavy metal musician from the band Immortal Guardian plays guitar and keyboards at the same time.

Slickster: What does the name Immortal Guardian mean to you?

Carlos Zema: I coincidently had a band for years in Brazil before I moved to the US that was called Heaven’s Guardian. So it almost feels like I have been a guardian my whole life. LOL,

I can also reciprocally state that for Gabriel, in a sense that he changed his last name from Guardiola to Guardian after so many people began calling him that at shows. Therefore, we are all guardians in this band. LOL… Seriously though, The name means a lot to me in the sense that it is something that we all should strive to be, protectors of our people, our planet, our ideals. Guardians of the teachings and memories of our heros. An immortal entity that is always defending all this, keeping balance and order against the evil powers that be. Making sure that, we the people, persevere without further injustice. The strongest awakening happens intellectually. The message is there, the music carries on.

Slickster: Ok, we need to pay some homage. Texas lost Vinnie Paul Abbot. (If you have to ask who that is, you’re reading the wrong interview). Can you tell us your favorite Pantera album, and discuss Pantera’s influence on you and your music.

Gabriel Guardian: I’d also have to say “Cowboys from Hell” was the big one for me. The guitar playing, songwriting, delivery, everything was there. It really sucks to see Vinnie Paul leave us so soon. Had it not been for Pantera and the Abbot brothers I would not be the musician I am today. It is still one of my biggest honors to say that Pantera shared my “Cemetery Gates” dual shred tribute to Dimebag a few years back. Texas and heavy metal will never be the same without those legendary souls.

Cody Gilliland: That’s a tough one, but as a drummer I’d have to say “Cowboys from Hell” is my favorite album due to the heavy riffs, wailing vocals, and of course Vinnie’s insane double bass drumming! May their spirits shred on for all of eternity!

Carlos Zema: Pantera was one of my favorite bands when growing up, much respect! Excellent musicianship, CFH is a masterpiece.

Thad Stevens: Seems we’re all in agreement: Cowboys from Hell is where it’s at! Rex’s bass playing during most of the solos has always been pretty inspirational to me. It’s cool to hear a metal band that’s not afraid to let the bassist hold it down during solos without an accompanying rhythm guitar track. Their later albums may have had a more lasting influence in certain styles of metal, but CFH is the greatest in terms of that kind of musical cohesion; or at least, the kind that I enjoy!

The drummer for Heavy Metal band, Immortal Guardian, smiles at the camera while playing on stage.

Slickster: Alright, here’s a hard one…. A gun is to your head, chose one prog metal band as your favorite. Do you choose Symphony X or Dream Theater?

Cody Gilliland: No brainer. Symphony X all the way! Better drums, better vocals, and better songs in my opinion. They’ve always been one of my favorites and a huge influence in my drum playing.

Gabriel Guardian: Ooooo thats a tough one, why do you do this to me?! Haha
I’d have to say Symphony X is my preference over DT just cuz i listened to them longer at a much younger age so their songs resonate with me much more and bring back beautiful memories. But i probably listen to as much DT now as Symphony x.

Carlos Zema: They are equally two of my favorite bands! LOL…

Thad Stevens: Both are fantastic bands, but Symphony X is more to my taste with respect to heaviness, and to consistency.

Slickster: The vocals and guitar playing on “Zephon” are world class, not to discount the bass, keys, drums or production. Let’s focus on the vox for a moment. There is a well crafted blend of guttural growls and clean operatic melodies. Where so many prog metal bands lose it is with the half-assed vocals. How do you guys go about deciding when and where to use distorted vocals and when to use clean lines?

Gabriel Guardian: For me personally, I’ve never been a huge fan of scream vocals, but that doesnt mean I don’t like them all together. I listen to a ton of bands with scream vox, so its normal. But I see screaming vox like I see spicy food. I’m not a fan of it, but I know that if I make this meal spicy people will love it! And the band loves the spicy too so I just eat it 🙂 haha

Carlos Zema: Everybody in the band listens to all kinds of Metal. I had started singing guttural vocals as a kid, before deciding to sing any note. Cody, our drummer, listens to Extreme Metal most of the time. The guys in the band, have a lot of influence from Dimmu Borgir, as well as many other heavier bands. I personally find it very easy to always go more aggressive. But we all try to keep it as interesting musically as we can. I feel like we try to be natural and let the music decide. Sometimes you need technique, melody, and well written arrangements. And sometimes you need it dark, aggressive and raw. I like the balance we have achieved within the band. We are certainly not afraid to be audacious and versatile.

Cody Gilliland: Well, in our previous albums I feel the heavy vocals were never up to par, whether it’s getting drown out in the mix or it just never got recorded. So for this album I stepped up my aggressive vocals and tried to add as much of my heavier metal influences into the record without being too overbearing. For the most part, the songs were written and recorded (pre-production) to the finish with only clean vocals, then after listening back to it over and over, Carlos or I came up with ideas where we could put some screams in. Then if everyone liked it, I’d have to jump behind the drum-set to see if i could actually pull off screaming the part while playing drums.

Slickster: Did metal die in the 1990’s, only to be resurrected later?

Carlos Zema: I believe that Metal has never been “a thing” of the moment. It has never been a trend. You see several waves come in and out, such as Grunge, New Metal, etc… However you call it. But Heavy Metal, on itself, is one of the most eclectic genres of music in my opinion. You can make almost anything into metal and we’ve seen it recreated throughout years. Metal has been molded through all these tendencies, then it keeps going, evergreen, neverending. But it never really gets to be a super mainstream thing. I believe that is because other styles of music that get to be the “thing of the moment”, eventually fade away. People get tired of it. I believe this is the reason why Iron Maiden is still cool. 🙂

Gabriel Guardian: It has always been cool to be the rare, be different, the more complex, challenging musically, counter culture, rebel-ish, alternative, however you wanna call it. If you want to hear me play something that’s more “mainstream” or “not dead” then go check out my electronic music, I got plenty haha. But if you wanna hear the kind of music that just pours out of me naturally with no rules or barriers, listen to my work in Immortal Guardian. I don’t care if metal is dead or not dead, I’m going to play it anyways, I love it, metalheads love it, and it’s not going anywhere.

Thad Stevens: The 90s is probably my favorite decade of metal. The scene would look a lot different today without the 90s contributions of Death, Meshuggah, Atheist and Cynic, Earth and Boris, etc. Metal never dies: it’s always in motion and there’s always a scene whether it’s in the public eye or not.

Slickster: It’s hard to believe there was a time when babes used to come out to metal concerts. I’m not talking about chicks who wanted to fuck Bon Jovi or other hair-metal fakers. I mean, there were chicks who came out to check out Ozzy and other 80’s legends. Although, metal is a testosterone fueled art form and therefor isn’t a major draw for girls, is there anything that can be done (without selling out) to appeal to a more female audience?

Carlos Zema: I personally believe, that the girls in metal, generally, are a lot smarter than the ladies outside the Metal or heavier music’s scene. For some reason, liking something that is not in the mass media, is something a lot more likely to be chosen by more curious, audacious and intelligent people. So the result is that all the metal ladies might be the minority of our crowds, but they are certainly the keepers! The plan to gather more and more of these rare masterpieces, is under construction. As we contribute to our movement, and fellow headbanger’s legacy. We believe that with the right melodies, associated with outrageous riffage, the right intensity and precise aggressivity, the members of the Female HeadBanger Clan, will constantly increase presence in the shows. As they have shown to be doing in the latest Immortal Guardian shows. Thank you for all your support!

Gabriel Guardian: Yeah I think that metal can very well bring back chicks into the scene. It’s definitely not going to happen with what’s currently out, but I feel there’s going to be a great movement and shift of people soon….After being an electronic artist for 4 years, I saw how dubstep went from being a super bro-filled genre to having tons of chicks at shows. If dubstep and heavy bass music can do it, so can metal! lol

Slickster: … Then why the fuck are we doomed to a life time of “sausage-fests” in sweaty clubs, surrounded by bros in black leather jackets and blue jeans?

Carlos Zema: Man, we will hook you up with the right spots. We usually prefer spots with better views. Jokes apart, independently of the gender they will most likely be wearing leather and jeans, so let’s admit that we are set to live a lifetime in leather. Might as well, get used to it. Boys you gotta be more positive about it.

Slickster: Bring it on!  I’m totally down to find out where these watering holes are!  Will you be touring in support of the new album?

Carlos Zema: Yes, and we can’t wait! We are soon to hit the road again with our brothers from Exmortus, as far as the U.S. goes. We are also working towards hitting the international markets, returning to the South American and Russian regions where we had great success in previous tours, and also tapping into the Asian/Japanese market.

Slickster: Thanks for talking with Slickster Magazine about music and Age of Revolution. Good luck with the new tour. What message would you most like to share with the world? What is the most important thing you want to impart to people who read this interview?

Immortal Guardian: It was our pleasure! Thank you Slickster Magazine for the fun interview!

The message we’d like to share with the world is one of positivity, progress, and power. We want people to know that there is great change happening in the world for both good and bad. But if we simply line up our thoughts and spirits and put aside our conflicting differences, we can make this blue marble a better place for all of us and our future selves. It’s much easier said than done, but with power of music we can resonate with people’s cores.

On a final note, our debut album Age of Revolution is out on September 28th on M-Theory Audio! Join the revolution and make sure you pre-order that shit! We’ll see you on the road!!! \m/

Mission: Impossible – Fallout Review: Dud on Arrival

0

Mission: Impossible – Fallout had the best opening weekend of the entire series with $61.2 million (and another $94.6 million overseas). This is the film Tom Cruise broke his ankle on and the film Henry Cavill just had to have a mustache for that made those re-shoots for Justice League have such disastrous results. The sequel has a whopping 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86 Metascore on Metacritic. Critics and the general movie-going audience emphatically and enthusiastically adore this film and personally it doesn’t register why the Mission: Impossible franchise is so cherished by movie lovers.

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, Sean Harris as villain Solomon Lane, and Rebecca Ferguson as former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust all return from Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation; this is the first film where a director and a villain have returned from a previous film. The technical aspects of the film are the easiest to admire and the action sequences are outstandingly breathtaking. The big action sequences include the parachute/free fall sequence with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and August Walker (Henry Cavill), the bathroom brawl with Hunt, Walker, and John Lark, Hunt’s motorcycle chase, Hunt running and jumping across rooftops, and the insane helicopter chase.

Tom Cruise going to absurd lengths to reach the TV remote.

It’s ridiculous (in a good way) how much room cinematographer Rob Hardy (Annihilation, Ex Machina) gives each sequence; these are scenes made for seeing and experiencing in IMAX. You can tell that the majority of the stunts were pulled off practically and green screens and computer generated effects are utilized minimally. The most impressive sequence is the motorcycle chase because Tom Cruise races through the wrong side of traffic without a helmet in the circle around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

But the helicopter chase features Cruise climbing up a rope dangling in the air while the helicopter is airborne. These sequences are extremely open with perspectives that not only make you feel like you’re with Tom Cruise being just as nuts and exhilarating as he is, but also seem to be making the statement that Cruise is still crazy enough to do the majority of his own stunts at the age of 56 despite his saggy jowls.

I know Sean Harris was in Prometheus, so let’s reuse those suits to jump out of an airplane.

Many on social media were claiming that Mission: Impossible – Fallout is nonstop action over its nearly 150-minute runtime, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. The film seems to be attempting this never ending adrenaline rush found within the likes of films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Speed, but it fails to do so. The action is superb, but everything in between is extraordinarily dull. Missing the first and third films in the franchise may have contributed to that, but there’s not much to miss here if you haven’t seen the other films in the franchise.

Hunt obviously still cares about his ex-wife Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan), but currently has a connection with Ilsa Faust. The spy element of the sequel feels so cliché and predictable as every twist and big reveal can easily be predicted even if this is your first Mission: Impossible film. The inclusion of a bomb in a Mission: Impossible film feels explosively juvenile at this point and you legitimately have no investment in these characters whatsoever.

Stay still. I’m going to try to save you. By shooting you.

With every Mission: Impossible film that’s released, it seems like its main purpose is for Tom Cruise to be like Mad TV’s Stuart and yell, “Look what I can do!” before partaking in extracurricular activities a man in his fifties should probably be distancing himself from. To be fair, Cruise is still more than capable of doing incredible action films and is generally a part of films that aim to be exciting for everyone.

Fallout is extraordinary if you scrutinize without any sort of context. The film knows how to make your pulse race and your palms sweat as you gasp for breath. But the story is the same as any other Mission: Impossible film and the sequel is basically dead as far as any sort of emotional acting goes. There’s no substance here and impressive action doesn’t make up for a defused storyline.

UFC 227: Dillashaw vs Garbrandt 2 Main Card Highlights & Predictions

0

Main Event: TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt 2 (UFC Bantamweight Title)

Betting Odds: Dillashaw -120 or 4/5, Garbrandt +108 or 1/1.

UFC 217 was one of the most memorable nights in recent memory with three championship fights on the same card all producing some sort of drama in one form or another, the title changed hands in each fight. The co-main event featured the two men headlining UFC 227 this Saturday night TJ Dillashaw & Cody Garbrandt.

TJ Dillashaw had won the Bantamweight title initially in 2014 defeating Renan Barao in spectacular fashion. After two successful defences, the returning former champion Dominick Cruz who was never beaten instead stripped of the title (through inactivity due to injuries) reclaimed the Bantamweight Championship edging a close split decision victory on his return.

Cruz fought Urijah Faber for the third time before being soundly beaten by Urijah’s teammate & top prospect Cody Garbrandt. Garbrandt vs Dillashaw was the obvious fight to make because TJ was also a member of Alpha male before things turned sour which ignited a feud between TJ and Team Alpha Male. The fight needed no extra promotion however, it was decided they would coach opposite teams on The Ultimate Fighter reality show. During the show, there were several altercations adding to the tension already present.

Garbrandt vs Dillashaw 1 Recap

The fight itself was as riveting as the heated exchanges we had witnessed previously on The Ultimate Fight show, Garbrandt carrying on the momentum of his superlative performance against Cruz started strong knocking down TJ Dillashaw in the closing seconds of round one.

TJ was clearly on unsteady legs, had the knockdown occurred 30 seconds earlier it may have been the end of the contest.

Dillashaw recovered by the beginning of the next round immediately answering back with a head kick.

UFC 227: Dillashaw vs Garbrandt 2 Main Card Preview with Predictions

The following minutes of the round played out like a game of cat and mouse, Grabrandt looking for a counter anticipating TJ would make a mistake in searching for the finish, TJ clearly looking to close the show with plenty of time still left in the round. As it happened they both found their moment exchanging hooks but ultimately Dillashaw landed the crucial punch which all but ended the fight.

UFC 227: Dillashaw vs Garbrandt 2 Main Card Preview with Predictions

Even after the fight had finished it was obvious the animosity between the two was still present.

UFC 227: Dillashaw vs Garbrandt 2 Main Card Preview with Predictions

TJ claimed in his post-fight interview he was sure the two would meet again, I’m certain he didn’t think it would be this soon.

Outside of the personal rivalry, the two are evenly matched in skill even though they have different styles. If they fought 10 times the fights could play out differently every time, that’s how little there is to split the two. If you were lucky enough to catch Robert Whittaker vs Yoel Romero 1 & 2 you would have noticed how the two fights were dissimilar to each other. The first was more of a tactical point scoring chess match the second was pure chaos, that’s the outcome you get when two equally skilled fighters have a chance to analyse a previous fight and adjust in a second encounter.

The point I’m trying to make is there’s no guarantee this fight will be a carbon copy of the first, whatever happens, it will be compelling viewing nonetheless. I’m expecting the type of fight that will challenge Whittaker vs Romero 2 for the best title fight of the year.

Co-Main Event: Demetrious Johnson vs Henry Cejudo 2 (UFC Flyweight Title)

Betting Odds: Johnson -494 or 2/11, Cejudo +435 or 4/1.

Another rematch on the card, the most dominant champion in UFC history Demetrious Johnson attempts to make the 12th defence of his title against former foe Henry Cejudo whom he handled with relative ease just over two years ago. An accumulation of knees to the midsection was enough to get the job done inside the opening round of the fight.

Challenging a champion is a question of timing in my opinion, you want to fight the champion at the right time, Cody Garbrandt catching Cruz at the tail end of his career after a catalogue of injuries is a perfect example of that, Cody may have beat Cruz in his prime but the variables were more favourable to Cody at the time they fought.

For Henry Cejudo the first title fight was too early. Cejudo hadn’t yet gained the experience required to seriously challenge Johnson, on top of inexperience Johnson was and still is very much in his prime. The timing was all wrong.

In the build-up to the first fight Cejudo was raw, the experience he needed to not beat Johnson but to understand what it would take to beat him he received during that defeat to the reigning Flyweight Champion. Unfortunately, that’s the most painful way to learn. This lead Cejudo to make some changes to his fighting style, add a few new elements to his game.

We’ve seen Cejudo since take a more risk-averse approach to his fights using more defensively sound striking whilst still sticking to his strengths when the situation requires it.

Against Wilson Reis, Cejudo displayed his new karate style movement which was very effective.

Against Sergio Pettis who is a more competent striker, Cejudo went back to his bread & butter using his superior wrestling to control the fight.

My biggest criticism of Cejudo is he fell in love with striking too much prior to his first title shot, getting involved in fights that didn’t necessarily suit his strengths. An Olympic gold medalist in wrestling should be using his wrestling as a weapon, in most cases a primary weapon. Henry Cejudo has the best chance of any current Flyweight contender to beat Demetrious Johnson because he is the only fighter in the division who has a huge skill superiority in one area, that being said Cejudo needs to apply it intelligently for that skill to be a factor.

Mighty Mouse is an expert in finding holes in opponents styles & he’ll be aware of Cejudo’s threats, the challenge for Cejudo is applying his strongest skill in a manner the champion isn’t prepared for, strategy is the key to Cejudo’s success in this fight which is something he’s definitely been working on.

Predictions

TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt (Dillashaw KO/TKO)

Demetrious Johnson vs Henry Cejudo (Johnson Decision)

Thiago Santos vs Kevin Holland (Santos KO/TKO)

Polyana Viana vs JJ Aldrich (Viana Submission)

Cub Swanson vs Renato Moicano (Swanson Decision)

Filing for Bankruptcy The Right Way

Filing for Bankruptcy The Right Way

Although young males generally have less debt than older people and women, this trend is starting to shift. There were 110,000 under 25s declaring bankruptcy last year and millennial men are more likely to default on student debt than their female counterparts. This is a concern, since under 25s often don’t own a house or have any other assets to fall back on. One way to deal with mounting debt is to effectively file for bankruptcy; the keyword being “effectively”. Doing so properly will allow you the cheapest and quickest route to getting on the right track with your finances.

Be Transparent

The quickest way to extend your bankruptcy, make it more expensive and risk legal action being taken against you is withholding information. Your trustee is responsible for gathering all the information they can about your income, debts and assets. If information is missing or incorrect, then the process will be lengthened and you could face a fine or prison sentence.

There’s no need to worry, however. Simply go through your finances and provide the information as accurately as possible. You may think that concealing assets will mean they can’t be taken away and sold to pay for debts. This is a very common crime, though, and it’s not worth the risk.

Don’t Take Up More Debt

Before you declare that you are bankrupt, you may be tempted to max out your credit card or take out a new loan. What’s the harm, right? You’ll need to explore the legal details of bankruptcy in your state, but taking out new debts before you declare bankruptcy is usually a crime. You are taking this step in order to not have to pay off debts, so taking out a new loan immediately before will suggest bad intentions on your part. As stated above, you won’t be able to hide your financial history. Try to pay off your debt rather than adding to it for a comfortable and speedy recovery.

Making a Comeback

Talking of recovery, there’s no need to feel depressed about declaring bankruptcy. If you follow the process properly and fulfill your obligations, it offers the chance for you to have a fresh start. Feel good about learning this hard life lesson early on and rebuild your life based on this new found wisdom. Once you’ve been through the difficult and complicated process of bankruptcy you won’t want to go back there. This offers an opportunity to live within your means and live a financially secure life as you get older.

If you have found yourself in debt that you can’t afford to repay, then bankruptcy might be the answer. This is your chance to do something properly and get yourself out of a bad situation. Remember that you’re not alone. There are over 100,000 other people your age in the same situation. Finances are hard, especially when you’re young. Just be completely honest about your assets, debts and income and you can’t go wrong. Think of this as a chance to have a life lesson and fresh start for a brighter future.

Millipede Madness – Scientists Confirm That Lemurs Like Getting High Too

0

Science has shown that human beings aren’t the only creatures that like to alter their mind from time to time. In the past, studies revealed that groups of young dolphins like to use pufferfish to get high, passing the fish around and lightly chewing them to release just enough secretions to give them a brain lift. Earlier this year documentary footage from Madagascar revealed another species that also makes use of mother nature to elevate when researchers recorded a group of lemurs munching on a particular species of millipede to gain access to their brain-changing effects.

Former Dr. Who actor David Tennant narrates as BBC cameras recorded the lit lemurs doing their deed, explaining that “the toxins cause the lemurs to salivate and they then rub both the saliva and millipede into their fur.” It isn’t all about drool and massages, however. Tennant goes on to tell viewers that “the chemicals also appear to send them into a trance-like state, a condition of complete intoxication – and they cannot seem to get enough.”

This lemur had a bit too hard of a hit on his millipede PC: BBC/Youtube screenshot

Before long, the primates are completely stoned, some barely able to keep their eyes open as the high takes over their body. They do need to be careful, however: those millipede secretions also contain the deadly poison known as cyanide, and just one hit too many can lead to a fatal overdose. As far as we can tell, however, the lemurs seem to know their limits and cautiously take little bites to control their intake.

The millipede secretions have another effect for the lemurs too: they work as a kind of insecticide, keeping other pesky insects from making a meal of the lemurs as they move through the jungle.

Surprisingly, the millipedes typically aren’t killed during the process either. After the lemurs bite into the creepy-crawlies just enough to elicit the chemical reaction they’re after the millipedes are let loose, content to wander the rainforest floor until they are grabbed by yet another trip-seeking lemur and the process begins all over again.

We can’t quite recommend going out and chewing on millipedes for your next high like these lemurs do, but then again who are we to judge? There are definitely stranger ways to get high out there, and maybe these lemurs might just be onto something! ….and maybe that explains a bunch about King Julien and his crew in Madagascar too…

I always thought there was something up with King Julien…

Lucky 757 Interview

7/23/2018, By: J.G. BennetLucky 757 is rockabilly and surf rock band from Portsmouth, VA.  They started in 2014 and released their third album, Lonesome Lagoon,  on 7/20/2018.  The album will be released on Scad Records. Lead guitarist, Corey Spivey, wielding a huge Gretsch hollow body guitar, alongside his dad and stalwart bandmates, is on a crusade to keep the sounds of surf rock alive.   It’s working.   Receiving international airplay, Lucky 757 continues to develop a unique sound and pay homage to great surf rock musicians from it’s halcyon days of longboards, go-go dancers in bikinis and, of course, tons of reverb on the guitars.

JG:  So, Corey, is there a lot of surfing in out in Virginia?

Corey: (Laughs)  Well, no, but in Virginia Bech you’ve the got the East Coast surfing championships, and a couple of us in the band surf.

JG:  What is it about surf rock that makes the music so steadfast?  It’s lasted so long, yet it still finds news fans and is still relevant some 80 years later. Why, in your opinion, is this the case?

Corey: I think it’s because a lot of it is instrumental. So, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, or what time it is, or what’s going on, or what language you speak.  It’s all instrumental, so you can get your message across with the music.  You say what you want to say with the guitars and all that.  That speaks to people. Even if there isn’t any singing, it can mean different things to different people, and that is universal.  People are just able to grasp on to that, and it never seems to get old.

JG: Surf rock generally has very strong, well defined, melodic statements, or “melodies” if you will.  Even if there are no lyrics, you can still identify, “Oh, that’s the melody.”

Corey: YES!  That was one of the hardest things to figure out about surf rock when it came to writing the songs. You can pick notes all day long, but to come up with a melody that’s memorable, and strong…. That’s the words!

JG: The lead guitar playing on Lonesome Lagoon is fantastic.  Not to slight the rest of the band, but you’re the one up front playing these cool guitar melodies.  Can you talk a little bit about how you developed your technique on guitar to perform these long, linear lines (melodies).

Corey:  I wanted a clean, distinct, sound that wouldn’t get it the way of the music around it.  I wanted every note that I played to stand out and be accounted for.  That way you could create a melody that people could sing in their heads, and you add some reverb and a whammy bar… Like all good surf music needs!  … and you’re pretty much there.  If you’ve got everything right with the guitars, and the amps and the reverb, and your mind is in the right place,  you can start to feel the whole “surf” thing.   I’ve always listened to this music, my whole life. It has a very strong influence on me.

JG: So you learned how to play by ear or more traditional music classes, or a combination?

Corey:  My dad taught me the basics of the guitar and some chords, but he doesn’t play lead guitar. I had to learn that by ear, listening to the records.   When I was nine years old, I got a copy of  The Ventures “Surfing” Album. It blew my mind!  I had to learn every note of the that record.  That record was pivotal in my development, and so was “The Best of Dick Dale”.

JG:  Let’s drill down some of your unique techniques.  You mentioned Dick Dale.  One of his signature guitar techniques is the rapid fire tremolo picking (Editors note – Tremelo is the art of strumming one note as fast as humanly possible.)  Yet, on Lonesome Lagoon, you don’t really do that.  Why the departure from that particular technique?

Corey:  Right.  I wanted to create a unique voice for our band, but still pay tribute to Dick Dale and those legends.  So, I went with a more linear, sustained type of approach.  I liked the way it sounded when I held the notes out longer and created a sustained kind of thing.  You know, I play a hollow body guitar, and that gives me a lot more natural feedback.   With that much sustaining power, it gave me reasons to not have to do the whole “tremolo picking” thing.  It also gives the melodies a singing quality to them.

JG:  By the way, with a doubt, Dick Dale is the loudest guitar player I have ever seen live! Metallica (James Hetfeild), Pantera (Dimebag), ZZ Top (Billy Gibbons), Dream Theater (John Petrucci)…  didn’t ever come close.  Dick Dale was BY FAR the loudest guitarist of all of them.

Corey: (Laughs) Yeah!  He’s the king of that!  He’s the Godfather!  Dick Dale created “LOUD”.  Way before any metal bad was doing it, he was doing it.

JG:  Getting back to your guitar techniques, you employ some very smooth double stop bends (Note: bending two or more guitar strings in unison on the guitar simulatainosly).  It’s kind of a dying art.  There aren’t a whole lot of modern guitar players who focus on this old school guitar skill.  How did you develop this technique?

Corey: That came a lot from the Rockabilly and Country side of things.  Players like Don Rich, James Burton, Cliff Gallup and The Ventures’ Nokie Edwards.  I was influenced by these guitar players.  I liked the sounds and the uniqueness of it, but it’s not something that you hear as much anymore and I wanted harken back to that sound.  I wondered where it wen and why people don’t do it as much anymore.  So, I tried to develop my style to be like that.

JG:  Back in the day and I’m talking about the period from about 1970’s-early 2000’s, Guitar Mags were huge.  That was where you went for all the information about guitar playing, from new tabs or what was happening with the scene.  We devoured those to learn how to play guitar, but with Internet era firmly here now, what advice would you give to a young guitar player now, in the year 2018?  How can they go about developing their musical chops and skills on guitar?

Corey: There is so much out there now, if you’re willing to do the research.  For example, if you want to learn surf guitar, you need to look up and listen to some of the stuff you want to play.  Im sure you can find TABS for that stuff, but mainly it’s developing your ear for the vocabulary of the style.  Watch videos of the greats playing it and really STUDY the music.  Put yourself deep into the music and take advice from other players that you respect.  Try to emulate the great musicians who have been doing this for years.  It’s a dying art.

Lucky 757 - Lonesome Lagoon - EDITED PRINTJG:  Let’s get back to the new album, Lonesome Lagoon.  What is the process that you as a band use to write and record the songs?  Can you describe the workflow that you use in the studio to record?

Corey: The actual title track, Lonesome Lagoon, we recorded 100% live, right off the floor in the studio.  All of the songs were written before we went in to record.  What we did for most of the album was to gather in the studio and play the song live together.  Then we would go back after that and tidy things up.  Sometimes we would only keep the drums, or other times we would keep everything, but the bass.  Basically, we tried to do as much as we could live and kept overdubs just for “seasoning”.   Certain things like the trumpet on Fernando or the sound effects on MONSTA!, we added later.  Sometimes I’d double track guitars or record acoustic guitars separately so we didn’t have any bleed from the drum mics.

JG:  So there wasn’t use of iso-booths?  You guys weren’t in separate rooms with headphones on?

Corey: Nope. We were all facing each other in one room, gathered around our drummer, Angel.  We did keep the amps a little further away from us and had headphones on to hear the mix, but we were all in the room together.

JG: Do you guys use click tracks to help record?

Corey: No, we don’t.  We let our drummer Angel handle it.  He’s the timekeeper, so he’s in charge of keeping us on the beat.

JG: Do you have a favorite track on the new record?  One where, when you listen to it, you say, “Thats Lucky 757!”

Corey:  Yes!  Spanish Shore. It’s the first song on the album and the first single being released.  But, it was actually the last song we wrote for the album. We were getting down to the wire and we needed one more song, and that one just kind of came out of nowhere.  We recorded it in couple of days, and it was done! When we do play a live show it is usually our opener, because it sums up the whole sound of Lucky 757.

JG: What does Spanish Shore mean to you?  Have you been to Spain? Is there a specific beach there you like to hang out at? …

Corey: No, I’ve never been to Spain, but there are some radio stations over there that play Lucky 757.  One of them is Rock Therapy Radio, over in Spain.   They were one of the first stations to play or music, and it happened only a few days after our music came out.  I didn’t even submit any music to them, and then one day I got an email from them stating that they were going to start playing our music on air, and they did.  So, we started writing some songs with them in mind.  Spanish Shores was one and Mar Agitado was another.  That means “rough seas” in Portuguese.

JG:  One person that you’ve cited in your bio is the famous Italian film, “Spaghetti Western” composer, Ennio Morricone.  He is a fantastic composer in his own right, and probably influenced more modern music than most people realize, and yet he just recently won his first Academy Award in 2016 for The Hateful Eight.  Could you talk for moment about Mr. Morricone’s influence on you and pop music in general?

Corey:  He created such a unique sound.  Anytime you hear a low, reverbed-out, baritone guitar, that’s straight outta’ his book.   Anytime you hear a really high pitched, Mariachi style trumpet; That’s Morricone. I find his style to be so unique and it set the tone for all those movies he did.  That’s whaat our song Fernando was written for.  It’s completely a dedication to him.  We had our buddy Damian come in and play the trumpet and I played the classical guitar at the beginning of the track.

JG: What message would you like to share with the world?

Corey:  I think everyone should support independent artists who make music like this, because it’s not dead.  If you look around you’ll find people playing rockabilly, or surf, or Americana, or Bluegrass, and all these types of musics.  Its time that these types of music shine again and people bring it back into the spotlight.

Oppai: An Ode to Jiggle Physics in Gaming

0

Boobs are great. Video games are great too. So when you take those titties and put them in a game? That’s a recipe for a grand old time. So today we’d like to take a minute to break down the history of boobs in games. An orientation to oppai. A jaunt with jiggle physics. A conversation with cans. A prance, with puppies. It’s time to talk tits.

Video game oppai
So what the hell is “oppai” anyways? Oh… Oppai is boobs. Awesome!

Oppai! Er, Opa!

We’ve all seen them in games. The one girl who has a bit more bounce than the rest. For many, the poster child, (more like centerfold) of the best breasts in gaming goes to Lara Croft. And who could blame you? I mean… look at those cannons. Well, they’re more like torpedos, but still! Many young men fantasized about those titillating triangles throughout their youths.

Mai Shiranui Jiggle Physics
That’ll distract you when fighting her…

And Japan made sure to say hi to oppai early on as well. Be it Ivy from Soul Caliber, Chun Li from Street Fighter, or Mai Shiranui from King of Fighters, Japan knows what’s up. In fact, many of the most famous (and infamous) examples of jiggle physics come from Japan. The aforementioned Mai Shiranui is the first documented case of jiggle physics in games in fact!

Gravity Defying Jiggle Physics

While everyone agrees boobs are awesome, some believe that they might be too awesome. Or at least, got to the point of ridiculousness. With Jiggle Physics reaching Jell-O like proportions with the bounces, everybody agreed that something needed to be done. After all, when your breasts begin to wobble in different directions, in and out… it’s just weird.

The most recent case of jiggle physics gone wrong (or right if you like oddly wobbly knockers) is Street Fighter V. Chun Li, ironically considered the best legs in video games, had her Jell-O tits going on. I mean seriously, just look at the one on the right. Capcom blamed the issue on a bug, patched it out, and went on with their lives. But the wiggly, jiggly memes live on to this day.

After the latest in a long line of unrealistic sweater puppies, everybody decided it was time to focus on the boobs. And focus on a little bit of realism. And thus born, was the Boob Jam. A game developer jam for creating realistic breast physics for games. (It might sound silly, but remember: Somebody spent a year working on the physics for Batman’s cape.) What became of it, was a bunch of wonderful, and downright weird games centered around breasts. Awesome.

Keeping Abreast with Things

Accusations of sexism aside, everybody knows jiggle physics are weird. Some argue it’s artistic, some will say it’s an affront to nature. Others just think they’re awesome. But there is no denying, that the world of digital D cups can get pretty weird. The greatest example of how weird (and creative) jiggle physics in games can be, is found on the Nintendo 64: Conker’s Bad Fur Day. In it this M rated platformer, you play a drinking, smoking, bad mouthed squirrel. And you use a Sunflower’s gigantic tits as a bouncing platform. Seriously, check it out.

Shit, the Dead or Alive Serious was taken hostage by their own ridiculous jiggle physics. What was once a decent fighting game series, became the punchline of gaming for the polygon puppies. As of today, they’re more known for their Beach Volleyball games than the actual fighting games. And when you say “Beach Volleyball” it really just means mindless tasks to do so you can look at them anime titties some more. Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer for the 2016 release of Xtreme 3.

From Oppai with Love

The future of boobs in games is as solid as most of your dicks are after watching these trailers. Video games continue to get weirder and weirder. And with that weirdness, comes an acceptance of the ridiculous. So it looks like big ol’ boobs on polygonal stick figures is here to stay. And the future looks exceptionally bright in the land of the rising sun. While their birth rate continues to drop in Japan, the cup sizes for their characters is only going up.

Allow me to introduce you to Senran Kagura.

If you really want to get your hands on a game that jiggles like gelatin in an earthquake, this series has your back. The game gives absolutely no fucks when it comes to realism. You got ninjas flying all over the place doing flips and shit wearing what amount to cloth bikinis. DDD breasts are the smallest they come in half the time. And they make sure to zoom wayyyyyyyyyyyy in for the glory shots. And the panty shots.

So if you need to get your daily dose of anime titties, we got you covered. Here’s the latest trailer for the upcoming Senran Kagura game.

Summary

So to summarize everything: Boobs are awesome. Let’s add more.

Lack of Motivation

Getting fired up when you don’t have a spark.

You’ve got stuff to do, but you just can’t seem to accomplish all of your objectives.  Or you won’t make the most pressing and urgent tasks a priority.  What difference does it make?  No matter the reason or excuse that you make, the end result is the same; what needs to be done, just isn’t getting done.  Here are some tips and tricks to help you light the inner fire and get motivated.

Removing distractions  (Taking something away)

Maybe the reason you aren’t achieving your maximum success is because something else is blocking you along the way.  Here’s a short list of what that could be:

  • You watch too much porn.
  • Drinking alcohol in excess.
  • You’re addicted to sports, video games, television, or texting.
  • You have too many projects going on at one time.
  • Sleep deprived.
  • In a bad relationship.
  • You may have overcommitted to multiple people, tasks or events.
  • Social Media fatigue.

Whatever it may be, it chips away at the available time and energy you have to focus on what you want to achieve.  Dr. Gary Wilson talks about the corroding effects of watching too much porn and masturbation.  There is strong scientific evidence that corroborates his conclusion that binging on porn creates a lack of motivation.

Have you ever heard this old joke?  I went on a liquid diet.  I didn’t lose any weight, but I lost three days. The point is clear; while consuming alcohol in moderation has been proven to have many benefits, over consumption of booze can and will greatly impair your skills.  Hangovers rob you of the the next day too.  It’s also a drain on your money.  If there was extra money in your bank account, that might be one less obstacle you would have to overcome to get motivated.  Cut back on the spirits if you can’t get motivated.

Like football, baseball, soccer?  Sure, who doesn’t?  That doesn’t mean you have to watch a game every single day or night.  Pick one night of the week to watch.  Youtube often has great edited videos of highlights from major sporting events that can save time.  An even better idea (which segues into the next section) is to skip the nachos and TV watching altogether.  Why not get up, get out and get your ass into the game!

Physiological GAINS!

Can’t seem to get motivated to get off the couch?  Try drinking a cup of black coffee or green tea.  A small dose of your favorite caffinated beverage not only stimulates the body, it can also perk up your mind.  Just like alcohol, don’t over do it.  Think about gravity; what goes up, must come down. If you drink too much caffeine, you run the risk of burning out and being even less motivated the next day.

Imagine you’re in a foot race.  You can sprint for a short time, or you can jog slowly for long distances.  Motivation is the same way.  Chugging a quadruple expresso will surely get your heart racing and your mind alert, but when the buzz wears off, you’re going to pay the price.  The speedster has it’s time and place, but often slow and steady (consistent) wins the race. Think about the tortoise and the hare.

Making some simple changes in your diet can also help you to get motivated.  The scope of that is too rich for this article, but there have been plenty of articles written on this subject.  Also, get some exercise outdoors you lazy fuck!  Sunshine and fresh air reduces stress, and can help you to get motivated to focus on whatever you need to get done.  Or, it may you make just want to talk to girls… which brings us to the next part.  SEX.

That’s right.  Sex.  Not the one handed jack hammer jive from watching porn, but actual intercourse and orgasm is a top notch stress reliever.  It can be frustrating when you lack the motivation to accomplish goals in your life.  Having a bed shaking orgasm not only gives you a great ego boost, the pleasurable sensation and confidence can jump start your motivation. So if you can’t get started on that project, maybe you need go reintroduce yourself to the Miss’ again.

Make a plan.

Let me say that again.  When you can’t get motivated… MAKE A PLAN! Next, write it down.  Use an old fashion pen or pencil on old fashion paper.  Legend has it some of the world’s greatest songs were written on cocktail napkins.  Avoid the temptation to type your plan onto your laptop or phone.  It could lead back to the first part on this list, distractions.  Make a plan by breaking your goal into small, achievable steps, write it down and start going to town on the list.  You’ll find that usually taking the first step is the hardest.

Have you ever been swimming and afraid to get into the water because you know it’s going to be cold?  Of course, most of us have.  We approach the edge of the pool.  Dipping our hand or toes into the water, confirms what our brain is telling us;  This water is cold and it will be unpleasant to get into the water.  So we hesitate. Our motivation is sapped from our willpower.  We try to ease into it.  Or…. you can swing yourself over the edge of the pool in one smooth motion, splash into the cold water, and within half a second your body commands to you get moving in order to heat up.  Suddenly, the water doesn’t feel bone chilling. In fact, it’s just the opposite. It feels refreshing.

Once you have your plan in place.  Don’t psyche yourself out by over complicating the first step.  Just take the plunge!  As any great military general will tell you, plans rarely work out the way they were intended too.  You must adjust and adapt your plan… but that can only happen once you start working the plan!

Find a mentor

Colonel Trautman mentors Rambo while they fight in Afghanistan, Rambo III
Even Rambo had a mentor. Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna) mentors Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) while they fight in Afghanistan in Rambo III.

There have been lots of of successful people in history.  If you lack motivation, why not look to one of them for inspiration?  Regardless of your personal beliefs, there are mentors that you can model yourself after.  Each of them found a source of motivation within themselves and you can too.  Read or listen to a famous speech.  Study a masterpiece of art.  Blast ‘Gonna Fly Now‘ from the Rocky movies… what ever it takes.

To recap; remove distractions, try some physiological changes, make a plan and find a mentor.  So you lack motivation?  No big deal.  You can easily break out of this slump and do one small task. One small step leads to another, and another and another.  The next thing you know, you may have built the Great Wall or made an important discovery.  You can get motivated.

If you followed these steps and they worked for you let us know in the comments below.  Thanks for reading!

UFC 226: Miocic vs Cormier Preview & Predictions

0

Main Event: Stipe Miocic vs Daniel Cormier (UFC Heavyweight Title)

Betting odds: Miocic -220 or 2/5, Cormier +245 or 2/1.

UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic & UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier were in similar predicaments in their previous title defences facing younger fighters who were coming off of multiple impressive knockout finishes. They managed to see off their respective challenges and as a result, Cormier is moving up to fight for the heavyweight title. Daniel “DC” Cormier has not relinquished the light heavyweight title which means he has the opportunity to hold two belts simultaneously.

Stipe Miocic had struggled to gain the respect that previous champions like Cain Velasquez & Junior Dos Santos once had up until he defeated Francis Ngannou. Ngannou was the slight favourite going into the fight despite his lack of experience but Miocic showed that it would take more than just raw power and strength to take his place at the top of the heap at 265lbs. Francis Ngannou threw the kitchen sink at Miocic to no avail, the champion slipped and ducked himself out of harm’s way just long enough to exhaust the bigger man before dominating the rest of the fight.

Daniel Cormier is a completely different proposition altogether, what Cormier lacks in size and power he more than makes up for with his polished skill set. With Cormier moving up to heavyweight he immediately becomes the most well-rounded fighter in the division, he can stand with world class strikers he can wrestle with the best grapplers there’s simply no area that Cormier is obviously deficient in.

Volkan Oezdemir found that out the hard way when he attempted to take Cormier out in the first round of their fight, Cormier withstood the early pressure eventually taking the fight to the mat where Oezdemir was clearly outmatched. From that position, it was all one-way traffic.

This may look like a massive risk on paper for Cormier going up to a division that stretches from 205lbs to 265lbs however, this isn’t Cormier’s first taste of competing at Heavyweight. Cormier is the former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion who held a record of 13-0 as a heavyweight before dropping down to 205lbs to steer clear of any conflict of interest with fellow stablemate Cain Velasquez.

Cormier was cut short of his run towards the 265lb title in 2013 so it seems fitting he finally gets a crack now that he’s coming to the final stages of his career. Stipe already has more title defences than any other heavyweight in UFC history, another successful defence would be the icing on the cake.

A win for either guy would be the most significant of their career albeit for different reasons.

Co-Main Event: Max Holloway vs Brian Ortega (UFC Featherweight Title)

Betting odds: Holloway -170 or 4/7, Ortega +160 or 6/4.

Not all of the title fights over the last few years have been worthy of high praise both on paper or in action, this particular fight title or no title is one of the best match-ups UFC could have made this year. The ingredients required to produce a memorable fight go beyond having two recognised names and putting them together on a big show it has more to do with styles. Holloway & Ortega possess complementary styles the likes of which contain the ingredients for a fight of the year candidate.

The current champion Max Holloway dethroned the most dominant featherweight champion there’s ever been with back to back stoppage victories.

His record is littered with names of former champions and he’s only 26 years of age. You’d have to go back to 2013 to find his last defeat against Conor McGregor since that loss Holloway has won 12 straight including big names like the aforementioned Jose Aldo, Cub Swanson, & Anthony Pettis. Holloway is as active a fighter you’re likely to see, he lands 6.20 significant strikes per minute (FightMetric) drowning top quality strikers in kicks and punches which can sometimes result in wild moments like this.

Max Holloway is a big featherweight he is larger than the majority of the fighters in the division which gives him a slight advantage when matching up with most featherweights, that won’t be the case against Brian Ortega who is a similar size, Ortega will be giving away a 3-inch height advantage but the reach is identical.

On top of being closely matched in size, Ortega is one of the best finishers currently competing in MMA. Whether it’s on the feet or on the ground, down on the scorecards against the clock Ortega finds ways to finish fights even against fighters who have a reputation of being difficult to put away.

Holloway is more of a fighter who plays the long game, he gets his nose in front and looks to build on that with his work rate and volume if you can’t keep up he’ll look to get you out, he doesn’t often take unnecessary chances until he feels there’s minimal danger offered by the opponent, a more cerebral type of fighter. During Holloway’s 12 fight win streak he’s lost only a handful of rounds.

Ortega’s game isn’t built around mounting a lead or scoring points he’s working an angle to score a home run by finishing the fight, the emphasis on that is most likely why he’s so good at it. There’s no element of luck involved he’s shown in multiple scenarios how he can finish a fight in an instant.

Five rounds is a long time to find a finish considering before now in 7 fights with the UFC (one no contest) he’s found a way to finish the fight every time in just three rounds.

The contrasting styles, in this case, is what makes this fight enticing. When you have a fighter like Holloway who attempts to control every round the perfect antidote is someone who doesn’t play that game of tag, this is why Johnny Hendricks was an intriguing opponent for Georges St-Pierre and why TJ Dillashaw vs Demtrious Johnson is an exciting potential match up. The possibilities for how this contest could play out are almost endless.

Francis Ngannou vs Derrick Lewis

Betting odds: Ngannou -320 or 3/10, Lewis +299 or 5/2.

The perfect warm-up for two title fights, a heavyweight contest between two knockout artists.

Ngannou failed in his attempt to claim the heavyweight title from Stipe Miocic back in January, 6 months later he attempts to continue his prior run of devastating finishes, the last victim was, of course, Alistair Overeem.

For the owner of the hardest punch ever recorded time is of the essence, Ngannou who started MMA late is 31 years old with glaring holes still present in his game, he can’t afford another slip up in the octagon if he wants to be the star he was promoted with the intention of becoming.

Derrick Lewis can also end a fight in the blink of an eye, he may not have the same visually athletic appearance as his July 7th opponent but he moves deceptively fast.

Lewis hasn’t yet competed for the title, he was on course for a title fight until a loss against Mark Hunt set him back, a victory over Ngannou in a relatively weak division would put him right back in contention.

Two big heavyweights with knockout power who have had issues with stamina in the past, is this fight going the distance? I’d be extremely surprised if we see the second round.

Predictions

Stipe Miocic vs Daniel Cormier (Cormier by Decision)

Max Holloway vs Brian Ortega (Ortega by Submission)

Francis Ngannou vs Derrick Lewis (Ngannou by KO/TKO)

Michael Chiesa vs Anthony Pettis (Chiesa by Decision)

Gokhan Saki vs Khalil Rountree (Saki by KO/TKO)
