Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury Preview & Prediction

0

The seeds for this fight were sown over two years ago when Tyson Fury confronted Wilder after his third defence of the WBC Heavyweight Title.

This altercation occurred two months after Tyson Fury had upset the odds to dethrone longtime champion Wladimir Klitschko, the only belt Fury wasn’t holding at the time was the one Wilder captured a few months later (WBC Title) which gives you an idea of why Fury was going after Deontay Wilder.

In the meantime, Wladimir Klitschko invoked his right to a rematch. The fight was initially scheduled to take place in July of 2016, the contest was rescheduled to September after Fury sustained an injury during training camp, a positive drug test and subsequent ban for Fury ensured the rematch never took place.

Recently the self-proclaimed “Gypsy King” revealed Fury contemplated committing suicide during his struggles, battling his way through depression & weight gain Fury has managed to find his way back to Boxing. With no Wladimir Klitschko who has since retired, there are no rematch clauses to honour which means Wilder is the obvious choice for Fury’s first big fight since becoming Heavyweight Champion.

Tyson Fury has had two fights this year against opponents he would have beaten with one arm three years ago. The purpose of these fights was to work Fury back into action slowly after the hurdles he’s had to overcome these past few years. Fury was successful in both fights but a far cry from the best version of himself.

If Fury is to defeat Wilder he needs to be a lot sharper than what we’ve seen since his return, at his best he’s a problem for any heavyweight due to his size and mobility.

When breaking down what Tyson Fury does well it’s hard to isolate a remarkable skill, he moves well for a man his size, he’s got fantastic conditioning, the thing he does best is neutralising opponents, especially their strengths.

Wladimir Klitschko fell victim to Fury’s game. Klitschko was a strong favourite, nothing Fury had done prior to his first world title fight gave me any confidence he could win. Fury’s been knocked down by smaller guys, not known as a big puncher I couldn’t see a clear route to victory.

In what was the most uneventful Heavyweight Title fight in modern times Fury defeated Klitschko by doing just a little bit more than his Ukranian counterpart, the size was an issue for Klitschko & it looked as if Wladimir underestimated Fury’s movement.

Klitschko looked like a rabbit in the headlights for 10 rounds before realising he needed a knockout to win at which point it was already too late.

1st

In a nutshell, Tyson Fury’s most effective weapon is his unpredictability, nobody knows which version of Fury will turn up on December 1st, including Deontay Wilder.

Now if Tyson Fury is a jack of all trades without having a speciality then Wilder is the opposite, he’s the master of one.

The hardest puncher in the world, possibly one of the hardest punchers ever, Wilder is a legitimate knockout artist with thunderous power, there’s a variety of ways to stop a fight without actually separating a man from his consciousness but Wilder is only interested in finishing the fight emphatically.

When Wilder hits men they don’t just fall they crumble, some have taken minutes to come back around.

A consistent criticism of Wilder is that he’s technically weak, occasionally leaving his feet when throwing punches other times swinging wildly, however, no man has ever found a way to avoid his power thus far. The only man to take Wilder the distance (Bermane Stiverne) was knocked out in the rematch.

Wilder vs Fury is a classic boxer vs puncher match up. The strategy on paper going in is abundantly clear, Wilder will be doing the hunting & Fury will be laying the traps.

The biggest question is, which version of Tyson Fury will turn up? he’s not just been inactive he’s been overweight & struggling with his mental health. Can he ever be the same fighter he was three years ago?. Nobody really knows it’s an impossible thing to estimate.

Conventional Wisdom would say an athlete has a limited amount of miles before the body starts showing signs of decline, what we can’t measure is if Fury has used up all his good miles in the time he’s been away.

If Tyson Fury does win it’ll be one of the greatest comeback stories in the history of sports & his legacy will be unquestionable, beating Wladimir Klitschko in his home country against the odds, defeating Wilder after three years off. Even Fury’s biggest critics would struggle to deny the magnitude of difficulty in beating those two men under the circumstances surrounding both fights.

Prediction

Deontay Wilder wins by KO/TKO between rounds 4-6.

Girl of the Week Emi Ray

Slickster Magazine: What advice can you give to young women to stay in good shape for modeling?

Emi: This is a tough one! Honestly, I struggle with staying in good shape/being healthy due to my busy lifestyle. One thing I always try to do is drink green tea in the mornings. I hear it’s very good for your metabolism. Do your best in avoiding too much carbs. Oh, and try cooking healthy dishes at home! I used to eat out constantly, but when I started cooking more at home, I dropped almost 10 lbs in a year and noticed residual fat loss around my tummy area. Exercise is my weak spot, but I try to do little things once in a while like keep myself moving around the house or parking farther away to force myself to walk more (lol). It’s hard when we have such a busy schedule, but you can do it! 🙂

Does that advice help build confidence when you are in front of the camera?
Not really. I think you just have to feel it (confidence). When I model, I am also acting. And when I act, I am showing a small piece of myself that has been tucked neatly away inside my mind that comes out when I want it to. You don’t need to be skinny/super fit to exude sexiness or confidence in front of a camera. But at the same time, you need to feel that strong confidence in yourself in order to model well in front of the camera. It helps a lot if you have come to terms with your body.

Let's move on to dating... Social media is huge in many people's lives now.  Is it ok to stay friends with an ex on Facebook?

It depends on the kind of person you and your ex are. Personally, I dropped him because being friends with him wasn't allowing me to grow as a person. Some people are best friends with their exes and receive a lot of support from them. So I say do whatever is comfortable for you, but if all you feel is negativity, you might have to reevaluate your friendship with the ex.

Is there anything you’d like to promote to your fans?
Yes! I just recently set up a store for my modeling prints. I’m really excited because this is my first time doing this.

What is the most important message you'd like to share with the world?

Body positivity. It's hard when we live in a world where women have to fulfill certain beauty standards in order to gain their sense of worth. Confidence comes within, not on the outside, and You're beautiful with or without cosmetic surgery and/or photoshop!

Road Redemption Review

Title by Pixel Dash Studios and EQ-Games

Unfamiliar Carnage

Screen 1 by Pixel Dash Studios and EQ-Games

I have not played any versions of Electronic Arts’ Road Rash in my lifetime. Road Redemption on Nintendo Switch, the bloody child of EQ Games and Pixel Dash Studios, was my call to this action genre. The idea of wild motorcyclists battling on rebellious roads, with intent to kill, is not a new idea. Video games have been a dominant form of entertainment since the 1970s. The motorcycle combat genre has been around as long. Previous versions, in this game genre, have never drawn me in.

Sega Genesis’ version of Road Rash did not look fun, in my opinion. The great intentions of the game and the graphics never caught up to each other. I recall 3DO’s version of Road Rash. The game had a photo realistic look for the time, but was not the full experience you can have today. The more recent Maximum Games’ Road Rage was not on my list of games to play. It is motorcycle combat with the look of Grand Theft Auto. Road Redemption looks to offer the newest great experience in motorcycle combat on Nintendo Switch.

Rules and Redemption

Screen 2 by Pixel Dash Studios and EQ-Games

Road Redemption follows you as you “lead your motorcycle gang on an epic journey across the country” in driving combat. Earn money by completing races, assassinations, robberies, and other challenges in your path. You collect loot; upgrade your character, your bike, and your weapons. The game offers a campaign.

This allows players, up to four in co-op mode, to travel across country to complete a variety of missions and defeat various enemies along the way. Classic Quick Play mode allows players to race over various terrains for the best time, scores, and upgrades. There is an online mode. You simply connect to a server and battle against enemies along an endless highway of challenges.

Power Steering

Screen 3 by Pixel Dash Studios and EQ-Games

Players can use either the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or the Nintendo Switch “dog bone” controller, The Switch’s controller that you attach your Joy-cons to, to play this game. Players maneuver their motorcycle with the analog stick. The ZR button allows players to boost and accelerate their bike. The ZL button allows players to brake, or reverse their bike. The X and Y buttons allows players to attack enemies on their right, or left.

The A button is a kick to knock enemies off the track, or into other enemies. The B button allows players to deflect enemy attacks. The R button allows players to grab enemies on their bikes, or shoot at them if you have guns, or other projectile weapons. The L button allows players to look behind them for enemies. The cross pad allows players to select weapons they acquire throughout the game, such as a sword or an Uzi. The lower analog stick on the controller activates jump jets for your motorcycle. It allows you to launch over, or on, enemies, and over chasms in the game.

The Easy Route

Screen 4 by Pixel Dash Studios and EQ-Games

Road Redemption has a deep control system. In the end, the game’s success comes with its simple purpose. The game takes place on a number of wicked roads. There are a number of different road types, a variety of enemies, and level challenges. Players’ access and play on these roads influences this game experience. Players control their motorcycle in the best way on these roads.

The controls in Road Redemption are tight. Snowy roads can give any vehicle difficulty, in any game. However, pinpoint controls permit players to navigate, or crash, on these roads based on their game play experience, or in experience. As the difficulty levels increase in this game, Road Redemption can become more dangerous. Success in this game still comes down to how well you personally learn the controls in this game.

Road Redemption also has a rogue-lite experience. The game, in campaign mode, allows you to upgrade your character in one lengthy campaign. If you die, in any part of this campaign, you re-start at the beginning of the game, but keep your series of upgrades for your character in future replays.

Screen 5 by Pixel Dash Studios and EQ-Games

These upgrades include a variety of projectile weapons, strength, and boost upgrades for your character, and motorcycle. The multiplayer options in this game work. More players on this road only add more calamities to the already epic violence in the game.

Road Redemption’s decent three-dimensional style translates well in portable mode, and on the television. In the end, the major critique of this game could be its visual style on Nintendo Switch. This, however, does not take away from the pure carnage, tire burns, and explosions you can experience in this visceral title.

Conclusion

Road Redemption’s origins started on Kickstarter. The game pays homage to Electronic Art’s Road Rash. The fact is a game where you can take pipe, while on a motorcycle, and knock opponents, at high speeds, to the road is awesome. In the end, this is a racing title.

The racing aspects do not overwhelm the violence. Players can race to the finish of levels, or rain down on enemies on their way to the finish line. Road Redemption is a flexible game that celebrates violence, but favors the player who knows how to race. It deserves time on your Nintendo Switch.

UFC 231: Holloway vs Ortega Main Card Preview with Predictions

0

Main Event: Max Holloway (C) vs Brian Ortega (UFC Featherweight Championship)

There are only a few months left before the year comes to an end but make no mistake two of the year’s best match-ups have yet to be contested.

Jon Jones & Alexander Gustafsson resume their rivalry on December 29th, before they close the show on 2018 the new breed of mixed martial artists get their time to shine when the reigning UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway meets the undefeated Brian Ortega.

Holloway’s last loss was in 2013 to Conor McGregor by decision, since then he’s won 12 straight including 9 finishes, two of which against former Champion Jose Aldo who is widely considered the greatest featherweight of all time.

The first fight earned Holloway the Undisputed Featherweight Title.

The second fight 6 months later was Holloway’s first and currently only title defence.

Life at the top hasn’t been smooth sailing for Holloway who’s suffered injuries and health complications which have kept him inactive all year. This fight with Ortega was set to take place on July 7th earlier this year, Holloway was pulled out 3 days prior to the event with concussion-like symptoms during the weight cutting process.

Three months earlier Holloway offered to replace Tony Ferguson when he pulled out of his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. Even though Holloway had less than an ideal timeframe to make weight it was deemed possible because Holloway usually competes at 145lbs so the weight cut to 155lbs was expected to be easier. The doctor supervising was concerned with Holloway’s condition which meant he was declared unfit to compete before he had even attempted to make weight.

The 145lb weight division has seen a seen a transition in recent years, with Jose Aldo out of the picture & Conor McGregor permanently campaigning as a Lightweight it’s given the younger talent a chance to break through. Zabit Magomedsharipov has taken the division by storm, Yair Rodriguez reminded the world of his capabilities this past weekend.

UFC 231: Holloway vs Ortega Preview with Predictions

The challenger Brian Ortega is another exciting young talent at 145lbs, besides the champion, he’s been the form fighter of the division since Jose Aldo’s long reign came to an end.

Ortega has a remarkable ability to finish, he’s had 7 fights in the UFC & he’s finished them all (One later overturned to a no contest). More often than not fighters with high finish rates win most of their fights early, Ortega is an anomaly because 4 of his 7 finishes have come in the third round, a few occasions he’s been down on the scorecards, however, still managed to get the victory against the clock.

He’s a pupil of Rener Gracie so it should come as no surprise to hear that Ortega is a wizard at locking up submissions, he exploits the smallest of opportunities to submit opponents before they can even think about how to defend a position.

UFC 231: Holloway vs Ortega Preview with Predictions

His two stand out moments for me were the KO of Clay Guida with 20 seconds left till the final bell,

UFC 231: Holloway vs Ortega Preview with Predictions

and his latest win over former UFC Champion Frankie Edgar.

Edgar had never been stopped despite facing lethal strikers in the past, he was finished for the first time by none other than Brian Ortega in the opening round.

UFC 231: Holloway vs Ortega Preview with Predictions

The two names who stand out amongst the rest at 145lbs are Max Holloway & the challenger Brian Ortega, you can see why this fight has so much anticipation around it, they both have an even chance of winning (at least on paper).

Picking a winner is difficult but that’s also what makes it intriguing. Though Max Holloway’s concussion symptoms kept this fight from happening at UFC 226, sites like SBD still have him as a slight favourite over Brian Ortega.

Don’t expect fireworks at the press conference, these two prefer to do their talking in the octagon. Holloway & Ortega represent the traditional spirit of a Mixed Martial Artists, respectful conduct outside the octagon, fiercely competitive inside of it.

Co-Main: Valentina Shevchenko vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk (Womens UFC Flyweight Championship)

Two women who have recently decided to change weight classes, Valentina Shevchenko is moving down to a weight she’s more physically suited too & Joanna is moving up making her weight cut which has troubled her the past few years more comfortable.

The similarities don’t end there, Valentina & Joanna are both former Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Championship Gold Medalists. They competed against each other three times prior to taking up MMA, Shevchenko came out on top every time.

A lot has changed since those fights, MMA, of course, is a whole different ballgame. There are a few variables which didn’t apply to the previous encounters, however, you’d be crazy to think the previous fights will have no bearing mentally on both women coming into this fight.

Setbacks in title fights have plagued these ladies, lucky for them they get another chance to claim gold in the newly introduced Women’s Flyweight division, the division has only ever had one champion but Nicco Montano was stripped without ever making a defence of the title.

This is a fresh chance to write history in a weight class with a blank page, the losses to Amanda Nunes & Rose Namajunas will be quickly forgotten if either Valentina or Joanna go on to have a solid run as champion at flyweight.

Predictions

Max Holloway vs Brian Ortega (Ortega by Submission)

Valentina Shevchenko vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk (Shevchenko by Decision)

Alex Oliveira vs Gunnar Nelson (Nelson by Submission)

Hakeem Dawodu vs Kyle Bochniak (Dawodu by Decision)

Jimi Manuwa vs Thiago Santos (Manuwa KO/TKO)

Baldocaster- Synthwave’s musical ambassador for the moon

0

baldocaster---Moonrise-Album-Cover-1440

The retro electronic synthwave music scene struggles with a unique dilemma.  Whereas in the days of the past, musical creation was most often created by individuals melding together into a (sometimes) cohesive unit, that is no longer required.  In the advent of recording technology, both analog and digital, as well as drum machines, vastly improved sampling software, and the vast sharing of information, solo electronic artists flourish.  Herein lies the conundrum of synthwave.  How can art that is born in the sterile labs of homemade digital studios make the organic transition to love performance and/or collaborations?

Baldocaster is a UK born, but American raised musician that is excited about his debut album on Lazerdisc Records.  Moonrise will be available for purchase in mid-November.  While not really a “stocking stuffer” it will, however, stuff your eardrums with massive synthwave/outrun/vaporwave tracks, ample amounts of Cosmos-focused themes, and top notch production values.  We caught up with Baldocaster and chatted about his musical upbringing, Carl Sagan, his synthwave collaborations and whole lot more.  The results were often funny, insightful and up-lifting.

Slickster Magazine – First of all, thanks for sharing your new music with us at Slickster Magazine. We’ve enjoyed listening to it. I want to give you a blank slate before we jump into the meat of the interview.  Is there anything that you’d like to clarify from previous interviews, anything written online that is half true or misinformed, or basically, is there anything you want to talk about in regards to your music and artistic career?

Baldocaster – I’m not aware of any slanderous words out there about me… yet ಠ_ಠ. It’s been a long road through various avenues of music creation and I’m happy to finally be releasing music that I’m proud of and feels like me.

Baldocaster synthwave Interview 03
Baldocaster is an American synthwave composer releasing his debut album ‘Moonrise’ on Lazerdisc Records.

You relocated across the Atlantic to settle into the United States of America.  What were your major considerations in making this move? Sick of mushy peas, or British birds driving you up a wall?  Or something more sinister?

I moved here in 2000 when I was a wee lad of 10, and Fatboy Slim & yo-yos were all the rage. My parents made the decision for me, but I’d like to believe something VERY sinister was afoot. They did break the news of the move to us at a Burger King, and my brother had a meltdown. So there’s that haha.

Baldocaster synthwave Interview 02

Can you describe the arc of your musical career, that brings us to this point; The release of Moonrise in November 2018.  Where did you get your start crafting chords and melodies? Did you begin with guitar, like many synthwave musicians did or was it something else.  Would like to share a bit of your musical background?

I did start with the guitar. I’ve always been really into the blues and folk stuff like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Nick Drake etc. but also melodic electronic music like Daft Punk, Justice, Tangerine Dream & Jean-Michel Jarre. I played in a couple of progressive rock bands through my college years while I was in music/recording school. I think those years really helped me focus my writing and arranging. Some of the old school Rush/King Crimson-y prog rock weirdness and extravagance is probably still evident in a lot of my stuff.

I like to take one or two musical ideas and present them in lots of different ways that flow together and interpolate. I had been aware of synthwave for years but coming from more traditional production and instruments into the electronic world always seemed like too much of a rabbit hole to dive down. Eventually, after discovering Waveshaper, I saw how this retro synth music could be fused with all of the other stuff I love like French House and Jarre. Then I drove up to NYC to buy an old Roland Juno-60 off of craigslist and it all began. I worked on a few singles while I was figuring out my sound. Then once I had honed in on a direction, I locked myself away for 3 months and wrote this album!

Baldocaster synthwave Interview 01

That’s awesome.  Knowing all of that now, what advice can you impart to our up and coming musicians who read this?  How can young electronic musicians, or any musicians for that matter, improve their skills?

For me the most growth has always come from loving and diving deep into lots of music, and spending unhealthy amounts of time listening & creating. I place heavy importance on enjoyable and memorable melodies and interesting groove changes contributing to songs. I’m continually stepping back and thinking about songwriting and how impactful the overall arc of each song is.

Sometimes it seems like producing is a series of brick walls and plateaus that can only be broken through by making music over and over again no matter what. Time and passion. Also, I think the best artists in any genre don’t exist in a bubble and only draw from that genre – they get influence from all kinds of disparate stuff!

Baldocaster synthwave Interview 04

Moonrise; That’s a special time of the 24 hour biological cycle.  It conjures images of creepy crawlers and the nocturnal activities. That’s not a negative thing exactly, but it does emote a uniqueness.  When the sun goes down, people, animals, and the Earth does undergo physiological and mental changes. Some are emboldened. Many seek the safety and security of their dormitories.  However, as the title suggests in context with other track names on the album, you have a different perspective on the term “moon rise”. What does it mean to you and how did you place that into context with overall concept of the LP?

I don’t want to say it’s a concept LP, because I don’t consider it one. However, in the song titles there’s definitely a loose idea of some sort of sun cult that garners the wrath of the moon. I want to leave a lot of that up to interpretation. But at the same time I don’t take it too seriously haha. The artist Aleksey Rico definitely did an awesome job with the idea I gave him for the cover artwork.

Are you fan of Carl Sagan, and have you watched his recently published “lost lecture” on mankind and its place in the universe?

I have not seen that! I’m somewhat familiar with Sagan – people are always telling me I need to check out Cosmos and his books out. So maybe I’ll go do that now…
On your record you have three collaborations with other synthwave artists. Those individuals include Caspro (Station X), Stilz (Blood Moon) and Zayaz (Sputnik).  How did these remixes come about and what was it like working with them? Did you sit side-by-side at a digital workstation, or were they given tracks via Dropbox and handed the keys to the kingdom to alter your compositions at will?

Caspro is my absolute best synth buddy, we talk daily, so that collaboration started very naturally. We’re always shooting ideas and snippets that we’re working on to each other. He sent me an outline of some of the chords with the bass and skeleton of a drum part. Then I wrote all of the other parts and melodies, drum fills, etc. around that. After I’d fleshed out the song structure, I left the bridge section with just a new chord progression for him to add his awesome “Top Gun” lead as we called it. He is incredible at writing leads and melodies, and doing everything really. I think he made a lot of the intro swells and noises too.

For the remixes, Stilz & Zayaz are two heroes of mine in the scene (both Canadian.) [Check out Stilz’s full interview with Slickster Magazine.] I had chatted with them a bit and timidly asked if they’d be interested in remixing a song for me. They were both very kind and knocked it out of the park. I basically sent them all the parts of those songs and let them do whatever they wanted. They’re both good buddies of mine now too, and I worked on a remix for Stilz in return. For Caspro’s remix he saw a clip of what I was working on for the song “Here on Earth” and DEMANDED that he remix it hahaha. So glad he did because it’s an awesome version.

Thanks for talking with Slickster Magazine.  Is there anything you’d like to discuss or promote to your fans or fans who have yet to discover your music?

I did a remix for my hero Waveshaper on his recent “Lost Shapes Reinvented” album that I’m super proud of. But really everybody needs to check out Caspro, Stilz and Zayaz music if they haven’t already! Also Tonebox who helped me out tons with the mixing, mastering and feedback. His music is fantastic as well.

Baldocaster synthwave Interview 05

Last item;  What is the most important message that you want to share with the world right now?

Be good to each other 🙂 AND RESPECT THE MOON!

Overlord Review: Take Two Injections and Heil Hitler in the Morning

0

On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), an American paratrooper squad intends to target and destroy a German radio tower located in an old French church, but their plane is shot down before they arrive. The squad is nearly wiped out with Cpl. Ford (Wyatt Russell, Everybody Wants Some!!), Pvt. Boyce (Jovan Adepo, Fences), Tibbet (John Magaro, The Big Short), and Chase (Iain De Caestecker, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as the only survivors. They encounter a French civilian named Chloe (Mathilde Ollivier) and her 8-year-old brother Paul (Gianny Taufer) and learn that Chloe’s aunt is now horribly mutilated thanks to Nazi experiments occurring in the church. Boyce is able to sneak into the church unnoticed only to witness the nasty results of the horrific Nazi testing behind the church walls that mostly revolve around a vibrant serum that is capable of bringing soldiers back from the dead in a much more ferocious capacity.

Whether you end up enjoying Overlord or not, there’s no denying that it should be seen in IMAX. The war horror film is so incredibly loud and with J. J. Abrams being involved you can’t help but reminisce about how Super 8 completely conquered and utilized sound quality to its biggest advantage. Overlord opens with what is perhaps its most iconic sequence. That plane being ripped from the sky is so massively intense that your heart will begin to race and you’ll be breathing so hard that you think you’ll be hyperventilating. Everything being so noisy results in you feeling absolutely everything in your seat over the course of the film; the roaring airplane engines, deadly gunfire, nonstop explosions, and (later on in the film) heavy creaks in wooden floorboards. The sequence caps off with an impressive and dizzying free fall parachute sequence followed by the debilitating feeling of nearly drowning in submerging waters.

Wafner (Pilou Asbaek) is confident in his hot dog eating contest skills.

The film follows this up with a few other scenes that nearly live up to that glorious white-knuckled opening; Boyce injecting the serum into one of his own and attempting to outrun the devastation left behind by a detonated bomb while he’s still within the effects of the blast. The special effects, gore sequences, and the Nazi church experiments are Overlord’s other horror highlights.  Wafner’s (Pilou Asbaek, Ghost in the Shell) bloody grin from the trailer where he’s missing a chunk of his face is an image that hauntingly shell-shocks your brain into remembering it forever. Boyce dreadfully discovering the disgusting results of Nazi experimentation capitalizes on the thrill of wandering around and attempting to survive in horror survival video games like Outlast and any classic monster or body horror cult film with practical effects.

The acting doesn’t go far enough to make a long-lasting impression. Jovan Adepo has this John Boyega quality to him, but is still in the polishing stages. Adepo is able to portray fear and panic to a masterful degree, but you simply don’t care about what he does when he opens his mouth. Wyatt Russell is a one-dimensional leader in the sense that he yells a lot and barks orders, but his character is fairly flat otherwise. John Magaro talks nonstop as Tibbet with his ability to rip on everyone else in his unit being his defining quality until he drops it for no good reason halfway through the film. Magaro talks trash about everyone, especially Boyce, but he becomes more and more soft as the violence and danger reach catastrophic levels.

Boyce (Jovan Adepo) doesn’t remember Creepy Crawlers being so vomit inducing.

Overlord spends a lot of time showcasing how impulsive and sympathetic Boyce is. It feels like over the course of the film Boyce is supposed to mature as a character, but he mostly acts on spontaneous urges without any planning or logic behind his actions and never changes that even by the end of the film. Why the film allows so many references to Chase’s photography hobby, Boyce’s pointless lucky charm, or Paul’s fascination with baseball is also a bit baffling since none of these little details lead to much of anything. How many times does Boyce need to be blown up anyway?

Overlord is a visual and audible ecstasy for horror fans. The film adds an even deeper layer of horror to what was already one of the most devastating wars in human history. The intense action sequences are jaw dropping and Overlord will likely be viewed as an explosive crowd-pleaser. However, the paper thin characters and stale acting leaves a lot to be desired. Overlord probably has more in common with 28 Days Later than the average zombie film since these aren’t zombies, but you should definitely look into the Dead Snow films if Nazi zombies are what you crave or Frankenstein’s Army if you want your World War II experimentation to be more like a steampunk version of Re-Animator.

Zero Call “Fears And Dreams Of Living Machines” Album Review

Zero Call - Fears And Dreams Of Living Machines LP_1400x1400

Zero Call “Fears And Dreams Of Living Machines” Album Review

JST Records released the first of it’s catalog for Zero Call on October 29th, 2018.  Italian composer Andrea P. is an electronic musician and live musical artist.  The latter is significant to note as, many within the Synthwave/Retrowave, Cyberpunk, Electronica genre never take the music away from the comfort of their digital workstations.

When asked where he draws inspiration from, “Zero Call was born from the need to communicate, through Electronic music, the social contradictions of the past and anxieties (with the new album) of the new century”, says Andrea P.  While this is artistically vague and filled with creative type word salad speech, Andrea P. further elaborates…

In 2018 capitalism is about to be replaced by the greatest disruption of all time. Soon 10 billion humans will all live in mid-low class and make slaves of technology. The Living Machines will serve man from birth to be able to map every possible value: health status, tendencies, resistances, intelligence or not, tolerance to frustration or orders.

The largest corporations will use this data to understand what stimulus to give and who; who to cure and who to not. To do this they use the most advanced technologies, artificial intelligence and hardware of unimaginable performance, to implement the most massive and monstrous mass control project in history.  ©JST Records, 2018

Fears And Dreams Of Living Machines

FADOLM fits nicely into the modern synthwave scene.  On a side note, JST Records has artists of higher caliber on its roster. Zero Call is one them.  Whereas, some record labels will produce and release anything (or anyone who pays to play) JST has a higher integrity standard when gauging the caliber of their artists.  Again, I would consider Zero Call one of the assets and the music that Andrea P. is composing/producing definitely is worthy of listening to and purchasing.

The album is comprised of ten tracks.  Nine of these ten, I get a kick out of and one which almost always triggers me to immediately skip it.  (More on that later)  The album has a wonderful flow and consistency throughout that lends its support the “concept album” feel.  While the cyber-punk “tech slaves” motif in the genre is becoming somewhat stale IMO, it could also be a reflection of the reality of it in modern society.  For example, I’m getting ads populated on my Instagram for fully automated security robots.  What was once a cruel plot for D-grade movies (Chopping Mall) or a flashpoint for “Skynet becoming self aware” remarks, is genuinely becoming a reality.  It’s hard not to conjure images of Bladerunner (Vangelis in the original movie and Hans Zimmer in the sequel) when listening FADOLM.

Zero Call_Press 01

Lack of vocal imagination

One of my biggest gripes about FADOLM is the lack of inspiration when it comes to the vocals.  Synthwave can stand on its own legs as instrumental music, but the addition of vocal melodies does bring a fresh flavor to the aural palette or sink the record outright.  For most of FADOLM, the vocals add to the mix and benefit the listener’s experience.  However, remember that track I always skip?  This is the reason why.

Track three, “Living Machines” incorporates repetition in the vocal line that kills the song for me.  After hearing a “It doesn’t matter really matter where you are” with no changes to pitch or inflection repeated over and over, I find myself saying, “Couldn’t you have tried a little harder on this?”  The opening to Living Machines uses the same type of repetition among the instruments (as does the album and the genre for that matter), but this lack of vocal imagination is where I draw the line.  A quick glance at the playlist count for FADOLM tells the whole story.  Later in the album on Track #9, Tech Addiction is guilty of the same flaw.  Even incorporating vocoder in the vocal line, “We know you’ll be satisfied,” it quickly dulls the ear and prompts me to lose attention.

Zero Call playlist screen shot

In a stark contrast to tracks 3 and 9, track five, “Faster” utilizes an overdubbed speech clip.  I’m not sure who the public speaker is, but his voice has such power, natural inflection and unique phrases that it immediately jumps out at me.  In some ways, despite not having a definable melodic curve, it seems more musical than the repeated phrases previously mentioned.  I’m guessing what the speaker will say next, and how he will say it.  I would like to hear vocal lines inspired by this imperfect, human, organic vocal qualities in upcoming Zero Call works.

Zero Call_Live 01

Minimalist but not predictable

I appreciate the oft subdued elements of this record.  Whereas some synthwave albums of less skilled composers beat the listener over the head with cliché after cliché, FADOLM takes a more subtle approach. There are massive soundscapes of sustained, gorgeous keyboard pads and timbral waves of electronic ecstasy.  These are the kind of planetarium wet dreams, where my ear (and soul) is happy to come along for the ride, and imagine I’m traveling across a barren, yet romantic wasteland of an android filled future.  Zero Call is a master at combing all multitudes of sonic layers together, that you can’t hear all of them on the first, second or even fifth listening.  Each new listening brings out some iota of understated morsel of electronic goodness.

Even though many of the musical phrases are symmetrical and chord progressions are decidedly diatonic, there is enough variety to keep me engaged through the entire album.   One of the signs that I notice among composers of the genre is that, their initial forays into Synthwave is marked by “playing it safe”.  I have strong hunch that as Zero Call continues to develop his own unique sound and craft he is going to make daring and experimental choices in his music.  I look forward to this and seeing what surprises he can conjure up on his future albums.

GARAGE: Bad Trip Review

GARAGE, Bad Trip, Zombie
Not someone I’d want knocking on my door saying Trick or Treat…

GARAGE: Bad Trip Review

Written by Jonathan Lee, October 29, 2018, 8:00pm. Tweet to: @Writerscube

I don’t think it’ll ever get old. Blasting the crap out of hordes of zombies, taking on the apocalypse, and facing monstrously gross bosses. But what can get old is HOW you go about the journey of taking on the zombie apocalypse. Normally, you’re some military-trained expert or some really smart person who’s plunged into the zombiefest with barely a clue, but still smart enough to figure some really cool solution.

A Bad (Good) Trip Down Zombie Lane

GARAGE, Bad Trip, Zombies, Undead, Need a Weapon
There was a sweet relief to finding my first gun. It’s too bad that relief disappears quick when you run out of ammo!

But then enter GARAGE: Bad Trip, and the first thing you’ll notice is that this isn’t your normal zombie apocalypse story. You’re not some Chris Redfield, you can’t just punch boulders to victory. You’re not the size of a walking fridge with the muscles of the Hulk. You’re not even Lee from Telltale Games’s The Walking Dead, who was a normal guy but he had the smarts and guts to figure things out and bring together a group of estranged individuals.

Nope, you’re just an average Joe who wakes up in the trunk of a crashed car in the middle of the world gone to Hell. You don’t get special friends to swoop in to save you. You don’t have high powered martial arts gimmicks to save you. Until you find a gun, it’s just you, an axe, and your feet to carry you (and kick zombies with!)

And that makes it pretty great! There’s a constant desperation that you can feel for your protagonist while also still having the space to relish every zombie kill. GARAGE: Bad Trip is a really fun top-down shooter that keeps you on your toes while giving you all the varieties of undead to bash, shoot, and explode.

WHAT’S IN THE GAME

GARAGE: Bad Trip is a top-down action shooter, created by the developers at Zombie Dynamics. The control setup is typical for games of this type, and for both veterans and newbies, it is very easy to pick up and play.

GARAGE, Bad Trip, Undead, Motorcycle Sequence
Vroom-Vroom, you undead scum!

A lot of zombie games, even when they’re designated as survival horror, tend to give you a good amount of different means to dispatch your undead foes. But even when I got later in the game, I found myself spending up quite a fair bit of my ammunition. Which is an excellent decision on developer Zombie Dynamics’s part. This makes for excellent pacing with the tension through gameplay, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

And the game offers variety to keep the players on their toes. One moment I was trudging through wreckage and empty corridors, the next I was riding a motorcycle, running over zombies. Then I was in a burning subway. Past the zombie chaff that you’ll be blasting your way through, there are some gnarly big fights that you’ll be finding yourself. And of course, there’s a human military element to tackle. They too were fun to fight.

FINAL THOUGHTS

GARAGE: Bad Trip is a great way to blast off into a weekend. It’s entertaining and the visual characterization done gives the storytelling an impressive boost. The graphics are done in a visual style that flirts with retro while still bringing something fresh (and bloodily meaty) to the table. And you won’t find yourself bored while you take on the undead. The challenge stays with you, regardless of what new armaments come your way. With that said, I highly recommend fans of blasting undead and top-down shooters to give this game a try! You can find it on Steam right now for $14.99 (Pssst, there’s a 50% off deal right now if you get it by Noon of November 1st!) It’s the perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season too!

UFC 230: Cormier vs Lewis Main Card Preview & Predictions

0

UFC 230 was without a main event fight for months, fans speculated Jon Jones could be the guy to headline the card which didn’t end up happening.

The UFC announced Valentina Shevchenko would fight against relatively unknown Sijara Eubanks for the vacant women’s Flyweight Title. The decision was met with criticism, after two years of blockbuster main events this one seemed underwhelming to say the least. A few weeks later after Derrick Lewis’s memorable knockout & post-fight interview, it was decided he would challenge Daniel Cormier for the Heavyweight Title instead.

There have been numerous changes to this main card. Nate Diaz vs Dustin Poirier was removed, Shevchenko vs Eubanks was replaced, Luke Rockhold vs Chris Weidman was changed to Jacare Souza vs Weidman (due to an injury), David Branch who was slated to face Jacare is now fighting Jared Cannonier. It looks almost a completely different card to the one we expected a month ago. Nevertheless, there are still some great fights to look forward to.

Main Event: Daniel Cormier (C) vs Derrick Lewis (UFC Heavyweight Title)

Betting Odds: Cormier -555 or 1/7, Lewis +559 or 5/1

Of all the fights being rumoured to fill the main event slot at MSG this one had to be the most wildcard of bets, Jones vs Gustaffson, TJ Dillashaw vs Henry Cejudo, & Woodley vs Covington were some credible contenders even moving the now cancelled Poirier vs Diaz to a five round fight was a good suggestion. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought Cormier and Lewis would be headlining this card, now it is, I’m 100% on board with it.

Cormier became only the second simultaneous two-weight UFC champion back in July when he knocked out the most successful Heavyweight Champion of all time inside of the first round,

if Cormier is successful in his defence at MSG he will become the only fighter to defend a title whilst holding two at the same time.

I feel Cormier doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s only ever lost to one guy, a guy who is often referred to on pure ability as the best ever, the first fight with Jones was competitive, the second was clouded with controversy after Jones’s failed drug test.

It’s too often forgotten Cormier has 3 defences of the light heavyweight title, he took out Anthony “Rumble” Johnson twice, a man who many believed could be a stylistic nightmare for Jon Jones. Cormier defeated Alexander Gustafsson who gave Jones the hardest fight of his career & Cormier also took a fight on short notice against Anderson Silva (Due to another PED violation for Jones), a situation where Cormier had far more to lose than gain.

After all that Cormier goes up a weight division to fight Stipe Miocic, a weight division covering 60lbs top to bottom, that in itself makes the jump in weight more difficult than any other. To put it into perspective the same weight separates 5 divisions in the UFC, from the featherweight division to the light heavyweight division.

Derrick Lewis isn’t the best fighter Daniel Cormier has come up against, the knockout threat, however, is the most lethal of any former opponent. Lewis has knocked out big heavyweights in his career, couple that with the weight advantage which will be significant on the night. If I had to guess I’d say Lewis will be 30lbs heavier on the night minimum.

Derrick Lewis has one way and only one way to win this fight, hit a home run, now usually that’s a desperate play but Lewis has done it on multiple occasions.

There’s no doubt that until the fight is over Derrick Lewis is always one punch away from winning, never mind the circumstances, never mind the opponent. Daniel Cormier has a serious fight on his hands.

Co-Main: Chris Weidman vs Jacare Souza

Betting Odds: Weidman -170 or 10/17, Jacare +164 or 7/5

Chris Weidman has had the most turbulent career in modern history, he went from being the man who stopped Anderson Silva’s legendary run as champion to suffering three consecutive stoppage losses. Weidman was on the verge of being cut before rescuing his place on the roster by defeating Kelvin Gastelum in July of 2017.

Gastelum has since defeated Michael Bisping & Jacare Souza whilst Weidman has been recovering from a surgery to his thumb. Kelvin Gastelum will now challenge Robert Whittaker for the Middleweight Title which sends Weidman back towards the pack of middleweight contenders.

When Weidman became champion at 29 years old he looked to be the man to beat at 185lbs, after two defences he was dethroned by Luke Rockhold. The middleweight division is so competitive right now you can go from being undefeated to suffering back to back losses in no time at all, that’s the story of Chris Weidman.

Jacare was involved in a title eliminator with Kelvin Gastelum earlier this year which he lost via split decision by the narrowest of margins. Jacare is an instinctive finisher with knockout power, he’s also one of the most decorated Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world.

The last memorable victory was the devastating knockout of rising contender Derek Brunson.

Weidman & Jacare have managed to avoid one another despite being so closely positioned in the rankings for years, a fresh match-up in the division that keeps producing great fights, what’s not to like?.

Derek Brunson vs Israel Adesanya

Betting Odds: Brunson +280 or 5/2, Adesanya -278 or 3/10

These two gentlemen don’t like each other one bit, this became glaringly obvious during the UFC’s 25th-anniversary press conference.

I’ve been critical of the fight chosen to open a main card in the past, with this card they got it right.

Israel Adesanya brings some quality creative striking to the table,

he’s been carefully matched up to now & this is his first big step up.

Derek Brunson has only lost to the elite of the division since joining the UFC, Yoel Romero, Anderson Silva, Robert Whittaker, & Jacare Souza. This contest will act as a measure of Adesanya’s level, Brunson is no pushover but if Adesanya wants to come good on his word to “bury the division” he needs a good showing at UFC 230.

For Brunson this is a chance to slide under the radar, all eyes are on Adesanya to look the part, Brunson can go into this fight with minimal pressure or expectation.

It’s worth mentioning that during his fight with current champion Robert Whittaker, Brunson was a few punches away from victory before Whittaker rallied, on his day, Brunson is a genuine threat to anyone.

Predictions

Daniel Cormier vs Derrick Lewis (Cormier via Submission)

Chris Weidman vs Jacare Souza (Weidman via Decision)

David Branch vs Jared Cannonier (Branch via Decision)

Karl Roberson vs Jack Marshman (Roberson KO/TKO)

Derek Brunson vs Israel Adesanya (Adesanya Decision)

Hottest College Football Cheerleading Squads of 2018

0

College football season is in full swing, and if any of you have been watching the games you’ve definitely noticed those gorgeous girls bouncing around on the sidelines pumping up the crowd. So, we’ve decided to help you out here and compiled a nice little list of the 11 hottest cheerleading squads this year, you can thank us later!

11 – FAU

Florida Atlantic University’s cheerleaders don’t only turn heads on the field, but they have been wowing judges off it as well. The cheer team won the Intercollegiate Cheerleading Championship back in 2016, and has been a competitive force in the game year after year with their well-choreographed routines and crowd-awing acrobatics.

10 – University of Miami

The girls cheering for Miami are just nice to look at, but they are talented too! So talented, in fact, that there are more ex-Hurricanes cheering in the NFL than any other school in the nation.

9 – Florida State University

Those are some seriously sexy Seminoles! The ladies over at FSU have had quite an exciting few years for these past few seasons, cheering on one of the best teams in the country. But each year they’ve done their jobs spectacularly, even managing to draw our eye away from the game a few times. Tough to do when you’ve got talent like Jameis Winston on the gridiron, but these girls have the moves to turn heads for sure!

8 – Arizona State

Those Sundevil girls are hot, hot, hot! ASU has a reputation for a party school, and just watching these girls hope around the field let’s you know that they sure do know how to have fun!

7- TCU

The TCU Horned Frog ladies dazzle the crowds in their sexy little cowboy boots and short skirts, and each and every one of them is hotter than the Texas sun, catching the attention of even the most bored spectator.

6 – University of Florida

Them Gator-gals got it goin on! The ladies from Gainesville certainly know how to keep the attention of a crowd, and are out there in the Swamp week after week helping to cheer their team on to victory.

5 – University of Southern California

The girls at the University of Southern California have that old school, classy/hot look in their turtlenecks and traditional 1950’s looking cheer skirts. If you ask me, I say those sweaters only add to the allure of these ladies, leaving a little bit of a mystery for the fans out there.

4 – UNLV

Los Vegas is a mecca for sexy women, and UNLV certainly attracts its fair share of beauties. As you might expect from a school based in sin city, UNLV boasts some of the sexiest cheerleaders around

3- University of Oregon

The University of Oregon consistently ranks as having the hottest cheerleaders year after year, and their routine can be so sexy that just a few years ago some folks on the school’s board of trustees tried to permanently. do away with the team. Luckily for Pac-12 fans and aficionados of hot girls everywhere, cooler heads prevailed and the team can now be seen shaking what they’ve got every Saturday during football season.

2 – UCLA

Los Angeles is a city well known for beautiful women, so it only makes sense that their team is loaded full of certified smoke shows as well. And to add to their sex appeal, the UCLA cheer team is well known for their acrobatics and aerial splits, highlighting the flexibility of all of their team members.

1 – Universtiy of South Carolina

There’s just something special about watching a batch of sexy southern girls running around a field yelling “Go Cocks!” isn’t there? And while the Gamecocks might not be the best team in the SEC, their cheerleaders certainly win the championship in our minds every Saturday that they take the field.

10 must-follow rules for guys at the gym

10 must-follow rules for guys at the gym

Now that summer is nearly over, many guys who like exercising outdoors are heading back inside to get away from inclement weather.  Its a good time to refresh some etiquette for the gym.  Here is a list of ten rules that every guy who goes to the gym needs to do.  Which ones do you already do?  Which ones do you need to work on?

1. Always bring a padlock.

It doesn’t matter how safe your neighborhood gym is.  If you don’t lock up your belongings, you asking for trouble. Most petty theft are “crimes of opportunity”.  That means, someone sees your new iPhone sitting on the top shelf of your locker and then you close the door and walk away.  All he has to do is go over, open the door an walkout with your new $1,000 dollar phone.  It’s your fault. Even a cheap $3 dollar Masterlock is better than nothing.

master lock for gym locker

2. Keep the padlock locked and shut when not using it.

Following up on #1, when you are not using your lock, keep it locked.  That will force you to remember the combination code or find the key before you secure your bag, equipment, wallet, jewelry, etc… There’s a reason they keep bolt cutters on-hand at gyms.  Keeping your padlock locked will reinforce the secret code in your mind.

3. On the gym floor, work your muscles, not your mouth.

Despite what your grandma told you, the sun doesn’t revolve around you.  Unless you’re the Terminator, Arnold Schawzenegger himself, no one cares what you have to talk about.  Besides, if you can hold a normal conversation while exercising (esp. cardio) you’re not working hard enough.  S.T.F.U. and get to work!

4. ….Work your body, not the mirror in front of you.

Did you come to flex in front of the mirror, or lift weights? We all want to look and feel better about our bodies. It’s part of why we go to the gym in the first place, but save the flexing for the privacy of your own bathroom.  If you spend more time looking at yourself in the mirror than focusing on your form, you are prioritizing narcissistic impulses instead of having a kick ass workout.  Still can’t stop from looking? Take the mirrors off the wall if you can.

Arnold flexing in front of the mirror

5. ….Work your endurance, not your phone.

Are you seeing a pattern yet?  One of the worst (and most annoying) things someone can do at the gym is bring their phone on the workout floor. It distracts them from getting results and can interrupt others around them.  Taking selfies in the gym is lame, and even more lame is monopolizing a piece of equipment while you update your Instagram page or send a text message.  It can wait!  What can’t wait is the line of other guys who want and need to use the lat pulldown or cable crossover machine.  Leave your phone in your locker and keep it locked up.

6. Learn to recognize when a girl wants to be approached and when they do not.

This is a tough one, because many big box fitness centers can become meat markets during peak hours.  You know how it goes, at 5:30pm the gym floods with every single bachelor and bachelorette. They arrive from their desk jobs and have the dual mission objective of burning off stress, calories from donuts in the break room, and checking out the equal and opposite sex. It’s primal behavior distilled into one modern mating ritual.

Guys must learn to read the body language of ladies in the gym.  For example, if she is brave enough to leave the safety of the treadmill and use freeweights, she has headphones on, and is wearing no makeup to speak of…. she wants to be left alone.  She didn’t ask you to spot her, doesn’t want your critique of her form, and isn’t interested in you at all.  (*See The Terminator exception from Rule #3) Leave her alone and you might win her respect if she sees you consistently matching her intensity during exercise sessions.

On the other hand, maybe she is violating Rule #5 and snapping selfies for Snapchat the entire time she is in the gym.  Her makeup is done to perfection and she keeps initating conversation with you when you step on the elliptical trainer.  This is your cue to engage in casual, funny chat, and set a time or place to continue talking to her outside of the gym.  Remember, what you say and do right here is going to depend if you get stuck into her “friend zone” or her “F**k zone”.  Play your cards rights and you could be hooking up with a girl you already know takes good care of her body.

Talking to girls at the gym

7. Keep the nudity in the locker room to a bare minimum.

Gyms are dirty. Sweat, chlorine, blood, and grease are just a few of the things you need to wash off your skin after a heavy workout.  Nudity in the locker room is inevitable, but doesn’t have to be gratuitous.  We’re not saying that you need to dress inside your clothes, but don’t be the guy who stands butt ass naked at the sink shaving for 20 mins.  Then, wearing only flip-flops, he walks over to the lockers and lets his nut sack hangout with the carefree spirit of an forest elf.  Workout, shower, dress and get out.  They gym isn’t your whole life, it’s just a part of it.  Besides, if you took care of business in Rule #6, the flirty girl on the cardio equipment might be waiting for you at the juice bar for a post-workout date.

8. Be sure to use the water slide or diving board at least once per lap swim session.

When we grow up, we tend to lose the part of ourselves that didn’t care about anything but having fun.  Which young kid chooses to lap swim over doing backflips off the diving board or ripping down the water slide?  The answer is none.  But being an adult has it’s advantages too, like drinking with your buds till 2 a.m. and still going to work the next day hungover as fuck!  That being said, once you finish a hard core 1500 meter master swim, make the effort to reconnect with the kid in you by having just a little fun.  Try it once and watch what happens… Once you, the mature adult, jumps off the diving board into a massive cannonball, see if other grownups don’t follow suit.  We all like being a kid again, even if it’s just for a second.

9 . Don’t talk politics in the locker room.

I covered this extensively in a full blog post.  You can read the entire post here: Locker Room Politics – Do’s and Don’ts (Mostly Don’ts)

10. Learn the first name of everyone at the front desk and use it to greet them when you arrive and leave.

This simple business practice will pay dividends in the long run.  Not only will you get better service, you may even get some fringe benefits.  Here’s an example; One time a gym I was a member had had a pipe burst and flood the entire floor.  They had to shut down for two weeks and we couldn’t get in.  I had greeted all the front desk staff by name for months straight, and when the gym finally reopened, instead of getting pissed off at the employees, I walked in and said hello again.  Most members only got the two weeks tacked on to their memberships for the weeks they missed.  I got two months extra without even asking for it.  Never underestimate the power of using someone’s name by memory and saying a genuine hello to them.  This rule applies in life, business, and the gym too.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

0

1. Derrick Lewis’s Last Minute Finish

Down on all the cards heading into the final 30 seconds of the fight Lewis had no choice but to throw all his eggs into one basket, we’ve seen many fighters go for broke late in a contest, rarely does it ever pay off. Derrick Lewis nailed the hail mary play in dramatic fashion.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

Fan favourite Lewis sent the crowd into a frenzy which would set the pace for things to come. The Black Beast has had his share of injury troubles but he’s 13-2 in the UFC with 10 of those wins coming by way of knockout. The win on Saturday marks two wins on the bounce against highly respected contenders, Derrick Lewis is now fighting Daniel Cormier for the Heavyweight Title at Madison Square Garden on November 3rd.

2. Derrick Lewis’s Post Fight Interview

Punching power isn’t the only attribute Lewis is gifted with, he also has a funny side which is best displayed on his Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/thebeastufc/?hl=en.

Derrick Lewis has managed to gain a big following on social media throughout his career owing mostly to his humorous personality, all his social media sites received a huge boost following UFC 229 and it had nothing to do with his athletic performance. He’s got a reputation for pushing the boundaries during his post-fight interviews, UFC 229 might have been his best work yet.

Take a look for yourself.

3. The Fight of The Night Bloodbath

On paper, Tony Ferguson vs Anthony Pettis looked like a potential classic, it did not disappoint. The fight had a little bit of everything, Ferguson looked to be down and out when Anthony Pettis had him wobbling around the octagon.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

Ferguson would rally to land some elbows which caused a cut on the top of Pettis’s head, the ensuing blood gave the fight an extra visual stimulus with both fighters painted in crimson adding to the drama. Ultimately Ferguson started to gain control towards the end of the second round.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

Pettis also suffered a fracture to his right hand sometime during the second, upon receiving this news on the stool between rounds 2 and 3 Pettis’s coach Duke Rufous made the decision to withdraw his fighter from the contest to save him further damage. The fight was waived off & an emotional Tony Ferguson was reduced to tears following the most troublesome year in his professional career.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

In October of 2017, Ferguson defeated Kevin Lee to claim the Interim Lightweight Title, he was scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov to crown an Undisputed Champion, however, weeks before the fight Ferguson had a freak accident tripping over some loose wire in a media studio which caused a ligament tear in his right knee.

Unable to compete Ferguson was stripped of his title & the Undisputed Championship was contested without his involvement. This fight against Pettis was Ferguson’s shot at redemption, now he is once again the rightful contender to the belt his longtime rival Khabib Nurmagomedov currently holds.

4. Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Performance

Even though Khabib was 26-0 entering UFC 229 there were still some doubters who claimed he hadn’t been tested enough by the higher ranked fighters in the 155lb weight division. It was a fair criticism, the stage was set for Khabib to finally set the record straight.

A fight which seemed somewhat even on paper with both guys excelling in each other’s weak areas (I analysed this in my preview which can be found here http://www.slickstermagazine.com/ufc-229-khabib-mcgregor-highlights-predictions/) turned out to be another brutally dominant victory for Khabib. He was surprisingly calm when striking, even managing to score the only knockdown of the fight.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

In these big fights you get a true sense of a fighters quality, Khabib looked comfortable under the bright lights, his decision making was perfect he managed to execute his gameplan without running into any trouble at all. The only bit of bad news for Khabib is his record of not losing a single round in the UFC was ended when McGregor edged the third on the official cards, his streak ended at 31 only two short of the all-time record of 33 rounds held by Georges St-Pierre.

Excluding the third round, it was a familiar pattern for a Khabib Nurmagomedov fight. Takedown, smash, repeat.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

McGregor had fired some personal insults at Khabib in the run-up to this fight, mocking his faith & questioning his father’s integrity. It was all fun and games as per usual for McGregor, Khabib made him pay for every unsavoury word spoken. McGregor’s suffering was finally ended when Khabib submitted him with an adapted neck crank, crushing Mcgregor’s jaw under the pressure of his squeeze.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

The statistics speak for themselves when evaluating Khabib’s dominant run in the UFC, http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Khabib-Nurmagomedov. Onwards and upwards for the eagle of Dagestan.

5. The Brawl After the Main Event

The biggest talking point to come out of UFC 229 was, of course, the post-fight melee between first Khabib and a member of McGregor’s team (Dillon Danis) and then a few members of Khabib’s team swarming Conor in the Octagon.

It all kicked off when Danis exchanged words with Khabib from outside the cage immediately after the fight had finished, khabib then jumped over the cage and attempted a flying stomp, the two had a brief scuffle before being separated by security.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

Whilst this was going on McGregor was isolated inside the cage, it looked as if he attempted to punch one of Khabib’s cornermen (20-second mark in the video below) who was trying to get closer to the altercation between Khabib and Danis. McGregor was then confronted by the man he attempted to punch as well as another one of Khabib’s team members who appeared to punch McGregor from behind.

https://youtu.be/GG0EsWvUEi4

Everyone was escorted safely into the back except for Khabib Nurmagomedov, he was adamant the belt ceremony should still be completed. Dana White was concerned the act would incite a bad reaction from the crowd, possibly ending with crowd members throwing objects towards the octagon, endangering the safety of the people seated ringside.

Khabib eventually softened his stance, he was the last man to leave the octagon.

5 Reasons Why UFC 229 Was a Night to Remember

I have watched every single UFC pay-per-view event since UFC 71, this is the first time anything like this has ever happened at a UFC event. As soon as Khabib scaled the cage there was an instant feeling of something bad was about to happen. Dana White who is the president of the UFC was understandably upset with what happened, I don’t entirely agree that it was all bad press for the company.

The incident is definitely a bad example for young martial artists in respects to conduct, it also compromises the UFC’s reputation concerning the crowd’s safety during events.

Did it not bring added publicity to the event though? I am certain there are people who didn’t buy the card but upon finding out what happened searched for videos of the post-fight scenes. Is it so different to the UFC using footage of the bus attack which injured two fighters as part of the promotion for Khabib vs McGregor?.

If there are going to be no boundaries set by the UFC in terms of what can be said and done during the build-up for a fight then it’s going to be difficult to contain the consequences that come with that, we are dealing with let’s not forget the most elite level of fighters on the planet.

If you look at the type of video clips that go viral most of it is comprised of outlandish behaviour and contentious comments. The numbers don’t lie, controversy creates public interest, this was billed as “The Biggest UFC Event of All Time” and it turned out to be true just not for the reason many people expected it to.

How Warhammer: Chaosbane Can Improve Games Workshop’s Action RPGs

What Warhammer: Chaosbane Can Learn From Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr

Written by Jonathan Lee, 10:00pm, September 27, 2018. Tweet to: @WritersCube

Riding on the winds of Chaos comes Games Workshop’s next attempt at the third-person ARPG genre, this time set in the fantasy-based world of Warhammer Fantasy. Since the initial announcement back in June, a gameplay trailer for Warhammer: Chaosbane has come out this month to help tease what’s to come.

What Do We Know So Far About Warhammer: Chaosbane?

First thing’s first, the setting takes place in the old world of Warhammer Fantasy (before it became the current Age of Sigmar). The story takes place in the aftermath of Archaeon the Everchosen getting his butt whooped and the world thinking it’s been saved. But the forces of Chaos are eternal. And they are also really damn persistent. And it’s time to kick their butts back to the warp-spawned hole they came from.

So what characters do we get to play as? So far, the trailer has revealed that we have a fighter-type represented by a soldier of the Empire. Our spot for ranged magic caster is taken up by a High Elf mage, which isn’t surprising given the High Elves and their knack for magic, dragons, and their ongoing quest to stem the tides of Chaos to protect their lands.

And fans of Warhammer Fantasy video games will notice a very familiar foe. The forces of Chaos, particularly of the Chaos God Nurgle, the god of disease and decay. The forces of Nurgle were a terrible foe that one had to face in the first-person co-op bloodfest known as Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and that was very well-executed! But that’s not the only place we’ve been seeing the tendrils of Nurgle lurking about. In fact, the spawn of Nurgle were plodding about in a recent ARPG that Games Workshop had churned out through the developers at NeocoreGames. While the game was entertaining enough, my eager foray into that title found a few parts of the game wanting.

What We’re Hoping For…

I’m hoping they may learn from both the good and the bad. With luck, the developers at Eko Software have been paying attention to the reception of NeocoreGames’s 41st millennium-based game, and have been working to make sure they don’t make the same stumbles, while also paying attention to what Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr did right. Without further ado, let’s dive into what made Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr work and didn’t work, and see what we hope to have in Warhammer: Chaosbane.

Inquisitor Martyr, Warhammer 40,000, Neocore Games
Let no one say that Inquisitor – Martyr didn’t have some hella fun combat. I mean… you get to use guns that rapid-fire the equivalent of 21st-century grenade launcher rounds. It’s spectacular!

The Story

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr flirts with the concept of psychic blanks and the anathema nature of the God-Emperor. Which is really interesting actually! And the story mashes both concepts into a singular entity that your character has to track down. While that in itself is not a bad idea at all, and it certainly raises some intriguing questions about the direction in which the story could go with a sequel as well as how it could affect the rest of the Warhammer 40,000 universe at large, it fails to provide enough for the punchline we were all expecting by the end of it.

An anti-psyker turned into the most powerful psychic being of all time capable of literally killing daemon’s souls? Hell yeah!

That she has only a handful of sentences to speak of before the game abruptly ends?

This is too big to end it just like that! And while there’s seasonal content on the way, none of it details further developments on this most key of plot points. And yeah, the dialogue’s a bit on the campy side, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for a lack of expositional content. There’s no need to tell everything, but give us enough so we have something to hope to have answered in a sequel.

What Chaosbane Will Need

What Warhammer: Chaosbane will need to do to not land us in another climax of disappointment, is to ensure that there’s a satisfying payoff to reaching the adventurer’s goal. Understandable, whether it’s Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000, you’d expect some grimdark stuff to occur, but that doesn’t mean the ending has to be a downer the size of a Space Hulk.

Inquisitor Martyr, Warhammer 40,000, Neocore Games
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr had some really fun crafting and a satisfying skill tree setup. And who doesn’t love slaying the heretical and daemonic forces of Chaos? But the accessibility to post-game content has been a bit of annoyance.

The Gameplay

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr plays like most other third-person ARPGs. A skill bar, attacks and abilities, and a skill tree with which to further level up and enhance your character. A problem comes in when some of your abilities are tied directly to the gear you’re wearing. This prevented a lot of free customization that could otherwise happen, and that I was hoping for.

I actually appreciated the way that Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr setup their skill trees. And during the story, the pacing of your Inquisitor’s leveling up was pretty fair. The leveling system was managed by the acquiring of better-leveled gear as well as the gaining of actual experience points, but your character’s power level was directly influenced by your gear, and that in turn influenced the difficulty of various missions you took on. It was interesting and different. But after the story missions, well, it gets a bit boring.

Let’s Keep Crafting Going

Inquisitor Martyr, Warhammer 40,000, Neocore Games
Getting to traverse the entire sector was an awesome feature, and I’m hoping we’ll get to explore the world of Warhammer Fantasy just as much.

The crafting was one of the best remembered parts during my experience in the game. Not only was the crafting easy to navigate, but the upgrades that one could make to the crafting mechanism (one of the tech priests of Mars, probably the greatest technological minds of the entire Imperium) were interesting and provided something to do during the story as well as to continue working towards during post-story gameplay. But the best part about it? All the different items and weapons you could craft.

For Warhammer 40,000 fans, it’s a blast getting to craft our favorite things from the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It was satisfying to create a powerful Warp Rod for my psyker and to see it come out with some nice stat/ability boosters. And you can craft different tiers of items as well. I actually enjoyed the crafting in this game better than I enjoyed it in Diablo III. (And well, that’s not something I normally say when comparing any ARPG to the Diablo series!)

We’ve had crafting in Co-op compatible games now for a few titles: Warhammer: Vermintide, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and now Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr. I really hope we’ll have more crafting fun in Warhammer: Chaosbane.

On the Matter of Co-Op

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr did pull off a nice co-op experience where you could take on the various mission types. The issue was that the three classes didn’t add too much to the team dynamics aside from aesthetic and gear differences. But from the looks of the Warhammer: Chaosbane gameplay trailer, I think there will be more emphasis on utilizing co-op during the game’s story mode. Something much like the Warhammer: Vermintide series did, where each character serves a distinct purpose or function.

How Not to Do End-Game Content

It takes a lot to reach the seasonal endgame stuff in Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr. Currently, there is a Season One event which introduces a new enemy from one of Warhammer 40,000’s many factions: the Drukhari! The Dark Eldar! Frikin’ sweet if only I could actually fight them. I’m currently at a power level of 715 and I’m still over 200 levels away from reaching the minimum. Better accessibility to the game’s additional content would give players a better impression in the face of repetitive post-story missions.

What Chaosbane Will Need

Inquisitor Martyr, Warhammer 40,000, Neocore Games
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr had its fun moments that really plunged the player into the 41st Millennium.

What Warhammer: Chaosbane will need to do is to provide the action-lovers with the right variety of abilities to mix-and-match according to their personal styles. Room for experimentation increases game longevity. This will prevent stagnation and increase replayability, reduce restrictions while encouraging creativity, all this contributes to player engagement. For RPG fans, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr showed off some fun ideas with how the skill trees and crafting could be done. I hope to see some sort of adaptation of that in Warhammer: Chaosbane. And again, if the trailer is anything to go by, I suspect the story missions in Warhammer: Chaosbane will have some great co-op opportunities.

Final Thoughts

Alas, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr is by NeocoreGames, and we have a whole different studio behind Chaosbane. Maybe they have been taking notes on how to make the world of Warhammer Fantasy as badass as possible. Or maybe they’ve been cooking up something entirely different and better than what I’ve been daydreaming of up to now. The trailers have done a fine job in showing us tidbits into what’s going to hit stores in January 2019. Expect to see more news as more information comes out! Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr was a fine game, and I enjoyed the journey playing it for the most part. But I do hope to see the formula improved in Eko Software’s take on the ARPG genre with one of Games Workshop’s properties.

Country music video BANNED for being TOO SEXY

Charles Parker Interview

J.G. Bennet, 10/2/2018. Country crossover guitarist, Charles Parker is gaining momentum following the release of his new single, Party Girls.  The song and video is being pulled from radio stations and others are refusing to play it all together.  Currently fighting for his first amendment rights, Mr. Parker spoke with Slickster Magazine about the manufactured controversy surrounding his music and a whole lot more.

Slickster – Charles, what can you tell me about the video for “Party Girls” being banned.

Charles Parker – First, I need to you, it’s out on Country Radio right now and it’s #75 on the charts.  A few months ago it was playing on a station in Missouri.  All of sudden we got a message from the program director who said, “I think I’m gonna’ have to drop this song. I’m getting complaints.  I’m picturing ladies outside (the station) with picket signs.  Then I came up with the idea that I’m the Country Marilyn Manson, getting banned everywhere.

So, we do the video and we took it over to CMT (Country Music Television). They come back tell us, “No, we’re not going to play this video. It’s too sexist and there are too many short shorts.”  I go back to them and ask them, “Have you seen some of the shows you air?”  They have a show called “Bachorlette Weekend” that they air every weekend, which is TOTALLY worse than the Party Girls video.

Now, all of sudden, today, I have the video advertising on Facebook.  But today I got a message saying, “Your ad has been cancelled for going against Facebook advertising policy.”  It further explains that there was too much skin and too much nudity.  First of all, there is no nudity in the video at all.  If you watch the video it’s totally PG-13. There is nothing wrong it, and there are way worse things on Facebook than Party Girls.  I wrote back to them and filed a complaint for taking away my freedom of speech.  So, yeah, it’s getting banned.  People are refusing to play it because… I don’t know!  Too many short shorts!

Slickster – Who do you think is personally responsible for the censorship of your music and video?  Who is making that call?

CP –  It’s whoever is on the board of the video channel, or maybe it’s the public.  My Facebook music promotion has been running for a month without issue.  Then, all of sudden, today they decide to take it down?  Someone had to approve it originally, so did it get to a different approval system today, or did someone complain about it, because they had nothing better to do?   If they don’t like it, don’t watch it.  They shouldn’t be able to discriminate against it, but that seems to be the case here.  I’ve written them and waiting to hear back.

Slickster – How did the video for Party Girls come together?

CP – I had an idea of a “party theme”.  Let’s get some girls, gather up people and take this party from place to place.  We shot it at a dock bar here in Maryland.  It shows the girls meeting up and getting ready for a night out at the bar.  There was some shots on a boat and some shots done at the bar, and some were done in the studio.  There were also some shots from the house, as they are getting ready to go out.  So, it was just a fun video; A day in the life of a party girl basically.  We did some girls pranks too.

Slickster – How did you go about writing your songs and putting all the pieces together?

CP – With most songs, I’ll sit down with an acoustic guitar and strum some chords, get an idea in my head and put it all together.   That song (Party Girls) was the second song I released to Country Radio.  The first song I released was just a normal, regular song.  It went to #81 on the charts, and it wasn’t very… It didn’t really do what I thought it would, just being a “normal” song.  I hear things that are out on country radio now and it’s more of that “Bro-Country” kind of thing.   I thought to myself, “I’m gonna’ write a song that kind of fits what’s out there. It seems to be what radio is looking for, so let me just give them what they are looking for.”

So, I came up with Party Girls.  It has a danceable beat, and a techno feel.  It has the country guitars and a chant , “Party Girls!, Party Girls!, Party Girls!” You know, I played it the other day at an outdoor festival at the beach in Maryland.  There was a thousand people who had never heard the song before. At the end of the song I said, “What’s the name of the song?”  They said, “PARTY GIRLS!” So, its just one of those things that is very simple and it has a catchy chorus that sticks with you.

When I put that together, I came up with the chorus and added some verses around it to kind of put it in perspective of…   Everybody goes to work 9 to 5, they’re looking forward to the weekend, they want to fo out and have a good time, and let’s take this party around the world.  There’s actually a line in the song that says that.   And that was the idea; Let’s take these party girls, in a Pied Piper kind of way, and take them from town to town, state to state, and have a good time. Forget about work.  Forget about politics. Live for today.  Live for the fun.

Slickster – You mentioned Bro-country in your previous response.  What does that mean to you?

CP – You know, I don’t know what that is. (Laughs)  There are some acts that are coming out that have been given the name Bro-Country for whatever reason.  Country music is not that same as it used to be ten years ago, twenty years ago.  It’s totally crossed over into all these different formats.  There is rock influence, hip hop influence, and R&B… it’s not the same.  Its not Johny Cash or Merle Haggard.  It’s not even Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson, it’s more pop and rock.   I guess it’s a good thing for me, since I came from a rock background, and the songs that I write fit into that vein, so I was able to crossover into that market.  I can’t complain about that!

Slickster – There is some pretty fancy guitar work going on in the solo.  What advice would you give to a young guitarist (and other musicians) for honing their songwriting and instrument technique chops?

CP – Just practice, practice, practice! A lot of people come to me and tell me they want to learn to play guitar, but they don’t want to put any time into it.  You need to play, all the time, especially in the beginning.  You need to live with that guitar.

To tell you about the guitar solo, I wish that was me! That was one of the best guitar players in the world playing that solo.

Slickster – Who was it?

CP – It was Brent Mason.  He’s a studio musician from Nashville, played the guitar solo. He’s played on every country song you’ve heard on the radio. He’s on all the Alan Jackson records.  If you look up his discography, its sick.   I was just luckily to have him play my record.

Slickster – Did you learn by ear or by tabs?  Do you have any formal music education, like piano or choir, etc…

CP – I started out as kid learning some chords out of book, and strumming chords.  Back in the day they had guitar magazines that were popular.  That was just how we learned songs. Now you have the internet with all of the tabs, but most of the time you go these websites and the tabs are wrong!   The chords are wrong, the tabs are wrong, and I know a lot of people who go out and play songs wrong.  They say, “I learned it off the internet”.  I wouldn’t put a lot of stock into what you find on the internet.

Slickster – Has there been anything written about you online or in print that is absolutely untrue, or there any falsehoods on Charles Parker that you’d like to set the record straight on?

CP –  I haven’t seen anything.  A lot of times they confuse me with the jazz saxophonist, Charlie Parker, but that’s not me.  I’m a whole lot younger than he is (was).

Slickster – You jumped the gun on one of my next questions.  I was eventually going to ask you about that connection to Charlie Parker.  Did you ever go by the name “Charlie”, and have to change your name to “Charles” to avoid confusion?

CP – No, I’ve always gone by Charles.  Actually when the song went out on Youtube, there were people commenting, “This isn’t him.  This isn’t Charlie Parker, the jazz guy”.  Well, of course not!  This has nothing to do with jazz.

Slickster – Have you ever listened to Charlie Parker, aka Bird, the alto saxophonist?

CP – No, not really.

Slickster –  Charles, thanks for taking the time to share with us about the controversy surrounding your new country music video.  Is there anything else you’d like to share?  Anything goes!

CP –  I hope people check out my music and give it a chance.  If it’s not for you, or it’s different than what you listen to, it’s not a bad thing.  It could be the next thing.  You can download it www.CharlesParkermusic.com  We’re working on launching huge giveaway.  It’s going to be a vacation package to Jamaica!  Win a vacation with the Party Girls.  Check my facebook page for more details.  Download the song on iTunes to qualify to enter.
