Assault Android Cactus+ Review

Android1 by Witch Beam Games

Future Expectations Met

You visit the Assault Android Cactus+’ s website and know diligence and hard work. You do some research and discover it was a game destined for Nintendo’s Wii U console. This never came to fruition. The general lack of success of the Nintendo Wii U, with just 13.56 million consoles sold in January 2018 according to

Polygon, made it impossible for some developers to create games on the console. In 2019, Nintendo Switch and Witch Beam Game’s final collaboration offers players a new twin stick experience they must embrace. What makes this different from Dodge Roll’s Enter the Gungeon, or 10Tons’ Jydge?

Character Boost

Android2 by Witch Beam Games

The work by Tim Dawson, at @Ironicaccount on Twitter and on behalf of Witch Beam, is epic in Assault Android Cactus+. I have not seen his Dragon Tails comic series, but this game has the vibrant look and bold character design of some solid nostalgic games. Actually, who can forget Mister Sanatana Mishra’s influence, @sanatanamishra on Twitter, and Jeff van Dyck’s sound, @Jeff_van_Dyck on Twitter.

Assault Android Cactus+ specifically reminds me of a style seen on NEC’s Turbo Graphics 16. You can play games like Keith Courage and the Alpha Zones or Bonk’s Adventure to see examples of this style. Assault Android Cactus+ expands on the limits of its 16-bit predecessors. It fully embraces the high-resolution visuals on Nintendo’s mighty, portable, but home console.

This game offers players doom and destruction, in the end. Well first, wait, Assault Android Cactus+ follows Cactus, a police android, who responds to a stranded space freighter. She discovers it is under siege by its malfunctioning robot workers. Cactus, and her android recruits, battle through the crippled freighter, Genki Star, to reach the brain of the ship and correct this malfunction.

The Cactus Crew

Choose between Cactus, Holly, Lemon, Coral, and a few secret characters to get to the brain of the Genki Star. Each player has a main weapon and a limited secondary weapon. Players can use the, cross pad or left stick to move your character.

The right analog stick aims your weapon 360-degrees in any direction on a level. Players shoot using the R or ZR shoulder buttons and switch between primary and secondary weapons with the L or ZL shoulder buttons.
Players can use the Nintendo Switch portable mode, dog bone, individual Joy con, or the Nintendo Pro Controller to play this game.

These Levels Are Worthy

Android4 by Witch Beam Games

The levels in this game allow you to feel safe, at first. The three-dimensional game models are seamless. The action in this game is constant and pressures when necessary. The three-dimensional game levels, however, deceive players.

They initially surround and initiate you into the world of Cactus and the Genki Star. Early levels allow you to dodge pressure, along linear levels, and enjoy the game. The challenge comes later as level designs work in tandem with enemy attacks to corner, delay, and overwhelm the player in your quest to get to the end of the title.

The game includes a variety of minor characters that attack in swarms. The end of each of the levels finishes with a major boss character. For example, in the first levels, there are minor, blue, spider walkers in the game. Blow them apart. In later levels, red varieties of the same spider walkers attack, with heavier armor, and surround your character, the other spider characters, with smaller enemies.

Some of these enemies have electrical current to hold your character in place. Other flying enemies attack you with light, and heavy, armor to bombard and overwhelm Cactus and the others. The series of levels ends with the attack of a massive Spider boss, with rapid and various, projectile attacks.

The Source of Power

Android5 by Witch Beam Games

The biggest issue in this game is the process of refilling your android battery. Defeat the enemies in each level and section to recover your android battery. If you do not do this, your battery depletes, and your character dies. Each character also has a life bar.

The objective of the game is to build combinations and increase the potency of you primary and secondary weapons. Characters die, and return, with the life bar, but you lose the effectiveness of your primary and secondary weapons.

Your android battery goes, and it is game over. This android battery process, as the game goes forward, can be arduous. In my opinion, each player will approach this process with a different perspective. It just feels like overkill, at times.

Conclusion

Assault Android Cactus+ is awesome. There is one cool issue. It is possible to complete the game with one character, or switch between the various characters and complete the game. It really works best if two or more players jump in this game. Either way, it is just a fun time. Finish the game and unlock some major modes that will push your limits and give you that plus you wanted and more. What is most apparent? This game is fun and must buy on the Nintendo Switch.

UFC 236 shaping up to bring the heat!

0

Professional Mixed Martial Arts returns to Atlanta on April 13th, 2019.

By: Ray Vann Jr. – The UFC is making its way back to Atlanta after a three-year hiatus, and promoters are promising an action-packed line-up for April 13’s clash at UFC 236.

Holloway vs. Poirer

Holloway vs. Poirer

Current featherweight champion Max Holloway is headlining the night’s action, stepping into the ring for a second time against lightweight Dustin Poirier. The last time the two faced off was at UFC 143 back in 2012 when Poirier submitted the current featherweight champ via armbar less than four minutes into the first round. Holloway, however, is confident that he’s grown since the last time the two squared off, and says he thinks he can take Poirier down handily in their upcoming rematch.

Despite being submitted by Poirier in 2012, the odds heavily favor Holloway at UFC 236. Poirier, who was getting the worse of the stand-up in the first fight, beat Holloway by securing an early takedown and immediately gaining mount. Holloway has improved in all facets in the seven years since, especially his takedown defense. He stuffed 9 of 11 shots in his last fight against Brian Ortega and, prior to that fight, hadn’t been taken to the mat in eight straight bouts, dating back to 2014.

“The best way to describe it is, like, me right now, I would kill that guy,” Holloway told reporters at ESPN. “I would literally put him in a cemetery. There is a cemetery down the road from my house. I’d probably go visit him every day.”

Poirier, however, shows no signs of backing down, telling MMAJunkie Radio “all I need is one mistake or one opportunity, and I’m going to take full advantage of it, and I can finish the fight again.”

“I’m going to leave it all out there,” Poirier added, “and I’m coming home with gold. I just know it. I feel it in my bones.”

Holloway is currently the favorite, but Poirier still has plenty of fight in him and has the potential to make this an outstanding matchup. The winner of this match takes home the interim lightweight championship title, and also gets put on track for possibly the biggest prize of all: the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with the fearsome Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov in the fall.

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya is another fight that promises to keep fight fans on the edge of their seats as the two do battle for the interim middleweight championship. The undefeated Adesanya, fresh off his win against MMA legend Anderson Silva, looks well prepared to seize the belt, but Gastelum thinks that Adesanya’s relative freshness in the MMA scene – having only joined the UFC in 2017 – might work against him.

“I don’t think [Adesanya’s] been through the fire that I’ve been through,” Gastelum recently told reporters. “He hasn’t fought the quality of opponents that I have… Obviously, he’s fought some great fighters, but the top five guys, any one of those top five guys can be the champion, and I don’t think he’s fought those kinds of guys.”

Adesanya is currently the favorite going into the match at -180, but many experts and fighters remain divided on how the match will play out.

“Adesanya…I think me and him are the best to strikers in the UFC right now as far as creativity goes” welterweight Curtis Millender told reporters, throwing his prediction behind the Nigerian fighter.

Others, such as UFC featherweight and former welterweight Complete Devastation champion, disagree and throw their hat behind Gastelum.

“Gastelum is rugged, he’s tough, and he’s very fast for that weight class,” Rinaldi told SBN MMA. “Obviously Israel is extremely fast and good on his feet, but Gastelum has the option to take it to the ground if he needs to. And his hands are lightning quick as well.”

Millender vs. Muhammad

And, since we mentioned Millender, it’s worth noting that he’s also going to be making an appearance at the April 13th event, going up against fellow welterweight Belal Muhammad. Millender was beaten just last month at UFC Fight Night 146, submitting to a rear naked choke from Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos just two minutes into the first round, and he’s looking to avenge that loss on Saturday night.

“I’ve got to let everybody know in the division it’s not going to be easy like that,” Millender told reporters. “You’re going to have a problem every time you fight me. I know I have to build the fear back up. I need to let these dudes know it’s going to be trouble. If you want to take me down, I’ve got to take that as a sign of disrespect. You want to take me down and try and embarrass me. I need to show them that it’s not going to be easy.”

Despite the tough talk, however, the 14-3 Muhammed is expected to carry the fight and is currently the favorite at -140.

Eryk Anders vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.

Eryk Anders vs. Khalil Rountree

The light heavyweight matchup between Eryk Anders and Khalil Rountree Jr. is expected to be the slobberknocker of the night, as the two heavy hitters tee-off on one another in an attempt to pound the other into oblivion. Both fighters have had a rocky career in the UFC, and so are likely looking to add to their highlight reel at UFC 236 to prove that they still have the potential to compete. If any fight is likely to have the Knockout of the Night, it’s going to be this one.

Women’s MMA Fights at UFC 236

The women’s matchup between flyweights Poliana Botelho and Lauren Mueller is also one for fight fans to keep an eye on. Both women look to make a name for themselves at UFC 236. Botelho was originally slated to do battle with Paige VanZant, but VanZant was pulled from the fight after concerns over a previous arm-fracture surfaced. With a three-inch height advantage and significantly more fight experience, Botelho is expected to beat Mueller handily but Mueller can’t be completely discounted and just might pull something out of her hat.

Russian Florida girl, Nino is the girl of the week. She has huge boobs and loves to share her moments on Snapchat.  Nino enjoys trying on new clothes, riding around in South Florida and going to the pool.

Don’t get on her bad side though – Never tempt fate with a pissed off Russian girl.  Nino isn’t afraid to tell it like it is, and she has a mind of her own. When she was growing up, a lot of guys made fun of her because she was too skinny.  Now, the tables have turned and her full figure garners plenty of attention.

Although, Nino is original from Russia, she loves her new home in the USA.  The warm weather and beaches of Florida really fit her fun, flirty lifestyle.  Not all Russian girls are mail order brides, you know.

Quixotic interview

Quixotic live stage shot 01

Krisztián Miklósy, better known by his stage name Quixotic, is a Hungarian electronic musician.

Flamingo Drive-In is Miklósy’s newest full-length album.  Featuring 12 original tracks of synthwave music, and heavily inspired by luxury sports cars, Drive-in is the apex of the ‘Outrun’ genre.

Outrun is best described as a sub-genre of electronic music known as synthwave.   A homage to the 1980’s and pop culture which often featured car races and hot pursuits with luxury cars.   The most frequently cited example is the 1986 arcade racing console game by Sega, Out Run.

Slickster: The album opens up with the track “Metal Cobra”.  This instantly sets the tone of the album as an 80’s-style Outrun opus.   Is there a formula to concoct titles that evokes a synthwave feeling?
Quixotic: The formula was easy in the early days of synthwave, now it is one of the hardest thing to do, you have to dig deep in 80s culture to avoid overused clichés and come up with a rad and unique title. But when you finally do the good and fitting one, It feels like finding the Holy Grail.

Slickster: You are from the European country of Hungary.  How is the synthwave scene in there right now?
Quixotic: We can’t complain, in the capital city, Budapest, the nightlife is world famous and not just because of the cheap booze. I still consider synthwave an underground scene, but as a small country we hosted most of the big guys of this genre, I played on stage with headliners like Carpenter Brut, Perturbator, Danger and Com Truise and we are hosting synthwave parties regularly. I have two of my own: Stranger Synths, based on the netflix hit series and Waves by Quixotic, which evokes a chill Miami Vice vibe. We have an enthusiastic community and a lot of fellow producers too, we even had 3 compilation albums called Hungarian Synthwave Allstars.

Thoughts on The Terminator

Slickster: Track three on the album a tribute to Arnold Schwarzenegger and the melody is a re-imagining of the main theme from The Terminator.   Why did you choose this movie theme as opposed to other of his many popular movie themes?
Quixotic: Yes, for first glance it is easy to spot the Terminator theme, but for hardcore Arnie fans, there is more, the high pitched rhythmic notes of the intro are a nod to Harold Faltermeyer’s Running Man soundtrack and after the guitar solo the synth solo using motifs from the Conan theme and the whole track is pumping, like the man himself said, “I’m hier’ to pump you up!”

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Slickster: How has Schwarzenegger’s life affected your own?  What inspiration does his career bring to you?
Quixotic: As a kid, my ultimate action hero. I remember watching The Terminator for the first time, I was skipping school by I faked being ill and when my parents went to work, I grabbed a chair to reach the top shelf in our living room, the top shelf of forbidden VHS tapes, I couldn’t care less about the pirated western german porn with horrible hungarian voice-over, I just wanted to see this dude kick some ass. Now as an artist, I learned a lot about him, his unbelievable career, how he set the bar  higher every time he wanted something to achieve. A true inspiration, an idol for me the perfect example of the american dream, just listen to the monologue of the track.

Quixotic and working with other musicians

Slickster: Your buddy Lazerpunk (Read Lazerpunk’s interview with Slickster Mag here)  collaborated on track 4 Shredracer –  It seems you were influenced by his recent viral success of ‘Black Lambo’ on this track.  This track invokes scenes of luxury sports cars racing through the Miami underground at night with law enforcement officers in hot pursuit.   It is essentially an ‘outrun’ track.   Can you discuss breilfy your partnership with Lazerpunk and how this track was developed.
Quixotic:  This track is an alternate version of  our track “Speedracer” from his death & glory album.  Since we both love cars and speed, the title was obvious, with this version I added new layers with with some guitar shredding, this explains the title change. We played many shows together even though our music vastly different, opposite edges of the genre, but I came up with the perfect marketing for it. It’s like a jing-jang thing, we are the hungarian jedi knight and sith lord of synthwave, together we bring balance to the scene. This track is a good example of that, a heavy-hitting ride yet accompanied with catchy melodies. Btw I made a remix of Black Lambo, it’s already a banger in our sets and it will be released very soon!

Quixotic synthwave dj set live - low res 07

Slickster: Who plays all the guitars on your album?
Quixotic: My guitar hero is Miklós Czifra.  He is one the most talented guitar players in Hungary, however he plays in a famous hungarian metal band called Leander Kills, he is obsessed  with the 80s like me and became fan of the whole retrowave thing the moment I showed him Electric Youth’s ‘Right Back To You’ back in the early 2010’s. We are also playing together in synthpop band Amigod. But for my project he truly helped to bring the tracks to the next level on the album and since we are doing live shows too his stage presence with his skills and with his awesome neon Ibanez are truly bringing the 80s back to life.

Slickster: After the first five tracks on the album, the pace and timbre of the album changes.  After opening up with some heavy Outrun, you shift gears into a much more mellow and subdued tone on Dust to Dust.   It lends somewhat of a bi-polar feeling to the record.  Was this your intention or did you have two separate projects going on at the same time?
Quixotic: The whole album is a journey. Many of the tracks were previously released over the years, but for the album I reworked, re-recorded and remastered the ‘old’ track tracks to the maintain the quality and make it a bit more coherent, but each track tells a story on its own. My main goal was to make an album which feels like a best of, a greatest hits of synthwave, where you can catch a glimpse of every kind.  So if someone asks what is synthwave you just have to show Flamingo Drive-In. One of the reasons I fell in love with synthwave is the diversity of the genre, it’s fun to explore its possibilities.

I used to go EDM clubs and  I also used to play on drums  in a punk band, two totally different world with two totally different kind of people, they don’t get along, but on a synthwave gig,  I see both parties having fun, metalheads, technoguys, it doesn’t matter, the music, the visuals, the nostalgia brings people together.

Slickster: You named track seven White Testarossa. Is that your ideal car?
Quixotic: Well, it was good enough for Don Johnson. It is an ultimate 80s dream car and referencing to your first question I was surprised no one used this title before, because it works even without any music. Also a little nod to my buddy Lazerpunk’s Black Lambo, just to keep the rivalry  fresh.

White Testarossa
A scene from Miami Vice, with the non-infamous 1986 White Testarossa.

Slickster: Palms is probably my second favorite track on the record.  Can you talk what inspired you write this and how long it took to create it?
Quixotic: I wrote Palms back in 2013, after a late summer vacation. I’m not a winter person and I wanted make a track to survive the cold season. Who knew so many people can relate. When I produce I always start with ideas then listen to it in a loop usually until I hate it , but sometimes it can develop into a full track. For Palms, fortunately, it was a fast process, I had to catch the fading memories of the trip, but the tweaking took like 2 weeks, for example the notorious “hiccups”  which have some controversy among fans, but it would not be the same without it.  For the album tweak the

Slickster: Teenage Hero uses the clip of Matthew Broderick from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,  “Life moves pretty fast.  If you don’t stop and look around once and a while you could miss it.”    While this is the least-heavy track on the album, it’s also the best one IMO.    Channeling everything 80’s into one sweet nostalgic pop-track Teenage Hero just nails it for the synthwave genre.    Why did you include the this track among the darker, outrun tracks on the album?
Quixotic: Like I said before, Quixotic is a journey through the synth waves from 80s Miami sunsets over palms and cocktails to epic outrun car chases with loads of guitar solos. This track embodies my lighter side for sure, originally I just got the guitar solo part from Miklos as an idea titled “80s hero”, then I built the whole song around it and as a big fan of John Hughes movies I was happy that the quote was a perfect fit for the mood and sax was the cherry on top by the other Quixotic band member Rita Baracskay.

Slickster: Will you be doing any live shows in support of Flamingo Drive-In?
Quixotic: Yes, besides my dj sets, Quixotic Live shows are now in motion, a real audiovisual treat with a band lineup with Miklós on guitars and Rita on Sax. We have a few dates booked already in Europe till the summer and planning a full EU tour in fall and hopefully next year in the US.

Slickster: Thanks for talking to Slickster Mag and sharing your music.  Is there anything else you’d like to add that maybe we didn’t discuss in the interview?
Quixotic: I’d like to mention The Sonnyfive who made cover artwork based on my idea. He really did an amazing job and we hide bunch of easter eggs for true 80s nerds.

Thank you for the opportunity!

Anthem Update 1.0.4 – Did It Help?

Anthem Update 1.0.4 – Did It Help?

Anthem, BioWare, Javelin, Storm

Written by Jonathan Lee, March 28, 2019, 6:00pm. Tweet to: @Writerscube

A New Patch Has Appeared!

Heads-up, Freelancers! BioWare has dropped a new patch for Anthem, and it’s looking to be a pretty sizable one with changes that are bound to please everyone no matter your favorite Javelin. This patch is a welcome one especially since the last one had left players feeling angry about the loot situation. And by angry, I mean that some players attempted to boycott the game for a weekend.

So, you’re probably wondering, first and foremost, what happened with the loot? According to the patch details, it looks like on difficulties of Grandmaster 1 and higher, the chances for Masterwork and Legendary items have been increased. Crafting materials and “additional items” have also been added to the potential drops that one can get from chests in “Strongholds, Freeplay, and Missions”. While BioWare continues trying to tweak the rate in which players get the higher-grades of equipment and components, a new kind of loot container has been introduced: The Elysian Cache.

Meet The Elysian Cache

As you go about your time flying around and completing daily challenges, you are supposed to earn items called Elysian Keys. These will now be important because at the end of Strongholds, there are supposed to be containers called Elysian Caches. These can be important because in these Caches, you can find unique vanity items to better spruce up your Javelin! According to the patch notes, there’s no chance of acquiring duplicates, so with every Elysian Cache, you’ll get something new. At present, BioWare has stated that there’s only 67 items to be found in these Elysian Caches, but it’s made clear that this is something of a test. In the patch notes, they conclude their Elysian Caches segment with: “This is our first version of the ruleset for Elysian Caches in the game and we’ll look forward to your feedback and the data we gather from your play.”

The Forge no longer has a loading screen, and is quick and easy to access.

Does the Patch Hold Up?

Loot-wise, after doing a few runs in both the new Legendary Missions and Stronghold, I found the loot haul to be fair. I got a Legendary on my first Legendary Mission, which was a pleasant surprise. And in the four to five hours I played, my Masterwork collection has since doubled. So, I think in regards to loot, it’s a nice change! (I played on Grandmaster 2 while testing out the various mission modes.)

However, it’s important to note that some players are reporting that their loot situation has still not improved, and you will likely find this on the Anthem Reddit, if you check it out now. With every patch, there’s a fresh list of issues that players are quickly finding. I would imagine this works to help BioWare create their next list of things to improve upon.

Although, it could just be RNGesus frowning upon those players for killing too many Grabbits… but that’s just my theory.

There are a lot of other areas that have been improved. One of my favorites is how all the Javelins along with some equipment parts have been buffed. This, I think, helps grant players a greater sense of power with their gear and abilities. One of my favorites is “Giant Slayer” which increases weakpoint damage after five consecutive hits. I’m already having a blast with that piece of gear coupled with my Masterwork Thunderbolt of Yvenia.

Speaking of equipment, the Forge no longer has a loading screen, and is quick and easy to access. Slowly but surely, I suspect that BioWare will actually get rid of a number of these various loading screens. As a prediction, I think we’ll eventually see something more akin to Destiny when it comes to screen- and area-instance-transitions.

Anthem, Masterwork, Loot, Giant Slayer

Final Thoughts

Anthem continues to evolve. And BioWare is working hard to patch up the bugs and snuff out the flames from the game’s rough opening. It is clear that there are players who are not exactly pleased with how the game first came out. And they are not happy either with the pace that BioWare is fixing the game. But as we’ve seen with other games, such as Warframe, Destiny, and Diablo 3—these kinds of live games have growing pains. We’ll have to see whether the gaming community’s patience can continue to be as benevolent as it has been in the past.

Again, if you ever need to review the patch notes for Anthem, check them out here!

Fan Octo interview

Fan Octo synthwave promo photo

The synthwave interviews on Slickster Magazine are a huge hit.  Thanks for everyone who has read, commented and shared their thoughts on the posts.

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by Welsh based multi-instrumentalist, Fan Octo.  After checking out his newest album, VHS Violence, we decided to reach out to FO and get his input on the synthwave scene and 80’s nostalgia.

VHS Violence is the sophomore effort from Octo.   Featuring his signature 8-string guitar wizardry, the self-released album has six original tracks.  Each of the tracks is a throwback to the 80’s VHS cassette days of electronic music.   Octo does his best to recreate the sensation of walking through a dusty mom-and-pop video rental store, and interprets those feelings of 80’s retro through a lens of modern production sensibilities.

The result  of Fan Octo’s blending heavy guitars, keyboards, drum samples and computer workstations is well within what consumers have come to expect from a synthwave LP.   With obvious nods to creative geniuses like James Cameroon and John Carpenter, VHS Violence will appeal to anyone who enjoys the films of these directors.

Slickster:  The first and potentially most important question: Your stage name is Fan Octo, and the initials are FO… sometimes referred to as Fuck Off.  Is that intentional?

Fan Octo: Good morning. I wish my name was that deep but I am afraid not. “Fan” stemmed from a childhood nickname that became a musical pseudonym and “Octo” because I play 8 string guitars. People always expect a cooler explanation from my stage name. Sorry to disappoint.

Slickster:  On your most recent album, VHS Violence, you combine musical elements of both heavy metal and electronica. Bands such as Engines of Aggression and Ministry pioneered these genre-bending sounds. How is your music different from these visionaries?

Fan Octo: I would say Fan Octo is directed more to the soundtrack areas of music composition, I try and achieve retro timbres and tones with my instruments, even if they are newer synths and extended range guitars.

Engines of Aggression and Ministry have a rawer and darker signature with certainly a more Rock/Industrial Metal edge and I do love the experimental nature within Industrial music, especially regarding sample based production, noise synths and hi-gain guitar tones.  But for Fan Octo, I am trying to paint a retro film-scape with short soundtracks as opposed to producing a hard hitting industrial number.

Slickster:  Wales  – your home country – is known for two things, fantastic salt marsh lamb and some kick ass rugby teams.  Do you aim to add synthwave to that list?

Fan Octo: There is certainly some amazing dishes to be had in Wales and excellent places to experience them. Rugby I am afraid though, I am not too knowledgable about, although I do know Wales have just won the grand slam so I guess… “high five” Welsh Rugby!

It would be great to have a strong Synthwave movement in Wales and to be a part of that would be excellent, I guess all I can do is keep being productive within my area and hope others do the same, maybe one day Wales and Synthwave will be a mentioned topic.

Slickster:  In the three music videos you’ve released for F.O., you demonstrate your aptitude on multiple instruments, however it seems heavy metal guitar is your primary instrument.  Can you take us through a basis practice routine that you use to hone your metal chops?

Fan Octo: I would agree, drums and synths are certainly secondary instruments for myself, guitar however, I have been playing for 17 years. Working with primarily extreme metal/shred projects before Fan Octo’s’ origin, projects where guitar was definitely the focal point.

These days however, I am trying to capture the essence of film scores, original ideas but with heavy 80s influences.

My chop routine is at least one hour a day practicing and one hour a day playing, some days though when I am completely free I will lock myself in my home studio and play/record all day. I find experimenting with sounds and techniques is key for creating new ideas and keeping things interesting.

Slickster:  VHS Violence, released in 2018, was inspired by 1980’s horror, action and sci-fi movies.  Can you name 3-5 of your favourite 1980’s movies?

Fan Octo: Besides the obvious choices of Aliens, Terminator, Robocop, Escape from New York etc etc. I would also add Chopping Mall, Day of the Dead, Fright Night, Nightmare Beach, Tenebre, The Slumber Party Massacre and The Wraith, to name but a few.

I love the variety of 80s Horror cinema, from stylistic Giallo with beautiful scores to trashy Slasher flicks with questionable synth soundtracks, I am not a Horror snob by any means and appreciate 80s cinema like I do 80s music, open minded and willing to give anything a shot once… maybe twice.

Snake

Slickster: Nice!  Your top three 1980’s babes.

Fan Octo: Barbara Crampton, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver! Still in strong female roles today as much as they were in the 80s, the three of them have been involved in some top flicks. From Beyond, Re-Animator, Trading Places, Prom Night, Aliens, Ghostbusters etc, amazing catalogues. I probably wouldn’t be in too much of a rush to watch Freaky Friday again though.

Slickster:  Going back to movies for a moment, one common thread among all synthwave musicians seems to be a huge respect for writer/director/musician John Carpenter.  In many of your own promo photos, you are seen posing wearing a t-shirt with the famous Carpenter film Big Trouble in Little China.  Can you discuss Mr. Carpenter’s influence on you and why you believe he has had such a long lasting impact on pop culture.

Fan Octo: I think one of the reasons he is such a big influence on myself and why he has stayed at the top for so long musically is his ability to compose riff based soundtracks, developing soundscapes and also work within progressive sound design. The timbres he uses regarding synths, his experimentation with tempo and time signatures have made some of the more recognizable soundtracks in cinema.  His more recent workings with “Lost Themes 1 & 2” show us he is still top of his game musically. I also think his history and approach to film making was just raw and uncompromising, his ideas and what he had to work with was as inspiring as it was impressive. His latest revisit/directing of the music video for “Christine” again, still shows his skills as a Master of Horror.

Fan Octo Promo Pic

Slickster:  What advice would you give to your younger self or a young creative person trying to get a foothold in music, film making, etc…

Fan Octo: I would definitely say focus and working with what you got. Many times I have had too many projects going nowhere slowly or was waiting on a certain piece of equipment before I thought I could start working on something. It is only when I concentrated my efforts into just one project ‘Fan Octo’, did I start to see my sound, vision and quality progress, also outside interest begun to gather and the music really started to move toward the right places and be heard by the right people. I guess just staying creative is key, equipment will upgrade and become more accessible as you grow and your content will become more refined with experience. Don’t wait on a certain pieces of gear or other people, just get out there and start being creative.

Slickster:  Do you have any live shows coming up to showcase your music?  If so, when and where?

Fan Octo: The remainder of 2019 for Fan Octo will be spent writing and recording the new EP, followed by videos and promotional work, also composing for several outside feature length Horror productions. 2020, live shows will definitely be on the cards. Starting from home and then wherever it takes me. I will be working toward a strong music set as well as a strong live visual to accompany.

Slickster:  FO, thanks again for sharing your music and best of luck in your career.  Lastly, what is the most important message you want to share with the world right now?

Fan Octo: You are welcome and thank you very much for the interview. I would say stay focused with what you are trying to achieve, whether that is with film, music or just art in general. Remain positive and professional in your chosen area and don’t be afraid to go for opportunities you may think are out of your reach, the worst case scenario is a “no”. Keep it Retro!

‘Climax’ Review: Tell God He Can’t Come to the Dance

0

Climax is similar to Luca Guadagnino‘s Suspiria in several ways. They’re two dance films with a desirable choreographer and a horrific downward spiral that overflows into nightmare fuel. The two films may draw comparisons since they hit theaters within six months of each other. Argentine-French filmmaker Gaspar Noé (Irréversible, Enter the Void) and his psychological horror dance film Climax intend to destroy you sensually. Noé’s trademark is unsettling cinema that assaults the audience with savage cinematography, scarring sexual sequences, and reciprocated anarchy.

The film revolves around the concept of dance being everything to these dancers. Choreographer Selva (Sofia Boutella) and DJ Daddy interview the dancers as the film opens divulging their deepest fears, history with drugs, sexual regrets and desires, and lack of limitations. They practice in an abandoned school in a remote location in the middle of winter and rehearse for their manager Emmanuelle. They celebrate by drinking the sangria Emmanuelle has made for them and the first half of the film is mostly everyone drinking, mingling, and gossiping about one another. But it comes to light that someone spiked the sangria with LSD. Everyone figuratively and literally loses their minds in the most violent and controversial ways imaginable.

Dance is everything in, “Climax.”

Climax was shot with only a five-page script and it often shows with its lengthy dance sequences and lack of dialogue for exaggerated periods. In the film, these dancers have only been working together for three days. In reality, the ten-minute opening sequence is one continuous shot and required 15-16 takes to complete. There’s this undeniable fluidity to the dancer’s choreography; how they’re able to produce in the moment. Seemingly clicking instantly with a performance that showcases their abilities both as a single dance unit and as a unique eccentric. A lot goes into dancing like this; intimacy, flexibility, endurance, and this energetic kind of unity that symbolizes how close everyone is.

After everyone has the opportunity to relax, partake in conversations that are so raunchy they’re staggering, and the almost unanimous decision that God has no presence in dance; a form of expression takes place. There’s no pattern or choreography involved. This movement is like blowing off steam where every stomp, spin, and head or hand shake is a remedy to every care or worry this group of young individuals may have. There are no restraints here and this is their way of saying, “I am unleashed. Witness me.”

Sofia Boutella as dance choreographer Selva in, “Climax.”

Once the LSD kicks in though, Climax becomes too weird and hysterical for its own good. A woman in the early stages of pregnancy is punched and kicked in the stomach. She then begins punching herself in the stomach repeatedly once she realizes retribution is out of the question. A woman with a cocaine addiction has her head catch on fire and an older brother is a little too infatuated with his younger sister and it’s pushed far beyond what is considered incestuous. Dancers begin urinating in the middle of the dance floor while others are a bloody mess. There’s so much puking and screaming that you wish for temporary deafness.

Meanwhile, the camera rotates and spins constantly; sometimes circling the room or being completely upside down. Combine all of that with the flashing red lights during the final act of the film and your brain feels like it was in a head-on collision; your ears are ringing, eyes can’t focus on anything, and your head is swimming in this tornado of ingested animalistic chaos.

Did this party even need LSD?

Sofia Boutella has a five-minute sequence where she comes completely unglued. She slams herself against walls, grinds on the floor, and digs her hands and arms into her pantyhose all while yelling and squawking like a wild animal in heat. It’s a baffling sequence because it’s fairly laughable and kind of an insult to call acting. However, since the actors/dancers chose to express themselves this way was their decision. Noé encouraged improvisation and this is how Boutella interpreted Selva’s inability to cope with a bad acid trip.

Climax is a lust-fueled freak show; a rabid and bonkers carnival of horrors. You understand what Climax is about, but it’s so nauseating and difficult to watch at times. It is the first time that there was this bewildering sensation to hurl before, during, and after the viewing of a film. In a way, the fact that this choreographed chimera triggered such a disgusting response is a statement in itself. Climax isn’t enjoyable or entertaining; it’s a raping of the senses because that’s what Gaspar Noé does best. On the other hand though, why would you want to endure such madness? This film may be an escape from your reality, but Noé rips it away without remorse. Climax clobbers you with a disorienting phantasmagoria so jarring that it leaves you trembling and dumbfounded.

Climax is now playing in select theaters. It is currently available on Region 2 DVD and Blu-ray through Arrow Films.

Singularity 5 Review

Multiple Perspectives

Lansdalelib by Josh Flickr

My name is William G. Chandler Jr. I write articles, for Slickster Magazine from the Nintendo Switch perspective. In this case, I found a novel opportunity. Derek Reeve, of PR Hound fame, was able to hook me up.

Derek offered me the code for a game, Singularity 5, by Monochrome Paris and for Oculus Rift, for review. This was out of my realm of experience. However, it was also hardware readily available, with some help.

Lansdale Library, in Pennsylvania, is an active, vital, community hub, it is a place to acquire knowledge. Lansdale Library accepts a variety of cultures and lifestyles.

The library also provides great fun, values, and entertainment, if you allow it. In my case, this library allows both the use, with guidance, and understanding of the hardware Oculus Rift.

This is great exposure for those who know this hardware and do not know it. In order to do this review, I offer my perspective. However, I also need the perspective of one librarian, who knows the hardware.

What is Oculus Rift?

Lansdalelib2 by karin schmidlin Flickr

Home consoles use controllers, the main console, and software to provide its players a fantastic experience on their television. Oculus Rift uses a unique pair of three-dimensional goggles, with headphones, two hand controllers, two area cameras, highly efficient software, and a powerful personal computer to provide in-depth experiences.

A home console thrives on your television, in two dimensions. Oculus Rift requires a room, space, and your upper body, to give you games that push your two-dimensional experience out and into a three- dimensional window.

For example, Nintendo Switch offers Nintendo Entertainment System’s Duck Hunt for players with that nostalgic itch. Oculus Rift offers a different Duck Hunt. In this case, the game surrounds you.

You are in the field. Imagine your gun in your hand. Shoot and watch ducks fall in front of your eyes. This happens in a room around you, through Oculus’ hardware.

The Hardware

Lansdalelib3 by Oculus Rift Flickr

I do not know Oculus Rift. A librarian, at Lansdale Library, was able to break down the specifics of the personal computer setup. First, here is a little about them. The person I worked with is a 47-year- old librarian, with a Masters in Library Science, and an undergraduate degree in computer information systems.

They run a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) class at the library. That is how they gained experience in virtual reality. They play board and card games, at least once a week.

The last game system purchased was a PlayStation 2. He currently owns a Nintendo Wii.

He knows the Oculus Rift is three-years-old and is owned by Facebook. The computer used for this Oculus Rift setup is a Hewlett Packer Omen with an Intel Core i5 7400. It has 3.00 Gigahertz and runs through a 64bit Windows 10 Home operating system.

This Hewlett Packer Omen uses 8 Gigabytes of RAM and accesses an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB video card for its games. In the end, the system is, in his words, “immersive”, and “takes you into the game”.

Oculus Rift, before you play, requires you to measure your game space, with two area cameras. The computer system, hand controllers, and headset all must initialize before your experience begins.

Into The Rift

Lansdalelib4 by Monochrome Paris

This librarian and I would take turns with the game, Singularity 5. This game is a wave shooter. This game literally throws tons of enemies at you in a variety of environments.

Players use their head, and neck, to look over the game environment through three-dimensional goggles. Sound enters your ears through a high definition headset.

We used hand controllers to grab weapons out of thin air. The librarian and I also used the controllers to push, attack, and move items in the vast environment with a combination of buttons, hand motions, and triggers, as games require.

In Singularity 5, players elevate into the game environment. The librarian described the game world as “detailed and expansive.” Enemies attack and defend from all sides. The environments remind me of the indoor areas of a game called, Bioshock from 2K Boston, or Irrational Games. You pull guns out of thin air.

You turn, look up and down, and shoot the mechanized enemies in the game. Enemies also thrust metal obstacles, at you, to stop your game progress. Enemies throw grenades.

Players bat the grenades away from themselves, or back at enemies. This librarian described the action in the game as “fast and heavy”, but with cut scenes to give him, enough of a break between attacks.

Three Dimensional Difficulties

Lansdalelib6 by Monochrome Paris

The majority of the game experience was good. There were a few issues. There was repetitive music in the game, at times. Singularity 5, when in Hewlett Packer Omen’s Ultra Graphics mode, slowed down or glitches, in this setup.

The game also requires constant, fast twitch, head, neck, and hand movement. This might be too much for some players.

Conclusion

Singularity 5 was a short experience but is a spectacular one. The most important thing, in all of this, is its accessibility in a diverse, community, library. The game is a demonstration of what is possible in a detailed, three-dimensional environment. It is a taste of truly great game experiences to come.

Angie is the sexy girl of the week.  This sought after Asian bombshell has big problems with her tan lines getting out of control.  That’s one of the hazards of being an in-demand traveling model.

As a petite asian female, with her rapidly growing social media fanbase, it’s no wonder she’s used to guys flirting with her.  That’s normal, but she can’t stand guys with an Asian fetish – that’s just weird to her.

Angie loves posing in front of the camera wearing bikinis and sexy lingerie.  As Bay Area native, being a free spirit comes naturally to her.  When she isn’t making money taking hot pictures, she likes checking out new music, shopping and hanging out with friends.

UFC Fight Night 146: Lewis vs. Dos Santos – Matchups

Lewis vs. Dos Santos

Lewis vs. Dos Santos aims to please with knock out power and skill

Fight fans across the globe are gearing up for a War in Wichita Saturday night, as the one-punch wonder Derrick Lewis prepares to do battle with the Brazilian heavyweight Junior Dos Santos at UFC Fight Night 146 live on ESPN+.

Derrick Lewis is coming into this fight looking to regain momentum after having his 3-win streak violently brought to a halt by Daniel Cormier at UFC 230 last November. Dos Santos, however, stands in Lewis’ way as the -220 favorite. Dos Santos also seems to have the numbers on his side, with ESPN reporting that the Brazilian brawler has stopped a whopping 80 percent of his opponents’ takedown attempts while Lewis has only managed to land around 23 percent of the takedown’s he’s attempted in his UFC career.

Dos Santos also holds the UFC record for the most knockdowns landed by a heavyweight with 13, but Lewis has a shot at scoring a knockdown victory of his own – in four of his last nine fight Dos Santos was knocked to the ground, and in each instance he lost the bout.

Dos Santos and Lewis aren’t the only fighters clashing at UFC Fight Night 146, however, and the pair are sharing the headline with welterweight warriors Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Curtis Millender. Zaleski dos Santos is entering the octagon with an impressive 6-win streak and a record of 20-5-0, winning 70% of his bouts by knockout. Millender, however, is no pushover. The American-born athlete is 3-0 in the UFC with victories over Siyar Bahadurzada, Max Griffin, and Thiago Alves, and he has an impressive 17-3 career record after stints in Bellator, Legacy, Light’s Out, and Fight Club OC. The vast majority of Millender’s wins have been by decision, which accounts for roughly 65% of his previous victories, but keep and eye out for his deadly legwork. Millender won his final two bouts in the Legacy Fighting Alliance via head kick, and he took down Thiago Alves in his UFC debut with a deadly knee to the chin.

When two heavyweights with this kind of punching power face off, its hard to imagine the fight going to decision, and instead becomes a problem of figuring out whether it’ll go to the man who throws the hardest punches or the one who lands the last punch. The odds say Dos Santos, but Lewis can knock out anyone at any time.
That said, if you still want to make a bet but can’t decide on a fighter, at least make an informed decision on where you go to do so. SBD have assembled a list of the safest places for online betting here, all of which score highly in user reviews.
UFc Fight Night Rothwell

Heavyweight Ben Rothwell will also be making a return performance at UFC Fight Night 146, going up against the Bulgarian Sambo specialist Blagoy Ivanov after a three-year absence following an injury and a failed drug test. Ivanov lost against headliner Junior Dos Santos during his UFC debut last July after successfully defending his World Series of Fighting Heavyweight Title three consecutive times, and he will be looking to score the first victory of his UFC career against Rothwell. Rothwell, however, seems determined to shake off the ghosts of the pasts and return to the octagon in a blaze of glory.

Rothwell also lost against Junior Dos Santos in the past, but he has several significant physical advantages over his adversary in Saturday’s fight. With a five-inch height and a seven-inch reach advantage, Rothwell looks great on paper. Having been out of the ring for so long, however, has been known to take its toll and Ivanov has a hard-earned reputation as a grappler and takedown-blocker, meaning that Rothwell has quite a task ahead of him if he wants to reclaim past glory.

Saturday’s preliminary fights are nothing to sneeze at either, and the Women’s Bantamweight match between Yana Kunitskaya and Marion Reneau has many fight fans eager to see the results. Kunitskaya, some may remember, had her UFC debut against the legendary Cris Cyborg, and pounded into submission after just four minutes at UFC 222. The Russian slugger managed to score a victory by decision against Lina Lansberg prior to the infamous Khabib-McGregor fight at UFC 229, and she is looking to finally put her lost to Cris Cyborg behind her at UFC Fight Night 146.

Yana Kunitskaya and Marion Reneau
Yana Kunitskaya and Marion Reneau battle at UFC Fight Night on March 9th, 2019.

Her opponent, Marion Reneau, is a UFC veteran who’s been in the league since 2015 and most recently lost by decision against Cat Zingano last July. She also put up a solid performance against Holly Holm back in 2015, and fought Bethe Correia to a draw during UFC Fight Night 106.

Welterweight Anthony Rocco Martin is also looking to put on a show this Saturday, going head to head with Sergio Moraes. Rocco will be looking to build upon the momentum of the 3-victory win streak he’s currently riding, but the 36-year old veteran Moraes seems determined to bring that streak to a halt. Both men are Brazilian jiu-jitsu experts, and Moraes seems like he has something to prove in this fight.

“I believe I should be fighting ranked athletes. I also believe I should be in the top 15.” Moraes recently told reporters. “My only loss is to Kamaru Usman, who just became the new champion. I finished Neil Magny, who is in the top 15. So I think I already earned a spot there, but I’ll think about this fight first, then I’ll worry about the rankings.”

A win against Martin Saturday night might just mean Moraes’ ticket to the ranked world, so this fight is definitely one to keep our eyes on.

Prelims air at 5pm Eastern Time on ESPN+, and the main card is set to kick off at 8. Don’t miss it!
