‘Under the Silver Lake’ Review: Somewhere Between a Blowjob and an Omelette

0

In David Robert Mitchell’s (It Follows) Under the Silver Lake, Andrew Garfield portrays a jobless and lethargic young man named Sam. He has a tendency of finding obscure messages in common pop culture. Apart from his obsession with conspiracy theories, Sam typically spies on his topless and bird-loving neighbor. He also blatantly ignores the fact that he’s facing eviction in five days for unpaid rent. He is infatuated with a local zine entitled Under the Silver Lake, which mirrors what’s currently transpiring in Los Angeles. Sam develops a crush on his new neighbor named Sarah (Riley Keough), who seems to disappear without a trace overnight. What begins as an investigation into Sarah’s current whereabouts evolves into something deeply rooted in the peculiar.

There’s a lot to digest with Under the Silver Lake. Not only is the story constructed on finding clues and deciphering the bizarre, but the film itself is also loaded with homage to famous music, film, and people. Nirvana, The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo Power, and Spider-Man are just a few references in the film and that doesn’t cover the blatant influence of films such as Rear Window or 2001: A Space Odyssey. What you have to ask yourself, and this is probably what makes the film so polarizing, is if what lays between the admiration for popular culture a worthwhile experience?

How many people wouldn’t want the former Spider-Man as their Peeping Tom?

What you can appreciate is Andrew Garfield’s performance. Sam’s uneventful existence motivates him to find hidden meaning in everyday items. He is a paranoia-driven stalker with a consistent lusting of whatever woman is closest to him. When sex isn’t an option for Sam, he masturbates and somehow this becomes a common theme of the film. The first thing you ever pleasured yourself to is suddenly a conversation piece. Garfield has an unusual demeanor as Sam, but never really comes off as creepy. The method in which the story keeps snowballing into something bigger with more and more connections helps Sam’s case. Sam beats the snot out of a kid who keyed a giant penis ejaculating onto the hood of his black GT Mustang and you only seem to like him more because of it.

You also become invested in Sam’s discoveries. Despite what you feel about Under the Silver Lake as a film, it’s still unpredictable and intriguing even with its 139-minute duration. With its abrupt camera movements, a kamikaze squirrel, a serial dog killer on the loose, pets named after soda, the discovery of saltines and orange juice being one of the most unique combinations ever, a gory dream sequence, animated zine stories, people barking like dogs, the map on the back of a cereal box being the answer to everything, a seething hatred for the homeless, a way too impressive piano medley, and an almost unrecognizable Topher Grace as a reliable friend, Under the Silver Lake feels like it is overloaded with these overwhelmingly precise details that don’t necessarily lead to anything substantial.

Riley Keough as Sarah in, “Under the Silver Lake.”

What’s happening directly in Sam’s world isn’t what matters most in Under the Silver Lake. His mind focuses on Sarah and Los Angeles so much that not having a job or a place to live barely seems to phase him. The outside world is far more interesting to Sam because it’s that, “The grass is always greener,” kind of mentality. Sam obsesses over Sarah because she is the one woman in the film he doesn’t get to sleep with. Having everlasting discussions of what your topless neighbor’s parrot is saying is far more humorous than revealing anything remotely personal. Becoming entangled in this crazy spider’s web of a conspiracy is far more interesting than living a boring existence. Sam makes the most out of nothing, literally. Under the Silver Lake is this spellbinding enigma of a film that is equally stimulating as it is mystifying.

Andrew Garfield as the wonderfully complicated Sam in, “Under the Silver Lake.”

Under the Silver Lake hit DVD and Blu-ray on June 18, 2019 through Lionsgate.

Tyson Fury: The Best Thing to Happen to Boxing

At the moment, the world of boxing certainly has no shortage of superstars: Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Joshua, and Deontay Wilder are just a few of the big names that come to mind.

Yet, one name that stands out is Tyson Fury. Having overcome depression and managing to lose over 100lbs, Fury returned to boxing after a three-year absence and eventually ended up fighting world champion Deontay Wilder last December. The highly anticipated match ended in a shocking split decision draw, but it was enough to signal Fury’s return to boxing’s elite ranks.

However, the inspirational story behind his return isn’t the only reason why Fury is a household name. In fact, below are a few reasons why the self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ just might be the biggest thing in boxing right now.

His Sense of ShowmanshipTyson Fury, Boxing, Gypsy King

Forbes writer Peter Kahn claims that it is Fury’s ability to engage with his audience is what really sets him apart from other boxers. Take for example, Fury’s Apollo Creed-inspired entrance going into his fight with Tom Schwarz and the show he put on after the bell had rung. Fury walked out decked in stars-and-stripes like his hero from the Rocky movies, demolished Schwarz via a second-round TKO and then proceeded to serenade his wife with a rendition of Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing.

Fury’s antics immediately went viral. ESPN’s video of him serenading his wife Paris generated thousands of responses on Twitter on the day of the fight and became one of their top performing video across their social media channels. Despite his All-American get up though, most of his fan base is still English as evidenced by 41% of tweets mentioning him that day coming from the UK. Compare this to just 25% from the US and it’s clear that Fury still has some way to get the American market on side.

Prior to the fight, bwin Boxing News noted how the ‘Gypsy King’ had a chance to make a statement when he walked out in front of a US crowd against the unbeaten German at the MGM Grand Arena – and in true Fury fashion, that’s exactly what he did. No matter what critics may say about his unorthodox style, his ability to entertain and connect with boxing fans on both sides of the pond truly sets him apart.

Tyson Fury’s Got the Skill to Back It Up

Tyson Fury, Boxing

Despite all his antics, you would be mistaken for thinking Fury is all talk. After beating the odds in 2015 to dethrone long-time champion Wladimir Klitschko, Fury held every belt available with the exception of the WBC title (which Wilder would go on to hold). Pundit Bob Arum even cited him as the best heavyweight in the world right now, a mighty compliment coming from someone who’s worked alongside so many boxing legends.

“I’ve been around a long time. And this guy [Fury] is right now easily the best heavyweight in the world,” Arum stated after Fury’s dominant win over Schwarz. “I mean how do you deal with a guy who is 6’9 and moves the way he does? He’s something else and something special.”

What the Future Holds

Tyson Fury, Boxing

After his bout with Schwarz, Fury promised a rematch with Deontay Wilder. This was then backed up by Arum, who said that fans could look forward to the fight happening within “the first quarter of next year”. The promoter even went as far as proclaiming how, from a financial perspective, there was no reason the rematch shouldn’t exceed the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

Though the humongous numbers posted by the megafight will obviously be hard to beat, perhaps there is no better candidate for doing so than another Wilder-Fury bout. After all, the tension between the two only seems to grow with each day and Fury seems to be more than willing to fan the flames.

With his willingness to give the fans a show every single time he enters the ring, more of Tyson Fury may just be what boxing needs right now.

Destiny 2: Season of Opulence and Updates

Destiny 2: Season of Opulence and More!

Destiny 2, Guardians

Written by Jonathan Lee, June 27, 2019. Tweet to: @Writerscube

Get Greedy with Destiny 2: Season of Opulence!

Since June 4, Bungie has unleashed upon the Destiny 2 community the Season of Opulence. And just like before, this Season comes with a challenging and highly-rewarding game mode: The Menagerie. With Opulence, we not only have new loot and weapons to acquire, but we’ve also new quest givers and bounties to further keep us engaged with Destiny 2. While I was already optimistic about Bungie’s idea of giving thematic and story-based seasonal content, there’s always a sense of unexpected satisfaction that comes with seeing how Bungie keeps pushing each Season further. (Find all the June 4 Patch Notes Here!)

In the Season of Opulence, players are able to get greedy with their loot gains thanks to the mechanics behind the Menagerie. Through bounties given by a new quest giver, you will be given a Chalice. And with that Chalice, you can use runes that will help you gain loot in the new 6-player Menagerie. By gaining new runes, you can continually power-up your Chalice before each Menagerie activity and acquire high-level loot at the end! And each rune tells you exactly what that rune will help you get, so you can actually dictate what you get.

Honestly, this is probably one of the best loot-farming events in all of Destiny. Just one round of Menagerie and my Warlock went from having a 711 highest light level in my equipment to having a 721 light level primary weapon (it was an SMG thanks to the rune I had equipped in my Chalice). I already can’t wait to try it again!

Eververse Gets a Facelift

Destiny 2 has also undergone some other updates since the end of May. Some changes were your usual nerfs and boosts to different equipment and abilities. Other changes were more noticeable. One such change was the update to the Eververse shop. Now, the Eververse looks something a bit like an improved version of Anthem’s own microtransaction store. You can see how different cosmetics look, the shop display’s more colorful and engaging, and it’s just an all-around improvement.

Banshee-44

Ah, Banshee-44. That good ol’ gunsmith that you only really visited if you had way too many weapon parts. Now, he’s a quest giver. And not just any quest giver! I’d argue he’s now one of the best because his Daily bounties award equipment mods and enhancement cores. That’s right—enhancement cores.

Banshee-44’s update grants a mainstay Tower character an added purpose. But it also grants players an easier time in upgrading their weapons and gear. This is important! It means players get to spend more time enjoying game modes and activities instead of just trying to farm for upgrade materials. This is an incredible improvement to the game’s quality of life—and I think it shows that Bungie has been listening to the community, observing how engaged players are with activities, and how players have been reacting to the Seasonal content. This brings to mind of how the Season of the Forge became a little contentious as a portion of players felt like reaching the required levels was an insurmountable challenge.

With the combination of Banshee-44’s enhancement core-dropping bounties and Opulence’s loot-heavy activities and bounties—I suspect players should no longer have this leveling issue and will be able to enjoy Destiny 2 in a more fulfilling manner.

Destiny 2, Season of Opulence, Banshee-44

Other Changes to Destiny 2

A fair number of exotic weapons have been affected since the June 4 update. I’m personally a little sad that my Super-charging Phoenix Protocol is a part of it, but a number of Super-generating pieces have been toned down so that it’s not so easy to fully recharge your Super while you’re performing your current Super. It’s not impossible—I’ve done it quite a few times when facing humongous mobs, but you’ll have to work a little harder.

But wait, what’s that cold chill that just ran down your spine? What about Jotunn? Rest easy, Jotunn-players. Your fusion rifle of doom is safe. In fact—it received a PVE boost with Bungie increasing the Impact and DOT damage, while reducing the Detonation damage. Altogether though, Bungie reports that Jotunn should be dealing an “overall 5% increase in total damage”.

Meanwhile, other weapons like Luna’s Howl, Lord of Wolves, and Ace of Spades have all experienced some further balancing changes. Lord of Wolves took a hit to its damage all-around. But perhaps it’s for the best because of how much a full-burst can deal when you score those hits. It’s still quite a devastating weapon and I’ve been enjoying it while tackling the Menagerie.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Destiny 2 continues to present a fantastic example of how a live service game ought to be run. Bungie’s continued to learn from its fans as it progresses through its development roadmap. Quality of life updates are keeping things in balance so that all players can continue to have fun in the various game modes. And more is still to come. Keep an eye out, folks, for the latest expansion that’s coming this Fall, September 17, 2019: “Destiny 2: Shadowkeep”. I’m pumped, folks. We’re heading back to the Moon!! Turbo Knight – Navigators interview

Turbo Knight is the alter ego of Finnish musician Antti Huurinainen.  The follow-up to his album, Rise of The Machines, is in the final stages of production.

Navigators is a twelve track album that features a host of collaborations with other synthwave musicians.  The longer tracks are around the five minute mark with most of the songs coming in at between 3:30 – 4:00 minutes in length.  There is a mixture of instrumental and vocal tracks on the album too, which helps to break up the listening experience nicely.  Along these same principals, there is also a scattering of live instruments overdubbed (saxophone and electric guitar), that refreshes the ear from an overdose of electronica.

Huurinainen recently made a trip to New York City and performed at the St. Vitus music room in Brooklyn, NY.   The nightwave party was hosted by Samuel Valentine and brought together international synthwave acts under one roof.  Turbo Knight was featured with a back-to-back set alongside Straplocked.   Tokyo Rose and Faith in the Glitch were also there creating their unique forms of electronic music.  The event was well attended, with no cover being charged early in the night and a small ticket fee after 11pm.

Now back home in his sunny Finland, Huurinainen caught up with Slickster Magazine via instant messenger to discuss Navigators and how he’s grown as a musician.

Slickster:  How have you grown musically between Navigators and Rise of the Machines?

Turbo Knight: I think quite a bit.  I’ve been testing out of lot of different scales and my mixdowns/masters has improved a lot.  I’ve been building up a different kind of attitude towards making music. I use a lot more time nowadays on finalizing the tracks than i used to. Rise of the Machines was more like an collection of my tracks but with Navigators i tried to make it sound more complete by telling a story with the tracks. TBH. i’ve not grown much musically (25 years of trial and error behind) but i really feel that my mixdowns and masters has become so much better. Navigators is not mixed/mastered by me. Big thanks to Sandman (https://www.facebook.com/sandmantunes/) for the mixing and Viciousi (https://www.facebook.com/Vici0usi/) for the master!

Antti Huurinainen

Slickster:  Seven of the twelve tracks on Navigators are collaborations between yourself and other musicians?  Why so many and how did all of this come about?

Turbo Knight: I love to try things out musically so doing collabs with other people was a natural way of expanding my album to what it is right now. Doing music with people gives you so much more broader vision of what your music can be. Collaborating with so many people can be really time consuming but in the end it was worth it. I love every collab track on the album. The visitors made it go another level.

Slickster: The opening track of Navigators, The Prophecy, really captures the newly developed sound that you’ve been honing.  It is multi-layered, well arranged and has plenty of ear candy that is normative of the synthwave genre.  Can you take us through the process you used to write and create this ethereal trance-like track?

Turbo Knight: My process of writing is usually really chaotic. Usually i have no idea what kind of track i’m starting to do and even the bpm can go up- or downwards during the creation. From what i remember doing the prophecy i started with creating the bass synth it has on Serum. I added the vocal line from Blade Runner to keep myself in mood for the track and kept it. Actually the vocals on the final mix aren’t from the BR, they are voice overs by Straplocked 🙂 At the time of composing the album i had a feeling that i don’t want to use normal synthwave drums for the tracks so i just browsed through my sample library and kept adding drum after drum without giving them too much thought.

Slickster:  The last time we spoke you mentioned that most of your listeners are in the USA.  Also, you just visited NYC and did the gig at St. Vitus.  Has the demographic of your followers changed much or do you still get most of your traffic from the United States?

Turbo Knight: Not much, maybe 40%-50% of my listeners are from USA. England and bigger European countries come next. Finland has also gotten quite big synthwave country. Finnish people are like 4-5th on my most listened countries. Also a lot of new aspiring artists been coming out of Finland lately. We are slowly becoming a hotspot of new Synthwave artists 😉

Turbo Knight live dj set 2

Slickster: Overall, there is an openness to Navigators that feels refreshing.  It says to me, “I’m Turbo Knight and I don’t need to prove myself to anyone.  I can leave a lot of space in the music.”  This really lets the album “breathe” for me and my ears don’t get tired as quickly.   Does this ring true to you?

Turbo Knight: I have pretty sensitive ears myself so I usually try to to cut out more of the harsh frequencies and I really love spacy, flying sounds. It might also have something to do with my uncatholic way of mixing and doing rough cuts where ever i don’t feel fits the mood of the track 🙂

Slickster:  Do you have plans to create a music video to accompany a track on Navigators?

Turbo Knight: I really haven’t thought of doing actual music video for any of the tracks but i’m going to upload whole album to my youtube with same art as the teasers of the album used. My graphical skills are almost nearing zero so it’s a no go for me at least for now.

Turbo Knight live DJ set

Slickster:  Who, in your opinion, is at the top of the synthwave genre right now in terms of creativity?

Turbo Knight: I really can’t name anyone who’s really at the top, i’m more like individual track listener, and trust me, I listen A LOOOOT of synthwave. But to mention few who I really like would be: Nightstop, Droid Bishop, Starcadian and so on. I really like the classic artists of the genre, the OG’s

Slickster:  Where do you see the genre heading in 5 years? 10 years?  Is this only a fad – one that will fade away – or will this 80’s inspired music continue to be relevant for a long time?

Turbo Knight: I think the genre will evolve to sound more like modern electronic music but with flavours from the 80s. It wouldn’t be synthwave without the retro feels? I think synthwave is here to stay, it’s really open genre for creating new sounds and trying out new stuff. One example of synthwave evolving is darksynth, which is slowly turning into a smaller brother of genres like dubstep and edm but still keeping it’s retrowave feel to it. At least i’m going to continue making this style music till i can’t do it anymore 🙂

Slickster:  What’s your favorite part about Finland?  What’s one thing you would change if you could?

Turbo Knight: Summer in Finland! Summer is special here because of the long and dark winter. Everything turns so green that it’s instant cure for your soul that catched the cold at the dark winter. There’s not much what i would change but if we got rid of fall i would be glad. I hate rain because i’m working outside. (Hello to all steel fixers out there!)

Slickster:  Best of luck with Navigators and all of your promotion with the album.  Is there anything you’d like to mention that we didn’t get to talk about in the interview?

Turbo Knight: Thanks mate! I wan’t to thanks everyone involved in the making of the album, you are great and know who you are! I also want to thank everyone at Megacorp for being supportive and listening to my mixes all over again for half a year. Thanks for the precious feedback! Also big thanks to my loving wife and my family for letting me do my music in our living room corner! 😀 Have a great summer everyone and stay rad and retro!

Small Streams Big Dreams: iR528

ir528 Profile Photo

There are some people out there who bleed passion. The kind of people who fucking die for their craft. That’s exactly who we’re talking to in this episode of Small Streams Big Dreams, with iR528, A.K.A Ivan. This is a man with a nose for the wrestling world and dreams bigger than a world championship. A champion of the fans of the squared circle, Ivan is a guy you’d love to grab a beer with. And maybe a chair for busting skulls too. It’s time to talk to the man behind the madness, in this installment of…

Small Streams Big Dreams: iR528 (You can call him Ivan)

How long have you been streaming, and what got you into it?

I found Twitch at the end of High School. It started from watching MrBlack0us81’s DayZ Dairies and wanting to get the game but I had no PC. I was on my Xbox one and saw Twitch and watch some DayZ streams. Then I eventually found other streamers playing games like Outlast. Watching them and how fun it was being in chat made me want to do it as well, but it wasn’t until November 10, 2014, I did a Yugioh stream on my potato computer and it went really really well from being around streams and being a mod for almost a year people came to my horrible first stream and from there I knew I was gonna give twitch everything I got.

What’s your style like as a streamer?

My style? Honestly, its variety but I know that term on Twitch now is dying out and people want to focus on one thing. But I don’t. My style is variety I’ll do it all as long as I am having fun with the games or with my friends. My style is just doing me. I never wanna lose focus on being me and doing what I wanna do on twitch so it’s just that real me dialed up to 11. As long as I can bring people to enjoy the gameplay cause I pride myself on being very good at every game I play and laugh cause I also have ALWAYS wanted to be some form of entertainer and Twitch my style is always to play good and bring the comedy even if it’s raging at games. I know that answer is all over the place sorry

What would you classify as “your thing?”

My “thing”? if we are talking about games my thing would be shooting games cause I yell BINK when I’m sniping and I’ve done it even before I even knew about Twitch. This is where I step in for our friend iR528. What he hasn’t told you about yet, is perhaps the most glorious digital wrestling federation of all time: World Championship Alliance.

WCA: iR528’s Brainchild

Grace by iR528

Let’s get this straight: I LOVE wrestling. When John Cena would come out and tell his opponents about their “fine speech” I’d be like “OOHHHHHHHHH!”. When Kane would be out to chokeslam someone to hell, I’d bring the noise. And when Randy Orton was out to be a slithery snake, I’d pop for an RKO OUTTA NOWHERE! And let me tell you this: I get the same kind of hype when I tune in to watch the mayhem that is WCA. Featuring fully customized (usually) characters, iR528’s dirty little secret walks the walk on screen. All the characters have distinct looks, personalities, and the storylines are actually interesting. (More than what can be said right now in the WWE.) If my salivating doesn’t make enough sense to you, here’s the down low on the official website:

World Championship Alliance (WCA) is a custom show that has original custom made characters. Some characters are people on Twitch or chat to give people with no knowledge of Pro Wrestling characters someone to root for. The people with characters are also given the opportunity to voice their own characters and cut promos that are edited and added to the show. The WCA Universe aren’t just A.I. The WCA Universe is YOU. You are the WCA Universe you not only watch but you have a voice with in chat commands to activate crowd Cheers and Boos. Every match is also set with a betting question which you can answer who will win the match and win in chat currency to do more.

Here’s the intro for the WCA show that starts off every show:

Describe a typical stream for you?

A typical stream for me would be turning on the stream and whether I’m with people or not its always in the moment of wanted to get on and play and entertain and be goofy or rage hoping someone finds it funny. I’m very passionate about gaming, so no matter what I play I’m always very vocal. No matter who is there or not, so that’s pretty much every stream I always want my gameplay to show so I have THAT moment and hope someone would see it. And even if not live then a highlight or clip or in a video I edit. So I’m always focused on the game I play when I stream having a good time and trying hard. So I guess ima try hard when I stream but it comes from loving games and wanting to be good and show that. You know?

What are the goals you have?

My goals. Honestly, I guess one major important goal I have on twitch is to bring people more awareness about Pro Wrestling. It might sound weird but of all the things I have seen or done on Twitch making my Pro Wrestling show, I took a big risk because pro wrestling was DEAD on twitch. Yea there were people playing the game and had their thing but it’s still not there. Now you got wrestling personalities on Twitch or gaming so they brought people from wrestling here yea but I want to bring people interest in Pro Wrestling. There has always been something similar to Wrestling and gaming.

The outsiders the nerds, when you told people you were into gaming or wrestling you would get looked at differently. I want to make wrestling fun on Twitch because it’s not fun with WWE anymore and even the fans of that know it. I’m proud to say I got women, old fans and new fans on board with my wrestling show HELL even content creators to lead me their voices and looks to the show by having THEM as the stars and have them voice act themselves and its been so fun and the support of people hearing and joining have been so amazing i really view that as the only goal I’m focused on right now.

Its something I’m doing and still working on and it’s going so great and it’s not that popular…YET. But the interest is there and I’m trying HARD to improve every single day and draw more people to it for the sake of entertainment.

Additionally, fans will see an intriguing featherweight bout featuring former Bellator 135-pound champion Eduardo Dantas (21-6) making the leap to 145-pounds in an attempt to hand Juan Archuleta (21-1) the first loss of his Bellator career, while Ricky Bandejas (11-2) welcomes unbeaten Patrick Mix (10-0) at bantamweight.

Preliminary action for Bellator 222 is also must-see and features many of Bellator’s rising stars. Those who tune in will see bouts highlighted by Aaron Pico (4-2) versus Adam Borics(12-0) at 145-pounds, as well as a second inter-promotional contest pitting Rena of Rizin (8-2) against Lindsay VanZandt (5-1) in a 112-pound catchweight fight. Bellator 222 will also see the return of “The Heat” to MSG, when world champion boxer Heather Hardy (2-1) faces Taylor Turner (3-5) at flyweight. Familiar faces in Mike Kimbel (2-1), Robson Gracie Jr. (1-0) and Haim Gozali (10-6) will all also compete, while former The Ultimate Fighter participant Phil Hawes (4-2) will make his promotional debut. Lastly, it was recently announced that undefeated Taekwondo Master Valerie Loureda (1-0) will make her sophomore appearance when she welcomes Larkyn Dasch (0-1) to the Bellator cage on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

Viviette Review for Nintendo Switch

viv6 by DYA Games

Dark Passions

Viviette, by DYA Games, takes work to create. Viviette gets inspiration from so many places. The creators always surprise me. It is two Spanish brothers, in this case, Alberto and Dani. Follow their Twitter and other sites. You see their passion for all things games and pixel art.

That is how you get the game you want. In this case, Nintendo Switch and DYA Games bring a title that shrinks a massive horror, and puzzle, experience into a sweet 16-bit shell. However, is this game for you?

In The Mire

You play Jules. Jules explores the island, with his sister, Felice, and other friends. You all plan to leave the island, and home to Neuville’s Mansion, by boat. Felice, and friends, goes missing.

viv2 by DYA Games

You wake up at night. Jules finds himself on the dark island, with an inconsistent, alchemical, lamp, in search of them. Viviette is a survival horror game, from start to finish.

It is just thinking on your feet. You move your character with the cross pad or left the analog stick. Jules interacts with the environment and characters with the A Button.

Hold the B Button and the cross pad, or left analog stick, to make Jules run. The X Button accesses your items inventory in the game. The scheme for this game is simple. The sound design makes it unbearable.

Ear Chills

This game starts as a mystery. You find yourself in the hospital, during the day. A police officer asks you what happened at Neuville’s Mansion, and the island. You reflect on the murky past events.

viv3 by DYA Games

Jules remembers he searches for his friends in the day. You go unconscious after a minor incident. The rest of the game is at night. The trees on the island shift, and crawl.

There are so many dark spaces and shadowy movements throughout this title once the night falls. Every inch of Neuville’s Mansion, inside and out, has vivid sound and motion.

This reverberates in the speakers of both the Nintendo Switch, in portable mode, and on television. This is what makes this experience work best.

You hear Jules as he runs, pants, wheezes, and overexerts himself. As you walk through Neuville’s Mansion, you can hear footsteps that follow you. Dead animals and carcasses draw loud and active flies. The atmosphere of this game amazes. Viviette just has to be the right game for the moment.

Cold, Specific Inspiration

The reality is Viviette is in the right genre to scare you. Viviette was going to be my 16-bit Capcom’s Resident Evil. Viviette just has no action but works off reaction.

viv4 by DYA Games

It hovers close to Climax Studios, and Konami Digital Entertainment’s Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, for Nintendo Wii.

Viviette resembles Human Entertainment’s Clock Tower series. The game makes you work to solve puzzles under duress.

Backtrack and discover that room with just the right clue for another room you are in, Viviette has the goods. Do you want to avoid the monsters and solve their mystery?

Viviette has it. However, if you want to handle a gun with limited, or unlimited, ammo for those monsters, Viviette does not provide.

Conclusion

viv5 by DYA Games

Viviette is an experience I would want on my Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It has the scares. This game makes you jump. Neuville’s Mansion and the island are just alive.

The puzzles are hard, but work together and toward an enjoyable conclusion.

Viviette is just not an action piece. This does not take away from the experience but makes you shift focus quickly. Otherwise, you just die, often.

Slickster Magazine @ PopCon Indy 2019 Day 2

0

Holy shit our feet are killing us. These past two days at PopCon Indy 2019, we have put about thirty miles inside the convention center alone. As we ice our feet down, enjoy some White Castle fried pickles, it’s time to decompress on the day. It’s hilarious actually because we had a discussion with the guys from Swipe Scape and we agreed that when you get to a certain point, you can’t even remember the last thirty seconds. So now it’s time to recount the last twelve hours.

PopCon Indy Highlight: Nights of Yore’s Epic Encounter

Credit to Nights of Yore Instagram

We just need to talk some RPG real quick. The team from Nights of Yore have been here at Indy PopCon for the past few years. And they have never disappointed. They’ve been improving and improving and improving their game set up. For those of you who don’t know, Nights of Yore is a an RPG system that completely streamlines the entire system. To quote yesterday’s article:

…It makes your characters for you. It does all your rolls for you. And It does story progression automatically, it’s just the ultimate system for anybody interested. This can turn the several hour processes that can be developing your character for the campaign, to just two presses of the phone. Holy shit.

Let’s take a look at this picture why don’t we? You see that table there? It’s legit a $10,000 table that they hand made a week before the event.

Indy popcon 2019 Nights of yore figure
This was my character: Shaq Daddy. He’s like 8 feet tall in the game, and has the WORST luck with defense rolls.

There are two screens inlaid on the table for the players to see, as well as the DM’s personal screen system via a connected tablet. Inside it contains dozens of different pictures and enemies. And in our most recent playthrough, I got to be really social with the enemies of the game in Nights of Yore. In the campaign, we were doing some dungeon crawling for a local rich sorcerer to retrieve a book. (As one normally would.) In it, we needed to decode a dangerous message in a crystal ball. Shaq Daddy (My 8-foot high elf Hunter) decided that the best course of action was to shoot it with my arrow. Upon breaking the crystal ball, the big bad end game boss reared its head. (Think a sphinx, but more assholery).

After a long and drawn out battle that saw a Tiefling proceed to nut-kick the boss for 46 damage, we took home the W. And then we needed to actually, you know find the book. After deciding to not sell the book back to the evil sorcerer, we all could feel the story of the next campaign already bubbling underneath, as we sought to destroy the cursed book. So, needless to say, I’m already absolutely hooked on this game. If you can, be a part of the full release. It is the best instant app for all things RPG and gaming. Seriously, it’s just… amazing.

Panels at PopCon: We Need to Talk

Man… I’m not gonna lie. They were kinda just alright. That isn’t to decry the effort that these people put in, but after a full day of panels, I can say that the ones I attended were only okay at best. And the worst one had to be the one about (*Not going to say which, because that’d be a dick move*) where it was so bad, 7 people left within the first five minutes. The rest had left about ten minutes later. The biggest problem that we saw for the panels (and other unnamed sources agree) was the lack of support.

PopCon Indy has a great community with truly dedicated individuals. You can really tell that the people who are helping make PopCon truly care about their hobbies, and interests. PopCon is their baby. But the organization behind the panels leaves something to be desired. At least, the way in which that panels are selected, prepared, and organized does. How many times are panels going to have people slowly walk out because the panel host didn’t actually prepare? Will we just have to expect half the panels to have no direction? And what about the process for submitting for a panel? Is it really as simple as “We’ll pick the idea we like the best”? Because here’s the thing: ALL the panels SOUNDED awesome. Only about half managed to live up to most of the expectations. The others? Ranged from blegh, to meh.

We get it. It’s hard. Panels are a tough sell that can be super intimidating. But the people coming to these limited events deserve the best panels possible. And here’s my suggestion: Have panel submissions be stricter, with a video example of part of what the panel will look like. Let us SEE what the panel is going to be as a requirement. Alright, that’s enough bitching. Thanks for reading guys! PopCon Indy 2019 has been one hell of a ride!

Kickass Kickstarter: Bellum: of Mutants and Men

Some things just go together. Like peanut butter and jelly. Beer and Pizza Rolls. Magic: the Gathering and Chess!… Wait, Magic: The Gathering and Chess? Well, yes, of course, it goes perfect together! The tactics and strategy of the game of kings, and the rich colorful worlds that exist in Magic: The Gathering go together oh so perfectly in this edition of Kickass Kickstarter: Bellum: of Mutants and Men.

Bellum: of Mutants and Men: Your Goblins are Going Down

Taking place on a 5×5 grid, it’s your job to build your team of soldiers, mutants, and mercenaries to destroy the enemy keep. Each turn you will add one card to your hand, and the number of cards you have in your hand will be added to the available summoning points. You’ll use the summoning points to summon as many, or as few, monsters as you choose. Next, you’ll use your available action points to move your units into position and attack your enemy. In order to win, you’ll need to reduce the number of hit points for the enemy keep to 0. But watch out, while your knight unit is demolishing their keep, you can be flanked from behind.

Why Bellum: of Mutants and Men Works

The most impressive thing about the game for the Slickster Magazine team is its ease of play. You can really get into the game with minimal instructions. Your units only move and attack left, right, up, and down. You summon monsters based on the points, and you just try to destroy your enemy. When we found out about the game while going through Indy PopCon we were immediately hooked on the game. Even though we had a lot of work to do, we decided to stop doing the job that we are paid for, and sit down for a few rounds.

The game has that awesome combination of quick action during each round, and a long term goal to aim towards. So while you might reaallly want to bumrush the enemy, you have to watch out for that slick bastard’s end of the game rush. Each round you’re building up your victory to a glorious crescendo! The fool! They know not what is going to happen to them! They’ve fallen right into your trap just like you had predicted they would and now your plan shall unfold before you aaaaaaaaaand you just lost. The entire game can begin and end in a snap of the fingers.

Those Goblins Might be Ugly, But They Look Good

The game is just really nice to look at. The artist who did all of the work on the cards is a tattoo artist who managed to create a charming, and gory style. Further borrowing from the chess roots of its development, the game is all in black and white from the pieces to the cards to the board. And it just looks fucking awesome. The detailed and gory looks of the cards help create a story for the game beyond the one you are building against the enemy. So while you’re getting ready to figure out which cards will lift you to victory, take a moment to appreciate the art on the cards as well.

If you want to support the game (and you should) go here for the Kickstarter.

Slickster Magazine @ PopCon Indy 2019 Day 1

Well shit, it looks like it’s not Indy PopCon anymore. It’s PopCon Indy now we guess. Because that makes sense right? Totally makes sense. 100%… Alright, now that I’m done being a pedantic little shit let’s talk some god damn turkey! Actually, we’re going to talk about our experiences at PopCon Indy, but I’m being a pedantic little shit again so I’ll stop.

PopCon Indy 2019: A Change of PaceIndy PopCon

This year we saw a smaller amount of game developers, unfortunately. In fact, there were so few game developers, that we decided that this year we will not be doing awards for the event because there just aren’t enough games for us to be able to sustain everything. But that being said, we’ve had a great crop of games for you to check out for all you nerds. We’ve seen a return by Dodeca System games, as well as some other fan favorites like Swipe Scape.  These games have seen continuous improvements from the past few years. And while I know that I won’t be getting my name anywhere near the leaderboards, the game remains as addictive as ever.

We’d also like to give some special shoutouts to two, especially awesome games if ya don’t mind. That would be the tabletop RPG system Nights of Yore, and the awesome board game that is Bellum. (That would be Latin for War by the way.) So what are these awesome and amazing games?

Nights of Yore

How many of you are fucking tired of your Dungeons and Dragons campaign just going to shit? It’s been 3 years of just going and going and going… and going. It takes forever, building characters is a bitch… it just takes the fun out of the whole point of doing tabletop RPGs. Well, don’t you worry because Nights of Yore has turned the whole process into a streamlined application for you on your mobile device. And by streamlined I mean: It makes your characters for you. It does all your rolls for you. It does story progression automatically, it’s just the ultimate system for anybody interested. This can turn the several hour processes that can be developing your character for the campaign, to just two presses of the phone. Holy shit.

Bellum

Bellum is what happens when you merge the majesty of chess with the brutality of Magic: The Gathering. Why would MTG be considered a brutal game? Well, excuse me for thinking a game that involves the mutual attempts at utter destruction for the enemy to be brutal. Magic don’t fuck around y’all. But then again, neither does Bellum. A card game developed on the idea of moving your team into the right position to decimate your enemy’s lair? Awww yeah. It’s a good time for whoever didn’t lose their shit in the middle of the game.

This is just a very small instance of some of the amazing things that we’ve seen so far this year at PopCpn Indy. So you know what that means right? It means that it’s time for you to stay on the site because we’ll be releasing a lot more information and images, articles, podcasts, and maybe even videos of everything. Thanks for listening guys, Slickster will be back soon!

Tips for online dating

A man’s guide to entering the gene pool in the 21st century.

Online dating has been a game changer.  In previous generations meeting your potential life mate at work or school was commonplace. This is no longer the status quo.  The EEOC reports a staggering 12.5K sexual harassment cases filed every year since 2010.  Men and women are much more careful to ask a coworker out in the era of litigation.  Social media has also stripped any secrecy about a potential date’s private life.  Women and men can friend someone on Facebook and see where they work, who their friends are, their interests, family and just about anything else.

Forget 90’s movies with innocent stories

You've Got Mail 1998 Movie PosterIn the perverse underbelly of the online world, aka r/incel or MGTOW movements, anything goes.  With our Creeper Hunter series, we looked at some vigilantes who expose online predators. that doesn’t mean that many people aren’t successfully using online dating to meet their ideal partners.  While online dating has come a long way since the AOL days and the novelty of receiving an ‘electronic mail’, online dating etiquette has not.   Sending cell phone shots of your genitals, aka ‘dick pics’ as they are commonly known, probably isn’t the best way to get a girl’s attention.   If you disagree check out this game (Cobra Club), where the sole mission objective is to do just that.  Seriously.

Tips for online dating

The importance of Images

Everyone knows a picture is worth a thousand words.  This is equally true for online dating.  According to the blog on Ok Cupid, “Adding one photo gets you at least 2x the likes (and your likes increase if you add more photos). Plus, it gives people a better idea of who you are.”  Make sure the photo is current and honest. (See the above social media).  If you post that one photo of you when you ripped like BEASTMODE and swimming with sharks off the coast of Bora Bora, it’s going to send up red flags.  Have a beer belly?  Lost your hair?  Might as well show the accurate you, because when you finally meet up, she is going to find out anyway.  That being said, before you start posting photos a little grooming and a few sit ups never hurt anyone. Here’s are tailor made Barfight Workout for you get off your lazy ass and start working out.

Women are equally guilty of this as well.  Judged in society more on their looks than men according to many researchers, women will carefully choose which photos they will add to their online dating profiles.  It may be an outdated photo from a trip to Las Vegas, or an older photo when they were fifteen pounds lighter.  A dead give away is an online profile where the woman only has one pose; holding the cell phone high above her head and looking up.

Tips for online dating
Guys aren’t fooled by the woman who only has selfies holding the camera way above her and looking up. It’s a dead give away she’s overweight.

Starting communication

If we didn’t make it clear with the photos you choose for your profile, HONESTY, is important to successful online dating.  Now, assume you didn’t come across as horribly desperate and you’ve managed to strike up a conversation.  This is where RESPECT comes into play and you’ll be staging ground rules that will define the remainder of the relationship.

Dudes, the two most common things you can do to turn off a girl you just met are, being too clingy and texting her thousand times a day, or being a total perv.  If she is busty, of course she already knows that and probably very used to guys staring at her.  Don’t immediately beg her to send bikini photos.  You’ll get dropped faster than a Mike Tyson uppercut dropped opponents.  And of fuck’s sake, successful guys are busy. They don’t have time to text non-stop.  Women are attracted to successful, confident men.

Gals, we don’t mind chasing you some, but don’t make the game impossible to win.  If a girl is snobbish or too distant, he’s likely going to move on.  Where as pornography may be corroding what men think the ideal woman is, too much Hollywood and Netflix is equally destroying what women think men should be.   Not every man will be over 6′, own a beach house in Malibu, and be a veterinary surgeon.  If the woman wants to take charge of the communication, let be known right up front that she’ll be running the show, and if he’s not okay with that, it’s best to move on.

Know thyself

When starting any project, including online dating, have the finish line in mind from the very beginning. Take some time to reflect why you want start a relationship and what do you want achieve.  You may want to ask yourself some basic questions:

  • Is long distance okay, or do I want to meet someone locally?
  • Do I have the time, income and emotional collateral to date someone?
  • Will the relationship be sexual or ‘just friends’?

One caveat here; Having a game plan and goal in mind is stalwart and time tested advice, but love is fickle and affairs of the heart don’t always fit into nice little lists.  Being spontaneous and unpredictable may work in your favor here.  Taking some chances now again may be exactly what you need to break out of rut or lead you in a new direction that you hadn’t previously thought of.

Too good to be true

Finally, when it comes to online dating, Buyer Beware.  If an online profile looks too good to be true, it probably is.  So if you happen to ‘stumble’ across a 23 year old supermodel who is independently wealthy, owns her own gun manufacturing conglomerate, and is requesting all of your passwords to your bank accounts… GTFO!   If your ‘spidey sense’ starts tingling to the early onset of BULLSHIT, then it may be a good time to pullout.  Speaking of pulling out, if you think you’re lacking in the cumshot department you might want to read, How to Shoot A Huge Load.
