Homeworld 3: In Something New, a Classic Series Returns

Just announced yesterday on August 30, 2019, Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive have announced that there will be another installment to the revolutionary 3D-combat space RTS series of Homeworld. The last we had seen of the Homeworld Universe was the prequel installment, Deserts of Kharak. Now, Homeworld 3  will propel the narrative forward to after the events of Homeworld and Homeworld 2. And what better way to kick it off than with a tantalizing trailer?

S'jet, Kharak, Homeworld
It all began on a desert planet called Kharak. It all began with the name S’jet.

A New Adventure with a Familiar Feel

The first things you might notice in that trailer is the familiar artistic direction and music. That’s because Blackbird Interactive is at the helm, and they were founded by the Art Director of the original Homeworld game, Rob Cunningham. The DNA of the beloved series indeed lives on, at least aesthetically. But accordingly to the description in the Homeworld 3 YouTube trailer, we can look forward to “a gripping continuation of the story, fully 3D combat, and the classic RTS elements you expect”. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like good things to come!

You also might’ve noticed that the trailer involves a very familiar sight that we last saw in Homeworld 2… the Eye of Aarran. The enigmatic gate that leads to a whole network of hyperspace gates, essentially propelling our protagonists into a potentially galactic-faring race instead of just a people looking for their home. This is their Golden Age as well as their true rebirth after their self-rediscovery.

Or is it?

What Can We Expect of Homeworld 3?

Right now there’s nothing indicating what challenges we’ll encounter. Surely though, there will be more than just jealous Taiidan emperors, nanobot parasites, and prophecy-bent fanatical space warlords wanting to keep the People of Hiigara down. There’s a whole galaxy of possibilities now being opened up to the Hiigaran narrative. Given what experienced players have faced up to now, my money’s on more alien foes to spice things up, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if old foes appear to try taking the power of the hyperspace network for themselves.

New to Homeworld?

If you’re new to the series, but you love some good space combat, Homeworld is easily a perfect choice. It’s more involved than the 4X Space Sims in that you command your fleet with the precision of a traditional RTS, rather than commanding fleets to go about and do their thing. With that, there’s high drama in every battle. The narrative lens is focused enough that you’ll get to follow characters, good and bad. And the best part, of course, is seeing all the space ships in amazing, close-up detail!

Homeworld, Mothership

The narrative of the Homeworld series has mainly revolved around the Kushan people seeking their true homeworld of Hiigara and defending it. After discovering on the desert planet of Kharak that they hadn’t always lived on the desert world. Driven by a newfound purpose of self-discovery, the Kushan became united, and took to space to find their homeworld. However, they would quickly run into the Taiidan, an enormous empire that sought to keep the Kushan on Kharak. Eventually, the Kushan fight their way to their homeworld of Hiigara and become the Hiigarans once more.

In-between Homeworld and Homeworld 2, we experience a short chapter of new-Hiigaran history in Homeworld Cataclysm. In this expansion, a parasitic nanobot scourge called The Beast throws the Hiigaran civilization into disarray. Turns out the Taiidan Empire survived in the form of the nasty Taiidan Imperialists. But thanks to the good Taiidan Republic, the Hiigarans had the support to defeat the Imperialists. Unfortunately, how canonical this chapter is is still in debate.

A hundred years after the first Homeworld game, Homeworld 2 continues the story with the Hiigarans encountering the Vaygr. This new enemy was led by a maniacal warlord who believes himself to be a Chosen One of sorts. But a climatic battle for the fate of Hiigara leads to the defeat of the Vaygr and the grand discovery of the Hyperspace Network.

Final Thoughts

A lot of Homeworld fans have been waiting to see what happens next. And indeed, it’s been quite a bit of waiting. But whether you’re an old veteran or a newcomer, the Homeworld series has been a gift to the RTS and space combat genres. If you haven’t played any of them, I highly recommend you grab the Homeworld Remastered Collection and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak (Both on Steam sale until September 3). Along with giving the Space RTS genre the boost it needed, the series packs an engaging story, and vibrant art and musical direction. Then comes the addicting gameplay that any RTS-fan will recognize instantly. So get ready, folks… the Space RTS is about to take off, again!

Retro Mania: The Most Surprising Comebacks

Humanity tends to feel romantic about what once was. It’s a fallacy, of course – our brain tends to dampen the edge of the negative experiences and enhance the positive ones. That’s why, for example, we love to remember the movies we saw as children but find them overly dumb when we see them as adults.

When it comes to music, though, our memory does a much better job: it mixes the feelings we had when listening to a song and brings them back whenever we hear them again. This is probably why old music, in general, never goes out of style. It is not surprising for bands and artists with an extended discography to re-emerge after a hiatus of years and go on another successful “farewell tour” around the world. It can be surprising, in turn, when one-hit wonders and long-forgotten teen stars make a comeback, riding the retro bandwagon – like the artists and acts below.

New Kids On The Block

The band “New Kids On The Block” was a major pop sensation in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, earning the prestige of two American Music Awards and numerous certified platinum albums. Things went great until 1994 when they transitioned to a more mature look and sound. After years of filling stadiums, the band promoted their album “Face the Music” at smaller venues, then ultimately disbanded shortly after the tour.

The band was non-existent for more than a decade. Then, in 2008, they re-emerged, recording a new album that topped the Billboard Top Pop Albums Charts. Then, after a surprise one-off collaboration with another massively successful boy band, the “Backstreet Boys” in 2011, they decided to stay together for a year and go on tour around the world for a total of 80 shows. The band is active to this day, releasing their last EP in 2017.

Aerosmith

In the 70s and early 80s, Boston’s Aerosmith was a radio-ready rock act.  Coming up in the smoky bar room scene and eventually earning a top place on the charts, Aerosmith had some huge hits.  Lead by sexy frontman Steven Tyler and the catchy guitar riffs of Joe Perry, Aerosmith had tremendous success with songs like Dream On and Toys in The Attic.

All this success cursed the band with the major trappings of rock n’ roll.  Sex, drugs and…. more drugs eventually started taking its toll on the band.  It went from bad to worse in the mid-1980s and most people wrote Aerosmith off.  However, the band sobered up, and put aside their personal differences to create a string of memorable, MTV-friendly, rock hits, including Love in an Elevator, Ragdoll, and the 1991 hit, Living on the Edge.  Later in the 1990s, Aerosmith would once again top the charts with the love song I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing from the action movie Armageddon.

No bad for a bar band from Boston.

Backstreet Boys

One can’t speak of boy bands without mentioning Backstreet Boys, perhaps the most successful formation ever. The band formed in 1993 in the US and took the world by storm, melting the hearts of girls all over the world for years. For nine years, to be exact. The band went on a two-year hiatus in 2002 and struggled to return to the spotlight for years to come. Needless to say, they were never the same, especially after Kevin Richardson left the band. Richardson finally returned to the band in 2012, followed by the band’s 20th anniversary and the indispensable world tour. This year, the band has released its ninth studio album (they are currently on tour promoting it) and they are working on their first holiday album. For boy band fans, this is easily one of their most surprising comebacks of its kind.

Guns n Roses, Most Surprising Comebacks, Rock n Roll
Guns n Roses in Hong Kong | Source: GunsNRoses.com

Guns ‘n’ Roses

GnR was perhaps the most iconic rock band of the late 1980s and the early 1990s pushed into the spotlight by the unmistakable voice of frontman Axl Rose and lead guitarist Slash. The band was on a roll until 1994 when they toned it down a bit, recording only sporadically. Most original members left the band – Guns went on recording material with Axl as the only original member in the lineup.

The following years were a turmoil for the band. They were still popular in some circles but a shadow of its former self, releasing albums, touring, and not shying away from controversy. Then, the band reunited Axl, Slash, and Duff McKagan for a one-off show on the stage of the Coachella festival in 2016, with AC/DC guitarist Angus Young also joining the gig (Axl later joined AC/DC as a touring vocalist after singer Brian Johnson stopped touring due to health issues). The Coachella one-off was followed by a tour that was a major success (the fourth highest-grossing tour of all time). Today, GnR is back in the studio, recording a new album that will finally reunite Axl, Slash, and McKagan.

Rapid Response

A crash course in racing safety

Documentary film highlights the history of emergency rescue and medical care within the sport of car racing.

Gunter Shaldach’s red ultra-fast race car came around the curve at speeds topping 160 MPH. It was about this time he realized that his brakes weren’t functioning. Shaldach’s car smashed the driver directly in front of him, and then careens out of control towards the race track barrier. Luckily there is some loose debris that helps to slow the car before the impact with fence. Traveling well over 100 MPH still, Shaldach impacts the barrier headfirst and the car flips over the fence.

The crowd is stunned and the announcers shout with excited voices.  How could anyone have survived a crash like that?

“It wasn’t that big of deal,” Shaldach says of the 2011 Grand-AM Road America Race crash eight years after the event. “I just got out of my car and walked away.”

If Shaldach’s crash had happened 30 years earlier, at the least he would have had shattered every single one of the bones in his lower legs and suffered a major concussion. However, due to the improvements in race car emergency rescue and critical medical care over the past five decades, Shaldach was able to walk away unscathed from the jaw-dropping crash.

Rapid Response

Rapid Response is a new documentary film from directors and executive producers Michael William and Miles Roger Hinze. It chronicles the life work of two doctors (and many others who helped them) Dr. Stephen Olvey and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Terry Trammell as they innovate life saving techniques to improve high-speed racing safety.

The documentary arrives in select theaters on September 6, 2019. The film is unrated, however there are some intense scenes of car crashes. The documentary does an excellent job of capturing the violence of some of the most horrific crashes in racing history without exploiting the more gory elements of the death and destruction that ensued.

In addition to the in-depth interviews with Trammell and Olvey, Rapid Response also hears about the car crashes from hall-of-fame drivers as well. The film features interviews with current and former race car drivers, including those who dared to take the track during the darker days of the sport like Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser, Al Unser, Parnelli Jones, Rick Mears, Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, and Chip Ganassi.

Dr. Stephen Olvey

Beginning in 1966, Dr. Stephen Olvey (Associate Professor of clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine) embarked on a journey that would define his career: to pioneer a team of doctors and track safety specialists who specialize in racing safety. His work fundamentally altered the history of motorsports. Rapid Response is the visualization of his memoir, Rapid Response: My Inside Story as a motor racing life saver.

It is one thing to read text on a page, it is wholly different when you witness the actual footage of some of the defining moments of his career.

Death and injury was an expected part of a race car driver’s life

2019_05_05-Rapid_Response-Snake_Pit-1920x1080In the early days of car racing, getting hurt or even killed was job hazard that drivers accepted.  “Up until the 1960’s… drivers were dying at an alarming rate,” says Olvey.

Legendary racer and 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner, Parnelli Jones, gives a heartfelt description of his most difficult time in racing, the 1964 Indianapolis 500. In the immediate aftermath of a major racing fatality, Jones could see that a tremendous crash had taken place. Two gasoline powered cars collided and a huge orange fireball exploded. The scene was obscured by thick black smoke, but it was obvious that a tragedy had taken place.

Parnelli Jones in Rapid Response
“I remember distantly coming of out of turn two…. and it looked like the whole grandstand was on fire,” says Jones. “Honest to God, if there had been an exit at turn three I would have taken it, because I didn’t want to accept what I was goin’ to see when I came around the next turn.”

Listening to Jones describe the scene, while the high-def images of the crash are displayed on screen alongside an excellently crafted musical score create a surreal impression that most documentary films strive for but never reach.

Dr. Terry Tramell

Terry Trammell, M.D., serves as a safety consultant to INDYCAR and is a longtime member of the INDYCAR Safety Team.
Dr. Trammell has been active in providing trackside medical care since 1973, including serving as orthopedic consultant to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and director of medical services for CART. He is a founding member of the International Council of Motorsports Science and a founding fellow of the FIA Institute for Motorsport Safety. Dr. Trammell is a sought-after lecturer on spinal injuries and conditions, and has authored numerous articles published in professional journals.

The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors Brings Classic Gaming Back

ninjasav2 by ININ Games and Taito Corporation

Use Your Quarters Carefully

The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors looks like a decent sequel. It comes from Taito’s Ninja Warriors, from 1987. In the first place, I have to admit, the game intimidated me.

In a standup arcade, most games used one screen for play. After all, Nintendo Switch will use its small screen or your television for various game perspectives for The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors. Again, The Ninja Warriors, from Taito, used three screens. Moreover, this perspective offered players an early, widescreen, experience. Moreover, a whole arcade could watch you play.

ninjasav1 by ININ Games and Taito Corporation

Therefore, I did not play it and found the game Vigilante instead. I did play the updated version of The Ninja Warriors on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

The game was vibrant, offered a stiff challenge, and required two people for play.

The Real News

ININ Games, a publishing label of United Games GmbH, and Taito will release The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors, the sequel to the arcade game. The game will come out in Europe on August 30. Also, it will release in North America on October 15. Furthermore, while it will be on Sony’s Playstation 4, Ninja Saviors will also be on Nintendo Switch.

ninjasav3 by ININ Games and Taito Corporation

ININ wishes to apologize to players for a delay in North America. As a result, the physical release will contain some extra items.

The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors will be a completely uncut experience. Again, this includes an option to change the color of the hit effects to red, to mimic blood. If this were the Super Nintendo, this would be a breakthrough.

The game includes enemies, not in the Western Super Nintendo Entertainment system version.

The Technical Skills

This side-scrolling arcade brawler has five playable characters, with individual moves. Coupled with, two new characters join the game.

Yaksha, a small female android, with telescopic arms and unpredictable moves offers players variety in their game. Additionally, take control of Raiden, a colossal android, weighing 70,548 pounds, and plow through enemies.

ninjasav4 by ININ Games and Taito Corporation

Take on eight, action-heavy, levels and defeat Banglar and his henchmen. Tengo Project, the original game developers, improves the audio, and visuals, in this game.

Furthermore, the 2-player cooperative play, new 16-bit pixel art graphics, animations, new sound from Taito’s house band Zuntata drive this game forward. And, The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors has an online ranking system to compare your skills to other players worldwide.

Furthermore, pre-orders of the physical game will receive a limited keychain with a throwing knife look.

Also, The Ninja Saviors – Return of the Warriors includes a poster, sticker set, and manual. For more information on pre-orders, please visit http://ninjasaviors.inin.games/.

The five playable android ninjas in this game are:

Conclusion

This game is going to be fun. Besides, Nintendo Switch demands the game carry a heavy challenge. Additionally, an online component could allow players to play cooperatively wherever they are in the world.

This could push this game’s experience over the top. The game sees deadly ninja machines take on all comers. Like Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, Taito, responsible for 1992s Sonic Blast Man, will oversee this game. Sometimes, that is all you need. Below is a massive trailer for the sequel to a classic.

ININ Games, the new publishing label of United Games GmbH, focuses on the classic digital and physical marketing of high-quality retro, indie and arcade titles.

Taito Corporation is a subsidiary of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. With headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, Taito operates core businesses such as game arcade operations, coin-operated game machines, and mobile phone content services.

Top 10 Hottest Football cheerleaders (2019-2020) COLLEGE EDITION

Any co-ed will tell you, that the makeup of the student body is crucial on where to attend university.

With college football just weeks from kickoff, Slickster Magazine counts down the top ten hottest cheerleaders on college teams.  Of course, you can guess USC and several Flordia schools are going to make this list.  Just check out the hottest sorority recruiting videos, and see which colleges always make the list.

College football is full of great traditions.  Marching bands rile the crowds up with anthemic school fight songs.  Drumlines bang out the rhythms of war.  Mascots represent the school spirit, and cheer squads brave all weather conditions to help root their team to victory.  The girls who join these teams are talented athletes, many of them with extensive gymnastics backgrounds.  In addition to keeping their grades up and bodies in excellent physical shape, they often volunteer in their local communities.

Top ten lists are tough to create.  No matter how hard we try, some favorites are going to hit the cutting room floor.  Let us know which of your favorite schools we missed in the comments below.

  1. University of Miami

It’s not the humidity that gets you in Miami. It’s the smokin’ hot cheerleaders. These girls bring the heat at every football game for “The U”, and we’re feeling more than a “hurricane” if you catch our drift.

9. University of South Carolina

Nothin’ like a bunch of cheerleaders holding a sign labeled “ Go Cocks” is there? While the tongue in cheek nature of such signage is appreciated, we appreciate the ahem “show” they put on for us instead.

Image result for usc gamecocks cheer 2019

8. University of Las Vegas Nevada

We’re all trying to get lucky in Las Vegas, aren’t we? Well whenever you’re on the sidelines of the Rebels’ football games, you’ll have plenty of chances to cool off from the heat. Wait, did we say cool off? We meant to heat thanks to the hottest cheerleaders in Nevada.

7. University of Arizona

From one burning hot desert to the other, the University of Arizona Wildcats cheerleading team is driving us wild! Whether they’re information for a pyramid or leading the school song, we’ve got a thing for these cats.

 6. University of Nebraska

Nebraska is boring and filled with flat land and corn. Well, it’s not exclusively corn. And there’s plenty of reason to be excited thanks to the cheerleading squad of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Who knew farming could be so hot?

 5. University of Florida

Chomp, chomp, chomp! These Gator Girls better not leave you feeling angry! They’re probably making you feel… something else. One thing is for sure, they sure know how to make orange and blue look good.

 4. University of Oregon

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck… it must be one of the hottest cheerleading teams in the country! We don’t know what they’re putting in the water up in Oregon, but whatever it is sure is working!

 3. University Of Texas

…Is it too cheesy to make a horny joke? They say that Texas is officially back, and after their win in the Sugar Bowl, it’s hard to disagree. But who are we kidding? You’re all singing “Pour Some Sugar on Me” in your heads aren’t ya?

 2. UCLA

Oh L.A… you are a marvel. In a city of plastic dreams and “Californication”, we can’t help but watch the sidelines. Your football team might be mediocre, but your cheerleaders are some of the hottest in the land.

1. University of Washington

Woof! The University of Washington cheerleaders are the hottest in the land! They might be the furthest thing from “husky” but they represent the university well! Congratulations Washington, you can add this list of accolades to your trophy shelf. You are the hottest cheerleading squad of 2019-2020.

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: A Nintendo Switch Exclusive

BB4F_NSW_Cover by ININ Games and Taito Corporation

Back to the Past

Taito’s Bubble Bobble was a major part of video game history during the 80s and 90s. It was popular on NEC’s Turbografx 16, the Nintendo Entertainment System, and a number of platforms.

Bubble Bobble was the most vocal in a line of standup arcade titles. Bubble Bobble was the first game you would see. The music stands out most. As a matter of fact, the game’s mechanics came next. You immerse yourself in a simple concept. Capture the enemy in a bubble, pop them, and get the loot.

bb4f_screen_02 by ININ Games and Taito Corporation

You play Bub or Bob, men turned into dragons. They use their new transformations to take down various enemies and save their girlfriends from Baron Von Blubba.

Without a doubt, this game challenges your endurance and intelligence.

After 10 years, Bubble Bobble makes its presence felt exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Future Goals

The Most Anticipated Xbox One Games Of the Season Debunked

Gaming is a wonderful thing and what’s even better than gaming is owning an Xbox One. Of course there are other forms of gratifying games, like casino games at Novibet, but in the mean time we take a look at some of the most talked about upcoming Xbox One releases. Check out what our crew found along their escapades.

Borderlands 3

This upcoming game is expected to be released in September 2019 and is a shooting game developed by gaming giant Gearbox Software. The game is set in an apocalyptic theme but with a comical twist. The graphics compliments the sci-fi theme in which the character fight for survival.

The breakdown of the game begins with 4 players of co-op teams which take on the landscape and collect loot as they progress through the various stages. Take note, there is an abundance of loot, over 1 billion weapon combinations to be more precise. Other features to be announced upon the release of the game.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

Ubisoft is at it again and this time everyone knows about it. Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is expected to hit release on the 4th of October. If you are unfamiliar with the Ghost Recon series, ist also a co-op shooter game which focuses on tactical shooting to overrun terrorist headquarters throughout the game.

The game is set on an island which allows for more tactical weaponry use and camouflaging. Practice your survival skills to the max here and prepare to feel the dangers of the game just as Ubisoft has intended.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

There probably isn’t a Star Wars gamer fan not interested in this Respawn Entertainment creation. The game has been developed for single player enthusiast and the story follows the devastation of the Jedi Order which is what occurred in Stars Wars Episode III.

There isn’t much to go on with this one as all is still very hush hush, but we can for sure expect to see some incredible functionality as far as games go.

Code Vein

The following games are slightly more elusive in terms of detail but what we can tell you that Code Vein is a RPG action packed game from gaming developer Bandai Namco. It has been designed in what one can refer to as anime. It has been based on animated vampires and the graphics have been enhanced to add to the eerie feel of the game.

The Surge 2

The incredible graphics on this one is what had us reeling. This is a sci-fi based theme set in a future riddled with alien tech and what someone could assume is alien life force. There are cyborgs, robots and alien technologies that you will need to defeat in your quests to the finish line.

The upcoming year, what’s left of it, is still filled with many games to look forward to and the above mentioned is only some of them to be released in 2019.

Zombie Tidal Wave Director, Anthony C. Ferrante

Anthony C. Ferrante, director of the Sharknado series, returns with Zombie Tidal Wave

Starring Ian Ziering, Zombie Tidal Wave, brings the surfing dead back to the SYFY channel on August 17, 2019.

“I’m really happy it comes across as a pretty gory, zombie film,” Anthony C. Ferrante

Zombie Tidal Wave (ZTW) is the newest film from the creative team behind the Sharknado phenomena.  Directed and co-written by Anthony C. Ferrante,  ZTW is the latest cinematographic fusion between supernatural horror and geological disaster movies.

The unlikely combination of shark-exploitation and killer tornados, Sharknado, was a major hit for the SyFy channel.  The ludicrous notion, while scoffed at by critics, netted five sequels and billions of dollars in profit.  Yes, you read that correct.. BILLIONS and BILLIONS.  (It sounds better when you say that with a Carl Sagan voice…)

While SyFy executives are crossing their fingers and hoping Ferrante can repeat the success of Sharknado, he’s onboard for the love of the art.  Starting as humble do-it-yourselfer, inspired by the great horror directors of days gone by, Ferrante pulled himself into a film career with hardwork and a can-do attitude.   The skills he learned on low-budget horror movies, have helped him carve his own career. Despite the finical success of the Sharknado films, Ferrante seems like he would make movies even if he didn’t have a penny to his name.

Slickster: Is there anything written or said about you that you’d like to clear up, right here right now?

Ferrante: I don’t hate Sharks! I made Sharknado movies, so some people might think I hate sharks.  I’m agnostic towards sharks.  They exist, they are part of the ecosystem.

Slickster:  Let’s nerd out. Since we’re talking about both zombies and sharks, do you remember Lucio Fulci’s scene in Zombi 2, where the zombie attacks the tiger shark underwater?

Ferrante:  YES! You know there were a couple earlier drafts of the Zombie Tidal Wave script where the writers kept trying to make nods and references to Sharknado, and we kept pulling them.  I felt that ZTW needed to stand on its own.  You have Ian (Ziering), you have me, you have me, you have Thunder… there’s enough tie-in with Sharknado.  We didn’t want to stop the movie and go, “Wink wink.  We’re the Sharknado guys.”

But the thing is, when we decided were going to shoot in Thailand, and we had time and budget constraints I said, “You know, we kinda’ have to embrace the Fulci-ness of this movie.  It started to feel very much like a Lucio Fulci Italian zombie movie.  And, since I’m Italian, I thought, “Why not let it just lean into that a little bit?  The one scene that crossed my mind in all of that, was the zombie wrestling the shark scene.   I thought, as a homage to that, maybe we should have shark wrestle a zombie, but that never took any traction.  It was just a blip in my brain.

There is a nod to Fulci in the movie though.  There is a band we called the Fulci’s.  We also threw in a nod to Doctor Butcher MD, so there’s a lot of little in-joke references that are only for nerds!… A lot little subtle things if you look closely for them.  It’s not in your face, but they are there.

Slickster: So not as many Easter Eggs as you might expect, but fans of Shockwaves, Zombie Lake, or any of the underwater Nazi zombie movies might find some?

Ferrante: Yes! If you are very astute in the horror nerdom, there is defiantly a Shockwaves in-joke in ZTW.  But its ‘blink and you miss it’.

The thing is, when you do these things, you want to put them in there, but you don’t want them to take over the film.   You people to have to root them out and have an ‘AHAH!’ moment.

I’ve done that a lot in all my movies.  In Headless Horseman, my second film, we decided to make an in-joke to one of my favorite singers.  So we put a sign on a gas station that said, “ Roland Thompson’s gum sold here.”  It’s a reference to the Warren Zevon song, Rolling the headless thompson gunner, so I thought it would be funny.  Only one other person has ever caught that one, so it was a joke primarily for me and that one person.  Sometimes these in-jokes are super obscure.  Sharknado was packed with these kind of things.

So, yeah, there are a lot of zombie easter eggs in ZTW.

Slickster: We noticed from the Zombie Tidal Wave trailer, that there seems to be a lot of blue blooded zombies?  Does this have some significance in the movie? Was it required for ratings, like it was too gory?

Ferrante: No, actually it was a story point.  There are two zombies in the movie; the water zombies who come from the waves and the islander zombies who are infected by the water zombies.  The water zombies have the blue blood. It’s a plot point and there is a reason for it.

It had nothing to do with the ratings. Actually, the strangest thing about ZTW and the network…. I told Ian early on, “I’m gonna shoot gore. I’m going to go over-the-top with the blood.  When you see the dailies you’re going to see blood everywhere and then we’ll pull it back in the edit.  Its better to have more (blood) than to go back and realize we needed two more blood squirts later.

Zombie Tidal Wave blue blood zombie
There are two types of zombies in Zombie Tidal Wave; blue blooded water zombies and red blooded island zombies.

There’s a lot of blood in the film.  It’s very gory and practical. I wanted as much as possible to avoid using digital blood, but there are few shots where couldn’t avoid it… probably about 5-10% of things we couldn’t achieve without digital blood.  For example, we had a sniper shot on a leg that we had to do digitally.

But, when we delivered the second or third cut to the network, I did what film makers in the 80’s used to do… I put more gore than I wanted in the movie, knowing that they would likely pull back.  And so we submitted it and the network was like, “Yeah. No problem. This is all fine!  I was like, “WHAT!?” [laughs]  We literally blew the backs of zombie heads off and much more, and the network was completely fine with it.   So, ironically, we were the ones who pared back the gore to where we wanted it.

Slickster: That’s wild.

Ferrante: It was fun.  We had a great effects team.  Alandra and Alex totally rock-starred it out.  I’m really happy it comes across as a pretty gory, zombie film.

Slickster:  There’s a lot of controversy between fast-moving “rage zombies,” and the original “Romero slow moving zombies”.  It seems you strike a balance between the two in ZTW.  Care to weigh in on the subject matter.

Ferrante: Yeah, let me talk about that a minute. People have asked about it, and we were fully aware about this, so we tried to have our cake and eat it too. The water zombies are a little more lumbering , slower zombies.  The islanders are a little faster, but there is a mixture of both.  We kinda’ play with that a little bit, because not every zombie is going to be ravenous.

Slickster: We’ve talked about Romero and Fulci, but one name we haven’t mentioned yet is Carpenter.  John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) was listed as major influence on you, and Mr. Carpenter is a name that constantly pops up among today’s brightest creators.  Can you speak to why this is and Mr. Carpenter’s impact on your career?

Ferrante: Halloween was a big important moment for me.  They were doing a reissue of it in the theater when I was kid and I persuaded my mom to let me go see it by myself.   The photos of Michael Meyers freaked me out… I thought the mask was actually his face! (laughs)  So, I got to go see it, and was scared shitless!  Halloween terrified me.  I’ve never been that scared in a movie ever since.

John Carpenter on the set of Halloween
John Carpenter on the set of Halloween

That was when I fell in love with Carpenter’s work.  I looked up his other stuff… Assault on Precinct 13, and The Thing.   When people used to ask me what’s my favorite horror movie, I used to say “Halloween”, but now I say “The Thing”.  Thats because The Thing is a perfect film!  I could watch it anytime.   It’s a different kind of scare and unique creation that was absolutely vilified when came out.

Slickster: It was hated.

Ferrante: Right. No one liked it, and yet it grew.  I enjoyed when I saw it.  But, looking back, they used practical effects and its held up very well.  You don’t see many flaws in that, like you see in the digital effects from movies as recent as ten years ago.

Carpenter, like Hitchcock, understands suspense.  They both created suspense sequences that still hold up well today.  So, I think we owe a lot of allegiance to John Carpenter.

Someone came out of the screening last night and said, “This felt very much like a Carpenter movie.  So, ZTW has my sensibility, but also has an 80s feel. We’re trying to emulate the 80s vibe, but with modern but in present day.

There are a few anachronistic things that we put in there intentionally.  I purposely had the douchebag character, Blaine, wear a pink polo shirt and teal sweater.  He said, “It’s soooo hot,” and I said, “I don’t care! You’re wearing it!

So yeah, Carpenter is a huge influence.  His movies are heavy on machismo. His hero are frequently a grizzled guy, and certainly Hunter Shaw (Ian Ziering) has that in Zombie Tidal Wave.

But, just like in Sharknado, a lot of the female characters have that too, and they rise to the occasion. They get a lot of fun and cool moments too that you don’t expect.  I like playing with those types of conventions.  For example, the classic horror movie cliché, where the woman is running away and falls down.  In ZTW we turned that on its head and did to a male character, which I thought was kinda’ funny in a role-reversal way.

Cassie Scerbo signed on to the first film to play the role of Nova in Sharknado.
Cassie Scerbo signed on to the first film to play the role of Nova in Sharknado.

Slickster: The damsel in distress now changes gender.

Ferrante:  Exactly, I’ve always liked strong female characters. I think they are interesting.  Nova, from Sharknado, started off at the beginning one way and by the end she is this insane badass.  I always had fun writing her dialogue.  She talks a lot like I talk, so it was really fun make this quirky, odd character and see her progression through out the Sharknado movies.  It gives such an incredible arc over the six movies.   We took Tara Reid, who was like a housewife, and turned her into a super hero! (laughs)

That’s the great thing about making movies; once you create a world you can just start messing with it.  We did with ZTW too.   There was character who was supposed to die early on in the film, and the actor was so good (Will J)… and he’s also a singer, who was going to be in the band scene with the Fulci’s.  But then he came in and played some songs that we wrote on his ukulele.  I said, “Oh COME ON Man! Did you have to play that on the uke?! I can’t NOT use that in the movie now!” So we staved off his death and used that as a key moment.

Man playing a ukulele in Zombie Tidal Wave

Slickster: So it was kind of humorous moment.

Ferrante: Yeah, I’ve got an odd sense of humor and I tend to play things straight.  There’s this weird sense of kind quirky humor that we try to get away with.  Its absurd humor that is played straight and SOMEHOW we get away with doing it.

Slickster: Like in the trailer where Shaw asks to his teammate, “What are we going to do about those things,” while they are on a small speed boat being surrounded by swimming zombies.

“What are you going to do about that,” responds his partner pointing a monster tidal wave bearing down on top of them.

Ferrante: That’s a perfect example.  We worked a lot on several drafts to get this quirky humor just right.

An epic zombie tsunami engulfs a boat in Anthony C. Ferrante's Zombie Tidal Wave (2019).
An epic zombie tsunami engulfs a boat in Anthony C. Ferrante’s Zombie Tidal Wave (2019).

Slickster:  So, this is a ‘first encounter’ as they say in zombie culture.  This will be the first time that Shaw and his partner will encounter the SURFING dead.

Ferrante: Yeah, it funny they use that, and there is no surfing zombies in the movie at all! (Laughs) I think thats really funny.  It’s a great tagline.

It’s fun when you live with a project for six months and you walk into the edit room or doing the music and you lose concept of how the film is going to turn out.  You’re like, “Is this even working anymore?  At that moment, it’s kind of this blob, but then you start putting it front of audience and see how they react to it.

There is a moment when the first zombie appears in ZTW, and a shouts, “Get away from me! Get back!”.  Then the character takes a swipe at the zombie, and the sound effects department put a punch hit from the back of the zombie, so the audience never sees it connecting, but every time someone saw that in the screening they think it’s hilarious!  Its those little things that the audience remembers.

If we can do one or two things like that – thing that people haven’t seen before – maybe they’ll remember the movie.

Slickster: What is the best advice you can give to young people who may want to start a career in movie writing, producing or directing?

Ferrante:  Sure.  I came from a small town in Northern California.  I didn’t know how I was going to break into the movie industry, so I kept writing about films.  I finally got some cameras and started doing some stuff on my own.   I found SOME way in, because I really loved making movies.I did short films through high school and went to San Francisco State for film.   I’ve always been a film geek, but I watched A LOT of movies.

One of the things that taught me a lot was editing my own short films.  It completely deconstructs the illusion.  I remember, one of the most interesting projects we did early in my career was a very bad parody of karate movie.  We actually did a couple of them.  The idea behind was this; we’re going take my friend and go shoot  a bunch of unrelated stuff, then stitch it together in editing. Then we’ll loop dialogue over it, like it’s badly dubbed to finish off whatever the story was supposed to be.

At the time I thought, ”These are the most stupid and ridicules things we should be doing.”  But, I found out that doing those silly things taught me about editing.  It taught me about finding a way to make something work, especially when you don’t have something.   It taught me how looping can help develop a story point.

There was small wooden gate at my house, and I had a character kick the gate.  In the backyard there was long gated fence that had been falling down.  So, we lifted the fence up and he kicked the other side and it crashed down.  I cut those two things together, and even though they were completely different shapes, colors and everything, the illusion of him knocking down the gate… WORKED.

It’s weird how you can trick an audience like that, once they are invested in what they are watching.  They don’t question it.  As the filmmaker, you know the trick, but they don’t.  That’s the beauty of film; there are some many tiny, subtle tricks you can employ.  Learning these tricks helped me later on, especially when you’re working in low-budget films.

Look, if you’ve got a 100 days and $200,000,000 to make a movie, you can pretty much do whatever you want, the world is your oyster…. Spend a week shooting one page of script.  When you’re doing low-budget, which is where most of us start – you’re working with eighteen days to do everything.  That’s like twelve pages of screenplay per day.   Sometimes you can be precious.  You’ll have to think fast, and improvise.

I remember a different short we did, and nothing was going right.  The cameras weren’t working and it was windy.  Eventually, someone was getting frustrated and they told me, “This not how movies are made!  After moving to LA and working as an effects artists and second unit stuff, I called that person up and said, “You know what? This is EXACTLY how movies are made!

There’s always something.  The lights aren’t working. The camera isn’t working.  A prop didn’t show up.  You have to think fast, and in some of those cases… real magic happens.

Zombies fall from a tsunami in Zombie Tidal Wave.
Zombies fall from a tsunami in Zombie Tidal Wave.

Slickster:  Is there anything else you’d like to say, or talk about… zombies, horror, important movie director stuff?

Ferrante: Yes, I enjoy doing some of the music for my movies. I have a band named “Quint” with Robbie Wrist.  In all my films we usually end up doing four or five songs per movie.  It’s kinda’ fun, because we do it post (production), and then we sit down and write the songs.  Its kinda like writing a musical.  I always have a lot of fun doing this, and in ZTW we did a lot of 80s inspired songs.   We did one called “Club Dead” and one called “Party to Raise the Dead”.  There’s a punk song called “Suck it!’, so it’s really fun doing that.  There’ll be an EP out by the end of the week on iTunes called Club Dead.

Slickster: Thanks for chatting with Slickster Mag!

Ferrante: No problem, it was great to talk with you. Let me know what you think of the movie.  I love hearing from the fans.

SummerSlam comes to Toronto!

Toronto hosts Summerslam!

Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a city with a lot of history, particularly as it relates to the WWE. It has produced some of the greatest in-ring performers of all-time. Many of the names may be rather familiar. Names such as: Lance Storm, Chris Jericho, Edge, Trish Stratus, and of course Bret “The Hitman” Hart. There have also been some incredible moments as well. If you’ll recall the Skydome in Toronto played host to WrestleMania 18. On that night 67,000 fans saw Triple H walk out as Undisputed Champion when he defeated Chris Jericho.

In addition, they also saw “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan take on the Rock in what would be considered a battle of icons. While everyone remembers those moments a new chapter is about to be written. The Scotiabank arena will play host to this years SummerSlam. A whopping ten matches including six title bouts, will take place along with some returning legends to boot. Could SummerSlam play an integral role in shaping WWE’s landscape for the fall? My gut tells me that’s a very good possibility.

Seth Rollins is out for retribution against Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar Vs Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins has had quite a rough go of it as of late. Ever since Brock Lesnar reclaimed the Universal Title at Extreme Rules the Architect has found himself brutalized. “The Beast Incarnate” made matters worse on RAW when he laid waste to Rollins with a steel chair that Rollins himself brought into the ring. Keep in mind, Rollins is already dealing with injured ribs. Did I forget to mention that? Yeah, Rollins is dealing with injured ribs thanks to Lesnar and a vicious F-5!

However, despite everything he’s been through Rollins has vowed to defeat Lesnar. While I admire Seth’s conviction I’m not sure beating Lesnar will happen. The injured ribs paint a target on Rollins, a target Lesnar will exploit. This one will be a slobber knocker from start to finish. While a victory seems unlikely, retribution for the former champion may be on horizon in some form.

Becky Lynch and Natyala: Best friends but better enemies!

Image result for Becky Lynch and Natalya

In this day and age of professional wrestling submission matches are not very common. However, old-school fans may be in for a real treat on Sunday when Becky Lynch defends the RAW Women’s title against her former BFF, Natalya. Keep your eyes on this one, because it could be one of those bouts that ends up stealing the show. After all, The Queen of Hearts is a product of the Hart family legacy and Lynch is in need of some new blood.

These two ladies are no stranger to one another. At one point they were insuperable and their friendship seemed more than solid. It’s amazing how much has changed. Two best friends turned bitter rivals vying to be champion. If “The Man” makes The Hart Dungeon Diva submit she retains her title, if Nattie by Nature can pull off an upset she becomes champion. It’s that simple. One great thing about making this bout a submission match is that both women may have to reach deep in their bags to pull out some maneuvers we haven’t seen in quite some time.

Owens puts his career on the line

On paper this match is pretty straightforward. It’s classic good versus evil. Kevin Owens has made it quite clear he has issues with his boss, that being Shane McMahon. Owens has called out McMahon in recent weeks. After much back and forth, K.O. and Shane-O-Mac will finally get the chance to even the score. Of course, with all great drama you need to have stakes and the stakes must be high. What could the stakes for these two men be? How about Owens putting his career on the line?

I’m sorry, did I forget to mention that? If Owens loses he will be forced to quit the WWE. What a shame that would be. Both guys will no doubt pull out all the stops and this bout will come to head on Sunday. Who knows? There might even be a stunner with Shane’s name on it.

Trish Stratus to return for one last match

Trish Stratus return Are you ready for this? This one is a big one. It might even be dare I say, bigger than the Lynch/Natalya match. Why would I say that? Well, for starters it will see both the return and farewell of one Trish Stratus. It was Unforgiven 2006, where Stratus would seemingly close out her career. She won the Women’s Title that night for the seventh and final time and it would happen in Toronto. Now, things will come full circle. Stratus will go one-on-one with the Queen, Charlotte Flair in what will truly be her final match.

This is wrestling history at its finest. Two eras colliding on one stage. Two of the very best female performers to ever lace up a pair of wrestling boots. Be sure to grab your tissues and hang on tight for what will be an emotional roller coaster.

Goldberg returns

SummerSlam Goldberg Vs Dolph Ziggler

Redemption. For Bill Goldberg, redemption is what his match with Dolph Ziggler will be all about. I don’t really need to harp too much on the big man’s last showing in a wrestling ring enough of that has been done already. All you need to know is that this one will be a quick, hard hitting contest. Goldberg more than likely defeats Ziggler and that’s what the outcome should ultimately be.

Player One Arcade – Ready for business

Player One Arcade Bar – Ready for business

Retro is always cool, no matter if its clothes, music or movies.  The same logic applies to video games too, and the best part of being an adult is being able to enjoy grown-up stuff (beer and whiskey) while dipping your finger into the pool of past memories.

Located in North Hollywood, CA, Player One Arcade Bar offers 21+ entertainment with a combination of retro arcade video games and full bar service.  Most games cost only twenty five cents and among the establishment’s impressive roster of games, patrons can find the classics.  With over 50 games to choose from there is never a dull moment.

Player One Arcade Bar – which has absolutely nothing to do with the book or Spielberg movie – features a synthwave motif.  Complete with a neon color scheme and a live DJ pumping out synthwave tunes on Friday and Saturday night.

Owners, Chris and Annique are southern California natives, being both raised in San Diego. After a chance re-meeting via a mutual friend one San Diego holiday evening in late 2017, the two quickly reignited their connection. 2019 marked the opening Player One, whence they became not just life partners, but business partners as well. Their extended family includes two cats named Io and Callisto, as well as a snake, named Quetzi boo.

Slickster: First and foremost, what would you like the public to know about your establishment?

Annique: Thank you so much for taking the time to interview us about Player One Arcade Bar! We’re very excited and flattered. Thank you again.

What would you like the general public to know…? That’s such an interesting question because there are so many things; small things and big things. The number one thing, I think, would be that we are not named after the “Ready Player One” film. We are actually named after the concept of player 1, 2, 3, 4. No one wants to be player 2, or even 3 or 4. Everyone wants to be player one. And this rings true from my childhood, the childhood of our other owner, Chris, and really everyone during the 80s. You always fought as a kid with your friends, your siblings, your neighbors to be player one. It’s a love note to wanting to be that cool 80s kid on the Atari.

Slickster: While the concept of a Barcade is very cool, it’s not new. Has there been or is there a specific Video Game Bar that inspired you to open Player One?

Annique: Yes, absolutely. So for years, I’d been going to 82 in DTLA. I loved their simple, minimalist aesthetic; an aesthetic that forces your cognitive attention on why you came: video games. They do great drinks as well, so every once in a while, whenever I had the cash, I’d grab a friend and head down there. I thought the idea was genius. It was a simple equation of vintage games plus alcohol. I could time travel back to being a kid, yet live out the present reality of being an adult with an adult beverage.

Later, Chris, my partner in life and in crime, moved up to LA with me and I took him to 82. There was one particular night after watching Blade Runner 2049, going to 82, and then listening to synthwave on the drive home that we both felt something; the tone of having experienced all those three elements together in a span of a few hours stuck somewhere in the undercurrent. It just resonated. And on the drive home one of us looked at the other and said, “you know what would be cool? Owning our own arcade bar.” And it was there we began the steps to do so.

Slickster: Now for the impossible question. Can you please name your top 5  personal favorite arcade games?

Annique: So this question is not actually that hard for us! I love my particular games, no matter how good or bad I am at them, (lol) they’re still my favs.

So the number one game for me is Galaga! I’m so competitive at it. Whenever a customer mentions that it’s their favorite game, I’m always like, “Oh, I’ll take anyonee down!” They’re always like, “whoa, easy!”. But it’s all in fun, so if I’ve ever challenged you, reader at home, to some Galaga, please excuse my energy! Next would be Tekken 3, then Street Fighter 2: ultimate edition, House of the Dead 2, and finally Contra.

Chris’ favorite arcade games are definitely Tetris, then Street Fighter Alpha 3, PacMan and then, Night Striker!

Slickster: Does Player One have a variety of different types of games? For example, pin ball, air hockey, 4-way Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Annique: We have so many games! We’re so lucky to have partnered with Vintage Arcade Superstore over in Glendale, who’s provided the games for us. Currently we have almost 50 games, which I believe is the most for an arcade bar in Los Angeles! 6 shooting cabinets, 7 racing cabs, 12 traditional cabs, 9 fighting cabs, 5 co-op fighting cabs, one Dance Dance Revolution, 11 pinball and 2 air hockey. Our racing games include a rare 4-player edition of Cruisin’ World, and a Harley Davidson racing game. Can I mention that we also have a super ultra rare Dr. Who pinball? Also, we have PacMan: Battle Royale! A 4 player competitive game where you not only try to eat the pacs and the ghosts, but each other.

Slickster: One of my favorite Barcade games is the pinball game Theatre of Magic. Do you have that specific game there?

Annique: We don’t have Theater of Magic, but I could look into getting it!

Slickster: Do all of your games cost a quarter?

Annique: All of our games are quarter based, and many of them are single quarter play. Some of the pinball ranges from 50c to $1, with Air Hockey at $1.50 a play and PacMan: Battle Royale being $1.

Slickster: We initially discovered your Barcade on a synthwave subreddit. Synthwave is a resurgence and re-imagination of everything 80s.  It also draws heavily on video games and cult classic movies. As a reader can tell from our synthwave interview Archives, this is not a national trend, but an international growing sensation. What is it about this resurgence of 80s culture, and recreation of it with modern technology that is so appealing to the current generation?

Annique: This is a great question and I absolutely agree! It is an international sensation. I actually did a lot of research on this phenomenon when we were initially creating our business plan and what the evidence seems to draw a conclusion about is the analog nature of the games.

Chris and I are Xennials (in the cusp between a Gen X and Millenial) and pretty much our generation was the last to experience an analog childhood coupled with a digital adulthood. And I think with that said, the oversaturation of the digital era has left us all, including the younger Millenials and Gen Z-ers wanting a return to something more innocent, to a simpler time.

The quicker technology moves, the quicker the world seems to move; certainly right now, we’re inundated with fast moving technology in complicated times. Going into an arcade and playing games that are considered “vintage” or even “nostalgic” allows us, through what is now considered simple technology, to essentially experience a piece of a bygone era through getting hands on with these amazing games from the 80s and 90s.

Annique: Player One is beyond proud to play synthwave while folks play games and sip drinks! Synthwave is everything to our bar, and we embrace it to the highest degree! Usually our music schedule is as follows: 80’s new wave/first wave/pop until 9pm. 9pm… SYNTHWAVE TIME!! Ten minutes until closing time: 80’s love songs/ballads. If you hear the 80s ballads playing, you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here (as the cliché saying goes) We even have an awesome dj who plays all of the above, Kevin deNicolo (@sulkin_Raven), on Friday and Saturday nights. He’s new to the dj-ing scene, but absolutely awesome.

Slickster: The retro gaming scene seems to be very healthy and firmly established.  Can you comment on this and what the future may hold for the retro gaming scene?

Annique: That’s another really great question. The retro gaming scene is really just growing stronger and stronger. Again, I think, fueled by the want to return to a simpler time, but also because of the concept of “everything old becomes new again”. It’s a new generation of gamers wanting to explore the history of gaming, and it’s older gamers returning to their youth.

The awesome part for the young’ins is, they get to actually experience thee past by playing the games themselves, not just read about it, or watch a YouTube video of someone else playing. The experience lends itself into one that’s real vs. vicarious. The younger onees want to experience that, and I think that’s something that’s only going to grow for years to come.

Retro gaming is king at Player One Arcade bar. Owner, Chris, looks on as a player goes for the high score.

Slickster: Thanks for chatting with Slickster Magazine, and best of luck on your barcade.  Is there anything we didn’t cover that you’d like to mention to our readers?

Annique: Thank you so much! Something to mention to our readers is that we will be starting up tournaments soon! DDR, Super Street Fighter II: turbo, Mortal Kombat 3: Ultimate and air hockey. If you live in the LA area, please stop by. If you’d still like to be a part of it, we’ll start live streaming the games soon on Twitch and possibly even Caffeine. Thank you so much for the interview!
