Star Renegades’ Gameplay Advances the Rogue Genre

With a neon-bright sci-fi aesthetic, you’re thrown into an intergalactic war that spans literally all the multiverse. Slowly but surely every universe is being conquered by the malevolent Imperium that grows, subjugates, and assimilates the defeated. Now, it’s up to a quantum-powered time-jumping robot and the motley crew that makes up your party to put a stop to this dimension-jumping foe before it takes over every universe there is. Developed by Massive Damage Inc and published by Raw Fury, Star Renegades is a pixel art Rogue-type RPG that was released on September 8, 2020–and it has been quite the experience so far. The pixel-art graphics are nostalgic and the glitch-pop tunes are worth the soundtrack that I got with the game. But the real gem here is the gameplay and how it combines multiple concepts to make a fun, addictive experience that pushes the Rogue genre a bit further.

What’s in the Game?

The game engages its players with an addictive gameplay loop that challenges you to really learn the mechanics of the game in order to progress. With every attempt to fight your way to the endgame, you put another universe at risk of domination by the evil Imperium. When you lose, everything resets as you try to save the next universe. Every universe is unique as the maps are procedural. However, you get to keep certain resources that allow you to buy a starting item and unlock new characters.

Combat is easily the most engaging part of this game. The turn-based mechanics are built on an order-based system, with speed impacting who goes first. The fun comes when you have to orchestrate various attacks that have direct effects on that turn order. This prompts the kind of combat strategy that I enjoyed in Vambrace: Cold Soul and Star Traders: Frontiers. With proper strategy, you can not only steal the initiative from the enemy, you can rob them a chance to even strike back. I found it highly rewarding and a reason why I can’t put the game down.

That’s not all, the game even carries a nemesis mechanic that’s a bit like Shadow of Mordor. Your mini-bosses get promoted each time you die, some of them even come back for revenge. Defeating them usually gains you large amounts of experience and higher-level loot. All of it definitely motivates one to pursue these particular foes while exploring each planet.

Star Renegades, Combat, Attack — The Valkyrie is easily my favorite character choice for my party builds. Hard-hitting and still tough enough to tank a bit, how can you go wrong?

Every Star Renegades Character, a Purpose

Every character that you choose for your party (5 characters max) adds various strengths and weaknesses that you’ll have to balance. You’re given choices ranging from the Valkyrie, suitable for light tanking, but more for critical damage, to more specialized classes like the Empath, excellent for direct health damage, but mainly a support choice for regeneration.

What I could appreciate about Star Renegades was how every character choice made a significant impact on how your party would perform through the rest of the run. Some characters such as the Scoundrel and the Commando are experts in pushing enemies down the turn-order until they Break and lose a whole turn. You’ll find yourself wanting to capitalize on that ability a lot, especially against mini-bosses and bosses. Other characters feature high-damage characteristics, or defensive and supporting abilities.

It’s also worth noting that in-between every three map movements or battles, your characters will camp out. This is your opportunity to develop character relationships through granting bonuses. This is also where you can unlock new character classes through the progeny mechanic.

Beating Star Renegades’ Loop

When you begin the game, your options will be few. But as you die and loop back, you’ll have the resources to unlock more classes. My favorite starting party so far has been the Valkyrie, Empath, and Commando. While it may seem wise to have a dedicated tank like the Aegis, but high damage and keeping your enemies from even having a turn can be so darn effective!

But it takes more than party composition to beat this game. Every enemy has their own combat habits, defenses, and weaknesses. Frontline and backline positioning also makes an impact on targeting for both sides. The stage bosses, known as behemoths, are easily the most entertaining as they have unique strategies and even abilities to throw off your initial strategies–you will likely suffer a total party kill a couple times while figuring out each behemoth’s habits. But that does make beating them so satisfying!

But even when you reach the end and “defeat” the Imperium, it isn’t the end. Yet, anyways. I’m currently on the second loop of the story, and it does change up slightly from the first loop, both in the big bad enemy as well as your main protagonist. I won’t spoil the details, but I’ll say that after that initial high of beating the first loop, you’ll find yourself challenged once again to refine your party composition.

Star Renegades, Boss Explosion, Combat, Raw Fury, Massive Damage — It’s so damn satisfying when you figure out a mini-boss and then take it out!

Final Thoughts on Star Renegades

On depth of gameplay alone, Star Renegades has proven itself worth playing! The pixel art and glitch-tune music only adds to the fun factor. While I’m still playing through the game’s second loop, I find myself wondering what awaits after that. I’m quite hooked on further strengthening my party, acquiring new item unlocks, and discovering more character classes. But if I had to point anything out that I wanted more, it would be the story.

The conversations between the characters as you build their relationships don’t quite contribute to the plot. Occasionally, you learn a little more lore of the world around you, mainly revolving around the long-dead Titans. You may also then run into other side organizations that are looking to kill you. But while I welcome new combat opportunities, I haven’t found myself wanting to learn much more about the world because I’m kind of waiting on the characters. I’m hoping that the endgame will provide that bit of cast characterization that I’m looking for. But given how most of the game dialogue is mostly light-hearted or even whimsical, I’m not holding my breath. It’s worth noting though that this is a small gripe. The gameplay is so engaging that the plot isn’t as paramount to me as it usually is with other games.

If you’re a fan of Vambrace: Cold Soul, or any other strategic turn-based Rogue RPG with lots of fun, layered game mechanics, you’ll enjoy Star Renegades greatly! I can easily give this game a Buy!

Social Gravy Delivers the Special Sauce

Social Gravy is an LA-based alt-rock duo made up of Vee Bordukov and Brad Kohn. They create what they call “Romantic rock n roll” influenced by the likes of Neil Young and The Beatles. The music is heavy on emotion, insightful lyricism, and solid musical performances. Like their influences before them, Social gravy is all about making authentic rock music. Their new EP A Different Kind is a testament to that.

Alt-rock is a huge and diverse umbrella and romantic rock n roll could mean just about anything. However, the name Social Gravy is an attention grabber. I remember going through the video store and grabbing movies with interesting titles or cover art; sometimes they were great, sometimes the cover art was the best part of the movie. Going into this EP gave me the same kind of feeling. For better or worse, I was sold on the band name. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t disappointed. Let’s get into a little more detail.

The EP

Overall, Social Gravy’s latest EP A Different Kind is a soulful musical journey. It contains four tracks and clocks in at right around fifteen minutes. The energy builds over the first two tracks and peaks in the third. The EP closes with the title track which brings the listener back down easy. Since there are only four tracks, I figured I would take time to talk about each of them individually.

Happening Now

This track is like sonic butter. It’s so smooth. The drums and bass are right up front and create a strong yet minimalist groundwork for the rest of the track. The guitar floats in and out of the verses like a breeze. It’s got just enough wah on it to sound almost psychedelic but not so much that it doesn’t fit the mellow vibe of the tune. Everyone really comes together to turn the chorus into a bonafide hook. It’s big, bold, and guaranteed to be stuck in my head for the next few days. Somewhere in there is this gorgeous guitar solo that cuts through the fog of the track like the beam from a lighthouse. I love the guitar work on this EP but it’s especially good on Happening Now.

The lyrics and vocals are equally as good. These are the kind of lyrics that I love: the kind that the listener can take time to interpret them and find meaning of their own. This is one of those that you could throw on a mellow playlist and just have on while you’re relaxing or really sit down and ponder on. The songwriting is rock solid from top to bottom. Vee’s vocals are amazing as well. His voice is sweet honey butter on this song.

Love You Better

There is a reason that Love You Better is the single on this EP. Everything I liked about the opening track dialed up a notch. It sounds bigger, it’s a little heavier, and its dripping with soul. Where the vocals in Happening Now were very sedate and smooth, Vee is singing his heart out on this one. It’s packed with great guitar work. There’s even an outro solo! I really feel like the guitar solo is becoming a lost are and it’s nice to see someone who is making radio-friendly tunes is keeping them alive.

I really dig the lyrics to I Love You Better. It’s another one of those tracks that is left up to interpretation. It could be about a relationship that’s going to hell, it could be a guy professing his love to someone, or it might be about sex. Who knows? Either way, it would fit either one of those like a glove. The line “Your scent is home” really stands out to me. It’s either incredibly sweet or really sexy. Either way, this is one hell of a track.

Anywayz

This is where the energy on this EP peaks. Everything is cranked up to 11 in this all-out rocker. To my ears, it’s an ode to those relationships that are both chaotic and fulfilling. You know what one you were in years ago that was nothing but passion every day, for better or worse? Yeah, like that. It’s a heavy, fun, and sexy tune. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite track from A Different Kind but this one is definitely a front runner. Also, the guitar work on Anywayz is amazing.

The energy of this track matches the kind of relationship that I mentioned above. It’s all passion, fun, and lust. My only complaint here is that, much like those relationships, it was over all too quickly.

A Different Kind

The EP closes out with the exceptionally mellow title track. Where the other tracks were all very much rock tunes, this one has a much more country vibe. I’m a sucker for a steel guitar and A Different Kind has just enough steel guitar to catch my attention and hold me there. The rest of the guitar tone sounds like it’s stuck between country and surf rock. In my opinion, if your guitar tone is gonna hover somewhere, that’s a damned fine place to do it.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s Kohn doing vocals on this track. His English accent shows here and there on the verses and it sounds kind of great. That combined with the soft harmonic backup singers, the steel guitar, and the brushed drums makes this track something I would put in a heavy rotation playlist. I said I would have a hard time picking a favorite from this EP but the more I listen to it, I think this is it.

Final Thoughts

All in all, would I recommend this EP? I think I would. If hearing talented musicians make soulful music is your thing, give this one a spin. I don’t think you’ll regret it. You can listen to all of the tracks right in this review or you can find Social Gravy on Spotify. While you’re there, give some of their older tunes a spin as well. I personally recommend the straight-forward rocker Fools.

The Struggle is Real

Many games will give you a tutorial that takes your hand and walks you through every aspect of gameplay. Outbreak: The New Nightmare takes a different approach. The tutorial is pretty much just a smaller portion of the first stage. You’re thrown headfirst into the end of days. Using the default character, I started with a high-power low-capacity handgun and three open inventory slots. You learn how to pick up and interact with some items and then you’re on your own.

There are some things that really make this game hard. Some of them are intentional and I kind of like them. For instance, the inventory is super limited. There are four slots when you start out. Your weapon takes up one slot. The ammunition that you pick up for that gun takes up a slot as well. In tutorial and first couple stages of Outbreak: The New Nightmare you the most prevalent healing items are painkillers and ointment. The ointment is useless without painkillers. The painkillers are less effective without the ointment. So, if you want to have an effective healing item you have to combine the two. This means that, until you combine them, they take up half of your inventory. You have to be really selective with what you grab.

Some of these zombies are fucking tanks! In the tutorial and first stage, I was averaging about 4 shots to put these things down. That was with using the auto-aim function. The item stack is pretty low relative to how much ammo you use. This, combined with the limited inventory makes things even more difficult.

They’re Working Against You!

The developers of Outbreak: The new Nightmare did things like I mentioned above purposely to make the game more challenging. I really enjoy that aspect of the game; an easy apocalypse would be boring. A little extra mental work along with slaying the undead keeps things interesting. There are, however, a few things that make things a little tougher that may not be intentional.

The camera angle in this game is absolutely maddening. It switches from one anchored camera to the other similar to the old Resident Evil but it’s nowhere near as intuitive. This presents a number of problems. For one, it makes going anywhere a huge pain in the ass. Then, you may miss important items because they’re in the blind spot of the camera. Luckily, there is a map with all of the times marked on it. Otherwise, you’d just be beefed on ammo and heals in several rooms. It takes a lot of getting used to.

There are no damage indicators. The only way to know if you’re taking damage is to open your inventory to check your health post-encounter. Alternately, if you die mid-fight you’ll know where you stand health-wise. The health indicator isn’t all that intuitive, either. You get levels like fine, caution, warning, and danger. I’m still not clear on which one is which except for fine.

Hunker Down and Get Comfortable

If you’re planning on taking a day and smashing through the campaign, you might want to reconsider. The first stage alone can eat up around an hour. This is kind of cool, for a few reasons. By the time you finish the first stage, you have a good feel for the gameplay and the camera becomes less of an obstacle. Also, you’re going to gather enough XP to level your character a little bit which will make the coming horde a bit easier to kill.

I’m going to be honest, I haven’t yet made it past the second stage of the campaign. I’ve put about as much time into this game as I did the entire campaign on Call of Duty WWII. So, if you want to complete this one, get comfortable, you’re going to be here for a while. That’s not a bad thing though. Outbreak: The New Nightmare offeres hours of challenging survival horror gameplay. And it does it at a bargain price.

Alternate Game Modes

There are three modes in Outbreak: The New Nightmare. The modes are campaign, onslaught, and experiments. While campaign and experiments modes are fine, onslaught was my favorite. You spawn on a map and have to find a weapon, ammo, and any other items before the waves start. It’s just you against hordes of the undead. No puzzles, no keys, just extermination. The onslaught stages alone are worth the price of admission.

Final Thoughts

I think this game is all in how you look at it. Let me put it to you in zombie movie terms. If you’re looking for something along the lines of 28 Days Later Outbreak: The New Nightmare isn’t what you’re looking for. This game is more along the lines of one of those deep cut Italian zombie flicks from the early eighties. It doesn’t look great, it has some flaws, but in the end it’s pretty damned entertaining. I would suggest playing this game in the same way you’d watch one of those campy zombie flicks: loaded and with friends. If you do that, you’re going to have a bloody good time. You can now pick this one up in the PlayStation Store for about twelve bucks. Give it a look.

Girl of the Week - Bruna Valentim

Linoy Levi is the featured Slickster Magazine girl of the week. This 20 year is from Israel, and she is a just an everyday, normal fun-loving girl. Of course, she has mandatory civil service like all the guys and gals from her country, but when she’s out of uniform it’s all sun and fun. Levi loves going to the beach and it makes her really happy when she sees dolphins swimming in the ocean.
