Bellator MMA and Showtime Sports announce partnership

Top notch combat sports have always had a home on Showtime.

LOS ANGELES Bellator MMA and SHOWTIME Sports, both leaders in the combat sports arena, have teamed up to bring live, world-class mixed martial arts events back to the premium television service for years to come. Bellator MMA and SHOWTIME Sports, both owned by entertainment giant ViacomCBS, will air live events exclusively on SHOWTIME on Friday nights and will launch with three consecutive weeks of action-packed fights beginning Friday, April 2, live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, and continuing on Friday, April 9 and Friday, April 16. The upcoming live events will emanate from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., where Bellator MMA and SHOWTIME Sports have held more than 20 live combat sports events since July 2020.

The three-week launch is comprised of highly anticipated matchups including the launch of the Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix tournament, featuring eight of the top stars from the deepest 205-pound division in the sport. Following the initial run of three live events, SHOWTIME will televise up to two live Bellator MMA events per month for the remainder of the year. All Bellator MMA events, domestically and internationally, will be available on SHOWTIME in the United States. Preliminary undercard matchups will stream live on Bellator MMA’s YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Sports’ YouTube channel.

Bellator MMA has positioned itself as a leader in the industry with the strongest roster of fighters in its history, which has been built through top free-agent signings and the development of elite young prospects. The union with SHOWTIME Sports will take both established brands to the next level, as the premium network doubles its live combat sports offering for subscribers, while giving Bellator’s premier athletes an opportunity to showcase their top-notch talent to a new audience on a new platform.

On Friday, April 2, Bellator MMA will kick off the new era with the next round of the Featherweight World Grand Prix, as Bellator’s reigning lightweight and featherweight champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (31-4) defends his 145-pound title against Emmanuel Sanchez (20-4) in the semifinals. Both fighters are vying for a chance to move on in the single-elimination tournament to face undefeated A.J. McKee (17-0), who has already punched his ticket to the finals with an impressive first-round submission victory in November. Fans can expect fireworks as these men attempt to take home the Bellator Featherweight World Title and the World Grand Prix $1 million prize.

Then, on the next two Friday nights, April 9 and April 16, Bellator MMA will present the opening rounds of the stacked Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix tournament. Starting on April 9, current Bellator heavyweight champion and former light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader (27-6, 1 NC) takes on former UFC champion Lyoto Machida (26-10) in a rematch of their 2012 bout, while two recent high-profile free agent signings Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (22-6) and Yoel Romero (13-5) clash in a battle of Bellator newcomers. On April 16, Bellator’s 28-year-old current titleholder Vadim Nemkov (13-2) defends his belt in a rematch against another former Bellator champ in Phil Davis (22-5, 1 NC) and top contender Corey Anderson (14-5) takes on Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov (18-5-1) who will make his Bellator debut. These eight superstars will vie for the tournament title and the Bellator World Championship belt throughout the year in the single-elimination tournament.

The month of May sees an additional championship on the line, as newly crowned bantamweight titleholder Juan Archuleta (25-2) takes on No. 1-contender Sergio Pettis (20-5) on May 7. Archuleta took home the vacant 135-pound title in September with a dominant performance, while Pettis cemented his position with an impressive 2020 campaign that saw his Bellator debut end with the first submission-victory of his career.

In the gambling world, Super Bowl Sunday is classified with a much different name. Those who derive their living from monies wagered on the annual championship game of the National Football League promote the day as sports betting Christmas, for it truly is the season of giving odds on just about everything to do with, about and around the game.

An estimated $154.6 million was wagered on Super Bowl 54 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers at Las Vegas sportsbooks alone. The American Gaming Association estimated that in total, Americans bet approximately $6.8 billion on last year’s Super Bowl game.

As the Chiefs prepare to defend their NFL title against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 on Feb. 7th, there are obvious ways to wager on the game. The Chiefs are 3.5-point favorites. You can bet on Kansas City to cover, meaning that the Chiefs must win the game by four or more points. Or you could take the points and play Tampa Bay. If the Buccaneers win the game outright, or lose by three points or less, you’ll be a winner on this play.

The moneyline wager is a straight up play on who will win the game based on a wager of $100. Tampa Bay is the underdog, offered at odds of +150. That means if the Bucs win, you’d pocket a $150 profit on a $100 bet. The Chiefs are the -170 favorite. The negative number indicates that in order to win a $100 profit from a bet on Kansas City, you’d need to wager $170. 

A betting tip – the favorite has won and covered in each of the last two Super Bowl games and in three of the past four contests. However, going back over the last nine Super Bowls, the underdog owns a 5-3-1 slate.

The total is another popular Super Bowl wager. A point total for both teams is established. In the instance of this year’s game, the bar is set at 56.5 points. Your task is to determine whether the point total for the game will go over or under that total, and then bet accordingly.

The last two Super Bowls have gone under. That’s interesting, considering that the two starting quarterbacks for this game – Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady – were the QBs of the last two Super Bowl winners. However, going back further, five of the last eight Super Bowls went over.

The true beauty of the Super Bowl is that you can bet on just about anything to do with the day. These are called Super Bowl prop bets, and they’re as popular as the game itself. About half the money wagered on the Super Bowl will be played on prop bets.

In the case of many of these prop wagers, you need to know jack squat about football, because the bets have no bearing on the outcome of the game.

Let’s take a stroll through some of the more ridiculous – or is that ridiculously popular? – Super Bowl 55 prop bets.

The Coin Toss

It is literally a flip of the coin, and so is wagering on the outcome of the event that officially gets the game underway. Will you bet on heads, or go with tails?

On the surface, this certainly appears to be a 50-50 proposition in terms of the outcome. In actuality, tails owns a 29-25 advantage over the history of the Super Bowl. The coin has come up tails in the past two games and in six of the last seven Super Bowls.

There are props within the prop with this wager. You can wager on which team will win the toss. Bettors can also make a play on whether the team that wins the toss will also win the game. That’s been the case in 24 Super Bowls. But the coin toss winner is 0-6 in the last six games.

Doused With The Drink

Even since the 1986 Super Bowl, when the New York Giants celebrated their victory over the Denver Broncos by dumping a bucket of Gatorade over the head of coach Bill Parcells, teams have marked Super Bowl success by giving their boss a sticky shower of this colored liquid sports drink.

What color will it be, though? That’s the question with this prop bet. The odds say to mellow with yellow. That’s been the winning color in five of the last 11 games, giving it a 45.4 percent probability of coming up the winner.

Absolute Valentine’s newest album offers a distinctly European look at traditional American stereotypes through the lens of horror fiction.

Since 2016 musician Absolute Valentine has help to shape the genre known as synthwave.  Valentine, and his record label, Lazerdisc Records, have been at the vanguard of the musical movement by creating original music, building a scene and promoting growth within the genre. Largely an online, multi-continental, art form, synthwave has steadily gained an underground following in the last decade due work by Valentine and many others.

Synthwave features nearly all electronic and computer based instruments. There is the occasional splattering of electric guitar, vocals, or sampled soundbites.  The soundbites are often taken from nostalgic 70’s and 80’s cult films, newscasts, or whatever may lend to the individual track’s particular story.  Popular themes in synthwave include dystopian future societies, zombie apocalypse survival, or nods to the sexy, neon-drenched landscapes of the 1980’s Miami, FL cocaine narco wars.

Valentine’s newest album, American Nightmares, falls firmly into the genre which he been so intimately involved with for nearly a decade now.

Short of ever mentioning the word horror, the newest album by Absolute Valentine treads ever so carefully around its edges. There are comparisons to “creep shows,” “terror”, and “nightmares.”


Slickster: In your press release for your newest album you state, “more than ever, the American Dream has become an American Nightmare.” Please explain what you mean by that and site current relevant examples to support your explanation.

Absolute Valentine: Before I answer this question, I would like to mention that I am a European and my vision can be biased. It’s just an opinion and not the truth.

First, what’s the “American Dream?” How I define it, I suppose it means anyone who lives in the USA can thrive if they are determined and if they work hard. It’s super nice to live in a prosperous way: getting a new car, the latest laptop, the best clothes, etc… But does it make us happy and fair ? Is this Utopia perfect ? Is everybody able to become rich or live with abundance?

After the ’90s, it seems things have gone wrong and the utopia has become a kind of dystopia. Perhaps people have forgotten a detail. For sure, on the economic side, the USA has been Number One, but what about today? After having the best technology, it seems it can’t help poor people to feel better or to preserve nature. Worst when some resources are depleted, the only way is war. I always am reminded of the movie Back To The Future 2, Biff Tannen’s world is a horrible vision of 2015, it’s the closest example of a selfish world and American nightmares.

Fortunately, nowadays, people begin to understand it can be a nightmare and they try to find other strategies to consume in a better way.
Slickster: How do you define the word horror and what does that mean in specific terms of adding scary, dark or horrific elements into music? Does this mean you distort the bit crushed bass lines more, add dramatic voice over elements, or only compose in a minor key?

I can define horror as extreme fear, a feeling of unease, an unbearable sight. But on the movie side, there are more categories, if I’m not wrong we can find 6: living dead, occult, serial killers, metamorphic, scary dystopia, monster created by human, nature, and coming from space.

This can be translated in several ways on the music side. I have tended to use minor scales for sure but not only those. Chromatic scales can also be used. As you mentioned, distortion and dramatic vox can help.

But to me the most important thing to make a good horror-based album is to set up an ambiance and make it feel like a story or novel. Slickster: The album artwork cover features a young beautiful woman covered in a blood splattered overcoat, smoking a cigarette, and holding two fully automatic rifles. It paints a picture that in a very recent past she was engaged in some kind of battle or killing. Can you describe what is going in the illustration and how it relates to the themes interwoven on American Nightmare.

Absolute Valentine: This young girl is a former prisoner, locked up for trying to make the world more egalitarian. Her ideas go against this new corrupt and ultra-capitalist government, without faith or law. She was therefore selected or rather obliged to participate in a game called the “Terrordrome” in order to regain freedom. This labyrinth is infested with all kinds of creatures, werewolves, vampires, succubi, strange monsters, and one of the cruelest, called “human”. A single watchword is “SURVIVE.”

Slickster: Track 2 on the album, American Nightmares, opens with a low-fi voice over that says,” In the case of nuclear or radiological fall out, people living around potential targets, such as military bases and chemical plants, may be advised to evacuate.” Given that the title of the album and the track are the same (expect #2 is pluralized) it lends weight that this is one of the most important tracks on the album. Are you suggesting that mutually assured self destruction, aka nuclear war, is one of America’s most poignant fears?

Absolute Valentine: Already from the 50s to the 90s, nuclear war was anchored in the American Nightmare. After having used the nuclear weapon against Japan, the United States knew better than the others the destructive effects of this kind of weapon. The Cold War that followed World War II was extremely stressful for the world’s population. Lots of exercises were put in place. You could feel a palpable tension. In addition, we began to discover that nuclear power caused genetic mutations, which had the effect of creating creatures that seemed unknown or malformations.

Today most states are equipped with ultra-destructive weapons, is this the price of unlimited profit or growth? What we can imagine is that one day the world falls into ultra-violence because a man greedy for power and wealth will have the idea of ​​purging the earth of people or governments that do not suit him.

Slickster: You founded Lazerdisc records. How has that journey been and what have you learned along the way?

Absolute Valentine: In 2016, I founded Lazerdiscs with the help of Darren Detoni and Niky Nine. In the beginning, we did this out of passion and to try to contribute to the scene. A few months later, a lot of people encouraged us, and other artists wanted to join the adventure. We have learned it’s essential to be open-minded, you always must question yourself, and you need to diversify. In addition, you must be at the forefront of technology. The world of musical habits has evolved a lot since 2016. Nowadays fans prefer streaming to downloading, so you need adapted tools. The most passionate people prefer merchandise like CDs, Cassettes, or Vinyl.

Slickster: As an artist, producer, label owner and live performer of Synthwave music for nearly seven years, can you give some insight into the current state of synthwave and where you believe it is heading in the next five years.

Absolute Valentine: Currently, I would say that the synthwave is stable. For example, it does not really suffer from the covid19 crisis because there were not that many concerts.. This part of the scene was emerging — some fantastic festivals sprang up. The synthwave scene is built on the web, unlike rock or metal, so it will be able to survive the next 5 years. But I imagine it will have to reinvent itself, for example, with cyberpunk or chill sounds. It will always remain underground, unlike Dubstep or Techno.

Saving is hard. Committing yourself to save a set amount every month and foregoing others is tough, but there are ways to make it easier. For example, several online banking apps have functions whereby they ‘round up’ the change from any transaction you make, and automatically put it into a savings account. If you spend $7.50, you can choose to round it up to $8 or even $10 depending on your preferences.

This way of saving is great as you aren’t even aware you are doing it half the time. But this on its own is not enough. You need to be saving at least 20% of your monthly income to set yourself on the proper path towards owning your own property.

Stop buying things out, that you can do at home

Ok, so this might be a bit tougher to stick to, but it’s a small and effective change. Quit buying coffee in cafes, use a reusable plastic bottle, and give up pre-packaged sandwiches and similar. If you can make it at home and bring it with you, you don’t need to be paying inflated prices when you are out and about.

Make coffee in a flask or drink it at the office, prepare a packed lunch, and fill your bottle from the tap. These little changes to your routine can save you hundreds of dollars each month.

Check out your options

How much deposit do you need for a house in your neighborhood? What are your preferred terms? What kind of interest rate are you hoping for? Do you know what a mortgage is? Maybe soy boys know something after all?

Vegan smoothies for breakfast? What am I, a Portlandia hipster with an insatiable craving for soy milk?, you ask yourself. Before you completely write off animal proteins for the “most important meal of the day“, check this out. With a few simple, readily available ingredients you can make a bomb-ass vegan smoothie without destroying your wallet.

Red Dead Nutrition

Beets, apple juice, flax seeds and water are the only four items you need to make this first vegan smoothie. Start with the beets, and open the can slowly… the sweet red juice is tasty, but it also stains clothes and countertops with equal vengeance. Next, add your apple juice and water to taste. Want less sugar? Adjust your portions of water and juice. Cherry juice is also an acceptable substitute and still keeps your smoothie a nice red color.

The last power food you need for your breakfast smoothie are flax seeds. These are easy to find at most grocery stores. Buy in bulk to save cash. One to two tablespoons of flax seeds in the blender with the other ingredients will be sufficient. Blend it all up in your favorite blender bottle and you’re ready to go.

Pro tip: If you have thin walls and nosy neighbors, then you might want to do the blending the night before to cut down on noise complaints.

Just as before, this vegan smoothie only uses four ingredients, but has a taste of the islands.  The ingredients are, fresh mango, banana, pineapple juice, and flax seeds.   Combine the ingredients in a blender and mix to taste.  Just like the red vegan smoothie, water can be used to dilute some of the juice if a less-sugary taste is what you are going for.

What is great about the tropical flavored vegan smoothie is the customizable settings.  For example, ripe mangoes are not in stock (or they are a pain in the ass to peel).  You can swap the mango for fresh pineapple and substitute mango juice instead.  If you don’t care a hoot about the color of your smoothie, you could toss a kiwi fruit in.  Don’t overthink this, it’s just a smoothie and you don’t need to be a rocket surgeon to get it right.

PRO TIP: Many canned fruits are loaded with extra high fructose corn syrup for packaging reasons.  If you must used canned fruits for your smoothie, try to look for “no sugar added” or similar markings.  Sorry dude, you’re gonna have to read the labels on this one.

If the Hulk Hogan vegan smoothie isn’t good enough for you, why not try go-to smoothie for Mr. Universe himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Take a look at the video below for the actual directions to make this one-of-a-kind drink from The Terminator himself.  It uses cherry juice, bananas, protein powder, and one very special super-secret ingredient.

Of course, Arnie, uses protein powder to help make his smoothie a lean, muscle building machine.  To keep with the vegan theme, make sure that you utilize a vegan protein powder in your drink.

Also, the alcohol, in this case, Schnapps, is entirely up to you.  Legends aren’t born every day, nor do they frequently follow the “rules” that other’s put on them.  If Arnold adds a shot or two of high quality grain alcohol to his drink, why not?  Don’t over do it, and for pete’s sake, don’t drink and drive after a hard workout if you’re drinking booze from the blender.
