CM Punk Vs Mickey Gall Went As Expected

Mickey Gall (3-0, 2-0 UFC) just walked through the biggest fight of his short career by steamrolling over CM Punk at UFC 203. Expectations of CM Punk shouldn’t have been very high as he’s fighting in the biggest promotion with absolutely no experience. Mickey Gall had two previous pro fights and two amateur fights which is leaps and bounds over someone with no experience.

When Mickey Gall called out CM Punk, he knew exactly what he was doing as if the fight was fixed. He knew that he was far better than Punk at Punk’s greatest asset, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. A legit brown belt, he easily transitioned to whatever position he wanted and effortlessly took his back.

The fight went as many expected by Gall winning by rear naked choke in the first round. He received a total of $30k which is 1% of the total purse money divvied out amongst fighters. Doesn’t sound like much but there was six other fighters who received less than the 1% he received.

His Opponent netted $500k not including if he has percentage of the pay per view buys written in his contract. He most likely did considering he’s a big attraction bringing over his fan base from the WWE. CM Punk pulled in around 17 percent of the total fight purse for just over two minutes of Octagon time in survival mode.

Even though Mickey Gall didn’t receive the money CM Punk made, he’s still fighting for the UFC while CM Punk most likely is not. In only his 3rd fight, he was on the main card and took part in the fight that drew somewhere between 650k to 800k in pay per view buys.

What’s Next For Gall

Gall certainly went about this roller coaster of a ride over the past year to build his name and raise his stock. He got into the UFC by calling out CM Punk but he’s now en route to his 3rd UFC fight. Gall used the biggest stage possible to flatten CM Punk’s hopes of a successful debut while also booking his next fight.

During his post fight interview with Joe Rogan, he smartly used that platform by calling out Sage Northcutt. Gall did what more fighters need to do and be vocal. Reason being that 9 times out of 10 that fighter gets what he or she is asking for. Here’s what Mickey Gall had to say,“I want ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt. I think that boy’s corny. I want to punch the spikes out of his hair. They say we’re Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight young guns. Let us bang it out.”

“After Gall called him out, Sage’s team hit me up and they want the fight, so we’ll make it happen” according to Dana White.  This will prove to be a solid fight between the two rising prospects at the moment. The difference is Gall had to earn his name by completely taking away someone else’s stardom. Sage Northcutt was highly preached about before entering the Octagon and has lived up to the hype so far.

Northcutt is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu who’s actively working on improving. There has been some talk that Sage’s father isn’t going to allow the fight to happen due to an injury. We’ll have to monitor the negotiations on that fight as it would be a good fight for both fighters.
