Interview with Chief League

Louie Grand: So where do you guys come from? Ness: well, me myself Ness, i’m coming from Queens. born and raised. But based out of North Carolina for the past six years.Just out here grinding, you know. Coast: Myself, from North Carolina. Been out here all my life. Born and raised. Love it. Love my fucking city. Now – Chief League Ent. – I know I’ve asked you before, but how’d that name come about? Ness: well, we met, all three of us – “our manager” – working together. When I first moved over here, five years back, one of our common interests was definitely, you know … chiefing a lot of blunts. So just making music with the crew? Coast: Yeah, it started before that, before the music. Chopping it up about CDs, real music. Like, we loved it to death Ness: And it evolved, at least in the music as a collective between me and coast, but just putting out dope shit. I see you got your Season 2 on your SoundCloud at the moment. Just curious, are they mixtapes, or…? Ness: Well the way we’re functioning right now is that “in” a season we might drop a mixtape, or maybe might be a lot of freestyles. It might be videos. It’s just basically a different phase. A wave? Ness: We just try to switch it up in a season, like new flavors, vibes we’re feeding off of and giving back out. Season 2, you can say, is inspired by summerin’ a sense. We’re actually about to wrap it up and drop this project from me and coast. We whipped it up in a couple days. It’s going to be called “Exotic Nights,” and people are going to love it.  Any features other than yourselves? IM68EXTL Ness: We might have one on it, but really the way this came about , was hanging out with a couple of people, catching vibes and you know, got a lot done that day overall, very “trippy.” Crazy night all over the place, a lot of weed. Speaking of that, what’s the craziest night you ever had getting a record done? Ness: Uhm… Honestly, I want to take it real back two years ago when we recorded “Post Season.” It was a wild night. Then we end up back at the studio. Everybody was just fucking turnt. We were just freestyling, and Coast had this freestyle that was just amazing, and will never be heard by nobody. After that, we were inspired; got in the studio, just on a whole other level. How many drugs were you on that night? Ness: [laugh] Just one, mainly, just one Coast:Mary Ness: and you know alcohol, but no drinking and driving, unless you’re good at it. [laugh] But drinking was involved that night, a lot of it. If that’s what you guys got to do to make good music, I guess so guys… [laugh] So wrapping up Season 2, what’s next? What should we be expecting if you guys know? Coast: We have “Visions” coming out, which is my track. “Used To” another hard-hitting track. Ness: We’re definitely going out with a bang for Season 2. Well obviously you’d want to do videos, but can we expect anything anytime soon? Ness: Yeah definitely Season 3 we’ll try to focus on that a lot, and we still have a lot of ideas for tracks that may be out too. Yeah, and I mean “now” people don’t just like to listen to stuff, they like the visuals. Ness: Yeah, we been setting up photoshoots lately, as a face to go with he music. Also we’re scheduled to go to New York. Got photographer friends out there just to help us get out there circulating. Oh dope, and I got to say, Coast, that “Small Talk” record was some dope shit. I really liked it, man. Coast: Appreciate it, just one of those days inspired just me and mary.  And any specific reason why Coast has more work out than Ness? Ness: Well Coast is definitely at the forefront of the movement. I don’t mind, and some of those records the titles were just off too. Maybe some miscommunication with management because they’re the ones who post it, and set up art work, shit like that. But definitely something me and Coats were aware of, just to make sure not to cause any confusion.  So you trying to do an Asap Rocky and Ferg type thing, where one pushes down the door for the other. Ness: Maybe in a sense, yeah. It might be how they’re like both equal, but right now, just whatever works nicely.  I feel you, and any shout outs before we wrap up? Coast: Shout out to everyone supporting the movement, you for even giving us the opportunity, and really everyone loving what we do, and they bring the love around us. And one last shout out to North Carolina Ness: And Queens, stand up. We in this bitch.
