The Primus concert experience

When attending concerts you want to be able to have a unique experience, whether it be participating in the show or by the way a certain band finds a way to captivate you in their shows. You want to feel alive and get the best experience for what you pay for. Out of all the bands I’ve seen, none do this better than Primus.

Primus is one of those bands that don’t really take performing all that seriously. They bust jokes out of the blue during the show or start yelling out how much they suck during their set (their chant is literally “Primus Sucks”). I’m not even joking at this point.

They are a fun band to see in concert, and a hilarious one at that. They joke on stage, they bring out props, and they wear masks. They are one of the most creative bands out there. No show is exactly the same. Watching them live is an experience that I would like to talk about.

Free Press Summer Fest

So far I have seen Primus quite a few times. The first show that I attended was their 2014 set during Free Press Summer Fest. They were the last show of the night on the last day of the festival. It was just my dad and me. At that time I had only listened to Primus and did not know how their shows played out.

At first only their guitarist, Larry, came out and started playing a riff on his guitar. As he did this, Les and their drummer, Tim “Herb,” walked out and got to their stations. Les started slapping his bass, and before I knew it they had started their song “Those Damn Blue Collard Tweakers.”

Right at that moment everyone in the audience started jumping to the beat repeatedly as if it were second nature. The people in the crowd formed mosh pits equal to the size of two Olympic swimming pools. The mosh pits went ape crazy during the song “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver.”

Primus Pig MaskI saw a guy in a pig suit get into a fist fight with two drunk dudes wearing togas. The pig man ended up throwing one of the guys half way across the pit. I lost sight of them after that.

While all of this was happening everyone was shouting the chant, “Primus Suck!!!!” (They had that chant since they first started. Trust me, they’re OK with it.)

But the weird didn’t stop there. During the middle part of their set, Les left the stage for a couple of minutes. When he came back he was wearing a pig mask, walking a staggered pace to his electric bass.

Then he started playing the song “Mr. Krinkle.” Everyone was sing along to the song. Les was playing so hard that his bow ended up getting shredded during the song.

Chocolate Factory Tour at The Revention Music Center

The Free Press show was an amazing show but it wasn’t their Chocolate Factory tour. It’s when they did covers of the songs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at The Revention Center where you truly got to see the incredible stage performance.

At this show they were the opening and main band. For their first set they played all their hits. (Every show they always start off the concert with “Those Damn Blue Collar Tweakers.” It’s kind of a standard at this point.) They even got a little orchestra to play the songs with them. It was pretty awesome to see one of the orchestra dude play the drum… He looked like he was constipated while he was playing it.

I’d have to say that the real highlight of the show was the second act. Once the second set started, everyone in the crowd stop moving (there weren’t really any song to mosh to during that set). They started with the song “The Candy Man Can.” The screens had remixed clips of the movie that really added a nice level of weird to the song.

Primus Oompah Loompahs at the Chocolate Factory TourThe songs that really stood out in the show was the Oompah Loompah songs. During the songs they had people in the costumes with giant heads prancing around the stage. The heads were about the size of two people put together.

They actually showed video of the Oompah Loompa’s prancing all around Houston, even going into Minute Maid Park. One of them wore a Houston Astro Jersey. It was really great that they were able to show some love for H-Town!

At the end, they left with a bang. They played another 10 songs and left.

I’m going to say it out right that Primus isn’t a band for most people. They are that type of band that grows on you. If you give them a chance, I think you will enjoy them as much as I do.

Primus is a very unique band in a way that they don’t really take their job seriously and that’s a great ideology to have. There are too many bands nowadays that take music too seriously, almost as if they’d forgotten emotion it takes to making music and do performances. That’s what makes this band stand out as one of the funniest, most creative band out there.

In closing, as always, I will put the concert dates at the bottom of the page. Please leave your opinion at the bottom of the page. I’d love the feedback Thanks!
