5. UFC 81 vs Frank Mir

Mir defeated Lesnar via Submission at 1:30 of round 1.

The UFC gave Lesnar no easy pickings for his first appearance against former champion Frank Mir who at the time had 15 more fights than Lesnar on his resume. Brock was up against it with many observers sceptical about Lesnar’s transition from sport’s entertainment to prizefighting at the highest level

The contest only lasted 90 seconds, however, Lesnar showed in that brief period the ability to be able to compete with the top heavyweights in the world of mixed martial arts.

All things considered, the night could have been much more devastating for Lesnar than it turned out to be but it served as a reminder if nothing else that although Brock’s wrestling could be used as an effective weapon there was still some subtle specific’s that needed immediate attention.

4. UFC 200 vs Mark Hunt

Lesnar defeated Hunt by unanimous decision (later turned into a no contest).

Brock spent over 4 years away from MMA between 2011 & 2016 before returning to participate at UFC 200. Lesnar was matched up against Mark Hunt who stylistically looked like a nightmare for Brock at that point in time.

Lesnar was battling ring rust on top of a dangerous knockout artist in Mark Hunt, on the night Brock looked as good as ever. Almost as if he’d never been away.

The result was overturned 5 days later on account of Lesnar failing a drug test, the performance irrespective of the positive test for an estrogen blocker was nothing short of outstanding.

3. UFC 91 vs Randy Couture

Lesnar defeated Couture via TKO at 3:07 of round 2, became UFC Heavyweight Champion.

After suffering a loss in his debut Lesnar returned to earn a win over Heath Herring which set up a fight with the champion Randy Couture.

At the time this fight was made Couture was already a legend of mixed martial arts which meant the draw for this card was huge, in fact, it was the first UFC card headlined by heavyweights to get over 1 million PPV buys.

Beating Couture is what put Lesnar on the map as a legitimate fighter, yes he looked competent in his debut against Mir, Heath Herring was no pushover but conquering Couture and claiming the belt was the accomplishment that turned Brock from a case of intrigue to success. Lesnar achieved that status within 9 months of losing to Frank Mir.

Coming from the WWE Brock was already a household name around the world, there was enthusiasm from the day it was made official Lesnar would be chancing his luck at fighting. The enthusiasm turned to fixation when Brock became the “Baddest Man on The Planet“.

Now the UFC had a marketable star who not only had the image but the skills to make momentous heavyweight title fights.

2. UFC 100 vs Frank Mir 2

Lesnar defeated Mir via TKO at 1:48 of round 2, unified the heavyweight belt & earned his first title defence.

The eagerly anticipated grudge match between Brock Lesnar & Frank Mir took place at the landmark UFC 100 which was the first event in the company’s history to break 1.5 million PPV buys.

Brock Lesnar had become twice the draw he was when he initially burst on the MMA scene and Frank Mir played his part in building this rematch by using any opportunity to take a dig at his rival. Needless to say, Brock was eager to avenge his earlier loss, UFC 100 provided the spotlight Brock craved to show the world including Frank Mir the first fight was a “fluke”.

The fight followed a similar pattern to the first with Brock managing to get Mir to the ground the difference this time was Mir couldn’t work a submission. Lesnar pummeled Mir until he was barely conscious and in doing so further cemented his status as the number one heavyweight on the planet.

After the fight, the usually reserved Lesnar delivered one of the most memorable post-fight interviews you’re ever likely to see.

1. UFC 116 vs Shane Carwin

Lesnar defeated Carwin via submission at 2:19 of round 2, unified the heavyweight belt & defended his title for the second time.

This felt like a genuine super fight, the anticipation for this match-up was extremely high. The challenger Shane Carwin was on a tear having knocked out his 5 previous opponents in the first round, including Frank Mir.

Brock Lesnar was considerably larger than most of the men in the heavyweight division but Carwin was one of the few who also weighed in on the heavyweight limit of 265lbs. In a weight division that spans from 205lbs to 265lbs the difference in size between a small and big heavyweight could potentially be unfair. One of the reasons this fight had an intense magnetism attached to it was the fact that Carwin was as much of a physical anomaly as Brock Lesnar.

Heavyweight fights have a unique aura about them, something about two abnormally large men trying to take each other out creates an excitement that’s hard to match. These heavyweight fights can sometimes be disappointing but this fight definitely lived up to the hype.

Carwin had Lesnar reeling from punches, Lesnar hit the canvas and somehow survived Carwin throwing the kitchen sink at him for a large portion of round 1. At the start of the second round, Carwin looked as if he’d expended too much energy, Lesnar although fatigued himself had recovered just enough to capitalize by taking Carwin down & working his way towards an arm triangle.

Brock had used his size and strength to bully his opponents thus far, this fight was an exhibition of Brock’s toughness, intelligence, & conditioning.
