To be fair to Lawrence, Hollywood has had problems with body paint in the past with the actors portraying the tinman from the Wizard of Oz and the golden girl from Goldfinger almost suffering fatal sicknesses from the body paint used in those films, so there is a precedent for her to be concerned. Since then, there have many improvements made to body paint and prosthetics and some actors have even made a career out of being put in makeup and body paint.

Actor Doug Jones has played many iconic characters and spent hundreds of hours in the makeup chair.

There should have been some compromise to make it more comfortable for Lawrence, but any method still would have taken time in a makeup chair. So it would seem that this is more of an issue of personal comfort and less of an issue of urgent danger.

This change of the character goes against the ideas put forth by over 50s years of a franchise. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, but this really feels like a case of her being “too big.” As a person, it’s fine that she is trying to look out for her own personal health, and no doubt she works hard at what she does, but not “inhaling fumes” is undermining the character she is portraying. An actor’s preferences shouldn’t affect the way a character is portrayed, especially when the character has such a distinct appearance, for a good reason. It would be sad to see a star I really admire turn into a Hollywood douche.
